James Potter, renowned potioneer, has a secret side career as an erotica writer under the pen name of Scarlett Goldwing. When his latest book starts to take off, and Scarlett is asked to promote it at a public event, he has no other option but to recruit his colleague Lily Evans to pretend to be Scarlett. The only problem is, Lily Evans hates his guts… or does she?

**Chapter 1: Lovelorn**

Every Friday at quarter past five, after getting off work, James Potter took the Floo to the Leaky Cauldron.

He would take a moment to gulp down a glass of Firewhiskey – his reward for surviving another week with his colleague, he’d say – and head down to the Owl Office.

He would pick up his mail from Anonymous Box 341 and exit the building to Apparate back to his home at Godric’s Hollow.

There, he would turn on the wireless, make something to eat and then sit at his office to peruse his mail. It was usually an activity that brought a smile to his face; but not today.

Today, he sorted through the multitude of letters – they were getting too plentiful; perhaps he’d have to pick up his mail more often, he mused – until he found the one sent from Lovelorne Books Ltd, 45 Horizont Alley, London and opened it.

It was… well, it was good news. Fantastic news, actually. But with a caveat.

Don't share anyone's pseudonym.

I have to change one of my professional pen names because a friend I thought I could trust, one of only two people not in publishing who knows, blabbed to her writing group that the nom de plume is me.

This pseudonym is one I've only used for short stories. But I was going to use it for an new novel. But now I have to change it. Thank god we hadn't gotten any further in the process, because if it were already being printed I'd be stuck with the present pseud.

If someone entrusts you with their pen name it's because they trust you to keep it to yourself.

It doesn't matter if you think it's not a big deal to tell others. There are many reasons writers use a pseudonym. Some are commercial, some are very personal. In fanfics it may be the author is under 18 and doesn't want family to know she writes sex scenes.

When a writer has published under a pseud, that name becomes their brand. They don't want to have to change it.

If someone asks you to not tell anyone else, do this:

If you're a writer who uses a pseudonym, the safest bet is to tell no one. I know it sucks to not be able to show someone a story/fic and say "I wrote this!" But if you felt you needed a pseud in the first place, the safest secret is one never told.

I have three other pen names, each for a different genre, one for fanfics. Only my dearest best friend of 22 years, who's my first editor, knows their mine.

Now I have to come up with a new pseudonym. And that ain't easy! Especially when it will/might end up on the cover of my book.

BTW, if you're choosing a pseud, pick one whose surname begins with M. That'll give you a good spot on library and bookshelves.

There’s something romantic about writing under a pseudonym. I’ll daydream about what my name might be, were I to ever traditionally publish. Perhaps also one of the appeals of fanfic 🪶

THAT I AM A POET & WRITER

Yes, it's true. I, who go by "giannic" (Gianni C), am the very same "Yahyia" on YouTube. Also, years ago I was cafégroundzer0 on Allpoetry.com & a few other social media sites (1997 - 2016).

I am John Creighton. I was born in 1961 to a Mexican immigrant & an Anglo-American news editor & publisher in a small Midwestern college town.

Even before 1996, I chose cafégroundzer0, because my dream was to have a chill spot to operate a café, & since we were college students (at Knox College). Growing up during The Cold War, I would have preferred that rather than suffer in a post-apocalyptic radioactive environment, that it take place in a major urban area targeted directly in the event of a strike by one of America's nuclear enemies. I never dreamed that what happened in NYC, the Pentagon, & the skies over Pennsylvania, would actually occur.

I have never realised that youthful fantasy. The closest I came to it was opening up a portable stand at a rally (1984) against investing in South Africa, because of their policy of apartheid. (to be continued)...
