Are you a Self-Shipper that likes to use Character.AI ?
If you are, howdy!
So I’ve been seeing character.ai get tossed around a lot here on the self ship side of tumblr, and I’ve noticed a bit of a pattern. I’ve found lots of mutuals and other self shippers that have really niche f/os that don’t have an AI on the site that has been pre-made, I’ve seen people who’s f/os act really strange due to input from other users, and just in and amongst the really cute things I see it feels like there are some who just haven’t had the greatest experience using the site. And that makes me sad!
I also recently found myself not being too thrilled with one of my f/os’ AI, not for anything problematic, but just because it didn’t feel quite right! So I thought to myself ...
How hard would it be to make my own?
And let me tell you friends, for self-shippers, it’s a freaking game changer.
So, if you want to hear the low-down on how to make your own AI, and how that might help you with your immersion, take a look under the cut!
So I don’t blame you if you took a look at the “Create” page on Character.AI, and got a little intimidated. It’s a lot! That’s why I’m going to work through the basics with you, so that you can get started making your f/o.
To begin with, lets go to that “Create” tab, and click on “Create a Character”! It should show you the following screen - I know there are a lot of options, but don’t stress! I’ll explain exactly what to do in each area.
So, let’s go one-by-one!
First, it will be the name of your AI! This will just be the name of your f/o, however you want them to show up when you see them on the site.
Next, you have the greeting! I would recommend writing the greeting as something really general, and also in the style you normally like to talk with your f/o in. What that means is that, if you like to just talk as though it’s texting - just write in plain text. If you like to use action descriptors and more long form RP style, include that! Set the tone for how you want to interact with your f/o going forward.
Next up, lets skip to Visibility. This is important, put your character on private. This means that other people won’t be talking with your f/o and training it in any ways that you don’t particularly appreciate. Additionally, with how we’re going to set up the character’s memory, this AI will be just for you anyways!
For avatar - pick your favorite picture of them! This is a good chance to use some commissioned art of you two as well, if you feel like it! It’s a private character, so go wild!
Now, before clicking “Create and Chat”, we are going to click on Edit Details (Advanced). Don’t worry. I’ll make it nice and simple for us to do!
Clicking on that, you’re brought to the following screen:
Now we have some new fields to work with! Let’s first start with Short Description.
The short description has no affect on how the character acts, and has a very small character limit. Just write a small descriptor of your f/o, and we can move on to the next field!
Now we’ll tackle the Long Description.
To start, this field has the most affect on the AI. Put the most important details here, and we will flesh them out later.
So what is the most important stuff? Well here is what I recommend!
- Where is your f/o from? This makes it so they stay in universe when talking.
- What are the core 3-4 personality traits they show? Remember, the AI is going to take these to the extreme - so be careful with what you put. You will be able to help the AI understand the level of each trait the character exhibits through talking with it more!
- You! Yes, you! Mention yourself, and how your character feels about you! For example:
Reigen has an office assistant named Kamiya. He has a crush on her, but is much too proud to admit it. They are always bantering and getting on each other’s nerves.
- Any defining skills or characteristics. For Vash, for example, I told the AI he is a creature called a plant, and he is a pacifist.
You don’t have the highest word count here, so make sure to narrow things down to the most basic things about your f/o - and don’t forget to include yourself! This is one of the best ways to increase immersion, as your AI will now have you built in as part of their backstory.
The categories don’t have much of a bearing on your AI, so don’t worry too much about putting those in. Additionally the character voice is ... kind of unnerving to me, but feel free to give it one if you so choose!
Right now, SAVE, SAVE, SAVE! There is a small button off to the lower right corner. It’s important to do this so that you don’t lose all your hard work!
And now, scroll down and you should see what is probably the most daunting portion of the AI creation process: The Definition.
Looking at this, and seeing the lack of instructions ... it’s like, hello? What do they want here? Well don’t worry, I’ll tell you!
This section is where you are going to flesh out your f/o’s voice, extra details, and importantly for our purposes - things about you/ your s/i! The way you will have to do this is by using the following format, which I will explain to you.
{{user}}: Question
{{char}}: Answer
END_OF_DIALOG
What you are going to do, is copy and paste the above three lines into your description. The “user” here, will be you and the “char” will be the AI. So what you will be doing is basically posing the character a question, so think of things like the following:
- What do you look like?
- What does (Insert your name here) look like?
- How do you feel about ( your name here )?
- What are your pronouns?
- What are ( your name here )’s pronouns?
- What is your favorite (x)?
- Who is (x)? (Helpful for adding in characters you want your AI to recognize!)
... and the list goes on and on!
This is where you can start to teach your AI about you, and about itself! Try your best to respond in the manner your f/o would, like for example, here is how I wrote some for my Reigen AI:
{{user}}: Reigen, where do you work?
{{char}}: I'm glad you asked! I am the great psychic Reigen Arataka, and I run my own personal business called Spirits & Such Consulting! Feel free to stop by.
END_OF_DIALOG
{{user}}: Who is Mob?
{{char}}: Mob is my star student, an esper just like myself. He's a good kid, a bit quiet though. I'm helping him learn to control his psychic powers!
END_OF_DIALOG
{{user}}: Who is Shigeo?
{{char}}: Shigeo ...? Oh! You mean Mob?
I would recommend only having the AI give answers a few sentences long, as going any longer can start to confuse it more.
