Ch209, Spoilers part two

Then we are back to what just recently happened -- Doll and Finny fighting over who's the enemy and who's the friend.

He's got all these opposing ideas in his head about who killed whom and why... and was it deserved... and why was he offered these chances? Those sorts of thoughts, though I know there's stuff missing in the quick translations by @bitterbutlr , but that's the gist of it.

Even Sebastian pointing out our earl's bad table manners at Lau's place is a fond memory for Snake, at least sort of. It is a time of determination, to not just step aside to his young master's older twin, who has usurped what our earl has gained.

Then the memories turn into cinematic records, as all these flashbacks were just Snake's life flashing before his eyes.

We don't even learn about the mysterious place he thinks he's from. I'm wondering if that information came from some of the snakes and doesn't actually apply to him.

He apparently was human (at least partly), born to a human named Sarah Campbell (or a similar name). She was an actress. This also comes from @bitterbutlr and maybe one other person on Discord.) The NEW! reaper notes nothing worth adding, and then there's the tamping sound of the "COMPLETED" stamp.

What I don't get is why this reaper looks at Doll holding Snake's body and doesn't think there's anything else to note. Ronald once said he couldn't tell who was the bizarre doll -- Ada or Layla -- without checking their records or catching them in the act of behaving like the first bizarre dolls they saw (on the ship). He needed to see Layla attack Baldo before he knew for sure it was her.

So... is this reaper going to leave the scene without confronting Doll? Doll doesn't look normal at this point... but perhaps this reaper just plans to stick to the basics...? William says it's all just a formality anyway, right? 🤔 🤨

If so, that really leaves it open for her to ask Undertaker to make a bizarre doll out of Snake.

He has a lot of memories about what he wanted in life -- mostly to find a family to belong to, where he can live in harmony with them. However, he also has memories where he's specifically and severely angry with "Smile" and "Black" and wants revenge on them. Undertaker could cherry pick the right memories to serve as episodes that make Snake loyal to real Ciel, or at least to Doll. If that happens, we might see Sebastian destroy Snake anyway, just like he warns about in ch51... for any Phantomhive servant who turns against their young master....

Why Snake delayed reporting to Joker

This was originally within a reblog, but since it's gotten so long I've decided it's more appropriate for it to simply be its own post. I find that it's tidier this way.

The subject of Snake not speaking up about the first tier tents being searched or his snakes having been tied up in knots, is something I see people bringing up somewhat often when talking about his life in the circus.

I'd like to give my humble opinion, which is simply that Snake didn't report right away because he knew Doll knew our Ciel was behind those wooden boxes. Doll is a first tier member, considered his superior, because Doll's part of the main cast. In fact, Doll scolded Snake but said nothing of Smile. If Doll didn't say anything about it right there and then, why would he? He couldn't just throw Doll under the bus in front of everyone, Dagger was there too.

Before I keep going, let me just show the layout of the circus and mark the path the first string took as they came back from the performance, when Wordsworth and Doll found our Ciel.

He heard what had happened from Wordsworth(presumably), and instead of going with Dagger and the others to the food tent as he was before, he walked back in the direction they had come from, to his tent without uttering a word. Doll did tell him to go put them away, so it makes sense that he'd go back to his tent. But I believe in his tent he thought of what to do with what had just happened. Likely deciding together with the snakes.

By this point, the snakes weren't tied in knots because Sebastian had already released all of them, thus our Ciel being found by one.

In the time between this and him reporting to Joker, the Earl had a little talk with Doll and then went to Sebastian to have a little banter and talk about his findings. Meanwhile Doll had changed back into the "Freckles clothes" always worn while not performing, to hide the Doll identity from the other members and keep being Freckles. While talking to Sebastian, our Ciel had an asthma attack and Doll (now Freckles) showed up and went with them to the doctor's tent. Now by this point, while they were all at the doctors tent, Snake was reporting to Joker.

From what Joker says, he told them Smile and Black snuck in, but apparently had no idea what their goal was. We're shown this scene after the reporting had already been done, so we can't know what else exactly was reported to Joker. When Joker questions why he didn't tell him right away, Snake doesn't answer and looks away. Joker shrugs it off and tells him to leave.

About the snakes in knots, it's possible that Black and Smile having been there was much more relevant information than them having been tied and locked. And so they might not even have passed this information to Snake. This information may also have been omitted by Snake when reporting, or simply disregarded by Joker, because to him the important bit is the yard being potentially involved.

After Snake leaves, Joker immediately starts blaming Doll for what happened, with Peter joining in. Which makes me wonder if he did end up telling them about Doll.

