I think multiple things can (and are) true and important to recognize:

1. Cis people are trans people will more often than not have a ton in common. Trans women and cis women, for example, can have a ton of experiences in common as women

2. Trans people oftentimes do have very different experiences from cis people, and it can be irresponsible to say that trans people have to have the exact experiences as cis people of the same gender identity. The experiences of transness can overlap with experiences of cisness, but by no means does that require them to overlap in every instance. Trans people don't need to be the same as cis people in order to be authentically their gender.

3. Trans people aren't solely responsible for "saving" their gender, or for making people better men/women/people.

4. For the love of all that is holy, cisness is not the default. It is simply one human experience of gender and/or sex, and transness isn't an anomaly - it is just as much a human experience as being cis.

These are complex conversations, and I know it can be hard to navigate sometimes. I'm not here to condemn people for not being the most Nuanced about trans topics, in fact I want to invite more people to the table. We all have something to contribute to making the world a better place for trans and cis (and those beyond or inbetween) people

Are the galleria demons part of hell and stationed elsewhere in vessels for their jobs? 

Or are they their own separate ‘pantheon’ or type of demon that are just naturally embodied on that plane, and the inbetween its own place, so Aeron has to absolutely break reality with the doors to visit Dorian? (Heh, the two traumatized red guys are distant and finding it hard to connect. Literally.)

And do the girlies occupy different areas of the same inbetween or are they in different worlds loosely linked? Apparently a galleria is a collection of small shops under a common roof, an arcade. I think of the kitchen as the shared convergence of their overlapping realities. The hub. 

(Also Genesis leaving doors/barging into Eri’s home? In a really ham fisted inappropriate way he’s metaphorically trying to make connections and experience/share Eri’s reality! He’s trying to leave the door open between them! He’s knocking down the walls! Or he’s just being a troll and a perv, I don’t know his life. Perhaps a past closeness Eri has forgotten eroded their boundaries and Genesis is still acting accordingly. Or maybe at this point Genesis is just settling for negative attention.)

Are they like hell’s demons or are they functionally more like demi-gods the way they have familial relationships and meddle with mortals? They make me think of the three muses. (I know that developed into the nine muses but I’m mining Wikipedia and pushing this idea as far as it goes.)

Perhaps through their gifts and jobs they are muses, both inspiring and documenting humanity.

Genesis is Aeode, the muse of voice and song. Perhaps he was the patron of oral history, passing events down through song. I can see him inspiring satire and dissidents.

Erebus is Mneme, the muse of memory. His preservation of books and artifacts plus committing existence to the written word fits well. In turn history and tradition are spoken into life. He sparks and immortalises.

Aeron is trickier. The last muse left is Melete, which can be translated to contemplation or pondering. Meditation. I guess art does involve looking thoughtfully at something for a long time, reflecting, interpreting and depicting reality through the filter of your own perspective.

Visual arts are a language pre-dating the written word in both history and human development, maybe even the first language. A child can see before they can speak. It’s subjective but universal. Keeping ancient experiences that could have been lost to time and making them accessible to anyone who looks.

Melete has also been translated as ‘practice’, which fits with the dedication and physicality of art. Melete has also been described as springing from water - a metaphor for creativity, for blood, for life.

Hell, capitalized in reference to dorian's nine circles, is part of the "in-between". the in-between is anything that isn't space but isn't human, situation between worlds, planes.

a lot of communities in the in-between are connected, but sometimes due to their roles, they are unable to cross. dorian frequents adonis's bar, but he is not able to stay long before returning. he is pulled out of an otherworldly obligation. but dorian cannot venture outside of "Hell" for very long, whether it be bars, aeron's gallery, or the mortal world.

in the case of the galleria, they're not affiliated with anything in particular. they created their own affiliations, and by they, i mean erebus with the archives. they do whatever the fuck they want. some are under obligations. adonis has their obligation to the town they inhabit, and though they can leave it and do as they please, they always return.

they share the same "area" of the in-between and have common areas. the three are nicknamed "the unholy trinity" by some because they are the literal (albeit accidental on my part) definition of "hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil". genesis just wants everyone to be close. he's not great about going about things. not his fault entirely. just a little ditzy. and in case anything goes wrong, he can get between places.

they have one role: as long as the world needs their agility, they will remain. it is why they must continuously rebirth.

genesis is passionate about oral history. it's necessary. it's what music is for. it's what songs are for.

erebus has too good of a memory. it's what makes his grudges so, so bad.

with aeron that is why delusion itself can take a childish form.

