Summary: Struggling to adjust to the sheer normalcy of life on Broke Jaw Ranch after being on the road.
—————————————————————————————————
The adjustment to the Ranch was proving to be far harder for you than you would have expected.
It was a perfectly nice place and there was no reason that it shouldn’t have been the greatest thing that had happened to you since the fall of the world.
Other than the fact that everything about it just seemed off.
You had been looking over your shoulder for so long, constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop, that being in a house again just made you feel like a caged animal.
It was strange how things like that could change in an instant. How something you had once done every day without thought, that made you feel so comfortable, now was nearly enough to make you crawl out of your skin.
It felt wrong.
No matter what you did, you just couldn’t seem to come to terms with the way it felt. You were uncomfortable, finding yourself more and more uneasy as the days went by, instead of settling in like the others.
This was just the way the world was now and you had to get used to that. The trouble was that you just couldn’t be sure if this was the new normal or not.
You couldn’t trust that this was what it was and that it wasn’t going to change at a moment's notice.
After all, this used to be the norm and just as quickly as it had gone away, it was back. It was only natural that you struggled a bit in the interim.
For example, you had just finished your first real shower in years, during which you had scrubbed what felt like a lifetime of dirt and grime from your flesh. It felt raw once you’d finished, but that wasn’t the strangest part.
The strangest part by far was the coconut shampoo you found already waiting for you in the cabin you’d been given, fully stocked with anything you or the Clarks could have ever needed.
It was insane to smell like a tropical oasis after so much time.
It was wrong.
To even think about it was too much for you to comprehend and in some ways, it may have even scared you. It was too normal and too mundane for you to be able to relax, even though every fiber of your being was begging you to.
After all, you were physically and mentally exhausted. It was just that the idea of getting too comfortable here constantly plagued your mind, and that paranoia of no longer being prepared for the outside world was daunting.
Paralyzing.
Still, you did your very best to avoid letting anyone in your group know just how much you were struggling with this.
There was nothing they could do to help, and even if they could, it wasn’t as if you were alone in your distrust. Everyone here was feeling the familiar strangling sensation of normalcy, threatening to choke the life out of you all if you let it.
So, you kept up a brave face and didn’t say anything.
For the most part, it worked well. You did everything you could to keep your mind off of the strange nature of it all, cleaning and recleaning your handgun and keeping a constant eye out for any signs of compromise in the fence.
Anything to keep your wits about you.
Though, no matter what you did, everything seemed to change when the sun went down.
All of that paranoia and fear got worse when you couldn’t rely on the daylight to keep your composure. Even something as simple as a stray beam of light across the wall made you panic, with everything registering as a threat.
It was as if you couldn’t turn those reflexes off, regardless of how hard you tried.
What you didn’t realize was that you weren’t alone in your anxiety and there was another in your group, staring out into the darkness, unable to even consider sleep.
Across the room, right now, Nick was staring up at the same shadows dancing along the ceiling as you were, considering each one carefully.
As if there was some secret held within them that he couldn’t quite make out.
This went on for a while longer before eventually, Nick decided that he’d had enough of trying to sleep in the bunk he’d been given and made his way, as quietly as he could, outside.
Anything would have been better than trying to sleep, knowing he couldn’t have been farther from getting any rest.
At least outside, he could see any threats coming, instead of just waiting for them to catch him when he turned his back.
Nick was quiet.
All things considered, you were sure that no one else knew that he was even awake, but between the creaking of the door on its hinges and the fact he walked heavily on his feet, you couldn’t have hoped to miss it.
Not when you’d been awake for hours.
So, you did the only thing you could think to do. You got up as quietly as you could, your bare feet padding on the wood floors in a cadence all their own.
Past where Madison and Alicia were fast asleep in their own beds until finally, you found yourself on the front porch.
In the short time, it had taken you to catch up to him, Nick was already standing on the porch, a lit cigarette held between his lips as he stared out into the desert beyond the walls.
Obviously, you two were having the same problem.
“Can’t sleep?” you called, only briefly contemplating going back inside to suffer alone before deciding against that. For all you knew, Nick was coming out here to have some alone time and you were just going to be a bother.
…but, considering the very thought of going back in there now filled that pit in your stomach with dread, so you continued on your way, only stopping when you reached the banister.
You figured being with him would be better than being alone, even in the unlikely event he didn’t feel like talking.
“Nope. What about you? You doing okay?” Nick hummed, casually looking over your face, lit up only by the light of the moon, searching for any signs of distress or upset.
It seemed obvious to him that you wouldn't have come out here if you didn’t need or want something, but it also wasn’t like you to just show up out of the blue either, not without a reason.
Not in the middle of the night.
“I don’t know. I guess I’m just not sure about this yet” you shrugged, doing your very best to keep calm. It freaked you out, and you couldn’t help but be upset. Though, you knew you didn’t need to try too hard to put it into words.
You never did with Nick.
No matter what you were feeling, he always understood where you were coming from.
There was silence for a few more moments, as you sat down on the porch steps. The wood was a bit cool when compared to the warmth of your blankets, but it didn’t bother you. Even after the scorching sun had faded away, some of its warmth remained.
“Yeah, I know the feeling” the male agreed, sitting down beside you with a small huff, exhaling the breath of his cigarette into the air around you.
On anyone else, it may have been unwelcome but after all this time, it was a scent you had grown to associate with Nick.
At times like this, you weren’t above admitting that it made you feel a bit safer than you would have without it, like a security blanket.
“What about you? What’s on your mind? You wouldn’t be up if something wasn’t bothering you” you asked, speaking softly to keep from waking anyone else up.
You recognized that look on his face.
It was the look that you’d all worn at one point or another during all of this and even in the dim moonlight, it was clear as day. You couldn’t have missed it even if you tried, because that was what this living nightmare did to people.
It was unavoidable, even for someone like Nick.
“Just like you said, couldn’t sleep, plus I needed a smoke” he shrugged again, not really ready to get into the whole existential crisis thing with you in the middle of the night.
Not that you were ready to just blindly accept that either.
The truth was, it was clear that Nick wasn’t telling you everything, which was odd for him.
The two of you had never really had trouble communicating with one another. If anything, you had a sort of silent understanding that you were on the same page, and you had never needed anything more than that.
…but tonight, you needed more.
Tonight, you needed to know he was here, and that he wasn’t going anywhere. Really, all you wanted to hear was his voice, and it wouldn’t matter what he said.
As long as he was talking.
“Tell me” you prompted, hoping that by some miracle, Nick could somehow drown out the noise in your head, even if for just a moment. “Talk to me”
That was all it took.
For Nick, permission to take up space was all he needed, and as soon as he had it, you found just a bit of the solace you’d been searching for.
“It’s the dark, right? It makes it all worse, feels like the ground could fall out from under you at any second,” he decided, more smoke billowing from between his lips and dissipating somewhere above you both.
You could only nod in reply, not even attempting to come up with some kind of response. That was it.
You already felt out of place here, like a fish out of water, but in the dark, you felt powerless.
“Like you’re all alone in the world, and everything is out to get you the moment you close your eyes” you allowed, recalling the way it made you feel, each and every night the sun fell from the sky.
For people like you and Nick, it had always been there, but now the rest of the world was feeling it too.
It really was over, and it was hard not to feel hopeless about it.
Normally, Nick didn’t know how to put the feelings into words, and he certainly didn’t want you to think he was too weak to handle what his mother seemed to consider a blessing. It was bad enough that she thought he was a burden, he couldn’t take it from you too.
…but, you got it. You had always seen him, for who he was, even when he didn’t know who that was.
This was a good thing.
This place, it was good for you to be here.
Realistically, he knew that, just as you did. Coming to terms with the benefit of living here wasn’t the hard part, it was actually doing it every day.
It was being able to do it without going out of your head.
“So, what are we supposed to do about it?” His words came all at once, a bit rough and just as pointed as always, though they died off softer than they normally would have on his lips.
There had to be something you could do, something that you both could do to make this whole thing a little easier.
Right?
Eventually, you were bound to get used to this and you were sure you would, but in the meantime, you still needed to sleep.
Navigating this world, dead on your feet, would only make everything worse.
“I don’t know. I guess we live…as hard as it is” you decided, taking the cigarette as he offered it now, letting the smoke warm you from the inside out.
It was weak, a bandage at best, but it didn’t matter. It didn’t matter if it was a lie or was far-fetched; it was the best you could do and it would have to do.
For now.
“It’s okay. It doesn’t have to be alright overnight”
There was a finality in Nick’s voice then, something that told you everything you needed to know. Even though he hadn’t actually vocalized every bit of what he was thinking, you didn’t need him to.
You were going to be okay because he thought you would.
“Whatever happens, we’ll deal with it” you agreed, after just a moment to think about what you wanted to say. If nothing else, at least you could believe in that.
Whatever this world threw at you, you knew Nick would be there through it all.
Nick sighed, a small “yeah” leaving his lips as he took another long drag of the cigarette, too lost in thought to give you much more than that. You didn’t mind, letting your head rest on his shoulder, his rhythmic breaths calming you.
In and out, over and over again…never stopping.
Neither of you moved from that place for a while, only shifting when the temperature started dropping below the point of comfort. Both of you were dressed for sleep, not for the early morning chill.
“We should probably head back in” he whispered, bumping you with that same shoulder you’d been resting against, jostling you slightly. “Tomorrow’s another day”
You nodded but didn’t move even then, choosing to instead watch as Nick took what was left of the cig from his lips and dropped it, before standing up and heading toward the door.
It stayed where it landed, the embers burning away for a moment before fading out completely against the dirt.
“You coming?” You didn’t even realize you’d been staring at it until Nick’s voice shook you from the trance, back from where he was standing, waiting for you.
There was another beat between you, but this time, the silence wasn’t born of anything tense or unsure. Now, Nick was just waiting, watching you like the two of you had all the time in the world.
Which, at this moment, you did.
Life was already fragile, to begin with, but now, death was as common as breathing. So, there was no reason to waste a second.
No reason not to admire one another from time to time, and certainly no reason to chase sleep alone, in the dead of night.
“Will you stay with me?”
Your voice was quiet as you spoke, still cautious of the late hour and surrounding families, but it wasn’t timid by any means.
Nick knew you, and you knew him.
You weren’t a couple of school kids with a crush, not Romeo and Juliet on opposite sides of a war.  You were just two people who enjoyed one another’s company, and with the world, as it was, you didn’t see the point in pretending otherwise.
Thankfully, neither did Nick.
He had never been one to ignore his base impulses, and the moment you extended the invitation, he agreed with a nod.
So, as quietly as you could, both you and Nick stepped back into the cabin. Your bunks were all relatively close together, which was nice, but they weren’t exactly made for more than one person.
Not that that was going to stop you. If anything, it meant you had to get a little creative, which was almost second nature by this point.
You grinned to yourself as you figured out the solution to your little problem and yanked the blankets from your bunk onto the floor, following them up with Nick’s own bedding.
It was a little silly, but you didn’t mind and the muffled chuckle from the man at your back told you that he didn’t either.
It was kind of perfect if you were being honest.
