@lesbiancassius' (very late) february reads
yes I will do this monthly now.
books (as it turns out, I was busy. one book)
Enter Ghost, Isabella Hammad - An actor, Sonia, returns to visit her sister Haneen in Haifa and gets caught up in playing Gertrude in a Hamlet production in the West Bank. Stellar.
short fiction & poetry
Why Don’t We Just Kill the Kid in the Omelas Hole, Isabel J. Kim - obsessed with this on title alone. It has such a feel to it in the way it moves that I envy.
Parthenogenesis, Piya Patel - horror that makes me want to peel out of my skin and/or get a hysterectomy.
Eschatology, Eve L. Ewing - poem that was circulating recently and God. Fuck, dude. Yeah. Yeah.
Ouroboros, Megan Xing - The to-do lists in this got me because I was having my little freak out before my show went up where you think you can fix everything with to-do lists. Also heavily feeling replacing ineffective psych meds with yogurt, a pickle, and two advil.
I also read Cancer Buffet by Mary Hannah Terzino and Soft Opening by Elle Nash, but I was tired and don’t remember them.
(some) articles
Who Was Barbie? (A Symposium), n+1 magazine - this cemented to me that I truly, truly do not care about Barbie or the Barbie movie and if I have to hear anything about it ever again I'm smashing a bowl on purpose
A bunch of Hera Lindsay Bird’s advice column, which is delightful.
Let’s talk about Goodreads, Nicole Brinkley. There are many days I am glad I do not want to pursue a career as solely an author of novels. Godspeed to the authors out there you're braver than I will ever be.
Saving a Life, Patricia Lockwood - my god I have got to read a Patricia Lockwood book, and also my god getting grievously ill on vacation is one of my greatest fears so this one made me a little bit crazy.
The Secret Life: On the poet Molly Brodak, Patricia Lockwood - again, my god, I need to read a Patricia Lockwood book.
A Final Checklist Before You Print up Your Play, Rick Roberts - this reminded me so much of Joshua McGuire’s Rules For Writing Libretto, which I think of a lot.
“I think the word is dignity” — Rachel Corrie’s Letters from Gaza — I don’t know what to say. Read these if you can. They’re striking.
The Sexual Status of Aeschylus’ Cassandra, Paula Debnar - I can put an academic paper here you're not the boss of me. why I opened this one I don't remember but I was fervently texting friends in the middle of a certainly unrelated class about it because I've never been normal about Kassandra and Klytemnestra and I'm not going to start now.
tv/movies
Rewatching Severance, slowly.
Rewatching Sort Of, less slowly - this is probably niche to non-Canadian readers but it is a very good show.
Watched The Prince, which was a long time coming, and then wrote a paper about it. Bless.
tbr/nightstand
in the midst of Salvage the Bones, which is of course very good
Helen of Troy: from Homer to Hollywood
I'm gonna be rereading like every play off my Shakespeare class syllabus for the final which I wish I was more excited about

Quote
Actually, upon further consideration, you should probably share every element of your identity. Are you a sexual assault survivor? Are you chronically ill? Mentally ill? Are you disabled? How much do you weigh? Where do you live? Were you bullied as a child? Are you bullied now? Who are your friends? Have they ever made mistakes? Have you ever made a mistake? Did you publicly apologize even though it was a private situation? Did you get good grades in school? How old are you? What’s your day job? Does your employer know that you’re a novelist? Do they know you made mistakes? We deserve to know. All these discussions of your identity must be rough on your mental health. Tough luck, babe, because we need you to stay on social media. You need to be engaging! How else are people going to learn about your book? It certainly won't be through your publicist: You'll be lucky if you're even assigned one. Check your contract! You have to post a certain number of times per day, even though this will, statistically speaking, do very little to sell your book to the general public. Create content! Ignore the books you're supposed to be writing. Tweet instead. Dance for TikTok. Buy a ring light. Make that Instagram profile shine. You're a marketer now! You thought an author's only job is to write books? Oh, honey.

Framing representation as simply as good or bad, with no room for anything in the middle, creates an unintentionally complicated moral dichotomy. It flattens marginalized characters, taking them out of the context of their roles in the unfolding story and transforming them into icons meant to represent entire real, diverse communities.