I fell asleep. Anyway, here’s an infodump about my two boys (Lawrence + Rei) and their experiences with being neurodivergent. I’ll talk about my other neurodivergent characters a different day :P

Lawrence

He’s autistic. He was diagnosed in his late 20s. He was evaluated once in the late 90s as a preteen but all his behaviours either flew under the radar or were dismissed as quirks.

Sadly got bullied a lot in his school years due to being different but his parents were very supportive (his mother being autistic herself but not being diagnosed either). Thus, he has a lot of trust issues and some trauma he still needs to process.

He’s very blunt and can’t lie to save his life. This has gotten him in trouble many times and most people keep their distance away from him since they deem him rude and intimidating (“but he’s a sweetheart he really is please trust me” - Rei, probably)

He’s absolutely oblivious to nonverbal cues and social cues. Doesn’t understand societal norms and thinks they’re ridiculous. Also, he takes things too literally.

Used to mask as a child to try to fit in but stopped once he got older. He doesn’t give a shit anymore what people think and that’s very cool of him

His special interests are history, music, and cats. He only infodumps when people ask him to but BOY is he passionate when he does. That’s probably the only time you’ll get to see him being expressive otherwise his tone is flat and he looks either bored or angry.

He has sensory issues, has misophonia and can’t handle staying in crowded places. He absolutely despises when people talk too loudly or when voices overlap one another. He gets headaches because of this. He also can’t stand certain tactile textures and food textures. Shoutout to overly crispy food, he hates them with a burning passion.

He regularly stims and isn’t ashamed of it. He mostly stims due to boredom and stress, but occasionally does it when he feels extremely positive emotions. Twirling his hair, drumming his fingers, and spinning anything in his hands are his most common stims. You often see him doing them while he works. I think I mentioned this before but he’s skilled at spinning his conductor’s baton because of this

He’s touch averse but also touch starved which is a great combination that I personally suffer from myself. He gets uncomfortable when strangers touch him but he’s fine with family members and close friends touching him. He is particularly very touchy with Rei and basically makes the raven his weighted blanket or teddy bear at night

When he gets overstimulated, he often leaves the room and isolates himself to try to calm down. If he’s burntout, he takes a few days off work just to indulge in his interests and relax.

Rei

He has ADHD, was diagnosed in his early to mid 20s but is unmedicated because the medications he tried didn’t help him and negatively affected his health. His father, Yuuma, also has ADHD and was diagnosed late in his life. Yuuma is very supportive and helps Rei as much as he can.

He struggled a lot in school, mostly due to deadlines and his workload. He would’ve been top of his class hadn’t it been for the fact he often doesn’t do his homework or projects (and he was a literal delinquent when he was 14 so…)

He had a lot of peculiar hyperfixations and did a lot of hobbies before sticking to art and music. Due to this, he’s got a lot of skills most people don’t know about. Did I ever mention this man was good at fencing?

He suffers a lot with executive dysfunction and burnout. There are days, sometimes even months where he can’t work or do anything and the only thing he can do to cope is to gradually get back into things or just do nothing at all.

He has sensory issues. He has misophonia and gets really bad migraines when it gets triggered. He often has his noise cancelling headphones because of this.

He’s always in a state of overstimulation or understimulation. No inbetween. He’s gotten so used to it that he just rolls with it. Oh yeah, and he forgets to take care of himself. He’s just like me fr fr

He has insomnia because he overthinks a lot. He used to have meds but grew tolerance to it and the other meds he tried only made him oversleep. His current medication is Lawrence. I’m not joking. His brain turns off once he cuddles with his husband at night.

His main hyperfixations are art, music, and the occult. This man can talk about his fixations unprompted and won’t shut up about them at all. He gets really embarrassed about it afterwards and apologizes

He stims a lot to stay focused or grounded. Often pacing around the room (only when he’s alone), bouncing his leg, or spinning/clicking his pens (which pisses Lawrence off to no end which makes Rei do it even more LMAO)

He can’t and never has a schedule. He has a general idea of things he wants to do on a day to day basis, but never sticks to it completely and prefers to have a flexible schedule.