Nick snuggled in first, opening his arm to create a space for you at his side, which you took as carefully as you could. This would all be pretty difficult to explain if you woke up Madison right now.
“Comfy?” Nick cooed, his warm breath fanning your face due to the sheer proximity of your two bodies after you’d had a second to get settled.
“Actually, I think am” you decided, once again nuzzling into his side, the pattern of his breath lulling you into peace.
In and out, over and over again.
Never stopping.

Chapter 16.
Summary: Soulmates find each other through what is known as The Pull. A sense within a persons body that their soulmate is within reach that guides them to find them. You find yourself following this Pull, guided by vague dreams of a man you can't quite see, until you collapse in the wild and are found by Troy, your soulmate, who has been following the same feeling toward you for days.
Once connected soulmates are able to share emotions through their bond, as well as being able to sense where the other is. But how this force works is very much a mystery still, it can vary from soulmate to soulmate, and just sometimes a connection too deep can lead twist a bond from something beautiful to, well...

You had paced the bunkhouse for so long that you were surprised you hadn't worn down the wood. Your nails were bitten down on one hand as you pondered over Jake’s revelation that it was not typical for soulmates to share emotions.
What were you supposed to do with this information? More importantly, did Troy already know?
Or was Jake mistaken? Perhaps that was just his own experience but the only way to find out would be to ask more people. And that could arouse suspicion…
You try and take your mind off things by tidying up the bunkhouse, and you’re in the middle of sweeping the dust out the front door when a sudden feeling hits you directly in the chest. It hits you hard enough to make you stagger on your feet for a few seconds.
You pause as panic overcomes you. You reach for your bond, for the pull… you find it empty.
“No!”
You're already out the door and running across the ranch when you see the trucks approaching in the distance. They're driving much faster than they usually would, which could only mean something was very, very wrong.
“Radio for Jake!”
You shout at the guard at the gate. He frowns at you but doesn't hesitate, also seeing the urgency in the way the trucks are driving along the road kicking up dust that floats into the air like smoke. Your eyes scan each of the drivers, looking for Troy as they pull into the gateway but he isn't behind any of the wheels.
Your eyes lock with Cooper as he jumps from the truck. Something is already behind hauled from the back and your heart drops when you see it’s Troy. Limp and pale with blood coating his face and neck.
“Is he bit?”
Are your first words as you chase after them rushing toward the medical tent. You see Cooper shake his head and you sigh with relief.
Jake is there and you don't even remember how or when he arrived. Getting Troy on the bed was a blur. Cooper pulling you out of the way as Jake checks him over was like a dream once Jake goes quiet and intently stares at Troy’s eyes as he flashes a small light in each one.
Your stomach churns. You know enough to realise what Jake is checking for, the responses he needs to know that the blood coating Troy’s head would not prevent him from waking up.
“… too slow…”
Jake mutters.
Your heart stops.
“But he’s responding, right?”
You say shakily. Jake nods but he doesn't look any happier about this than he did before the test.
You can't watch when Jake starts to examine the wound. You feel sick at the sight. You let Cooper lead you outside as he says something about getting air. You're in a daze and all you can do is keep tugging at the bond between you, urging Troy to tug back.
“What the hell happened?”
You say eventually, shaking as you look to Cooper for an explanation.
Cooper doesn't owe you anything, but he gives you a quick summary of events. They came across survivors. They were hostile. They engaged and Troy was injured by one of them who struck him from behind.
You shake your head slowly.
“And the survivors?”
“Took some out. Some escaped.”
Cooper says bluntly.
You clench your fists and your jaw sets when you speak again.
“And the one who hurt Troy?”
Cooper looks away, actually looking a little ashamed.
“… escaped.”
You feel rage. How? Why?
Before you could ask for more information you hear Jeremiah calling for Cooper. You keep your back turned. You don't have the patience for Troy’s father today.
Jeremiah demands an explanation as he leads Cooper back into the tent. You're left alone outside it and your knees buckle. You hit the grass hard and your fingers dig into the dirt.
This can't be it. Troy’s presence in her heart was like a gaping hole. Just empty and filled with cold, yearning darkness. You reach for him again but the lack of connection steals your breath away. That was when Cooper and Jeremiah burst from the tent and start running back toward the gate.
Without a second thought you follow, and neither man seems to care or notice. You can see the militia gathering at the outer edge of the ranch, taking up defensive positions you'd seen Troy scribbling notes about in his book.
You’re at Cooper’s side when you hear the words you already knew.
“They followed us.”
Jeremiah is shouting curses and yelling instructions. You see Mike limping toward the gate. He hadn’t been out with the others, but duty calls. He sees you and frowns.
“Get in the house.”
You scowl at him.
“Don’t tell me what to-”
Mike cuts you off.
“Troy would want you safe. Get in the house!”
You’re about to argue again when Jeremiah pipes up.
“You’ll do as you’re told. We don’t need civilians out here making things more complicated. So unless you’re gonna pick up a weapon missy, get outta the line o’ fire.”
You clench your fists and look to Cooper for support. Unfortunately he just shrugs and looks away with an apologetic look in his eyes.
“Fine!”
You huff. You run back to the main house, the closest shelter to the gate, and take the steps two at a time to Troy’s bedroom. You burst through the door and toward the window where you know you’ll be able to see everything.
Your fingers grip the window frame. You see a car approaching with a pole and a white rag handing from it. You feel a burst of anger.
So these people almost kill Troy and they dare approach his home seeking peace? You can see Jeremiah and Cooper taking the lead, stepping out to meet the vehicle whilst the militia keep their weapons pointed at the people inside.
You squint as you see someone step out, their hands are raised and you can make out a woman with shoulder length blonde hair. You can’t hear what’s being said, but Jeremiah is actually listening… and that makes you furious.
Your eyes are drawn to the opposite side of the car. Another set of raised hands, another figure emerging…
A man. Or a boy, he looks young. Messy hair down to his shoulders and even from here you can see the scowl on his features. Your heart beats hard.
Do something.
It tells you.
These people hurt Troy.
Do something!
Your fingers lose their grip on the window frame and your feet are carrying you back down the steps and outside faster than you can think. Your breathing is hard and your heart pounds. Your feet land on dirt and you run toward the gate.
You’re almost there, you can hear the woman’s voice but you can’t hear her words. But Jeremiah seems to be listening, and that infuriates you.
Do something!
Your heart screams again.
You’re almost at them when your glare switches from the woman to the boy. He is the first to see you, his narrowed eyes slide from the woman to you and they widen with surprise, with recognition. With shock.
It’s like someone has reached into your chest and torn your heart in two. You stop running and it takes all of your strength not to fall to your knees in the dirt.
The boy’s mouth opens. He goes to say something, his hand comes up as if reaching for you but you’re shaking your head and backing away with a hand pressed over your chest.
This… couldn’t be right. Be real. This feeling…
This sudden intense need to close the gap between you both and…
Jeremiah spots you and you hear him shout, but you’re already turning on your heel to flee. Because it couldn’t be right. This feeling in your chest… this… Pull.
Your feet carry you back to the medical tent where you burst through, frightening Jake who is sitting beside Troy, his head in his hands.
“He’s not…?”
You choke out as Jake meets your eyes.
“He woke. Briefly.”
Your legs almost collapse again.
Jake has a small, half-smile on his face. It’s still tinged with sadness and worry, but he doesn’t look like a man about to lose his brother.
“He said your name and lost consciousness again. But I think he’ll be okay, eventually.”
You let out a strangled sob of relief and your legs finally give way. Jake is with you immediately, pulling you up, setting you on the bed beside Troy.
“You’re still not fully recovered. The shock… you need to rest…” Jake is muttering.
You just nod and let him lay you down. You turn your head toward your soulmate and you reach out with your heart. A sense of warmth and happiness spreads through you when you finally find him, he’s there, as if at a distance even though you could reach out and touch him physically. But he is still in your heart.
But then you feel something else. A pulsing throb in your chest that makes you want to get off the bed and run back to the gate to give it some relief, to ease the pressure as it wills you to get off the bed and move.
Jake mistakes your sudden change in pallor and gently rubs your arm, uttering reassuring words that everything will be okay. But he doesn’t know. How could he? Nothing will ever be okay again… not when your heart is suddenly torn in half between two soulmates.

*Nick’s POV*
Y/N and I were at her pace alone. I was staying the night since we were dating for a year now. My mom was happy that I was with someone that wasn’t into drugs. We were on her couch and cuddling. We were watching a movie and the guy was currently fucking his girlfrend who was dead asleep. My eyes widened and I glanced at Y/N who looked almost excited about the scene. I watched for a few more moments and glanced back at her. She was rubbing her thighs together and I looked at her shocked.
“I-Is this turning you on?” I asked and she jumped slightly. She blushed and looked up at me.
“Uh… N-No…” She stuttered, blushing deeper.
“Babe, are you into the idea of someone fucking you while you sleep?” I asked and she turned away from me.
“What? No! That’s crazy!” She laughed, unconvicingly.
“Hey, there’s no reason to be embarrassed.” I said and pulled her into my lap.
“Are you into this?” I asked. She shyly nodded and looked up at me through her lashes.
“So… if you were ever dead asleep, I could play with you? You give me permission?” I asked and she nodded.
“Yes I give you permission.” She smiled and I smiled.
“Do you wanna try tonight?” I asked and her eyes widened slightly, but she nodded. She quickly got up and ran to her room. I looked at her confused, but she came back quickly with two melatonin tabs.
“Aren’t you supposed to just take one?” I asked and she nodded.
“Yeah, but I wanna make sure I’m asleep.” She answered.
“Y/N, I don’t want you to get hurt.” I said worriedly.
“Nicky, I’ll be fine. Trust me.” She said and downed the two tabs. We continued watching the movie, but I couldn’t focus. I was so hard thinking about fucking my girlfriend while she was sleeping. I never even thought about something like this before, but I was into it.
Y/N’s head lulled onto my shoulder after maybe ten minutes. Her eyes slowly closed and I took a deep breath. I lifted her up after I turned off the movie, and took her to her room. I laid her on the bed, she was completely dead weight. I took off her shirt and looked at her full breasts and hardening nipples. I touched her breast and felt myself hardening more. I caught her nipple between my two fingers and stoked my cock. I was very horny. She was uncoscious and oblivious to the world around her. I was suddenly aware that I could do anything. She was in my power. I pulled her shorts off along with her underwear. I reached over to her drawer and pulled out the lube. I squirted a little on the end of my dick. The thought of what I was about to do ecited me more than I thought it would. I spread her legs and ran my hand up her smooth thighs. I brushed against her pussy and she didn’t even move. I slipped one lubricated finger into her and pushed up to find her g-spot. I rubbed the area slightly and she started moving against me. I thought she was waking up, but she wasn’t. She moaned a little and seemed to be dreaming. I could feel that she was getting aroused. I knelt between her legs and brought it to the point where my tip was nudging into her, easily slipping inside. We’ve done this before, but it felt new and exciting. I was taking my time, watching her sleep and be unaware that I was inside her. I was sliding rhythmically in and out of her. At first I was putting most of my weight on my arms above her head, but gradually my weight shifted and I was laying on top of her. She moved under me, but still not waking up. It was almost like she was dreaming of being fucked. I pulled out of her and turned her over. I pulled her hips ip so that she was sort of on her knees. I had to support her and it wasn’t easy, she kept falling to one side. I knelt behind her and pushed my cock into her again. That’s when I had an idea. I grabbed the lube and squirted a good amount onto her puckered up asshole. I pulled my cock from her and put it against her ass. I pushed inside her and her ass stretched to acomidate my size. She started moaning a little in her sleep so I stopped. I pushed a little more, but the tight feeling was too much and I came hard. I pumped into her before pulling out. I settled her in a more comfortable position on her side for sleeping and got off the bed to go wash up. I threw some cold water on my face and just sat in the bathroom thinning about what I just did. I quickly got a wash cloth and did my best to clean Y/N up, then laid down next to her. I pulled her close to me and kissed her head.
