US Open MD SF: Rohan Bopanna/Matthew Ebden [6] def. Pierre-Hugues Herbert/Nicolas Mahut 7-6(3), 6-2 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 Eurosport
Maherbert was initially in control of the match, but a service game hold (with surviving 2 break points) before breaking back opened the path for Bopden to bounce back in the first set. Unfortunately, Mahut’s physical condition also did not help (hope everything is okay, considering the brutal condition), and despite hanging on until the end, Bopden still stood out on returns as well to stay balanced. This was the reason behind Bopden’s 36-14 winners-unforced errors ratio (+12 difference) compared to Maherbert’s 19-16, while Bopden had a 50% break point conversion rate despite both players having 6 opportunities to break.
On the other hand, Maherbert’s second serves vulnerability was often exposed by Bopden throughout the rallies, anticipating a lot more carefully by firing more shots with more pacing as a follow-up. First serves-wise, it faded for Maherbert once the intensity faded, but Bopden did a great job to keep theirs consistent with a 17% difference in their first serves winning percentage, standing out from there once they figured out the rhythm.
In the finals, Bopden will face the winner of another blockbuster clash between the third seeds and defending champion, Rajeev Ram/Joe Salisbury, against the second seeds, Ivan Dodig/Austin Krajicek. While this was written, Ramsbury took the first set 7-5 thanks to Joe’s working return games, but it could also be interesting to see the finals (regardless of the winner of the other encounter), considering its potential massive encounter. In another interesting note, this is Bopanna’s first Men’s Doubles Grand Slam final after, with Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi as the original IndoPak Express in the US Open 2010, they fell short to the Bryan Brothers (Bob & Mike Bryan). Should be a fun one!