And there you have it. Both my faves are neurodivergent, who would’ve guessed. I don’t talk about them being nd a lot cause it isn’t a big focus in the story but it IS integral to them since you can see their traits and how it affects them. Especially with Lawrence. That poor man can’t take a break.

Hello, friends, foes, and inter-dimensional horrors beyond human comprehension! This marks the first post of the compendium, as well as the first time I have gotten the chance to write in a while.

Hello, friends, foes, and inter-dimensional horrors beyond human comprehension! This post marks the first post of the compendium and the first time I have gotten the chance to write in a while. Unfortunately, education has been beating out time for creativity, but NO LONGER (for today).

Today, I am covering a vital subject when it comes to reading the story of the Inbetween. What are Davi and Carin? Are they human? What assumptions can we make about their lives and society?

Simply put, Carin and Davi are born from a pocket of space that heavily overlaps with our reality, but they are not from our reality. Moreover, Davi and Carin's physiology is not to be assumed to be human-like. Creatures of the Inbetween are fluid in form and distorted by the space they currently occupy. I will do my best to convey the differences in morphology and appearance as they travel in and out of pockets that produce human-like personas.

This topic leads into one of the more tricky spots of writing this story. Davi and Carin's appearance is best described as one of those faceless yet recognizable people you have in dreams because your brain can't think of faces. They're a mish-mash of millions of different beings and various aspects taken from each, so their exact form is hard to pinpoint. I currently use he/they pronouns for them (subject to change) for word diversity, but that isn't to say their appearance is strictly masculine.

To best enjoy the story, the best advice I can give you is to abandon all human assumptions and preconceived notions completely. You are reading a translation of an alien world created in a space unreachable by the average mortal, and aside from the compendium, I will do my best to leave the reader to either sink or swim. Let this feel like you are reading a familiar yet foreign language of a culture and civilization never before seen. If you can do that, you will have a fantastic time reading about this beautiful world I have been crafting for years and years now.

For now, I will do one more edit run of Chapter 1, and then Chapter 2 should come out sometime this month (March). Leave any questions in the notes, and I will do my best to answer without any spoilies.

when having my son, I immediately felt a huge shift in wanting to share so much, in this new chapter! - but also pull back more than ever, be present.not miss one smirk, stare, or wiggle. (along with not wanting him to only recognize me with an object by my face)

so when I did take a break, I also realized that in a B I G way how much outside noise of constant scrolling, keeping up or being accessible 24:7 can affect me.

it’s amazing what can happen when you take some space, from something that has a huge sensory overload or can be over stimulating and come back to yourself, in any present moment and know what it is you can control instead of the unrealistic pressure that can sometimes be heightened, from constantly seeing hundreds of people a day doing hundreds of different things.

because how far removed are we? that no matter how content and happy you are, you have to want more so quickly.

can we just be, and drown in glory in the boring and simple or inbetween moments.

ontop of that, wherever you are right now the world is heavy.

so a lot of the time wanting to share the good things and what warms my heart, Now’s not the time.

Not that we shouldn’t be sharing good more than ever, but I feel like a hypocrite.

I see so many with platforms not addressing certain realities in our country, communities, own backyards and it angers me.

how can we all be acting like everything is ok.

Then at the same time all you see is one crisis overlap another, and it’s all too much, yet not enough at the same time.

you’re either silent,or too loud. right, or unbelievably wrong. pro or anti. only supportive if you have a voice about every topic and don’t forget to be inclusive.

an expert, or a conspiracy theorist.

privileged, or entitled.

the war is on unity.

you don’t have to act like everything is ok, it’s not.

I've always wished I could have facial hair. And I'll always remember admitting to this in secondary school and getting the piss taken right out of me for it.

Some of us would like the option of sometimes being all dresses and lace and bows and sometimes being handsome with a waistcoat and goatee. But sometimes some of us who have always felt like that since their memories began (since the age of 3) are cursed with being a petite, curvy, 155cm person with a big eyed round face that only really works with the femme option.