“God I love you.” I murmured and fell asleep alongside her.

4,252 Days Chapter 1: Day 1, Pt 1
Previous | Masterlist | Next
Fic Summary: FTWD re-written to include an OC named Gemma who has a platonic relationship/friends with benefits situation with Nick Clark and then goes on to be with Troy Otto. Chapter Summary: Gemma sees a guy run into the road and get hit by a car Word Count: 1177 Author’s Note: This is a big commitment, hopefully I stick with it. I'm excited. Gif from here.
Tumblr media
“Please say you’re calling with good news.” Gemma can feel the pre-emptive disappointment radiating through the phone, almost hotter than the 8AM summer sunshine beating down on her as she walks along the street.
“Hello, Olivia. It’s so good to hear your voice. I’m doing well, thank you. How about you?” Sarcasm and semi-fake niceness hung on every word.
“Stop stalling, we saw each other an hour ago, you know how I am. How did it go? Did they suspect the undercut? Because I told you, Gem, it’s silly but it’s true, they’ll judge you for it.”
“It went great, Liv.” Gemma replied simply, not wanting to keep this going and make her friend more annoyed at her than she knows she already is. “No undercut suspected, zero tattoos spotted. I have to go in for a bit of training tomorrow but after that it’s a long weekend before I start properly on Monday.”
Olivia lets out a sigh of genuine relief through the phone, Gemma can tell she’s smiling as she talks. “That’s great, Gem! Really, that’s so great. I have to get back to work but I'll see you back home later, okay? We can talk about it more then. Maybe plan a way to celebrate a little? Alcohol free, of course.”
“Yeah, sounds good. Talk later.”
Gemma hangs up the phone, puts it in her navy blazer pocket and pulls her hair out of its low ponytail, replacing it with a high one, showing off the undercut Olivia spent 10 minutes stressing about helping her hide this morning. Working in a posh office where she has to hide even the most basic parts of herself isn’t exactly the dream but beggars can’t be choosers. She needs this job. She needs to get back on track.
She can already picture her life a few months from now, a little bit of money in her pocket, new clothes she’s been in need of for weeks, finally able to pay Liv the rent she’s owed. An apartment of her own is the real dream but that might be thinking too big right now and living with Liv definitely isn’t a problem. She can picture it though. Flat screen TV, dark green sofa, huge fluffy rug that feels like you’re walking on a cloud. A bit of saving and hard work at a job she’s pretty sure is going to be mind-numbing and it'll be real before she knows it. There’s a smile on Gemma’s face as she walks down the street thinking of the future. Things might finally be looking up.
-
The loud screech of tyres and the distant thud as something hits the hard road takes Gemma out of her daydream and back to reality. It’s like time freezes for a few seconds as she stops in her tracks, taking in the scene before her.
Black marks on the ground lead up to a small silver car stopped in the middle of the road. Its windshield is smashed and Gemma is pretty sure there’s a small dent on the bumper too. The driver is sitting there, shock on his face, probably not sure if what just happened is his own fault or the fault of the person who just bounced off his windshield and is now laying almost unconscious on the concrete. The other people in the area have stopped too. Some look annoyed that their morning has been disturbed, others look horrified.
There’s a quick rush as time starts again and Gemma runs towards the car and the fallen boy. On closer inspection, he looks rough. No shoes or socks, a half-torn, baggy, white shirt, ill-fitting jeans, hair that seems to not have been brushed in a few days. Gemma peers over her shoulder at a building across the road. She’s been living in the area long enough to know where that boy came running from. It likely wasn't the driver's fault. But it probably wasn’t the boy’s either.
He’s laying on his back, staring up at the sky. Gemma leans over him.
“Hey. Can you hear me? It’s okay. You’re okay,” She says, though she’s not sure that’s true. He looks quickly around him, as much as he can while still laying flat on the floor, and then looks Gemma in the eyes for a second, like he’s checking for something. “Just stay still.”
Looking up, Gemma realises that other than the driver, who took a few seconds to build up the courage to get out of his car and check the damage, she is the only person who has rushed over to help.
“What the hell are they all doing? See a lad get hit by a car and just stand there, seems reasonable, ugh,” she mutters angrily to no one in particular. Looking around quickly, scanning the small crowd, she spots a woman with her phone in her hand and points, “Oi, you, phone someone! Now!”
“No, I’m fine,” the guy mumbles as the woman lifts her phone to call and begins walking over. She hesitates slightly at his comment.
“Ignore him. He’s been hit on the head. Call them.”
He starts trying to sit up, probably faster than he should. Gemma crouches down and reaches out, preparing to attempt to catch him if he starts falling backwards. She makes a mental note to buy some work trousers that she can properly bend in with her first pay cheque. Liv can have these one’s back, if they survive the day.
“I’m fine. I’ll just.. I’ll walk it off, you know. Thanks.” He’s distracted when he says it, not fully in the moment and not looking at Gemma but instead surveying the area once again, searching.
Gemma pretends not to notice. “Walk it off? In whose shoes?” She says it playfully, trying to distract him from whatever this is. He doesn’t seem right. And he can’t just get up and walk this off.
He pauses and takes a look at his grimy, bare feet. “Have you never heard of shoeless hikes? You should try it sometime. It’s great, really.”
Gemma smiles slightly. “Sure it is. Listen, just lay back down, okay? Or at least just stay sitting. You don’t know what could be wrong. The ambulance will be here soon.”
“Nothing is wrong. Uh, I’m Nick, you’re British, it’s.. Tuesday..?” He counts on his fingers. “Well, it’s definitely a weekday. See? Everything..” He starts looking around mid sentence, “...is,” distracted again, more searching, “… fine.”
Gemma follows Nick’s gaze and realises he’s looking at the old abandoned church longer than he’s looking in any other direction. So her assumption was right, that is where he came from.
“I’m Gemma. It’s Wednesday. Stay put.”
Nick turns his head back in her direction. He slumps like he’s lost his fight, exhausted, or has decided whatever he’s worried about doesn’t need worrying about right now. He doesn’t say anything as he lays back down on the floor, giving up his attempts to leave. The shrill sound of an ambulance siren can be heard in the distance.
-
As the ambulance pulls up, accompanied by a police car a dozen feet behind it, the driver of the car finally finds his voice. He’s been standing there for a few minutes, nervously smoothing out his work suit, trying to think of what to say. He speaks fast, trying to get everything out before anyone official gets within hearing distance.
“Listen. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hit you, okay? You seem fine.” He turns to Gemma. “He’ll be fine, right? Nothing needs to come of this. I’ll just... be on my way.”
“Spineless.” Gemma mumbles under her breath before looking back at him. She may not think the incident was necessarily his fault but there’s a way to handle it and it’s not this. Looking directly at him, eyes cold, she continues, “I don’t think you’re going anywhere mate, the police are right there. They’ll want a word, I’m sure. And look at him. Does he look fine?”
Nick is still laying on the floor, not moving much. It's like the adrenaline and shock have finally worn off, leaving him aching all over, able to feel what just happened to him.
Gemma continues. “And unless you fancy running some more people over, I don’t think driving off in that thing is a good idea, do you? You won’t be able to see anything out of that window.”
The man turns back to his car, noting the huge area of smashed windshield, and runs his hand through his already slicked back hair, uncomfortable. Nick ignores what Gemma has just said and looks at the slightly dishevelled man, mumbling a response, “It’s whatever, man. I have bigger things to worry about.”
Gemma looks to Nick, wondering what those bigger things are. You’d assume it was potential head injury or internal damage from being thrown onto the concrete by a hunk of speeding metal but Gemma doesn’t think so. Nick was concerned about something, being hit by a car wasn’t anywhere close to the forefront of his mind.
Before the man can decide what to do the police and paramedics have closed the distance. The police go straight to him, the medics to Nick.
“Okay then, what do we have here?” Says the commanding voice of a tall blonde woman striding over. She’s carrying a large bag of any potential medical supplies Nick may need immediately and is being followed by a man and a stretcher.
“His name is Nick. He ran out into the road and got hit by a car.” Gemma quickly responds.
“Nick, can you tell me how you’re feeling? Let me take a look at you.” The paramedic bends down to Nick. She checks his eyes and makes a ‘hm’ sound.
“I feel fine.” Nick says while she continues looking him over. He doesn’t sound fine. His voice has gotten weaker the longer he’s been laying there.
“Right, okay,” unsurprisingly, the paramedic isn’t convinced. “We should check you out properly anyway. Getting hit by a car can cause a lot of damage you can’t necessarily see. Let’s get you on this stretcher and then we’ll be right on our way to the hospital, okay?” She says it firmly, it’s not really a question. But Nick doesn’t seem to be in a position to argue anyway.
Gemma stands back while the paramedics get Nick up onto the stretcher and as they walk him the short distance to the ambulance she instinctively starts to follow. No one questions her getting into the ambulance with them and taking a seat, not even Nick, who looks over to her but seems to mostly be in his own world now, thinking about who knows what. Maybe he’s thinking about nothing, in too much of a daze. Or maybe, like Gemma, he’s thinking about the church.

Hello lovelies 👋
I'm a big fan of "Fear the Walking Dead," and I was wondering if anyone would want to read it if I wrote anything?
I haven't seen a lot of fics about it, and the ones I have are always romantic towards Alicia, Nick, or Chris
I really want to write a platonic one with like a neighbour reader or something

As you flip through the many channels on the TV, passing news after news, you get startled by the sound of someone’s footsteps growing closer and louder. The remote falls from your grasp and the batteries scatter around the floor, one of them rolls underneath the couch.
“Shit,” you curse through clenched teeth, almost spilling the whiskey over your satin dress.
You glance toward the archway but there’s no one there.

in which luke witnesses your shot at the national championship.
warnings; none that i can think of (may upset some wisconsin fans, sorry if this is too soon)
If you could tell the hockey gods to go to hell at this moment, you would not hesitate.
March 24, 2024. Whittemore Center Arena, University of New Hampshire. The University of Wisconsin vs. The Ohio State University. 2 vs. 1. A little over eight minutes left in the game. The score? 0-0.