So, either Snake didn't say anything about Doll, and his refusal to answer Joker's question was due to not wanting to reveal what truly transpired. Or he did, in the end, decide to tell them of Doll covering up for Smile. If he did say everything, his reluctance to answer Joker's question could be more to do with his loyalty being questioned. Because after all, he still didn't know what to do. It was either obey Doll and keep quiet or tell Joker and do my job, which is to guard the first tier side and report should anything dodgy happen. It would understandably take a while to decide on the correct course of action. Do I go against this boss? Or that other boss? Ultimately, Joker is the ring leader.

Perhaps there's is a chance that Snake confronted Doll in that window of time before Smile's asthma attack. But if this had happened, one would think Doll would've told him not to say anything to Joker… Then there's another possibility, which is that Snake sent a snake after our Ciel. I would like you to consider this panel:

In the middle of our Ciel talking, Sebastian looks to his left side and frowns with a "?" mark. I don't think he's reacting to our Ciel's saying he trusts he can find the records, because he's finding something strange, he's got a question mark. At first glance I thought he was finding the Earl's cough strange. But the thing is that he's been listening to him coughing like that for a good while now. They've been in Will's tent, and he's been coughing practically all night. You could also say that he's feeling that our Ciel's going to have an asthma attack. But then when the Earl starts coughing more strongly, Sebastian looks like he's wondering what's wrong as he looks to the right to his master.

Consider the possibility that, in that panel, Sebastian detected an eavesdropper. Perhaps a snake. And that it has nothing to do with our Ciel, until he turns to him with the concerned look. If Snake went after (or rather, sent a snake after) our Ciel and heard their conversation, despite not understanding the context, he'd get the idea that there was something about the first tier that was being withheld from him and of course when Joker asked him why he didn't report right away, he wouldn't want to let Joker know that he'd been sneaking after Smile and found out the troupe was hiding things from him. I still lean more to think it was because of our Ciel's coughing, but I'm just giving this a chance because sometimes Yana shows us things that aren't what they seem to be in the end. Even if this was the case and Snake overheard this conversation, I don't think he'd understand much of it. "The missing children. The circus. Tom, the piper's son." is about as much as he could get from their conversation that would somewhat make some sense but still, nothing in concrete. Missing children doesn't mean kidnaped ones. I think he really doesn't know what their goal was. Also because what Sebastian and our Ciel talked about in the snake's presence, in Snake's tent, was nothing telling in any way.

Regardless, we might consider that Snake could've heard the conversation between Joker, Peter and Jumbo after being told to leave. Not even necessarily then, but at some other point in time. A conversation between the first tier members that would betray that there was something off going on.

As he said in chapter 50, he knew they were hiding something from him. This situation with Smile was odd, and if he wasn't aware of anything before this, I think this would do it. He was obviously aware that they were leaving the circus grounds, because on the day of the Phantomhive manor attack, he said to them "Going out again?". The way he said this gives me the feeling he was already aware of something, just as when he was suspecting Finny of hiding something from him in the orphanage. Snake hesitates in asking things directly.

What I would like to know is exactly the extent of what he knows in terms of their suspicious activities. I wonder if he already thought something was a little off before Sebastian and our Ciel showed up but it only became more obvious with their presence in the circus. He was suspicious, but I don't think he'd be expecting something so bad, as he clearly had no idea children were being kidnapped and showed shock at the revelation. Apologies for the long post, I hope I've added something to the discussion!

We know the snakes have an enhanced sense of smell. The circus troupe was murdered on the mansion's grounds. Do you think Snake already knows that at least a big part of that crew would be dead, from the smell of their blood/corpses/bodies? He doesn't really look angry with Finnian or shocked, he much more looks defeated, as if Finnian just confirmed what he already suspected.

Also, do you think the improved bizarre dolls smell like death in some way too? In that case, wouldn't the snakes smell that Doll was no longer alive?

What are your headcanons of the Kelvin Siblings celebrating Halloween together?

So they used to celebrate it in their own way three times in three different ways;

One was during while in the East End. Since the rich people better off than them threw parties they weren't able to do much until they found and fell for Doll, so they worked hard to gather money to buy some goodies and Peter surprised everyone when he rolled over a large pumpkin he heavily bargained for from the cart seller but it was worth it when seeing Doll's happy face

Another was during the orphanage where finally went to those parties thrown back then, each one all dressed up and having a blast. They heavily ignored the gossiping whispers about their "behaviors" (aka them chowing down on the snack bar) and certain whispers about their looks (ie Jumbo's height and the ones missing limbs), they only attended and tolerated it all cause Baron Kelvin wanted to show off

And final was during the circus stages, similar to back in the East End they weren't able to do the super rich life's versions but would do it their own way, like dress up and maybe do a Halloween Night Show with some mild trick-or-treating and Doll always gets pumpkins the week of Halloween which always made them smile