I always feel like I can't properly discuss my gender issues because of how I look and the fact that I am so into make-up and fashion in the ways that I am. And I am reeeeally into fashion and make-up. But I know that I have both felt and have vocalised my in-between feelings regarding gender as far back as I can remember - so since I was 3. I would think about gender a lot in relationship to myself growing up, though this was the early 2000s (I was born in '92, so my internal musings on this start at '95 but the most serious of it would be '02 -) so I had none of the resources young people these days have regarding gender-identity. I just know that around the age of 12-14 ('04-'06) the conclusion I came to was 'androgynous on the inside and feminine on the outside'.

People were fine with that but as soon as I expressed a wish for facial hair, it was comedy-time. The reason I like to go with my nickname over my actual name is because it's unisex. (My real name being Lauren and my nickname being Lee. I get called Lee more often than anything else, always have done as it's my family nickname.) I know when I started puberty I had a really fucking tough time with the whole waist-to-hip ratio going all super-femme as it did. I did not appreciate that and I was stare at myself in the mirror freaking out about it. That didn't feel like what my body was supposed to be. I grew out of this and I put it down to an autistic aversion to change thing, but it was major discomfort at the time.

The reason I generally present very feminine (even if it's an edgy hyper-femme, a bit grunge, a bit rock-chick, whatever you want to call it. I got between that and vintage oddball with a lot of overlap inbetween) is because women's clothes have such variety. I can dress eccentrically so easily with women's clothes. I can't dress masculinely all that easily because I a) am 155cm tall (five foot one) and b) have a small frame with a curvy figure. I am so drastically the wrong shape for men's clothes. But I know when I do manage to wear a shirt and tie or anything else stereotypically 'masculine' I get this nice wee burst of euphoria.

I dunno what this culminates in, if anything. I suppose I kind of feel like autism is my gender. Which sounds kind of silly, I know. But it's the best I can come up with.

Puppy Blues-New Hurdles

So, I've gotten over most of my puppy blues at this point. However, I've reached a point with new issues (along with the oldest issue). Potty training has been fine until now. Due to Winter, I focused on training with puppy pads indoors. Everything went great for the most part, with the main issue being that she would occasionally poop on the carpet.

The weather has since gotten warmer and I've started taking her out to pee. It was fine for awhile, she would go as soon as I put her down. That all changed though, when she finally learned how to go up the stairs on her own to go inside. The moment I put her down to pee now, she just tries to run back inside. It warmed up, but not enough for me to hang out outside for 30min to wait for her to go.

On top of that, I reacted (Not angrily, just a "No,no,no!" type thing, this same scenario happened once before with no issue) too much when she tried to poop on the carpet, and now she's hiding to poop...very upsetting because she was just starting to get the hint that she could also poop outside.

This has also been accompanied with a her not going on the pee pads as much as she was before...

...this is all very upsetting and I really hope I can undo to issue with her pooping where I can't see.

(Meanwhile, her littermate always gets yelled at for going on the carpet, but is still willing to do it right in front of you...I try to get her to a pee pad twice and I traumatized her....)

I feel both sad and very frustrated.

Now, onto what is probably the biggest issue..

I don't know where she fits in my life.

Since I got my puppy, every day has been centered around her. Any time she was awake spent playing/training/etc with her. Not one day has been spent comfortably. I'm used to her now, but I want to find a comfortable inbetween. I want to be able to read/play a video game/look for a new job with her just comfortably cuddling or playing by herself.

These issues kind of overlap. It would be great for her to be able to be unsupervised and play with her sister for awhile. However, I can't leave her unsupervised when I know she's not fully potty trained.

On top of all these issues, my grandfather is in the hospital (He seems fine, but he needs to be in the hopial for a week) and we now have his cat with us. It wouldn't be an issue, except that we have 4 pets of our own with various reactions to the new presence.

Life sucks. I'm back to thoughts that getting a puppy was a really bad idea. I shouldn't have done this, I should really just stick to cats for the rest of my life.

I feel like, until I can find a way to fit her in my every day life, I can't truely feel bonded with her...and I hate that.

Piper fit so well. Why did I decide to squeeze Maize in as well? I really hate myself sometimes. What have I done? What can I do to make my life peaceful again?

As an example, let's say the more transparent a world is the more inclined it is to dimensions. More open. The more unrealistic, one could say. Note this is just the world's themselves, it's people may differ.

For example, Quarry is fairly translucent but its people are not interested nor capable of dimension travel. They aren't even really aware of the concept of other dimensions. 