Despite outshooting Wisconsin throughout the entire game, you had not scored a single goal. You had had a few close chances, sliding in past Wisconsin’s defensemen a few times, but just couldn’t convert. At this point, you were thanking Raygan for her outstanding performance in goal. But most definitely not the hockey gods.
The voice of Coach Muzerall fluttered through your ears as she told you all to give it everything you got. You were sure Mark Johnson was giving the same speech to his girls at the opposing bench, but honestly, you were too nervous to care. Your eyes wandered around the arena in hopes of finding the only person who could offer any comfort at the moment — Luke.
Unfortunately, Luke had missed the past few games of the NCAA tournament — even your earlier Frozen Four game against Clarkson — because of his schedule with the Preds. Luckily for you, the team was rewarded with a complete off day after their win over Detroit last night. So Luke did the only he could think of. He bought a plane ticket to Durham as soon as he landed in Nashville, and ubered to the arena in order to see you play. You woke up to a text saying that he’d be there, and were beyond excited (and relieved).
As you skated onto the ice in preparation to resume the game, you were able to locate him about halfway up in the stands. He was on his feet, decked up in his scarlet and gray apparel, with a buckeye necklace hanging around his neck. In his hands was a sign that read ‘BUCKEYES > BUCKY’. A small smile crept its way onto your face, wondering where he would have even gotten the materials to make it, but you didn’t care. His support meant everything.
After moving your eyes off of Luke, you focused on Cayla Barnes, who was stationed off to the right of you. She gave you a quick nod, and you knew she meant business. Just as you focused your attention back on the ice, the puck had dropped, with the Badgers winning the draw.
You quickly moved into your own zone, parking yourself in front of the nearest Wisconsin player, which happened to be Britta Curl. The puck passed back and forth between a few of the players before Laila Edwards ended up taking a shot. Raygan managed to kick save it out of your zone as most of your teammates went to make a line change.
They weren’t quick enough, however. Wisconsin had managed to quickly pass the puck out of their zone to center ice, where Curl was waiting patiently with her stick. The puck fell into line perfectly as she entered your zone. You rushed back as fast as you could as you saw Raygan prepare for a wrist shot, and somehow managed to poke the puck away as you tangled up with her. This time, the puck landed right on Cayla’s stick.
Cayla quickly rushed up ice as you let out a small breath. You followed suit, backing her up in case a Wisconsin player managed to steal the puck back. It didn’t take long, however, for Cayla to find Hannah Bilka at center ice, with Joy Dunne on her tail.
You held your breath as the puck landed on Joy Dunne’s stick. If there was one person who wasn’t going to fail you, it was her. She was your team’s leading point scorer with 38 points on the year (23 of which were goals), the WCHA Rookie of the Year, and the NCAA Rookie of the Year. Almost immediately, she sent the puck flying right past McNaughton’s glove and into the goal.
Cheers erupted from the ice, bench, and stands as you were swallowed up into a team huddle by the glass. Joy excitedly made an “O-H” with her hands before embracing you all and making her way to the bench. You smiled softly and looked up at the clock — 7:13 left in the third. You skated off the ice and Stephanie Markowski took your place by center ice.
Locating Luke again, a bright smile was plastered wide across his face as he watched the replay. He had met Joy, who you embraced as a little sister, when he had come to campus to visit you earlier during the all star break. Needless to say, he was proud of her, as anyone should be. What you didn’t know, however, is just how proud he was of you. Your defensive poke-check set the scoring play into motion and here you were just over seven minutes away from winning the national championship.
Time couldn’t have passed more slowly for you as the clock wound down. Wisconsin had created many more scoring opportunities, but just couldn’t convert (you had to thank Raygan once again). You were back on the ice with two minutes to go, scrambling back into the defensive zone as the Badgers pulled McNaughton in order to gain an extra attacker. Your heart raced as you saw Casey O’Brien rush onto the ice, skating swiftly towards your goal.
You knew nothing good was going to happen if you couldn’t calm down. So, as the puck was passed to Ava Murphy, you took a deep breath and raced in front of her as she wound up for a slap shot. As she let go of the puck, you dove in front of it, the puck redirecting off of your ankle and into neutral territory.
Man, did that hurt like a motherfucker. The crowd simultaneously grimaced and cheered for you as you recollected yourself off of the ice. You swear you could hear Luke’s voice yelling your name out of the entire crowd, telling you to get up and kick ass.
The puck was quickly regathered by Caroline Harvey as she circled through neutral ice, waiting for her teammates to reenter the zone. Once completed, the puck was passed to Lacey Eden as Emma Peschel tried to poke it away, but in vain. Caroline passed it to Charla Edwards, who lined up to take a shot from the blue line. None of your teammates were guarding her, so you did what you had to do. You once again skated up and prepared your body to be hit with a hard piece of vulcanized rubber. When it did, you fell to the ground, but got right back up as cheers erupted once again.
“Let’s go, Y/N!” Quinn Kuntz yelled from the bench, and you struggled to skate, but the puck had bounced right back to Edwards. Instead of trying to move around you, she wound up for another slap shot, but that one didn’t get past you either. The puck once again hit your body as you blocked the shot, falling to the ice once again. Finally, Emma was able to clear the zone as the puck raced towards the other end of the ice.
At that moment, you used your stick to propel you towards the bench. You knew you weren’t seriously injured — you’d just have a few bad bruises here and there — but your body hurt like a bitch from taking all of those shots. You were greeted with pats on the back from all your teammates on the bench as Hannah jumped back on in your place. You smiled softly as a response, focusing on the jumbotron to see the time left in the game.
One minute. If you could hold off Wisconsin for one minute, you would be a national champion. You watched anxiously as your teammates tried to clear the zone towards the now empty net of Wisconsin, but to no avail. Finally, Joy had managed to send it down the length of the ice, which forced a quick line change. You hopped on the ice with around 30 seconds left and made your way into the defensive zone yet again.
Since McNaughton was pulled, the Badgers had an extra attacker, which made it harder to defend your goal than usual. You weren’t going to give up that easily, however. The puck was passed back in forth between the six Badgers on the ice, each one of them waiting for the perfect shot. The clock wound down as the puck finally landed on Sophie Hegleson’s stick.
Everything seemed to move in slow motion. You could hear nothing as you once again forced yourself to skate in front of her, knowing that this goal would change the trajectory of the game. Your teammates were counting on you, so you were going to give it your all. You braced yourself for impact as the puck hit your back, your body sacrificing itself for the win exactly as the buzzer went off.
The game was over. You were officially a national champion. The sounds of your teammates yelling filled your ears as you let your body collapse to the ice, both in pain and in shock. You took your helmet off to gather yourself as a small smile made its way across your face. You had done it.
Emma skated over to you and pulled you up off of the ice, and you both rushed over to join the dog pile of your teammates on top of Raygan. Although you couldn’t see him, Luke was smiling down at you, a look of immense pride present on his face. He fumbled with the buckeye necklace hanging around his neck as he couldn’t contain his excitement, knowing that you were a national champion.
After you all had settled down and received your medals (but not before shaking hands and congratulating Wisconsin on their tremendous effort), you were allowed to bring family members and friends onto the ice to take pictures. As Luke made his way onto the ice, you excitedly skated over to him, and his arms were wide open to catch you. You smiled widely, your eyes shining brightly, “I did it, Luke. I really did it.”
He cupped your face with his hands, nodding his head in agreement, “You did it, my love. I’m so fucking proud of you.”
You smiled brightly up at him again, your eyes swelling with tears. Luke pulled you into another hug, gently kissing the top of your head, “Go celebrate with your teammates. I’ll be right here waiting for you when you’re done.” He reassured, giving you a soft smile as he wiped away some stray tears that had fallen with the pads of his thumbs. You nodded, skating over and joining Joy. When you were finally given the trophy after she did, you hoisted it high up into the air, ready to show it off to the entire world.
After all, it’s always been Ohio against the world.

The Cinderella Moment
Pairing: reader x (you choose)
Summary: You are a broke college student who works for a very stuck up, arrogant and rude rich family. They give you food and shelter and so you always accept their impossible orders with a nod. But their order to go to a ball, disguised as their daughter might just flip your world upside down.
Tumblr media
Warnings: Riches being shitty, reader's broke, verbal abuse.
A/n: This is an experiment and I dunno how it's gonna turn out, but if you like it then please do reblog.
"8 weeks? Can't it heal faster? The ball is just around the corner." The shrill voice of madam Abigail pierced your ears as you discreetly rubbed them.
The doctor who was sitting at the injured Rose's side shook his head and said. "No, Mrs. Thompson. It takes 6 to 8 weeks for a broken arm to fully heal."
Madam Abigail fall down on one of the chairs dramatically and you rolled your eyes as you took in the scene from a secluded corner of the room.
You were a college student. Well, a broke college student to be exact. You did get into a prestigious college on scholarship but the other bills were crippling down on you. You didn't want to burden your parents as your financial background was not favorable. After working in cafes and fast food chains, living in crappy apartments and skipping breakfast everyday. When you saw the job posting for a house keeper with housing and food, you jumped on it like a cat jumping on a ball.
You were finally able to move out of your shitty apartment with not so nice company into a decent maid's room and the food was also better than the leftovers at your previous jobs.
However, not everything was rainbows and sunshines. Your employer was horrible, condescending, rude and overall the epitome of rich, stuck-up assholes. You now worked almost 24/7, having to be present on a whim and maintaining everything into perfection.
It was like retail job, just no off time with Karens screaming at you all the time. But you didn't give a fuck. Every insult hurled at you would fall on deaf ears because you learnt long time ago that detachment really annoyed people with superiority complex.
Mr. Thompson was rarely home so it was only Abigail and her ducklings following her around. The only person who was nice to you was laying on the bed with a broken arm. The only one eligible for the grand ball.
Oh, the grand ball? It was a masquerade party, the most hyped upcoming event, organized by one of the richest man in the country, so he could find someone to settle down with. People called him prince because he was the youngest in the bunch of old billionaires.
Of course it was nothing but arranged marriage and someone actually meeting the prince and catching his eyes would be like finding a needle in a haystack. But there would be many other wealthy suitors than just him. So, needless to say, the ball was a gold mine for potential catches.
Abigail and many of her tea time friends were so furious that only girls above 18 were allowed. They would send their nine year old if it meant snatching a good deal.
And so seeing the only candidate from their family injured and unattractive. Abigail was devasted to say the least.
"Is there really no way for a speedy recovery? Can she not wear her cast on the night of the ball? It's really important." She Shrieked.
The doctor was agitated but contained it well and answered in a balanced voice. "Unfortunately, no. We cannot dictate when the recovery would happen and she needs to wear the cast all the time for the arm to heal properly and effectively. You should take care of your daughter."
Abigail scoffed at that and sobbed into her handkerchief, not even sparing Rose a glance. She was visibly upset by it but probably did not want any drama as she whispered out. "Mom, it's going to be alright. It okay."
Abigail's head snapped towards Rose as she scowled at her daughter. "How is it going to be alright? You're going to miss such a great opportunity. And you're so stupid. How did you fall from the stairs? Do you not have eyes? I'm so unfortunate to have an useless child like you..." Abigail continued to berate her daughter and you sneakily went to the doctor to escort him out as the scene was about to turn ugly and he didn't sign up for a reality TV show.