Leituras da semana (#04 // Fev 12, 2024)
Rebecca Jennings: Everyone's a sellout now [Vox]
No admirável mundo novo em que vivemos, a um artista já não basta criar a obra - tem de criar uma persona digital, e vendê-la (vender-se) nas plataformas digitais do momento. Ou, como a jornalista explica de forma tão clara como tenebrosa: "The internet has made it so that no matter who you are or what you do — from nine-to-five middle managers to astronauts to house cleaners — you cannot escape the tyranny of the personal brand".
Nicole Brinkley: Let's talk about Goodreads [Misshelved]
Cecilia Tan, A Novel Is an Empathy Engine [Uncanny Magazine]

There have been a lot of conversations happening on Twitter and Instagram recently about how harmful social media has become for authors, and YA authors in particular, and it's interesting that I haven't seen those same conversations happening on Tumblr. Maybe because I don't follow so many authors here, as this is largely my place to escape from publishing and all its drama -- it's easier to miss things here, if the specific people you follow aren't sharing it. Or maybe it's because Tumblr chased a lot of its authors away a few years ago, so isn't as directly implicated in the current wave of terribleness. 🤷🏻‍♂️
But it IS terrible. Callouts without context, pile-ons targeting anyone who has ever been associated with an author who is perceived as having done something bad, one-star troll reviews for books that aren't even out yet targeting marginalised authors, continual pressure to Perform Social Justice in a way that's suitable for external consumption (according to standards that are impossible to meet since they change daily), entitled fans harassing and targeting authors for months and then claiming powerlessness when they're called out for it despite the authors repeatedly explaining that it's triggering their PTSD...
(For that last one, see Tess Sharpe's experiences. Those readers claimed to be fans, and yet were so awful to her that she's now said she'll never talk about that book publicly again because it invited too much harassment. She repeatedly explained the impact they were having on her and yet they continued to use the "we're just joking" defence, even when it was extremely clear it wasn't funny to anyone.)
I see this as a big picture thing but I also see this firsthand from those in communities I'm in. I know authors who've decided never to return to certain worlds/series, even though they love it, because people online are so awful about it. I know people who got absolutely reamed out by social media for things they weren't even involved in, just because of their perceived connection to a target, and felt completely unable to defend themselves. Author friends have told me it's okay if I need to publicly disavow them to keep myself safe, which is mad. Every day there are more authors going 'updates only' or leaving Twitter entirely. People are afraid even to talk about how bad the harassment is for fear of making themselves targets -- and literally every newbie YA author that I know is afraid of putting a foot out of line because social media will wreck their career for it.
It sounds dramatic, and for people on the outside, maybe it seems like it's no big deal. But this is targeted, relentless harassment over the course of months or years, and this is affecting people's livelihood and income and opportunities as well as their mental health. Even those of my friends who are least bothered by what others think of them are afraid of making a mistake (or being perceived as making a mistake) that will result in their agent being forced to drop them or risk tainting their own reputation. I've heard people saying they're genuinely afraid to succeed because it'll make them a bigger target. After all, authors are generally alone in dealing with this -- they don't have PR teams or social media managers. If you harass an author online, 99 times out of 100, it's the author who will read it. And it's the author who will respond, and have their statement torn to shreds because nothing is ever good enough, so more and more people just stay silent and submit to whatever the internet wants to inflict on them.
It's messed up. So many of us joined Twitter to find writing communities and now they've become unbearable. My writing chat constantly talks about what we'll do when/if this happens to one of us. And it hits marginalised authors hardest, especially those who don't have supportive offline communities and who rely heavily on social media for friends and connections. It terrifies me, as someone hoping to make a career in writing, to think of putting myself in the line of fire like this, just by virtue of writing YA. I'm very isolated in real life, and rely heavily on social media for community and interaction. If I leave, or all my friends have to leave ... where do I go? What's left for us?
I hope this is just a temporary phase and that the internet becomes kinder again, because the alternative is that writers lose their communities and connections, and all the nice, kind readers lose their interactions with authors entirely. Or else everybody's mental health continues to deteriorate and good people quit writing altogether.
Anyway, if you haven't been following this, check out Nicole Brinkley's essay, "Did Twitter Break YA?" which kickstarted this current conversation, and Adrienne Young's Instagram Stories about this. Because this has been building for a while and authors have been talking about it in group chats for ages but it feels like only recently has anyone really felt like they can talk about it out loud. And this conversation needs to trigger change, because this current situation is hurting people, and it isn't sustainable.