It's the opposite with Ywuscore where the world is darker than even Prowa. It's entirely lacking in magic, yet its (former) inhabitance found ways to travel regardless. You can see how its rim is more see-through, that's because they sanded down its reality with portals.

Sometimes there are exceptions to how dimension savvy a world is. As you can tell from the SaiSai and Pyri example, certain dimensions can be closer together or even overlap. This of, course, effects if and how much the worlds are travel-able. Sometimes they're savvy but only to each other. SaiSai, despite being a fairly opaque world, is translucent when it comes to Pyri and only when it comes to Pyri.

The inbetween it literally the most translucent, it is transparent. It’s the white behind all.

not really headcanons more just pretentious shit i wanted to type out - sometimes it’s good to listen to yourself talk ok 

i quite like writing with npc’s because it gives me a chance to like show what jimmy’s like to people he perceives as below him. i always feel like people i interact with get a sort of skewed view of the sort of guy jimmy actually is cos he has time for them, but i also never write with npcs because if i do i end up writing absolute fucking essays 

i used to rp deadpool and i think that’s why i just say all the crack stuff i write is canon 

this might sound like a dumb thing to say but i have to do things to write. i need to be out exploring and talking to people and it usually inspires me a lot without me noticing. like im not saying i NEED to go on a walk in the woods to start writing but i always find once i’ve done that kind of stuff when i get back i usually have Ideas™. the rule goes that you only ever want to write when you can’t write, for me at least. most of this shit is just daydreams i have at work. that said time’s also the enemy. last night i went out for a walk and by the time i was home i was just too fucked

music plays a big part in what i write but sometimes this fucks me up, sometimes i spend ages looking for the “right song” to write something when really i write just as well when i have like, lofi beats to study to on

i recently found out that the mercenary business in america has a large overlap with nazis however i always thought that alex specifically worked with nazis, this said i’d probably never write anything related to that on this blog. i do have a sidestory in my head where jimmy goes down to florida and ends up killing a bunch of nazis but not like, bc of the morals or anything 

also this doesn’t bug me at all and i’d never correct anyone bc lbr assassin is a cooler word but assassin relates to political killings usually, if your character kills for money they’re a mercenary BUT ALSO i think mercenary usually has connotations of like military training??? i should reiterate this isn’t an actual gripe i have, but none of my characters are assassins

over the years, yena has slowly been collecting more and more ink. it’s definitely a leisurely development, mainly because of the arguing back and forth with management that every new piece takes, needing thorough permission every single time. it might be a gruelling process and yena mourns having to cover them up for performances but at the end of the day, she doesn’t regret any of her pieces,  neat little bits of self-expression scrabbled across her skin. one day, she will be able to get more of them at her every whim, just because she feels like it. for now, she will keep fighting tooth and nail to keep slowly expanding her collection.

headcanon word count: 1,034

general: over the years, yena has slowly been getting tattoos, adding up to a total of 8 at this point. below you can find them listed in chronological order of when she got them, detailing the moment and reason she got them. their placement might differ slightly from the reference images but all in all, the aesthetic should give a solid idea of her tattoos, this headcanon truly just goes a little more in depth.

the crescent moon on her wrist: her first tattoo, one she got in 2014 inbetween ‘female president’ and ‘speed up’ promotions. the specific design doesn’t hold too much significance other than that she thought it was pretty. she’d been braining on the idea of getting a tattoo for a while but having only turned major of age that year, there hadn’t been much opportunity to get one done. with calypso’s change in concept to a more sexier look rather than their cute and sometimes silly image, dimensions was a little more lenient with letting her get her tattoo.

the butterflies along her underboob: on the one hand, dimensions was a little bit more laid-back letting her get a tattoo that would never end up on camera due to it’s private placement. on the other hand, asking dimensions if she could get an underboob tattoo was quite an awkward affair. she got the tattoo done in mid to late 2015, a period that was quite low on schedules for calypso giving her plenty of time to get the piece and let it heal up without any scheduling conflict. the butterflies are placed a little more snugly to her underboob than the reference picture and there are a few more of them but the idea remains the same, fanning outward until they reach her side. they’re meant to symbolise freedom, yena remains a bit of a wild child at heart after all but she also just really thinks the placement is pretty. yena loves a good sexy tattoo.