Things only got more nostalgic with Snake added later on in which the older ones remanence with the feeling of doing this for Doll

As for now-

After reuniting with Snake Doll would join the Phantomhive Family activates on Halloween. And if this is an AU where everyone's alive/never died then yeah they all joined too

Because Ciel has a soft spot of Doll (he refuses to say that of course) he decided to mix up the traditions of their and his family's to make them all feel more welcome, he would do this for every Holiday tradition too

While in the past they would simply ignore rude comments, the servants would protect their new friends and Doll would have freedom to be all cockney accent angry

Snake looked at himself in the mirror. He was standing in a dress tent on the circus venue, trying on his very first performing costume, only… “Should it really be this… Revealing? Says Emily.” Snake looks at Joker, who was standing next to the tailor in a corner of the tent. He smiled. “Of course, how else are you planning on prancing those scales? You’re the snakeman of the circus after all.” Snake looked at himself in the mirror again. He was donning a loincloth made of some light, green material. Not much else. His chest shivered a little in the breeze wafting in the tent every now and then, caused by the wind. “I…” Snake bit his lip. Joker shook his head and looked at the tailor, who was eagerly awaiting their approval. “Could you leave us be for a moment?” Joker asked. The tailor left. Joker walked over to Snake, and carefully flung an arm around his shoulder, trying not to touch the snakes. “You know what I first saw when we met you in that cage?” Snake lowered his head and touched the scales on his right cheek. “On the contrary, dear friend,” Joker laughed as he lifted Snake’s chin with his free hand. “What I saw first were your eyes.” Snake blinked in surprise and looked into his own pupils. “Their golden colour is so bright and sparkling, they’re like little treasures m’lad. Of course, at the time we met, they weren’t shinin’ quite like they do now. Being well fed and healthy will do that to a person.” Joker likely shook Snake’s shoulders, who became flustered. “They now seem so eager to see the world, to make the most of their earned freedom. So don’t let their view be tainted by whatever they saw in that cage. The difference now is that people will be amazed by your talent, showcased by you on stage, instead of being disgusted by a filthy cage with a terrified boy in it. So why not make the most of it?” Snake felt tears welling in the back of his eyes, caused by Joker’s kind words. He rubbed them away, and then nodded. “Great! Then I’ll talk to the tailor to let him know we have a deal.” Joker let go of Snake’s shoulders. He then pointed to the make-up on the table on the left side of the tent. “If you’re feeling up to it, you can highlight your scales even further. They might be hard for the public to see when they’re sitting so far away.” Joker gave Snake a light pat on the back before walking out of the tent. Snake took a look at himself again in the mirror. His golden eyes were staring back at him. He never thought about it before, partially because he hadn’t been able to look into mirrors that much, but if Joker said that he was looking much better, then he’d trust his word for it. His white, toned body made a stark contrast with the dark green cloth. Curious, he walked over to the table, and found some green body paint. Unsure where to begin, he took a scoop of the stuff and rubbed it on his chest. The scales became green, just like those of the most typical snakes. He looked over at his friends, who seemed to nod. He took another, bigger scoop out of the jar and proceeded to smear himself. Once finished, he looked into the mirror again. Not only did the paint fit with the cloth, he thought to himself, it also matched with the colour of his eyes. Proud of his job, Snake left the tent. Tonight, he would debut as the snakeman, and he would put up a spectacular show. For Joker and his new found family.

We see the circus arc through Snake's POV, starting around the time our earl and Sebastian are snooping around the tents.

Snake seems suspicious of the new circus troupe members, while Joker and Dagger seem to have accepted them.

He makes his report, based on observations and what his snakes tell him, though I have a feeling the snakes told him more information than he's passing on to Joker.

And here, below, I wonder if he's overhearing a discussion that the other first tier members didn't want him to hear?

Then the first tier members leave and don't return. Snake asks around the remaining troupe about their disappearance. The circus probably won't last much longer without the main attractions.

Whatever he learns, he decides to leave and find out earl and Sebastian. I don't know how he finds out where their manor is located. Then it's confronting them in the greenhouse.

A replay of our earl extending his hand and offering Snake a job there.

Snake accepting the offer.

Snake learning to read and write and do chores. Then the rude people on the ship...

...followed by our earl boosting his confidence.

As well as whatever Sebastian says there.

Part two in a moment or two.

Black was much too handsome, too bold, too refined, too perfect at everything he did; he was a major threat to the torch she carried for Joker. In the end, she couldn't resist him and he gave her far more than Joker ever did. He gave her the most fascinating, sweet night. (That's the title of the song they sang together in the Noah's Ark Circus musical; "Fascinating, Sweet Night.")