“These days, it’s okay to not be sure what Twitter is for. We can stop going there until we figure it out.“
this essay by Nicole Brinkley is an amazing examination of how Twitter, and social media at large, has altered the YA publishing landscape over the last 15 years. it’s a long read but definitely worth it

@drake-the-incubus the post is getting pretty long and we’re changing topics, so I’ll just say here that whole articles have been written about the negative effects Twitter has had on my industry (see “Did Twitter Break YA?” by Nicole Brinkley for an example). I just opened my pro account and it took 5 seconds of scrolling to find more lit mag drama. Yeah yeah yeah curate your experiences and all that, but there’s only so much you can do that when Twitter forces shit in front of you and authors have been harassed by their supposed “fans” to the point of writing that no one is allowed to their adapt their works into their fucking wills. Obviously fandom is different from pro-publishing, except actually not, because Twitter collapses those boundaries to the point that authors who write original fiction for adults and don’t even interact with minors get accused of “supporting pedophilia.”
And Discord is both too personal and too alienating, especially when you get into big servers, most of which are made by a pre-existing group of friends. I haven’t had any catastrophically bad experiences in discord servers...but I’ve never had any good experiences, either.

I normally don't ask questions like this, and I usually imagine the story characters to look roughly similar to their coordinating movie actors.... But Narcissa's actress is SO off in my head. Is there anyone else you envision Narcissa to look like? I feel like Nicole Kidman or Christie Brinkley might fit the bill, but I'm curious as to your opinion.
I completely agree with you. Helen McCrory was actually cast as Bellatrix, but then had to bow out when she became pregnant. And while I love Helena Bonham Carter, I always felt like she played Bella a little two-dimensional (I read an article where she dismissed needing to read the books...), and I would have been interested to see Helen McCrory’s take on Bella.
It’s a shame that they loved Helen McCrory enough to recast her in a role that didn’t suit her, imo.
I’m in 1000% agreement on Nicole Kidman physically, though I don’t know if she ever would have joined the franchise. I always like Naomi Watts, especially after seeing her in Ophelia recently.

What is an example of a one-sentence pitch?
I mean... what? I can think of a one-sentence pitch for ANYthing.
You could do it long, like so:
“A gardener’s daughter and a shape-shifting fox uncover the lies of their magical world while pursued by monsters in a YA fantasy for fans of HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE and SORCERY OF THORNS” -- Among the Beasts and Briars, Ashley Poston (h/t to Nicole Brinkley for the example)
Or short, like so:
“Anastasia in Space.” -- Heart of Iron by Ashley Poston
“Cinderella at a sci-fi convention” -- Geekerella by Ashley Poston

Hi!! I was curious where it is stated that the book "Heart of Iron" has an ace character in it? Is it brought up in the book or did the author say it on their twitter or something? (I'm a prospective reader)
From the author: I, for the most part, fall somewhere on the asexual spectrum. And I wrote Ana to fall somewhere on there, too.

Putting together an author website can be slightly overwhelming. There are so many other sites to compare yourself to, so many things you don’t want to forget, and how often are you supposed to update it? How do you even design it? What do author websites need? Where do you find the time? And do you really need a blog? (You don’t.)
Whether your website is sleek like Ashley Poston‘s, intricately illustrated like Roshani Chokshi’s, or merely functional like Suzanne Collins‘s, here are five things that that every author needs to have on their author website.
Because apparently my own house is out of order I'm gonna say it here. If you're a writer you need to have a website. Here's what goes on it: Your name Your beautiful face A list of books you done wroted A bio, shorter is better An email contact form Newsletter signup THAT'S IT

