i have many thoughts on nitw and there's not enough nitw content out there so I'm going to make my own content.

the song "ol pickaxe" plays when you go into the hardware store where bea works. the song has a distinctly "home depot" sound - it's the kind of light, casual, calming, instrumental music that you hear in hardware stores.

but there's more to it than that. there's an undeniable sadness. it is the sound of something that was once known, if not meaningful, but has now become only an emotional burden.

not something bad, or evil. i don't think bea sees the pickaxe as evil. just something exhausting. she grew up in that store. she may have always wanted out, but there was probably a time when she was a kid that it really felt like home. she loved it like you love your childhood home. it's safe, but it's not forever.

but she's been there too long. she and her dad are living in an apartment now. whatever sense of stability the store gave is now so unwelcome. the only thing in her life that hasn't been ripped away from her is the store. the curse of her family that's fallen on her, no matter how desperately she tries to get away. what was once a warm hug is now a pillow over her face.

she resents it at this point. the store has beyond overstayed its welcome in her life. this is music that will make you cry if you listen to it for too long. as its own tune, if it were outside of the game, I am fully convinced that it would still convey the feelings of desperation to leave something that had such an impact on you as a child. she's wistful for a future that she feels has already gone by her.

the song is beautiful and hauntingly soothing. but no matter what it tries to be, it's just a tune in a hardware store in a dying town in the rust belt.

Donnie:

favourite genre is electric (canon)

also likes techno, hyperpop, and lo-fi

listens to Lemon Demon, Jack Stauber, The Living Tombstone, Bo Burnham, and Will Wood

won't let Raph pick music in the Turtle Tank

vibes with Leo to meme songs in the middle of the night (insomniac twins)

shares a playlist with Mikey that contains songs they both enjoy

plays Friday Night Funkin' music while working in the lab

can sing in-key for the most part

despises it when people talk to him while he's listening to music

Raph:

favourite genre is soul (canon)

also likes R&B, jazz, and funk

listens to The Beatles, Earth Wind and Fire, Rex Orange County, Girl in Red, and ABBA

genuinely doesn't understand Donnie's music, but can get by it

sue me idc but i think that Jason and Tim would both like things that are considered "childish" typically, i.e. Legos or dinosaurs or stuffed rabbits random stuff like that and they would both try and hide the fact until one of em found out, in my brain it goes like this:

Jason is rearranging his room and has a box of action figures n Legos set out and Tim comes in while he's cleaning and sees the box and Jason starts to get defensive but then Tim just grabs his arm and leads him to his room where he has a similar bin filled w various stuffed toys n Legos and colored pencils. they bond over this shared trait, building new Lego sets together or on some occasions playing with action figures of themselves. they both have this trait for different reasons tho -

For Jason, his parents couldn't afford toys or wouldn't buy them for him and wnv his mom tried to get him a toy his dad always ended up breaking it or it wouldn't even be a toy in the first place it'd just be some trash, and then when he became homeless he just couldn't afford toys/didn't want to seem "weak".

For Tim tho, his parents wanted him to succeed and they thought having "childish interests" like drawing or playing with Legos would hinder his maturity and so he never got to experience those various joys after the age of like, 6

So for both of them, moving to the manor and having some amount of wealth gave them the opportunity to relive parts of their childhood that they were never allowed to experience fully.

This isn't to say that none of the other batkids would play w Legos or have stuffed animals, just that i think Jason and Tim would feel like they had to hide it moreso than others.

For my troll changeling character Faas. Just gonna infodump cuz I can, but- Numerous neurodivergent (especially autistic), ill, blind, or deformed babies, along with older children and adults with personality disorders, were abused emotionally and physically, and some even murdered, because they were exhibiting signs of being a "changeling". Faas is autistic, but that will never actually be confirmed verbally in his book. I won't say tons, but he's got a daughter named Enya (who will get a board shortly) and they live in this marshy forested area in Pennsylvania. Cottage beans.
