Instead, Nie Mingjue chokes on his tea and turns bright red.
Wen Qing carefully re-evaluates her earlier observations about lack of interest.
Or: Nie Mingjue needs to bottom to prevent a qi deviation.
How convenient, then, that he has two sworn brothers to help him!
This fic was inspired by @littlesmartart ’s fanart of @lilnasxvevo ’s post because the concept just wouldn’t leave me alone.

Bright the Day We Met
by ereshai (@ereshai)
G, 1k, Wangxian
Summary: Xichen wasn’t even sure Wangji was open to finding his soulmate. The mechanism of soulmate matching was inexact and open to misinterpretation. It was very frustrating. Wangji had always preferred certainty. Kay's comments: A cute little outsider POV story where we follow Lan Xichen watching over his brother as he first meets his soulmate. I really enjoyed how soul marks work in this story, very creative! And I'm always weak for some good outsider POV. Excerpt: A group of visiting students from Yunmeng Jiang wandered by on their way to the first class of the day. Despite their hushed voices, they were a noisy bunch, especially in contrast to the silent groups of Lan students who sedately made their way to the classrooms. “Lan-er-gongzi,” one of the boys in the Jiang group shouted. Xichen recognized Wei Wuxian, Sect Leader Jiang’s ward. Wangji turned his head away. “Hey, it’s me,” Wei Wuxian continued. “I’m not late! Aren’t you proud of me?” Xichen felt as if he had missed something. Wei Wuxian had arrived yesterday with the rest of the Jiang contingent. As lively as he was, he had certainly made an impression during the welcome reception, but Wangji had not been present for it. However, there had been a misunderstanding at the gate when they arrived, and Wangji had returned at that time…
pov outsider, pov lan xichen, canon divergence, soulmate-identifying marks, soulmates, supportive lan xichen, good sibling lan xichen, lan xichen/nie mingjue, nielan, fluff, first meetings, getting together

For wen!wei wuxian au, I would love to read something from lan jingyi's perspective during or after the whole arrow thing
In the days after the battle at Pingquan, Lan Jingyi hardly left his bed.
He had feared his father's anger at his deception since the very moment he decided to join the war effort: but in true child-fashion, he never once dreamed that his blunders on the battlefield would bring about his family's utter ruin.
Zhan-shushu, taken captive and tortured. The most important spy for the resistance, maimed for life by a poisoned arrow that was loosed by Jingyi's own hand.
His father had not punished him. Perhaps he understood that no punishment could be worse than watching his uncle falling to his knees, the tip of a bloody Wen spearhead at his throat, and shouting for Father to leave him and flee with Jingyi. Perhaps he holds himself responsible for the whole debacle, believing that he ought to have noticed Jingyi switching places with the young soldier in the eighth regiment. Or perhaps—and Jingyi cannot help but pray that he is mistaken—he intends to storm the Wen camp with his generals and free Zhan-shushu during the night, without a care for what might happen to him during the rescue.
"No," Father says hollowly, when Jingyi finally dares to ask if he plans to go after Zhan-shushu. "You must be taken back to safety, and we have wounded to tend—and the Wen will be thrice as vicious as usual now that Wei Wuxian has been injured. We're going home."
"But—!"
His father turns away, already calling for Nie Zonghui to help him prepare for their departure: and after they set off for Qinghe, Jingyi is left to himself until the regiment reaches the crossroad near Tangshan.
"Come on," Fuqin tells him, in the same dreadful, empty voice he spoke with the day before. "You and I are going to the Cloud Recesses."
Jingyi's blood runs cold. "W-why?"
"You must return to your Ba, where it is safe, and I must give him the news about Wangji in person. I can't leave a thing like this to A-Sang or Zonghui."
With that, Fuqin picks Jingyi up and sets him on Baxia's hovering blade as if he weighed no more than a kitten; and so, they begin the long, cold journey to Gusu.