The doctor thanked you and handed you a prescription. You nodded and went back. Sure enough, they were both shouting at each other now. Rose tried to shot back but since she was injured, she lacked her usual ferocity as Abigail managed to dominated her.
You shook your head in exasperation and opened your mouth to interrupt. You might get into trouble for this but you couldn't watch Abigail scold a sick and fragile Rose, when she did nothing to deserve it.
"Madam, I think you should let miss Rose rest and it might help with a quicker recovery." You said and braced yourself to get chewed out.
Abigail spun on her heels, her whale-like face flushed with rage as she pointed a harsh finger at you and started. "You don't need to meddle-" She cut herself off as a look of awe dawned on her face, like she had an epiphany.
She rushed towards you. Grabbing you by the arm and dragged you beside Rose. What is this woman doing? You didn't want to get yelled at so you remained there with a bewildered frown as Abigail's assessing gaze flicked between you and Rose, her smile widening with each gaze.
After the tenth gaze, Abigail clapped her hands in glee and exclaimed. "Perfect. You are perfect." And stared at you.
"I'm perfect for what?" You asked with a raised eyebrow.
"You are perfect to go to the ball as Rose. Just look at you two both, look like pretty twins." Abigail gushed, her eyes twinkling with hope.
You gawked at her, applaud. "Are you shitting me?"
Abigail snapped her eyes at you and barked. "Mind your language, servant."
You put up your hand. "Ma'am, I won't. I have done everything you asked me to do. From cleaning the deepest corner of the mansion by myself to entertaining pervy men. I have done everything, but I won't do this. I won't go in place of Rose. I don't want to deceit anyone." You ranted.
This woman had asked you to do so many egregious things and you did them without any complaint. However, this is where you draw the line. It was alright when you were the only one taking the brunt of her deviousness but if she wants you to deceive other people, you wouldn't do it.
Considering you had just been lied to yourself. The man who claimed to love you, got engaged with someone else without a peep of protest. You were just his play thing.
Abigail looked like she wanted to slap you as her face flushed red and her eyes twitched. "You ungrateful, brat. I gave you a roof, food, safety and that's how you repay me? By counting all the bare minimum you have done? I thought that maybe you had some sense of integrity but I should have known better," She scoffed wryly and looked you dead in the eye. "Tell me, how much you want me to pay you to go to this ball?"
To all the insults you have been subjected to, this genuinely offended you. "Ma'am, you could sell your morals for money but I can't. Even if you give me a billion dollar I won't go. I don't want to trick someone into believing I'm somebody else. This is my boundary I won't cross."
Abigail sneered. "Just drop your act already-"
"Mom, let me talk to her." Rose interjected and you flashed her a determined look. You weren't going to budge on this one.
"What would you talk to her? You are just as dumb as her." Abigail yelled.
"If I didn't convince her then you can call me as many insults as you'd like. Now please, get out." She responded, softy but firmly.
Abigail huffed and whined but left the room nonetheless, the door clicking shut but you knew she was right outside the door, listening to everything and so did Rose as she beckoned you to the bed. You sighed and sat down beside her.
"Listen, you should go. Have fun, eat expensive food and rob my mother of as much money as you need to get out of here. And before you start about deceit and all that. You don't need to meet anyone, just imagine what are your chances of meeting the prince and catching his eye? Maybe one percent. Every women would be busy fawning over him, you won't even get an opportunity." Rose explained in a hushed voice.
When she put it like that it didn't sound bad but you were still apprehensive. "But I have already said no to the money, if I demand it now then she would be proven correct and what about the other suitors?" You countered.
"Who cares what my mother thinks of you? She already thinks you are inferior and nothing would change that, then why not use the opportunity and get out of her claws? And as for the other suitors, as I said you don't need to meet anyone there. My mother won't be there to make sure you are putting in the efforts or not." She argued.
"You sure you are Abigail's bio daughter? You doesn't seem to like her much." You half joked, half lamented. Now the idea of going to the ball wasn't looking bad or deceitful. Just a solace night in a pretty dress.
Rose let out a bitter laugh. "Unfortunately, I'm. And I don't like the way you are treated but that's the only thing I can do. Plus, the event may cheer you up, since you're going through a lot right now..." She trailed off, probably not wanting to open your fresh wound.
You hummed quietly and let the room get silent. After some hesitation, you whispered. "You did it intentionally." It wasn't a question, it was a statement. Rose was far from being clumsy or reckless so for her to fall from the stairs she could navigate blindly. It was rather suspicious.
"I let my love go once y/n. I can't let it go again." She whispered back.
You gulped due to the tension. "So, shall I call your mother?" You asked to lighten the mood and it worked as Rose beamed at you and nodded her head.
"So, you'd go?" She asked hopefully.
"Yes, I'd go." You said with a grin, image be damned Rose was right. Scam Abigail and get the fuck out of there.
You opened the door and a very annoyed and impatient Abigail stomped inside. She glowered at you expectantly and you cleared your throat.
"After Rose's arguments, I have decided to go to the ball. If you give me my desired price." You said monotonously.
A look of smugness crossed her face as she scoffed and said. "I knew it. So much for morals. Now spit your price."
And so you did.
You asked for an amount that would keep you afloat for a year. You had initially asked for 4 years worth of money, yes greedy. But you knew it would not make a dent in their bank balance and you really wanted to get back for all the obnoxious and unreasonable things she had made you do it.
However, Abigail wasn't pleased with this offer as she shouted that she would only give you that amount if you managed to woo the prince. You had no plans for doing that so you let go of that notion.
It gave you the much needed vacation from your work but the practice that came afterwards almost made you take back your offer and go back to scrubbing the floors.
The process to become Rose was strenuous. From how you walked to how you talked, everything needed to be exactly like Rose. Cursing was thrown out the window. You had to walk slowly with small steps with a sway of your hips, no long strides were allowed. Heck, you couldn't even slouch. Although you didn't receive a scathing hit by wooden stick, Abigail's earbiting voice and insults were not any pleasant either.
You had to speak like you were talking to crickets, poised and low. Cracking Rose's accent and voice was the toughest task but you pulled it off. Everything was so meticulous, from clothing to manners to behavior. These effluent women had to be perfect, not human. But it was all useless as you wouldn't be behaving like the perfect little doll at the ball. Maybe it would help you further down the line to snatch a rich man if you turned out to be a failure.
Rose also got some relief from her banshee of a mother as she mostly helped you and took care of herself, her mother didn't give two fucks about her daughter's health.
That was how the days passed and here you were now, sitting ahead of Rose's vanity as Abigail dolled you up for the ball. She didn't hire any stylist or artist as it could risk her scheme getting out, no matter how much she paid them.
"You must secure a man for my daughter or you will not be getting any money." Abigail hissed as she zipped up your dress.
"That is not the terms we agreed on. You are paying me to go to the ball as Rose, not to woo a man. I'll try to do my best but you can't hold back my payment." You bit back. You weren't an idiot, you had made her sign a contract and this bit wasn't in it.
Abigail scowled at you and muttered under her breath. "Little wicked tramp." And stepped back as you were ready.
You rolled your eyes, the comment sliding off of your consciousness like butter as you glanced up to assess your reflection.
And you were awestruck to say the least.
Your makeup was minimal as it would get overshadowed by the dim lights and mask anyways. However, it brought out your features to the fullest, making you look like a princess.
The dress was even more mesmerizing. It was a dusty blue fluffy gown with a heart neckline and white embroidery shattered throughout. It flowed like ichor on your body, making you look ethereal.
Tumblr media
You hummed in admiration and grabbed the same coloured mask from the vanity, you tied it behind your head as Rose came near you.
"You look so beautiful, even with the mask. I think you would have a hard time dodging men." She teased.
You swatted her forearm and whirled around to glare at her. "Don't say stuff like that, Rose. I'm already a nervous wreck inside." You whined. It was true, going or doing something for the first time always felt daunting but this time you felt like an intruder as you didn't belong in that party at all. Thankfully, the anonymity of the mask was a sigh of relief to you.
Rose chuckled and bobbed your nose. "No, I'm serious. You look really pretty-"
She was cut off by a yell from Abigail. "Come on, you'll be late. Do you want people to think that we are late arrivers?"
You sighed deeply as Rose shook her head. "Okay, have fun and stay away from boys. Bye." She said and hugged you.
You hugged her back and said hastily. "Okay, bye." And jogged out of the room and into the car as Abigail's insults played in the background.
👑👠💃
"Miss, we have arrived." The unassuming driver said and pulled open the car door.
The respect was peculiar as you gingerly stepped outside. Your dusty blue pumps stark against the grey pavement. Abigail wanted you to wear heels but you'd be damned if you risked blisters or a twisted ankle on your precious feet.
You smoothed down your dress and started walking forward, your breath catching in your throat upon gazing at the banquet. The venue appeared heavenly, with white gates and staircase like golden glass, leading to the paradise of the elite. It was bustling with people who had enough money to buy your soul. All hidden behind their customized mask and clothes, some were extravagant, some were elegant.
Their expensive scent mingled in the air, creating a tantalizing and mystical aura. It was amplified by the dim lights of the hall, leaving the mind tranquil and intrigued for the suitors behind the veils.
Although the low light made it hard to decipher the interior of the hall. It definitely was of Victorian style as it was opulent and eloquent at the same time.
You looked around like a curious child as you observed and admired the beauty, upper class deemed normal.
You rushed to the food first, eating every of those stupidly expensive yet tasty dishes from all around the world. They were a lot so you ate small portions but your favorite had to be the chocolate fountain where you may or may not have coated your fingers with chocolate and licked them clean. No, classy ladies like you didn't do such things.
You tried to talk to some other girls as well but they were more interested in finding their future husbands. Hence, all your conversations died shortly after some begrudging small talk.
Those also attracted unwanted male attention so you quickly noped out of there and began exploring the venue however it was way bigger than you expected. Though mostly consisting of bedrooms and suites, you had squealed in surprise when you had found a small library tucked away in the lounge. You wanted to read there so badly, but you had come here to mess around not hide in a corner and read Jane Austen like your usual self.
However your enthusiasm had mellowed down as you now stared out the large bay window, in a secluded corner, chewing on fruits and silently observing the party.
"How come there's no fountain in the garden?" You mused to yourself. You had even gone to the garden and found no fountain and now gazing at it again reminded you of that smidge of flaw again.
"Because it's in the balcony." A deep voice said from behind.
You gasped, one hand flying to your racing heart as the other clutched onto the fruit plate for dear life, your body slightly trembling from the unexpected adrenaline surging to your veins.
You whipped your head to look at the perpetrator as he gave you a sheepish and apologetic look. You couldn't clearly make out his face but the golden light coming from the oil lamp above you and the white moonlight casted an unique glow on his porcelain face, his stark blue eyes twinkling in the lights.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. You looked lonely so I thought to give you some company." He said, his black suit and mask made him blend into the surroundings like the devil lurking in the shadows, patiently waiting for an opportunity.