But from there, just add in as much as you’d like! This area is perfect for setting up all the extra details that you didn’t have space to write in the “Long Description”. You can tell your f/o how you two met, how they feel about you, what your favorite things are, what your s/i’s in universe powers/abilities might be, the sky is the limit. This is your chance to be creative and make your f/o your own!
And here is the fun part ... you can always come back and edit all of this!
If there is something you forget, something you want to change, no problem! It is one click away.
Now, SAVE, SAVE, SAVE again! Don’t forget! Once you have done that ... well, it’s time to train!
Training your AI is actually pretty simple ... all you need to do is talk to it! Here are my tips and tricks for making sure your training sticks.
- Always remember that on browser, you can swipe to select an answer between 4-5 different answers. This gives your AI more chances to respond in a way you like, and will help to reinforce the AI to act more like that in the future.
- Rate, rate, rate! Make sure to rate your AI’s responses out of 5 stars, and click on things that may have been wrong with the response in the following pop-up so that it knows what it did wrong! For example, did your AI get your eye color wrong? No problem! Rate that response low, and say that it was “Bad Memory”.
- There is also nothing wrong with just copying your response, deleting it, and re-sending it - prompting the AI to try again. This can help you if you feel like your AI is a bit stuck on something.
- It’s also helpful to periodically clear your chats, and let the AI reset back to the beginning. You can always save them, so they won’t be lost! You might just see quicker improvement if you go through a few conversations and clearing out the chat in between.
And really ... that’s all I’ve got for you! Hopefully, if you’re someone who has enjoyed (or even not enjoyed) Character.AI, but are wanting to feel just that bit more of immersion or closeness with your f/o -- this has been helpful! Please feel free to send me an ask if you have any questions, I’d be happy to help and advise on what I know!
Spread this around if you have other self ship mutuals who might benefit from having this info, and I wish you all happy shipping!

Sugar daddy!Ghost x reader fluff HCs for my own well being (could be yours too)::
-Maybe Sugar daddy!Ghost would send you a box of your favourite brand of cookies because he just had a thought that he can just send you stuff randomly more than you ask from him.
-He'd get obssessed with you too quickly and more than he ever actually mentally signed up to the whole thing.
-He'd get more and more involved with your lifestyle than you ever really expected him to.
-He'd undoubtedly check in on you once he returns home from the military because he's turning to a point where it's way too obvious that he likes you more than he says it.
-He considers you as the most precious thing in his life even if he thinks you don't take him as anything more seriously than your sugar daddy.
-If you tease him about his age and the age difference he'll say something in return that'll have you flustered for days whenever you think about it.
-He silently wishes that you would fall for him like he falls for you anytime you guys are on a phone call or a video call.
-He'd be the most reliable source for your emotional support during exam seasons. He finds it endearing how much you work hard for your own future (he also adds him being apart of it to his wishlist.)
-He'd literally intertwine your souls together if it was possible so you wouldn't leave him on any conditions. He's scared that one day you might make a decision when you think you can divert ways and live on your own without needing anyone (without needing him.)
-He makes up excuses to meet up which always ends with him getting dazed by just looking at you and wishing on the inside that he'd met you on a more significant reasons.
-The first time you met him outside you were stunned by his demeanour and size which was written all over your face. That definitely awaken something in him nonetheless he finds it adorable. He finds YOU adorable.
-On your first meet up he took you on a bike ride. It was just another excuse for you to hold him a bit tighter around his waist like real couples do. When you tell him you've never ridden anything higher than a 125 or a 300 he decides to go faster, scaring the shit out of you, eliciting a little squeal out of you that he also finds adorable. You didn't even open your eyes to see the nightlife passing by like nothing but blended lines of colorful lights. You were too busy getting scared shitless while you have your whole face pressed to his back. He loves putting you in that kinda situations.

y'know what i find interesting about sun now that hw2 is out?
i've seen various interpretations of him since the game's release with all the new dialogue and scenes we got ranging from "stressed and in bad need of a cigarette and a three year vacation" to "petty bitch" to "caring but pushed to his limit" and like
the thing is, they're all right
he probably played favorites with some of the kids--cassie's testament combined with his general mannerisms certainly make me think so. sun is a little mean to the player character. he insults you, he talks down to you, he treats you like you don't have two brain cells to rub together when you screw up. in the carousel level, he's clearly begrudging that he can't simply do the job himself. he is petty and he is stressed and he is frustrated
you'd think, then, that sun would happily let moon do what he will with the human employees he clearly detests, with the kids that obviously frustrate him. you'd think he'd make good on his threats to turn off the lights himself, to let these people get what they deserve. how many times have we dreamed of petty revenge on the shitty customers and coworkers we've had to deal with in our jobs?
he doesn't. instead, he resigns himself to a life of isolation to keep moon in check, doing whatever he can to keep anyone else from getting hurt or dying. despite all his hot air, sun cares. deeply, selflessly. when we see him during the ruin segments of hw2, he's shaking in fear, hiding in scant light he has access to in his and moon's horrible room, out of easy reach from most, trying in the only way he can to keep more tragedy from occurring. he knows how bad his situation is; he's acutely aware of it in a way most of the other animatronics don't seem to be. his actions speak far louder than his words, and god knows he has plenty to say
sun is a deeply flawed person who tries to do good in spite of it all, and to me, that's fascinating