They alight at the gate beneath the Cloud Recesses to find Jingyi's Baba already waiting for them. At a glance, he seems to understand that something has gone terribly wrong: so he turns around without another word and leads them up to the Hanshi, where Father finally breaks the news about Zhan-shushu's fate in Pingquan.
In all his seventeen years, Lan Jingyi had never seen his Ba cry. His Fuqin cries often, and the entire family knows how to comfort him when he does—but he was too shamed to shed a single tear when he told Jingyi's Baba about Zhan-shushu, and Ba was so distraught upon hearing the news that he nearly wept himself sick.
Captured. Captured. The terrible word has not left Jingyi's thoughts since he watched the Wens haul Zhan-shushu away; and that night, he lies in bed and wishes with all his might that he could wake up and find himself back in the Unclean Realm, where he was meant to be running errands for the quartermasters as they went about their daily duties.
Captured and tortured. After the Wen forces split in two, with half remaining at the battlefront and half retreating with Wei-jiangjun and Jingyi's uncle in tow, Nie Zonghui followed Wei-jiangjun's regiment on foot for three miles and returned to report that the general was near death—and that his men, enraged by their lord's cries of agony, had stripped the robes from Zhan-shushu's back and whipped half the flesh off his bones.
Zhan-shushu did not cry out, or so Nie Zonghui said. He was tied to stake planted in the earth, with his bonds fastened at waist-height so that he would be forced to kneel; and the whipping did not cease until thirty-three stripes had been laid on Zhan-shushu's back, at which point Wei-jiangjun's screams finally faltered and fell silent.
Lan Jingyi hears his father relay all this to his Ba with tears running down his cheeks; and when he is dismissed, he retreats to his bedroom and bolts the door in his wake.
But as luck would have it, his solitude does not last very long. His sister Jueying picks the lock in less than half a shichen, determined to drag him out for dinner and a bath. After he eats and bathes in the Hanshi's little hot spring, she follows him back to his room and insists on snuggling into bed with him; and the next morning, she drops the baby twins into his lap and orders him to cuddle them until he feels better.
"I don't think the twins are going to help, Yingying," he chokes, holding little Yunhua close to his chest. "Not when our shushu—when Zhan-shushu is—"
"He's not dead, so just stop," Lan Jueying snaps: but her voice is trembling, too, and Jingyi is suddenly certain that she must have cried earlier that morning, before he was awake enough to hear her. "He's an important prisoner, isn't he? Wen Ruohan's not just going to kill him."
Yet again, Jingyi thinks of his magnificent uncle—Gusu Lan's Hanguang-jun, the envy of every clan under the sun save the one to which he belonged—brought to his knees and taken captive due to Jingyi's foolhardiness, so that Jingyi might live, and stuffs his fist into his mouth to keep himself from sobbing out loud.
But then Fuqin and Baba call the four of them out for breakfast: and over their bowls of porridge and tea, Ba breaks the news that he, too, is going away to war.
"There is nothing else we can do," he says, as the poor baby twins—who have never known what it was for the six of them to live as a united family, since Father first rode to battle ten weeks after Yunhua and Yunhai were born—keep nibbling their sticks of youtiao in his lap. "Someone will have to take Wangji's place, and I may be able to keep up Wei-jiangjun's correspondence with his spies on the Jiangling front. I must go."
"What about the wards?" Jingyi says raggedly. "If you follow Father to Hejian—who's going to uphold them?"
Baba wraps a comforting arm around his shoulders; and in that instant, Lan Jingyi understands exactly what his father meant by must.
Jingyi is his parents' sole cultivated child, the only one whose physical form arose from Ba's lingli instead of his blood and body. As far as the protection seals are concerned, Lan Xichen and Lan Jingyi are one and the same, indistinguishable—and if Ba transcribes the anchoring arrays that uphold the wards on Jingyi's skin, he will be able to depart from the Cloud Recesses and leave the warding sigils untouched.
"I'll do it," he whispers at last. "I'll take care of the Cloud Recesses for you, Ba. Go."

