Perspective...
Two girls snuggled down together on the plaid blanket, their chosen spot on the hill overlooking the town they called home, allowing them a bird’s eye view of the resulting sunset as another day ended. A few wispy, summer time clouds were alight with pinks and reds, were sprinkled across the deepening canvas as Venus sparkled in the twilight.
“You know,” Said the redhead to the pretty blonde next to her. “The sun is actually below the horizon at this point. It’s just all that light still has to go through the Earth’s atmosphere and ends up refracted to buggery.”
“Pft, that’s what those scientist types want you to believe.” Blonde said with a grin as she shifted around to point at the moon rising behind them. “You see her?”
“Her?” Red asked, raising an eyebrow in question.
“Ahuh,” Blonde said as she began to explain. “Pale as fuck? Only come out at night? Totally a cute goth girl.”
Red giggled, refusing to hide her enjoyment at her lover’s flight of fantasy. Blonde’s ability to find the fantastic in the mundane always left Red happier for having listened. “Go on, my love, explain away,” she urged.
“Well obviously the Sun and the Moon are totally a thing.”
“Are you suggesting the sun is gay?”
Blonde nodded, keeping her expression serious. “Yep, why else would light produce rainbows? Totally. Utterly. Gay.”
“Ah, so…?”
“Well, obviously their jobs keep them apart: The sun fills our world with light and warmth-”
“And the moon?” Red interrupted, taking a moment to take in the way her lover’s straw-spun locks tumbled back over her ear, occasionally threatening to escape but always being pushed back into place with a casual run of Blonde’s finger tips. She would never admit it, but it was always those small subconscious acts which made Red’s heart squeeze a little - those little details she’d picked up on over the years they’d spent together.
“Oh, she is totally there for moths, vampires and the werewolves.” Blonde stated like it was a bonafide fact.
“Oh, yes, the most feared trio of the night!”
“Pft, you just wait till you're faced by a vampiric were-moth! One bite and you’ll forever be beholden to the household lights” Blonde responded with a grin, before darting into playfully nibble at Red’s neck.
“Aaaargh! No! Anything but the household’s lights!” Red giggled, half-heartedly pushing against Blonde. “How will I ever survive?”
“I’ll make sure to feed you sweet, sweet nectar on a regular basis.”
“Wait, do you mean actual nectar or…?”
Blonde wiggled her eyes suggestively. “The one thing you can’t possibly resist.”
“I am not that bad!” Red protested.
Blonde nodded in agreement. “True. You’re rather talented with that tongue of yours, I’ve got to admit...”
“Thank you!”
“...after I trained you up.”
“Fuck you!” Red said, poking a finger into Blonde’s side whilst trying to contain her laughter.
“Later,” Blonde said with a smirk. “And if you play your cards right, I might even break out the restraints.
“Promises, promises. Anyway, where were we with story time? Ah, yes! You were telling me about the moon.”
Blonde smiled softly, returning her attention to the golden-silver hue of the moon as it took its rightful place in the sky. “The moon brings softness into the world - a pale Mistress that covers everything in silver, for she wishes us nothing but beauty-”
“And the occasional changing of the tides?” Interjected Red, giggling.
Blonde nodded, giving Red a wink. “Very important for the crabs, that.”
“So the Sun holds on for as long as possible, yearning to see the Moon, yet knowing they must be apart,” She continued. “She clings on so fiercely, just for a glimpse of her beloved. Even if it’s only for a few minutes.”
Blonde turned over to face Red, smiling softly “She says ‘‘I see you, my love. And though we may be parted, I will send my light to remind me you are everything I hold dear.’”
Red felt her heart constrict with sadness, the bittersweet nature of the story settling onto her soul. “Fuck, that’s equal parts beautiful and sad, B.”
Blonde smiled back, stroking Red’s cheek as she offered her a loving smile. “It’s all about perspective, sweetie. Sure, they are parted for now, but long after we’re both dust the Sun will reach out and embrace her love, drawing the atoms that make up the moon back in with her along with half the solar system. Then, they will remain entwined for the rest of eternity, never to part again.”
“Wait,” Red paused, looking at her love with suspicion. “Did you just romanticise the death of our solar system?”
“I told you,” Blonde said with a knowing smile. “It’s all about perspective…”