the dandelion on her ankle: this one yena got the afternoon after extending her contract with dimensions entertainment in 2017. it’s something of a good luck charm to her, a silent wish for calypso to make a turn-around in their second contract and finally gather some more attention. they still haven’t and at this point, yena isn’t quite sure if she still believes in it but she doesn’t regret the tattoo. it’s still a good luck charm in the broader sense of the word, good things have still come to her after getting the piece and yena is just superstitious enough to believe her tattoo has had some influence on it

the hearts on her finger: a birthday present she gave herself for her 22nd birthday back in 2017. it’s just a small tattoo, two overlapping hearts, one red and one black that, unlike the reference photo, are actually placed along the side of her finger and a little bit further down, closer to the knuckle. the tattoo is located on the ring finger of her right hand, leaving the left hand for any potential marriage reasons later down in life. yena has gotten the tattoo touched up just last year in 2020, something she will probably end up doing every few years but she doesn’t mind, it’s pretty.

the cherries above her elbow: another tattoo that yena kind of just got because, her favorite tattoo artist posted the sketch of it somewhere and yena liked it so much that she asked her to put it on hold for her for a bit while she went to bicker with management why she most definitely needed another tattoo. eventually she got permission and the rest was history. contrary to the reference pic, the tattoo is actually located on the side of her upperarm, just slightly above the crook of her elbow. together with one of the two hearts on her finger, it’s one of her only tattoos with color, giving it a nice little pop in the entire composition of her pieces.

the heart on her sternum: yena’s manager is a poor woman that’s very, very tired of yena’s boob inquiries. not only did yena already have a tattoo located around the area, she had already gotten both her nipples pierced at that point (because yena has double nipple piercings, that doesn’t go here but it felt very important to point out anyway). still, yena insisted she absolutely required another one, just to finish off the area, have it all tie in together nicely. it’s a simple outline of a heart symbol, right on the bottom of her sternum. neither it’s placement or it’s shape are very anatomically correct but it’s pretty and truly, shouldn’t that be enough?

the rose on the back of her arm: in size, it’s probably yena’s biggest tattoo. which doesn’t say much, most of her tattoos are pretty small and this one doesn’t stand much taller than 7 centimeters at the most. it’s probably the tattoo that took the most bickering with management to get approved, especially because she already had a handful and this one was just a little bit bigger. the original plan to get it had been made in 2020 but it wasnt until spring 2021 she actually got permission to go for it. roses are, as cliché as they are, probably yena’s favorite flowers, both because of how beautiful they are and their romantic connotation, truly making it only a matter of time before she got one tattooed.

the flame symbol on her hipbone: dimensions should know better than to let calypso go on year long hiatuses, they’re the perfect opportunity for yena to get all the random tattoos she could possibly think of. the flame symbol she got was probably her most impulsive tattoo (as impulsive as something you have to get permission for can be) and almost no one knows she got it done to begin with. while she has hinted at having more tattoos than fans know she has, this one has been from after that time. it’s just a sexy little secret and while few people know about it, most who do seem little surprised at the notion, it really suits yena.

Abinary - Any gender that is completely unrelated to maleness/masculinity or to femaleness/femininity, and is nowhere inbetween, while not necessarily being agender, although agender people may also identify as abinary. (This is an umbrella term, but may also be used as a specific gender, similar to the term nonbinary!)

Neutrois - A gender that is neutral or null. It is sometimes considered an umbrella term, with each person experiencing “neutrois” differently. Common definitions include feeling a gender that is neutral, gender that is null or void, or similar genderless feelings to agender.

Maverique - A gender that is defined completely independent from male, female, neutral, or anything derived from any of them. It is characterized by autonomy and inner conviction regarding a sense of gender which is unorthodox, unconventional and entirely independent of conventional concepts of gender. Maveriques have a distinct and firm sense of gender that is not male or female.

*Aporagender - A gender/gender spectrum defined as being "a gender separate from male, female, and anything in between, while still having a very strong and specific gendered feeling". Aporagender people are not a combination of male and female, but and still have a strong gendered feeling, unlike agender.

*Note: Maverique and aporagender were coined around the same time, and have a large overlap. The main difference is that aporagender can be used as an umbrella, and by definiton includes genders like neutrois and maverique, while maverique is its own specific gender.