currently spinning the thought in my head that... we’re told how empathy shows what someone most wants to share & so much of nie mingjue’s empathy sequence is about lan xichen. like, yes, it’s about what jgy did but there is still a significant amount of focus on lxc’s kindness and warmth.
this is someone who’s stewed in his own hatred for a decade and still what he is saying is not just this is what was done to me; this is who did it but also this man is innocent and kind and nothing of what happened was his fault. even through death and a resentment so intense it surprised wei fucking wuxian, nie mingjue only ever shows lan xichen in a positive light. even knowing that his death was plotted and executed using tools given by lan xichen, nie mingjue thinks him blameless because those tools were handed out with nothing but good and pure intentions.
like. what the fuck. come on.

I'm trying to write the most NieYao-centric content on AO3
Will be updated as I go
With my heart in the palm of your hand : 6.5K, E (bdsm/kink, sexual content, trauma)
Curious about the appeal of being a submissive, Nie Mingjue asks Meng Yao to take control during sex. Meng Yao unveils more than he bargained for.
The ocean's face : 83K, E (r*pe/noncon, blood/torture, graphic violence, sexual content)
If Huaisang gives himself away now, Meng Yao thought, Clan Leader Nie will never forgive me. “You must be Wen Xu,” he forced himself to utter. His throat was parched, drier than the landscape, but from that strain he shook an accent deeper, defiant enough to be a young master of the Nie household. Wen Xu smiled at him coolly, walking closer. “Indeed I am,” the Wen heir confessed. “The same that laid waste to Cloud Recesses all those years ago.” He crouched down to be level with Meng Yao on the ground, an elbow on one knee, and smiled at him patronizingly. “All the good Clan Leader Nie’s intervention did to stop it. By which of course, I mean, none.” Meng Yao lurched forward threateningly. He did not have to feign the rage in his heart to solidify his attackers’ false deductions. -- Mistaken for Nie Huaisang, Meng Yao is kidnapped by the Wen. Nie Mingjue and Huaisang must justify going after him, though there are many in Qinghe and Qishan who believe Meng Yao is unworthy and replaceable. Nie Mingjue is determined to bring him home – but will Meng Yao be the same when he returns?
Bathtime : 6.7K, M (fluff, smut, slow-burn)
Meng Yao is eager to please his new superior. Nie Mingjue is the one who promoted him to his current position to be able to afford such luxuries, after all. When Clan Leader Nie makes it a habit for them to share a weekly bath, however, Meng Yao hesitates over the man’s true intentions all along.
Tracing the Bounds of Your Flames : 63K, E (dubcon, mild noncon, graphic violence)
Demonic cultivation demands a heavy toll from the heartiest souls. None recover, even when trained to combat its malefic influence since their youth. Nie Mingjue knows this well, yet Meng Yao can only see him as the enigmatic clan leader, the man with an exterior so cold he has no idea why Nie Mingjue saved his life at all. Ensnared in a discipline and authority that threatens to devour them both, will Meng Yao be able to let go of his past, or will he destroy everything he holds dear in the process of trying to gain control?
Within these Walls : 1.7K, E (dubcon)
Nie Mingjue gave Meng Yao his home, his life, his bed. But it wasn’t meant to last. He went too far – a mistake he would pay for the rest of his life.
Other MDZS:
Devotion : SongXueXiao, XueXiao & SongXiao focus, 2.8K, M
Song Lan and Xue Yang killed each other in Yi City. So Xiao Xingchen ventures into the underworld to find them.