"So, you were stalking me?" You said sharply before you could even comprehend your words. You instantly regretted it as dread filled your stomach. Fuck, he wasn't some random man you could sass around. He was definitely a very powerful man, he dripped from it.
He chuckled, the sound soothing to your ears. "I was not stalking. I was... Observing." He said playfully.
You relaxed at his nonchalance and smirked at him. "So, you were definitely stalking." You teased back.
"Oh, come on. I'm trying to be romantic here. Plus, a little birdie like you, standing alone in a corner while everybody danced? You'd definitely stick out like a sore thumb." He said.
You snapped your gaze back to the main area and sure enough, everyone was twirling on the melody flowing in the air, while you stares out a window like a werido.
"I didn't know people were dancing." You whispered, more to yourself but he heard it.
"Since we are the only loners left, might you enjoy some company?" He suggested with a charming smirk and extended his hand for you, his sapphire blue eyes flickering towards the dance floor.
Rejection must be as clear as day on your face as he retrieved his hand with a pout and walked closer to you. You stepped backwards, your back hitting the window.
"Just one dance with you, pretty please?" He pleaded and gently brought his hand over his heart like it would get wounded by your denial.
It was so coy that it made you chuckle. "Hmmm, I'll dance with you but only on one condition. You'll have to show me the balcony." You offered and he nodded ecstatically.
He stretched out his hand once again and this time you took it. Your skirt twirled as he held your waist and whisked you to the dance floor. No one noticed your presence, too engrossed in their own world. However, you did.
You took notice how in the light of the chandelier, his face was more visible, how sharp his jaw was. You noticed how his muscular arms felt beneath your hands as you clutched onto them. How his body enveloped yours, a cocoon you never wanted to leave.
"You are so beautiful. " He murmured, close to your face. His gaze piercing as his voice sent shivers down your spine.
"But not as Beautiful as you. " You whispered and huffed out a breathy chuckle. You wanted to see him without his mask.
He beamed at you but swiftly grabbed your hand that was gliding behind his head, near his mask string. "Don't do that, darling." He husked out, bringing your hand to his lips, he kissed your palm. Heat rose to your cheeks as you looked away, making him chuckle. He was devilishly charming.
"Your palms are not, soft. Why?" He asked inquisitively. He was observant for sure or had kissed many women's palms.
"I-uh, like to do some manual labour. Some for fun, some for skills." You stuttered out, hoping it wouldn't blow your cover.
"That's nice. But I totally forgot to ask, what's your name?" He asked softly.
"What's your name?" You countered, anxiety brewing inside you.
He shook his head with a chuckle. "What's in the name?" And winked at you.
"Exactly." You gasped when he spun you around, your back hitting his muscular chest.
"So, what are you looking for?" He asked in your ear.
It took you a moment to process his question. "Fun." You replied.
"No, in terms of love. Don't you wanna love someone?"
You didn't like where this conversation was heading as you turned in his arms and wrapped your hands around his neck. 'Don't you?"
"I don't have time for love?" He said honestly.
"It's overrated anyways."
He let out a throaty laugh. "No, it's not overrated," He said and pulled you closer, his earthy scent hypnotizing you. "It's painfully sweet."
"Mhm, you're really poetic." You teased.
"So, you want to see the fountain?" He asked with a smirk.
"Yes, why not?" You instantly replied.
He chuckled and twirled you around, leading to the staircase parallel to the entrance. He led you up and gradually the lighting intensified as as you both left the main floor and entered into a stairway. It was illuminated by enormous chandeliers with wide bronze steps and Victorian style walls. You both stopped ahead of a golden door and he pushed it open.
Suddenly, the glow surrounding you changed as the ceiling was now replaced by the starry sky. You glanced at him as he smiled at you sweetly.
"You wanted to see the fountain and I'm a man of my word, darling." He said, intertwining your hand with his he guided you through the hallway, the balcony coming into your sight as you came to a halt.
You were stunned as you walked deeper into the balcony. The fountain was set in the middle of it, made with white marbles and on top was a skillfully crafted statue of cupid as water sprinkle down from his arrow. The water glinted in the moonlight as you rushed towards it and sat on the edge of the fountain. Looking to your side, the entire garden was in front of your eyes. The balcony was large, but deserted, no one was there beside you and him. You also weren't able to find it when you traversed the venue. It felt like a secret.
You glanced at him as he gazed at you with affection. "How do you know about this? It feels like something only the prince would know." Since it was one of many hotels the prince's family owned for generations.
"Because I'm the prince." He said and your heart stopped. No, that can't be. But to your absolute horror, he removed his mask and yes, it was him as he walked towards you. He sat beside you and covered your hands with his but you were frozen in place. The shock had paralyzed your body, mind and soul.
"I like you, I hosted a masquerade party to let people be themselves behind their mask. And you're the most authentic girl I've met this night. Your shyness didn't feel forced and your boldness wasn't fake. It's like you had no qualms for impressing anyone and that's what I wanted. You're witty, you seem hard working, you're beautiful. I know it's just one interaction but you are everything I was looking for and I promise to put effort into our relationship. So, will you marry me?"
His last words pounded in your ears. No, you couldn't do this. You couldn't trick someone but you couldn't refuse him either. What if he became angry and came after you? What if he came after Rose? You should have never danced with him.
"I-I need to go." You stumbled away from him, your hands trembling over the railing. You needed to get out of there, fast.
"But why?" He asked, bewildered and stood up.
The balcony was big enough that you could rush past him and he wouldn't be able to catch you. Hopefully, his size wouldn't ruin your escape plan. You took a deep breath and braced yourself for a run. "Because my mother told me to come before midnight and I think I'm already late. I should be get going. Thank you for the good time." You blabbered and marched past him and into the hallway.
"No, wait." He shouted and the thumping of his shoes reverberated in the hallway.
You gulped as you ran along the hallway. You breathed a sigh of relief when the golden door emerged ahead of you. You shoved it open and sprinted down the wide and umber colored stairs. The unusually well-lit staircase helped you skid down faster as your dress bellowed behind you.
However, he wasn't far away as his yells for you to stop made you heave in panic and he felt much closer than he actually was.
Thankfully, the lights reduced as you entered the main hall. You quickly darted into the crowd, making him loose you.
"Excuse me."
"please, let me go."
"I'm sorry, can you step aside?"
You said hundreds of times as you weaved through the crowd, checking your surroundings for him once in a while.
Soon, the crowd cleared out as the entrance door appeared in front of you. You dashed out the door and climbed down the golden steps. Your pace had slowed down, assuming you were out of danger when:
"Close the gates." His thunderous command boomed in your ears, making your blood ran cold.
Your eyes widened in fear as the guards began shutting the gates. You regained your ferocity and even pushed your body's limits as you scurried towards the exit, heart in your throat as the gates came inward by each passing second.
You yelped as you slide outside from a small spacing left before the gates fully closed. You stumbled forward as the gates thudded shut behind you just after a moment you got out.
You pulled open the car door and fall inside it. Your body shaking due to adrenaline as the driver wordlessly started the car and you sighed in relief.
However, just before the car sped off, you caught a glimpse of him staring at the recouping car.
He saw the car. He knows the name. He would come for Rose, thinking it was you. The exact thing you didn't want to happen. SHIT.

Changing Minds - Part 1
Tumblr media
Summary: Your long time work acquaintance Nick Fowler offers to take you to a fancy fundraiser as a way of cheering you up. He insists it's only as friends but when he sees you falling into the grasp of someone he knows is no good, he might change his mind on that.
Word Count: ~1200
Warnings: Implied violence and attempted murder. Please let me know if I missed any.
A/N: Reader is an older female (late 30's +). This is part of the Garbage Men AU. I'm not yet sure if this will be a full series or just a two part story.

Tumblr media
Nick pulled up to the City Clerk’s offices. He had all the off times memorized so he could always get a good parking spot. He had some clues to follow up on with McMann.
He also had your work schedule memorized so he knew he'd get the right help. He once made the mistake of thinking someone else could help him while you were on vacation. Never again. Thankfully your quiet demeanor didn't seem to extend to him and you would let him know when you'd be out, barring a sick day here or there.
He’d asked you before about why you worked so many hours. “You have seniority here. Have some of the younger people work the overtime.”
“They’re just kids,” you chide him. “Let them enjoy life a little. If they want the overtime, they get it but I’m happy to see them actually having lives. If I can help keep the world from breaking them so quickly I’ll happily do it.”
Nick smiled at the memory of your conversation. The smile dropped when he walked up to your desk and noticed your red, puffy eyes; your trash bin filled with tissues. “What happened,” he asked.
“Oh,” you sniffle, “it’s just some allergies is all.”
“You’ve never had allergies before. What happened?”
“It doesn’t matter, Nick,” you objected. “Now, how can I help you?”
“You can help me by telling me what happened.”
You tried to stare him down but knew from experience it would be a losing battle. When Nick wanted answers, he got them somehow or another. You sag your shoulders and tell him, “you remember I was visiting family recently?” He nods. “I…my ex-boyfriend…hooked up with my sister. They got married last month and no one told me. It was a big wedding, too.”
Nick nods in sympathy, “no notice or anything. Doesn’t sound like good family to me.”
You agree, “and I know it shouldn’t bother me. He is an ex-boyfriend after all. But…it still hurts. My sister said they didn’t tell me because they didn’t want me to ruin their special day by being upset.” You laugh harshly, “I guess I’m just proving their point.”
“No,” Nick demurred. “They are in the wrong here. Someone should have at least told you they were together. I’m sorry they hurt you.”
You sniffle, “thanks Nick. It’s nice to have someone on my side.” You smile up at him and he smiles back. “Anyways, what are you here for? How can I help you?”
The two of you easily step into your usual work rhythm. You spend a couple hours finding all the documents Nick is looking for, getting them scanned, and everything else he needs. The work is intermingled with the occasional joke or story. You and Nick have gotten along well ever since he learned you could help him with the most detailed of requests. Where others would give him a binder to sort through, you seemed to always know where in the binder the exact information was. Nick appreciated that kind of skill.
As he’s wrapping to go he takes another glance at the tissues in your trash bin, a reminder of your tears and hurt. He turns to you and asks, “have you heard the phrase “the best revenge is living well”? It’s not the exact line, but you get the sentiment.” You shake your head no and he continues, “I know you don’t like hurting people but I don’t think you should wallow in your pain. Your best option to get revenge on your family for excluding you is to, well, live well. Show them they didn’t hurt you as much as they think.”
“That’s a nice idea, Nick, but my life is so dull I don’t know that I can.”
“Well,” he hesitates, “I’ve got a charity event coming up. It’s nothing too fancy, not a black-tie thing. But I could use a plus one.” Your eyebrows raise in surprise. “It’s not a date,” he quickly assures. “I just get tired of inane conversation and could use a friend to help me out.”
“Why go at all if you don’t enjoy it?”
“Work requirement. My bosses want me to schmooze a few people. Having you with me might actually be helpful. If you’re up for it.” You consider his words and he goes on, thinking to sweeten the deal, “the drinks are free, you can dress up, and maybe you’ll meet someone who’ll help you completely forget about that ex of yours.”