These are only a few examples! I suggest searching “abinary” or “autonomous” genders to find more. It’s also worth noting that many xenogenders are unaligned or don’t have a connection to the binary, so they might be worth looking into as well!

(I’d also like to mention: The term “third gender” has racist and xenophobic roots, and should be avoided! There are many other terms to choose from, please don’t use that one.)

Dodder, mainly holoparasitic in nature with interesting ecological ramifications on local populations wherever it might be found.

Cuscuta gronovii is perhaps the most abundant species in our region, with seemingly rugose texture, a habit of colonizing stream beds and riparian systems including herbaceous flood plaines, this plant can be distributed by water fairly easily and reduce competition around the boundry of the plant by signifigantly reducing the vigour of it’s host. It’s known for tageting specific species after germination through chemical signalling factors and then getting less picky with host specific hunting as the plant gets bigger. Impatiens capensis and I. pallida are great examples of plants easily targeted by this species.  I say seemingly rugose as a characteristic because this plant is legitemently glaborous but forms a rugose texture wherever it touches an object. Plants that rapidly twine or react by auxin and growth response to touch after receiving positive pressure are acting by thigmotropism. You may know of phototropism and gravitropism from any Bio 101 course; these are growth due to auxin transport from light stimulous or growth due to protein stimuli from gravity respectivly. These bumps will form from touch to aid the plant in stabalizing it’s self and gripping it’s surroundings primarily, after they form though they have the ability to specialize again if they come in contact with a proper host. Haustorium form from these sites and penatrate into the phloem and xylem of the host where they can feed off of the hosts nutrients freely and as well as their water reserves; but something else is going on here with these haustorium in the genera Cuscuta that adds even more interest, this is gene sharing, or Horizontal Gene Transfer(HGT).

 HGT is most common in Bacteria and in Viruses. In viruses esspecially we see HGT formation from a number of different ways and Transposable elements or transposons(hopping genes) are the most recognizable in organisms. How do we recognize these, blasted sequences from organisms show small variation from individual to individual, these variations are capped with palandromic base pair sequences, also known as inverted repeats in the tails. These sequences can hop around once translated fully as they do they may be recognized and cause mutations or be deleted out right, sometimes they don’t do anything. Transposase is the enzyme capable of lifting these coding regions and moving them else where and is found within the structural gene/ coding region of these gene complexes. Most transposons are located near the centromere where they are not as easy to detect. Again these are very common and are a potential reason for variable mutations if they are accidentally duplicated or fall inbetween specific genes and disrupt the gene from making proper amino acid sequences. Many errors become deletarious over time but the ones that are beneficial for the organism can be preserved and beneficial(selected for).

Plant to plant HGT is very rare though unlike virus- organism or bacteria to bacteria HGT. With one genera though, it is commonplace and that’s Cuscuta.

While most HGT detectable in genes from blasted sequence comparison seems to do little in most plants functionally, it is theorized that if gene disruption potentially occurs on a large scale we can see interesting things like cliestogamous flowers becoming uncliestogomous and vise versa or over production in different hormones by dosage compensation events,) even full gene disruption in a specific population or individual (again these are theorized and not fully accepted as what is going on). This concept of HGT disruption would be very rare, and in many cases HGT is not breaking a coding region or landing in an exon, so nothing happens to cause functional mutations. In genetics we can compare these to the many types of mutations and their corrisponding issues. The types of mutations commonly spoken of are: point mutation, duplication, deletion, insertion, and frameshifts. Each may have different evolutionary signifigance and are studied to specificity.

For the most part, Cuscuta spp. are mainly trying to lower plant defenses in their host species, reduce vigor and make it harder to fight off an invasion.  The horizontal gene transfter that is purposeful and does work is known as functional HGT (fHGT), This type of HGT is increasingly being recognized in heterotrophic parasitic plants, hemi and holo. In one recent paper, the ecology is described for common fHGT mechanism in C. campestris.

Real quick, to clarify, DNA methylation is an epigenetic change to DNA where a a methyl group is added to cytosine to make 5-methylcytosine and stop promotion. Epigentic changes do not directly affect the coding region.  Methylation is essentially used for gene repression and prevents transcription events.  

Anywho, next time you see some german egg yolk vine aka dodder aka speghetti vine, stop and give it a look. their is a lot going on...