Painting You : SangCheng, background NieYao, 10.7K, M
“What’s so stupid about it?” Huaisang snaps. “Every sect leader needs someone to help them run things, even my…” Even my brother, once. Jiang Cheng rounds on him. “Oh yeah? Then what about you? Now that you’re Sect Leader Nie, you’ll need to find yourself a wife.” Huaisang laughs. “Jiang-xiong, you should know I could never marry. Not a woman, at least.” He says it lightly, half expecting Jiang Cheng to laugh along with him, but Jiang Cheng’s back goes stiff as a rod. He leans visibly away. “What? You mean you’re a… a cut-sleeve?!” Huaisang guffaws, hoarse and loud. He bats his eyelashes, crested with tears, and rolls one shoulder toward Jiang Cheng as he snatches up his fan. “Why of course, Jiang-xiong. Surely, you already knew.” Apparently, Jiang Cheng did not already know.
Droplets on your qin : NieLan, 5.2K, M
It’s been a long time since Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue were able to catch up. They make the most of their time while they can.
I weep & say goodnight : SongXueXiao, SongXue focus, 4.6K, M
The world is ending, and Xue Yang is offered to the heavens as a sacrificial lamb. In his final moments, will he be able to live out his fantasy of sharing in death with his two most intimate adversaries, or will they all fade into nothing in the face of total annihilation?

MDZS for Gaza Event: Fic Prompt #3
It seemed like Lan Zhan only had time to blink before the firetruck was peeling out of the bay, sirens blaring. He glanced up in time to see Wei Ying wave at him with the stuffed shark in one hand, using the other to blow him a kiss as the truck passed. Then he was gone, off being beautiful and competent somewhere else. Lan Zhan stood, rooted in place and already resigned to his brother’s knowing smirk, the inevitable teasing from him and now Nie Mingjue, and the vaguely annoyed realization that Uncle was going to be so, so smug about this.

Golden Time
Nie Huaisang felt aged beyond his years, as he stared at the bloodied hat of what had been Jin Guangyao. The carefully gold-embroidered hat was the results of his labor, his fruits ripe after a decade of effort, and above all, proof his duty was finally fulfilled.
(But even though he felt his heavy burdens lighten, Nie Huaisang found true victory tasted not as sweet, not like what he thought in the early days of his grief.)
Nie Huaisang stood up, moving out from behind the shadow of his brother’s grave, and onto the temple and sun. He stood at the top of the stairs, and watched the people down below, and witnessed each happiness intimately, the one oozing from between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangj, or the quiet joy from Sect Leader Jiang and Jin Ling.
And closer, but still further, Nie Huaisang saw Sect Leader Lan sitting on the last of the stone stairs, fiddling with the crushed leaves Nie Huaisang had left in his wake, who finally leveled his gaze onto the young Sect Leader.
Nie Huaisang looked down from above, and only smiled, like he had for years.
(To Nie Huaisang, his piercing stare was heavy with years of truth and betrayal, that swirled throughout the stairs of Guanyin Temple, like cold winds. And while it’d be a lie for Nie Huaisang to not have felt its weight, he’d never admit to feeling that, most of all to Lan Xichen.)
And instead said to Lan Xichen:
“Er-ge, you should really get going. The sun will set soon and the clouds will cover the skies again. You’d surely not want to fly on your sword, through the darkness.”
But as the cover of darkness fell from the sky, and Sect Leader Nie saw the shadows recede on swords, he too sat where Sect Leader Lan had done as well, and stayed there for a little while longer, with the hat heavy in between his hands.

3zun data analysis part 2 electric boogaloo
So in my first post on 3zun data analysis I said I manually excluded all non-3zun ships in the 3zun tag to figure out how many of them were actually centered around 3zun.
So that's... actually not how i first went about that. Instead, I decided to, one after the other, include each 2-out-of-3zun ship, and then manually exclude every relationship not contained in 3zun. (leaving te other 2-out-of-3zun ships alone) Then, I'd figure out how many of these fics were exclusively tagged the ship I included, how many included only one of the other 2 ships, and how many included all 3, which would allow me to calculate how many 3zun fics in total had 2-out-of-3zun ships included but no other side pairings, which, upon being added to the otp:true fics, should give me the total number of 3zun fics exclusively focused on 3zun.