You smile, “you know what, Nick? That sounds absolutely lovely.”
Tumblr media
The day of the event you get the notification from Nick telling you he’s outside your building. When you step outside he immediately spots you and his eyebrows raise.
“Is..is something wrong with my dress,” you ask.
“Not a thing,” he whispers. “I just…I never would’ve figured you to have something so…high class.”
“Oh, yeah,” you smile, heat hitting your cheeks. “I honestly was never expecting to have an opportunity to wear it. But sometimes you just need to treat yourself. I’d sometimes put the dress on and walk around my apartment just because it made me feel pretty.”
“Well, please allow me to confirm that you are very pretty,” Nick smiles as he opens the car door for you. You thank him as you get in, completely unaware of Nick’s internal dialogue about whether or not to make this an actual date.
Nick continues to be a gentleman as you arrive at the event. He opens your door for you and offers his arm to walk you inside. You eagerly accept, surprised at how beefy his arm feels. He generally wears long sleeves so you had no idea he was hiding so much muscle.
You walk inside and breathe a little easier when you see that Nick was right in saying it wasn’t an overly formal affair. Part of you had worried you would be under-dressed. Nick walks you around, showing you where things are (especially the open bar), and answering your questions about the event’s etiquette. Remembering that you’re supposed to be here as just friends, once you’re comfortable, you let Nick get to work and wander around on your own.
Nick is trying to focus on his work, getting intel and talking up influential people. But he makes sure to keep an eye out for you, making sure you’re having fun. He finishes up a conversation and hears you laughing loudly before quickly trying to muffle yourself. Nick smiles as he looks for you, but it quickly drops when he sees who you’re with.
Clark Kent, nicknamed Man of Steel because of his near monopoly of the industry. His union busting and bribery has kept him on top and made him richer than any one man should be. Nick’s been working for the Family to try to find anything that can bring him down. Unfortunately, he’s bulletproof. Nothing sticks and he gets to keep his incredibly clean record and reputation. And he’s chatting you up, making you laugh.

It’s dark by the time you feel the strength of The Pull reaching its peak, and you know what that means. You look around into the darkness. In the wastes there isn’t much besides stretches of empty barren land and mountains in the distance. You know you’re not yet at your destination which can only mean one thing. The boy with the flag was headed toward you too.
You see twin lights in the distance. A car headed toward you. Eventually you stop in the middle of the road and just wait. The lights get closer until they shine on your windscreen and you both sit, unmoving, just waiting for the other to make the first move.
You cut the truck’s engine and step out.
The boys does the same. The lights of your vehicles illuminate the night just enough that you can make out each other in the darkness.
The boy steps forward enough that he is more clearly thrown into view and you can see now the warm brown eyes, his features which are so different from Troy’s. Softer but still strong. You hesitate. Your gun is tucked in the back of your jeans and your fingers twitch.
The boy speaks.
“Hi… I’m Nick.”
You don’t say anything, you just keep watching until he clears his throat as if a little unsure of himself.
“You came alone?”
For a second you could have kicked yourself. Coming alone had been a risk but now that he was here, in the middle of nowhere and no one knew where you’d gone you realised how vulnerable you’d left yourself.
“For now.” You answered him flatly. At least if you were vague about whether you had people with you it might make him have second thoughts if he was planning anything questionable.
The boy waits a beat before trying again.
“I guess you felt it too then…”
You don’t want to say the words out loud so you simply nod your head. The boy, Nick, continues.
“I thought I was going crazy at first. I never thought I’d find my… find you. Feel it, you know?”
You frown at this. Everyone worries they’ll never find their soulmate but something in his voice captures your attention. It’s less that he’s worried about the odds and more… something you can’t quite distinguish.
“Why?” You ask.
Nick hesitated before shrugging a little.
“That’s a… it doesn’t matter. What matters now is that… I found you. It feels… weird. Don’t you think?”
Perhaps if you hadn’t already had the experience with Troy you would agree. But you didn’t want him to know that Troy was your soulmate and so you don’t answer his question.
“Look I came here to warn you. Some of the people from my community are coming back tonight to finish what they started before. You need to tell your people to run.”
Nick frowns at this information.
“We agreed to a truce-“
You shake your head in annoyance. You don’t want to explain all this. You want him to just listen to your warning and leave so you can forget about whatever this mistake is between you both and go home, go back to Troy.
“They’re acting of their own accord. Some of the men have certain… loyalties. This isn’t about protecting their home it’s about revenge.”
Nick is watching you closely now and you don’t like the way his eyes are roaming over you. You freeze. You wonder if he can feel your emotions just like you can with Troy. You reach out in the same way you do with Troy and try to find Nick, to feel what he feels… there’s nothing. Just the regular sense of The Pull.
“You’re warning me because of this feeling between us? You came looking for me because of it.”
You shake your head growing more frustrated as all you want to do is head back before Mike and the others see you out here.
“I don’t have time to explain myself. You have to get your people and go, far away from here. Don’t come back.”
Nick’s eyes widen as he realises you have no intention of staying with him.
“But… you have to come with me. When I left earlier, after I saw you, it felt like my heart was being-“
“It doesn’t matter.” You say quickly, all too familiar with that pain. “I can’t come. I won’t go with you. But I don’t want you to die either so, please, leave.”
Nick is staring at you incredulously.
“I can’t do that.”
You actually growl from your frustration with him.
“Why!?”
“Because,” Nick says as he steps closer. You take a large step away from him. You can’t risk him getting too close, having him touch you. You don’t know what will happen. “I just found you. I can’t walk away!”
“Then run! Drive! Fucking skip for all I care! If you stay, you die. Not that I care-“
“That’s a lie.” Nick cuts you off quickly. “Soulmates need each other. Hearts literally break when they lose one another. So why… why are you denying this?”
You swallow nervously and look at truck. You could just get back in now and drive away, but what if he follows? You have a feeling he would. He seems the type. Reckless and stubborn.
“I… it’s complicated.”
You say and you hate how pathetic that sounds.
“It’s Complicated used to be a Facebook status.” Nick quips quickly. “Tell me the truth. Why run from me?”
“I’m not!”
“Then what are you running from!? Or… wait… what are you going back to?”
You clench your jaw as Nick slowly starts to put the pieces together in his head.
“You have someone-“
“No.”
“A boyfriend? Fiancé?”
“No! No one!”
“Your home then, your community. You’re worried this would cause a problem. Conflict? But maybe it could help solve the bad blood between us! Two soulmates who find each other in opposites sides-“
“This isn’t bloody Romeo and Juliet, Nick!”
He grins and it makes you want to slap the beautiful smile off his face.
“You’re hardly Juliet sweetheart.”
You snarl, your anger beginning to erupt. Why won’t he just listen! Why make this so complicated!
“Whatever! Just get in your car and drive away Romeo!”
Nick laughs and it’s almost like he’s enjoying this.
“Oh the universe is truly a bitch. I didn’t think it’d find my soulmate because I didn’t deserve one. But maybe I do. It’s ironic that she would hate me, a poetic kind of punishment I guess…”
Your expression eases but doesn’t soften as you listen to him ramble. Hate? You didn’t hate him…
“Why would you be punished?” You ask, your senses on alert in case this was the part where he confides he’s a serial killer or something.
Nick shrugs again.
“If you got to know me, you’d understand.”
You shake your head again with a weary sigh.
“You don’t listen to do.”
Nick steps forward again and this time the light moves so he’s back in the shadows with you.
“I could… but you’d need to actually tell me something for me to hear it. Something besides “run away” because that isn’t happening.”
You swear at him and he smirks.
“We don’t have time. Your people will be killed.”
Nick rubs his hand over the back of his neck and it finally seems to dawn on him, he has other responsibilities. Other people to protect.
“When are your people attacking?” He says.
“They’re leaving the ranch around midnight, so probably by the early hours of the morning. Before sunrise though.”
“Element of surprise, cover of darkness. They’re smart.”
“And we’ll armed. So will you listen to me now?”
Nick states at you for a few seconds and you almost believe he’d let his people risk being slaughtered instead of going back to warn them.
“Fine.”
You blink at him.
“Fine?”
“That’s what I said. I’ll go back. I’ll warn them.”
“And you’ll run? You can’t fight back, it’ll be a bloodbath.”
“Look I can’t promise anything… we have some stubborn members of our group and they might not take the truce being broken well-“
“The truce isn’t broken. It’s just a small group-“
“Still breaking the truce. Still disobeying your leader, right?”
You bite your tongue. Jeremiah wasn’t their leader officially but…
“Yeah. Yeah I guess. So what? You’ll go back and they try to defend themselves?”
Nick shrugs again.
“If they think it’s more beneficial than running.”
You pinch the bridge of your nose.
“I’m getting a damn headache.”
For some reason this amuses Nick.
“Head rub?”
Your look at him is deadly and he sniggers.
“Joking. Lighten up. Look, I’ll go back and do what I can to stop anymore death. But I can’t promise anything. We lost people. The guy who was in charge came at us like a demon. We didn’t stand a chance…”
Your stomach twists as Nick talks about Troy.
“You want revenge?”
Nick’s expression blanks out and you recognise the perfectly controlled mask on his face. You’d used it yourself before.
“Me? No. But there are those who do.”
“Then convince them their lives aren’t worth it. Tonight is not their night to die. Please… no more death.”
Your voice breaks as you finish your sentence and Nick tilts his head at you. You look away, hating that you’d let some vulnerability slip through.
“Who’d you lose?”
You take a slow breath and shake your head.
“Doesn’t matter. Just… do what you can. And if you can’t save them… save yourself at least.”
Nick looks like he wants to say more. He looks pained.
“Can I… see you again?”
It’s almost laughable. Like a schoolboy asking out his crush. You place your hand on the door of the truck and grip it tight as you give him a firm “no” and turn away before you can see the look on his face.
You slide into your truck and slam the door, locking it before turning in the engine. This was for the best. You didn’t know what else to do. There had been some mistake and maybe Nick had another soulmate out there somewhere too? You hoped so… you didn’t want him to be in pain.
You hear a loud tap at the window and you look over to see Nick still standing there, motioning for you to wind it down. You do, only a few inches so you can hear him speak.
Nick pauses as he looks you over before speaking.
“It’s him, isn’t it.”
You frown and Nick elaborates.
“The guy who attacked us. The one whose skull was caved in. He’s why you won’t stay with me.”
You feel your stomach drop. How did he know? Your hands clench on the wheel as you grit your teeth.
“His name is Troy.”
“Troy…” Nick repeats and you hear the sadness and disappointment in his voice. “Well, you must love him a lot to chose him over your soulmate.”
You avoid his eyes still and stare straight ahead until the light from his car burns your eyes.
Nick continues.
“… I hope he makes it, for your sake. And… I want you to know it wasn’t me. I didn’t hurt him.”
You nod. Not that it would have mattered, as much as you loved Troy you could understand he’d made a choice that led to his own injuries. Even if he’d done it to protect you… you hated that the blood spilled was on your hands too now.
“I have to go.” You say emptily, and put the truck into reverse.