1. Contact information
Even the largest, most successful author needs contact information on their website, yet often its buried in hard-to-find places or just not included at all. Contact information—usually in the form of an email address—ensures that booksellers, press, librarians and fans have a way of contacting you.
Authors who feel nervous or unsafe about giving public access to an email address—a particular issue for authors of color who get an exceptional amount of hatemail for just existing—can make a separate email just for authorial duties (either through your website host or a service like Gmail) or they can list the emails of their publicist, literary agent, or author assistant as a buffer.
While many authors use contact forms, and they certainly do cut down on spam, I personally find them difficult to navigate, and its almost impossible to follow up on an email sent through a generic contact form. My preference is just a listed email address, even if its broken up in a way that spambots can’t decipher.
Looking for an example to model your contact page after? Try Zoraida Córdova’s!
2. Links to your social media
If a fan Googles your name, what will be the first two things to come up? Odds are that it’s your website and your Twitter handle. But there’s more social media sites than Twitter, and they’re much more difficult to find via Google, especially if your usernames are all different.
Depending on your layout, social media links can be featured prominently on a landing page, along the sidebar of blog posts, besides a search function if you use a blog, or listed on the about or contact pages. Much like your contact page, they should be easy to find. Angie Thomas’s website is a great example: she features them prominently on the landing page and along the header of every other page.
Remember to use alt-tags to label each site if you choose to hyperlink logos for fans who may have a hard time “reading” images.
3. Newsletter sign-up form
Unlike blogs or social media, newsletters are more guaranteed to be read (as they’re sitting in an email inbox) and fans who sign up for a newsletter are way more likely to buy a book. Authors who don’t have a newsletter should get one – and any author who does needs a prominent way to have fans sign up on their website.
Newsletter sign-ups, much like social media links, can be displayed on your landing page, in a footer, or along a sidebar. My personal favorite method is to include a newsletter sign-up on your landing page and then link to the sign-up page in the menu that’s featured across the site. While more subtle of an approach for those who skin the landing page, it’s statistically more likely to rope you newsletter subscribers that will turn into actual viable sales. (Who knew?)
Susan Dennard implements both a landing page and a pop-up (not my preferred method, but an effective one) to grab newsletter subscribers on her website. Her newsletter doubles as both a writer’s newsletter and her author newsletter, however, so she markets hers a little bit differently; Kate Elliott’s sign-up form is another example that works.
4. Updated information about your book
‘Updated’ is the key word here, especially when it comes to soon-to-release books. Do you have covers? Summaries? Blurbs? Release dates? Order links? Order links to all available places to buy and not just Amazon? A link to the Goodreads page? Links to any important coverage or reviews?
Keeping your book pages updated are vital for author websites, as finding out more about a book is the main reason people go to websites – but so often, especially pre-publication, it can be easy to forget to keep them updated in the whirlwind of other things that need to be done. Immediately updating any new covers, release dates, and ordering information is a must—you don’t want your own site to be behind on the times!—but, unless there’s another major update, try to make sure your information is up to date a) once a month pre-pub and b) once every few months post-pub.
Victoria Schwab’s website includes a book page with information about all her available titles and encourages fans to buy signed copies from her local independent bookstore, so I’m particularly fond of it.
5. A bio—preferably with a press kit
Whether it’s a blogger, a bookstagrammer, a member of the press, or an eager fan, having a press kit on your website guarantees a place where information on you can be found and used on other sites. (Especially if you include it in an easy-to-find location like your “about” page.)
Press kits should include everything on your book page—summaries, order links, blurbs, release dates—and all of your social media links along with an author bio and downloadable high quality images of your cover(s) and author photo. I recommend having the text available in a .doc or .rtf downloadable file rather than a .pdf for ease of the person downloading, along with the images a downloadable .jpgs. You should also include all of your contact information, including your publicist’s email.
Beth Revis has a beautiful press kit on her website that’s easy-to-find on her contact page.
While author websites can certainly include more than what’s mentioned above, those are five musts for any author’s website. Getting that information up and keeping it updated will keep your readers happy—and keep them coming back for more.