"Wow! That seems really inefficient" yes! But it did give me more information for this post. Because with these numbers, I can somewhat crudely estimate what 2-out-of-3zun pairing tends to get more narrative focus within 3zun fics.
Here are the results, data collected on march 18th 2024:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are 196 3zun fics tagged with xiyao and no non-3zun relationships. Of these, 151 are also tagged nieyao, and 137 are tagged nielan.
Coincidentally, nieyao has the same number, also 196, 151 of wich are also tagged xiyao, but only 117 are tagged nielan.
Then there are 159 3zun fics tagged nielan with no non-3zun pairings, with 137 of them also being tagged xiyao and 117 nieyao. (I hope you've all noticed those numbers matching up!)
by the way, here are the raw stats in just the plain vanilla 3zun tag, no filters, for how many fics are tagged with the different ot2s.
Tumblr media
Also, this has nothing to do with anything, but for nielan and xiyao i mostly had to filter out relatively normal side pairings, a few crossovers with mxtx's other works or different danmei, nothing too weird. But the nieyao tag had THIS
Tumblr media
JESUS/JUDAS??? IN MY NIEYAO?? It's more likely than you think!!
Anyway, to the complicated numbers! Selecting for all 3 after excluding everything else gives you 112 fics.
Tumblr media
With these numbers you can now calculate some really fun stuff. Taking the fics tagged with both xiyao and nieyao (151) and subtracting the fics tagging all 3 (112) you get the number of 3zun fics that are only tagged as xiyao and nieyao, excluding nielan. In this case: 39
"Couldn't you just exclude nielan on ao3" you have to understand I like doing things the hard way.
Doing this gives:
Fics tagged nieyao and xiyao but not nielan: 39
Fics tagged xiyao and nielan but not nieyao: 25
Fics tagged nieyao and nielan but not xiyao: 5
Generally tagging 2 ot2 pairings in an ot3 signals that either the relationship is a V and the excluded ship are not together, or that- even if they're a triad- the excluded ship doesn't feature in the narrative much. As you can see, xiyao is by far the least likely to be excluded here.
Now doing some more math (or, if you're normal, clicking a few extra times on ao3) will give you the fics exclusively tagged with one ot2 pairing besides 3zun. Generally that means that this relationship is the narrative focus, even if all of 3zun are together.
And these results actually surprised me.
Fics exclusively tagged xiyao: 196 - 112 - 39 - 25 = 20
Fics exclusively tagged nielan: 159 - 112- 25 - 5 = 17
Fics exclusively tagged nieyao: 196 - 112 - 39 - 5 = 40
I checked the answers by actually filtering on ao3 (making all my work redundant) and uh. Yeah. I had expected that, with xiyao being the least likely to be excluded, the most commonly tagged ship in 3zun overall, and simply the most popular ship, they'd be first here too.
And yet, not only does nieyao have more fics, it has more than nielan and xiyao combined. Despite having less fics in total than either of the other 2!
Out of interest, I repeated the experiment without manually excluding all the unrelated ships.
Basically, for each 2-out-of-3zun ship, I only filtered out the two other ships. This data will give us the same insight into narrative focus, just without excluding all other non 3zun rleated side pairings.
This time I just included one ship, and excluded the other 2-out-of-3zun ships. (the hard math comes later)
Doing this gives:
3zun fics only tagged xiyao: 45
3zun fics only tagged nielan: 33
3zun fics only tagged nieyao: 59
It's a less drastic difference, but nieyao still come out on top!!
What this means, I think, is that people with nieyao as their absolute favorite side of the triangle are a lot more likely to write 3zun fics than those for whom the same is true for nielan or xiyao.
That is to say: Someone who likes all 3zun pairings equally is more likely to write 3zun where the pairings all share narrative balance. And if you really really really love xiyao, and think nieyao and nielan are pretty ok but you don't go crazy over them, you're a lot more likely to just write a solo xiyao fic than you are a xiyao-focused 3zun fic. Idem ditto for nielan. But if nieyao is your absolute fave, you wanna put those guys in a throuple anyway.
What I'm saying is I think nieyaoists are the subfandom of triangular desire. Which... *looks at my own mutuals*... is the least surprising thing i've ever said.
Anyway! I didn't stop there! I wanted to see which pairings were more likely to get tagged together again. I also decided to make things even harder for myself!
Instead of filtering one ship at a time and seeing how many of each of the others were tagged alongside it, like i did last time, I only gave myself a few figures to calculate it manually: The overall number of tags each had in the 3zun tag (348, 328, and 284, as pictured above) the afformentioned data about exclusively tagged fics, and the number of fics tagged with all three 2-out-of-3zun ships (175)
Rather than a simple subtraction, I had to... Well i'm just gonna let y'all look at my notes app. I wanna stress that i could have looked all of this up in minutes and in fact did later to check my answers! No time was saved! A lot was wasted!
But I like number so 👉👈
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tldr:
Fics tagged xiyao and nieyao but not nielan: 73
Fics tagged xiyao and nielan but not nieyao: 55
Fics tagged nieyao and nielan but not xiyao: 21
Once again, similar but slightly less drastic results.
With this I can only come to one conclusion: the fandom likes to joke about 3zun being a love triangle with xichen in the middle. But looking at these numbers? The real center is jiggy. Everything revolves around a-yao, baby!.

"You have the prettiest laugh I've ever heard, I would like more~"
"XiChehen, if you keep- stahahahap!"
Lan XiChen had never felt so much adrenaline coursing through his veins. Not even on the most dangerous of night hunts, but right now, while having Nie MingJue pinned to the wooden floor of the HanShi, his strong arms locked behind his back by one of Lan XiChen's hands, he really felt like he was pushing his luck.
Especially since he was tickling that super tender spot he had found a few weeks ago, (when they were... doing some night activities that had nothing to do with demons or undead), finding it out had sentenced him to an intense tickling session in his most sensitive spot and, to his embarrassment, he still remembered his hysterical laughter filling the entire room.
Right now, they had been simply training, wrestling a little to 'blow off some steam', as Nie MingJue had said, but Lan XiChen could tell he just wanted to wrestle to have fun. He clearly wouldn't deny him the pleasure, but he didn't think that just a few seconds later, he would have the upper hand.
He saw Nie MingJue growling and huffing under him, writhing to push Lan XiChen off him, and that was where Lan XiChen saw his opportunity, it was right there, that specific spot on Nie MingJue's ribs, and his hand moved before his brain could think it twice.
"But you barely indulge me with your true laugh, MingJue-Xiong!" He said, his fingers spreading against Nie MingJue's ribs, thumb digging in the back, the rest in the front, making loud laugh flood past his lips.
"AHAHAHA! Lahahan XiChehehehen! S-Stohop thihihis instahahant or ehehelse!"
Lan XiChen chuckled, but he didn't stop, on the contrary, he took a seat on top of Nie MingJue's lower back and let go of his arms to use both hands on his ribs.
"I'll kihihihill you! Juhuhust y-yohohou wahahait!" Nie MingJue threatened him, but laughing so hard like that, Lan XiChen almost didn't believe him. Almost. Nie MingJue would definitely kill him once this was over, but it was worth it.
"Will you?" Lan XiChen teased. "You are laughing so hard, are you sure you will be able to do so?"
A certain fluttery feeling spread in his chest when he notice the lightest pink hue dusting the tips of Nie MingJue's ears.

For lowering himself from puppet master to a beloved’s plaything and catering to the whims of one who would never know his migraine-inducing efforts, if all went as planned. They would be entirely wrong. Jin Guangyao was giving up nothing. He was gifting it. In his opinion, there was no one more deserving of his sleepless nights, endless planning, and careful manipulation than his sworn brother, who he loved more than his own life. . . . What if Jin Guangyao decided Lan Xichen’s favor was more important than revenge?