Nick steps back just in time to save his foot being run over as you reverse and turn, glancing back to see his shadow in the headlights as you drive back home. Back to Troy. Back to where your heart felt complete… as you try to ignore how it felt as if you’d just left a piece of it in the darkness behind you…

We were separated from the group, the two of us just wanted a little time alone. We were finally safe so Nick and I thought we could just have a little time to relax. Nick packed us each two sandwiches and we just sat in the woods on a beat up little blanket. It was romantic, even if the dead were wondering around somewhere. We were careful. We made sure no dead were around us. All we wanted to do was have some us time. After we ate we just sat back and relaxed. Nick had go to the bathroom, so he left to a near by tree. I couldn’t see him, but I knew he wasn’t far. I laid back and closed my eyes for a moment, just relaxing. It was like I wasn’t in a world where dead were walking the earth. I heard footsteps approaching me, but assumed it was just Nick. I smiled to myself and waiting for him to lay with me. As the footsteps got closer I heard some groaning. I furrowed my brow and opened my eyes to see a walker towering over me. I screamed as it fell onto me. I tried my best to fight it off, but I felt it’s teeth sink into my skin.
“Y/N!” I heard Nick call and then fast footsteps coming my way.
“Oh shit…” I heard him say, but I watched as he quickly held up his knife. He rushed over and stabbed it in the head. He hurled the body off me and helped me sit up.
“Nick…” I whispered with tears in my eyes. He looked into my eyes and I pulled my shirt off my shoulder and he gasped.
“W-We’ll fix this.” He said and helped me up.
“Mom and Alicia will help us figure this out.” He said and gathered up the blanket. He grabbed my hand and lead me back to our camp.
“Nick, I can’t go back.” I whispered and stopped him from moving. He turned around and caressed my cheek.
“No…” He whispered back.
“Nick… I can’t risk everyone’s safety…” I said, letting the tears fall.
“No! No…” He said, shaking his head. I sighed and kissed him deeply.
“I need you and everyone to be safe… I’m dead, Nicky…” I whispered and he shook his head once again.
“I promise, we can figure this out, I’m not gonna let you die.” He said. He grabbed my hand again and headed for the camp. I sighed and let him pull me behind him.
*Three Days Later*
The had cut the bite off my shoulder as best they could, but it didn’t matter. I felt incredibly weak, my skin was paling, and I had a high fever that wouldn’t go down. Nick had refused to leave my side. I looked over at him, his head was leaning on my bed sleeping. He looked so peaceful. Even though I was feeling like shit, he made me feel better.
I sat up suddenly and started coughing like crazy. I couldn’t stop… Nick’s head shot up and looked up at me with wide eyes. He looked at me scared. I had my mouth covered and when the coughing finally stopped I pulled it away. My eyes widened as I saw the blood covering my hand. I looked over at Nick and his eyes were filled with tears.
“N-Nicky…” I whispered. He got up and silently cleaned my hand of my blood.
“Nicky…” I whispered again, but he ignored me. I shakily grabbed his hand to stop him from cleaning mine and he still wouldn’t look at me.
“Nicky, please look at me.” I said and he took a deep breath. He looked up at me, tears still in his eyes.
“It’s time to say goodbye, Nicky.” I whispered and he shut his eyes tightly and shook his head.
“No. We can still fix you!” He shouted and I flinched slightly. The door opened and his Mom and Sister rushed in.
“What’s wrong?” Madison asked.
“Nothing, Y/N/N’s just not feeling good still.” Nick said and I shook my head.
“I coughed up blood…” I said and their eyes widened.
“No…” Alicia said and let her tears fall freely.
“We can still fix her! S-She’s gonna be fine!” Nick shouted and threw the rag he was holding across the room.
“Nick, honey, calm down.” Madison said.
“She’ll be fine!” He said, a tear slipping from his eye.
“Alicia, take your brother outside.” Madison said and she nodded. I watched the siblings leave the room and Nick looked back at me just before he left.
“I love you, Nicky.” I said and he gave me a sad smile.
“I love you too, baby.” He said and came back in to kiss me before he left. I took a shaky breath and looked up at Madison, who was taking a seat next to me.
“I need you to end this…” I whispered and she nodded. She pulled out her gun and looked at me.
“Are you sure?” She asked.
“I’m not getting better, Madison…” I said, looking down at my hands. She gently grabbed mine and squeezed.
“J-Just make sure Nicky doesn’t lose himself…” I said, letting my tears fall freely. I watched a tear slip down her cheek and gave me a nod.
“I promise.” She said. She held up her gun and aimed it at my head.
“Tell Nicky I’m sorry and that I’ll always be with him.” I said and she pulled the trigger.
*Nick’s POV*
Alicia and I were sitting close to Y/N’s room. I knew my Mom would take care of her, she loved her. Y/N made my life better and both my Mom and Sister loved her. She was family from the first time we started dating. Alicia and I were hugging when I heard the gun shot. I pulled away quickly and wiped my head towards Y/N’s room.
“No…” I whispered. I ran to her room and burst though the door. I saw my Mom with her gun in her lap and my sweet Y/N with her head leaning to the side and blood pouring from the side.
“What did you do!?” I shouted and Alicia came in behind me. I heard her gasp, but I didn’t care. I was focused on my Mother who just shot my girlfriend.
“She was dying Nick. She asked me to.” She said and I rushed over to Y/N’s side. I cradled her in my arms and let my tears that I’ve been holding back fall.
“How could you do this to me? I love her!” I shouted and my Mom looked at me sadly.
“I just ended her suffering, Nick. She was dead anyway.” She said as a few tears rolled down her cheeks.
“I love her…” I cried and held her tighter.

4,252 Days Chapter 2: Day 1, Pt 2
Previous | Masterlist | Next
Fic Summary: FTWD re-written to include an OC named Gemma who has a platonic relationship/friends with benefits situation with Nick Clark and then goes on to be with Troy Otto. Chapter Summary: Gemma sits with Nick at the hospital before his family arrive Word Count: 2192 Author’s Note: Gif from here.
Tumblr media
It isn’t long before they arrive at the hospital and Nick is unloaded from the ambulance and wheeled down some corridors and into a shared room. That must be a good sign, Gemma thinks, the sickest people always get a room to themselves. Dad got a room to himself. She stands outside the door not sure what to do with herself but thinking it’s best to keep out of the way while they get Nick comfortable, attach him to a drip and ask him questions she can’t quite hear the answer to.
“Is it okay if I go in and sit with him?” Gemma asks the final person to walk out the room once they’re done with him, a nurse, she assumes.
“Do you know him, miss?”
“I was there when he got hit. I just thought maybe I could keep him company until his friends or family get here. I don’t know. Sounds weird now that I’m saying it, actually. Maybe I should just…” Gemma gestures to the exit.
The nurse smiles politely, a dimple forming on each cheek, and touches Gemma’s arm before saying, “If he’s comfortable with you being here then, yes, you’re very welcome to stay. It could be good for him, keep him calm.”
“Great, thank you.” Gemma smiles.
As she walks in Gemma sees Nick laying in his hospital bed, no longer donning the stretched out, white t-shirt and jeans. Now he’s in a white patterned hospital gown, staring at the patient in the bed on the right side of the room, an old man with thinning grey hair being tended to by another nurse. As Gemma gets closer to him, Nick turns his attention to her.
“You’re still here,” he says. His voice is slightly monotone. He should probably be resting. “Don’t you have places to be?”
“Sorry, I- '' she feels awkward, “Yeah, I’m still here. No, I don’t have places to be. I was thinking of staying, just until someone you know shows up.”
“Okay.”
“Okay.” Gemma makes her way to the chair at the side of Nick’s bed and takes off her blazer, leaving her in a short-sleeved white blouse, another item borrowed from Liv that morning. She puts the blazer over the back of the chair before sitting down.
Gemma knows she should hold off for a bit, have a normal conversation with him first before asking this, but she can’t, “Look, tell me to shut up if you don’t want to have this conversation but... What were you looking for earlier? You kept looking around, like you were trying to find something. You seemed.. scared?”
“Nice tattoos,” says Nick, trying to sound casual.
“Thanks,” Gemma replies, appreciating the compliment but knowing it’s Nick’s way of avoiding the question. She looks down at her tattooed arms. The biggest is a snake, winding down her left forearm to her wrist. Gemma runs her hand over it. “I saw a snake at the zoo one time when I was about seven and then spent the better part of three years begging my mum for one as a pet. This is the closest I’ve ever got to actually getting one.”
“There’s still time.” Nick says.
“Yeah, there is.” Gemma nods. “So, how are you feeling? Better now that you’re in a bed and not on the concrete, I assume?”
Nick doesn’t respond to Gemma’s question. Instead his eyes follow the nurse who was tending to the old man as she gives him a small smile, pulls forward the curtain to separate the two of them and then walks out of the room. It’s safe to talk now.
“You’ll think I’m crazy,” Nick says seriously, “I think I’m crazy.”
Gemma leans forward in her chair, intrigued, concerned.
“I saw… something. Someone. I saw someone. When I was hit, I was running from someone and I don’t know if…” He rubs his hands down his face, something he can only just do as each hand is cuffed to the side of the bed, avoiding saying any more.
“You don’t know if it was real.” Gemma finishes the sentence for him. Nick looks at her, fear and worry etched all over his face, and nods.
“I didn’t see you leave there but the way you kept looking back at it- You came from the church, right? Listen, I know that church, I’ve been to that church, I-”
“You’ve been there?” Nick cuts Gemma off. Now he’s the one intrigued.
“It’s not an interesting story, trust me. There was a wagon, I fell off it, not for the first time, and that church is where I ended up for a few days.”
“When? I never saw you there.”
“Maybe we just missed each other.” Gemma shrugs. “Or maybe we were too off our faces to notice one another.”
“If I had to bet on it, I think I’d go with the second option.” Nick responds, smiling slightly.
“Yeah, I think I would too,” Gemma laughs before trying to steer the conversation back on track. “So, what you saw…”
“Back when I got hit, I was looking around so much because I was so sure about what I’d seen, it felt so real, you know, but now? I’ve been thinking about it so much that I don’t even know. Maybe I just imagined it.” Nick throws his head back onto his pillow, looking up at the ceiling as he talks. “But then what does that mean for me, Gemma? I must be.. insane, actually insane.” He looks at her now. “And what I saw was so bad that maybe that would be better, if it just came from me, because that being real? I don’t even know what that would mean. For me, for you, for everyone.”
Gemma can see the worry in Nick’s eyes, she feels bad for him. “Is there a chance you just hallucinated?” She tries to reassure him. “I mean, maybe it wasn’t real and maybe you’re not insane. Maybe you just got high and hallucinated.”
“I really want to write it off like that, I do, but that’s never happened to me before.”
“Nick, what is it we’re actually talking about right now?” Gemma asks, almost whispering. “You saw someone? You saw them, what?”
“I saw-”
Just as Nick starts talking, he cuts himself off, looking towards the door where two police officers can be seen, and heard, striding down the corridor towards the room Nick, Gemma and the old man are occupying.
“Nick Clark?” Asks the first to enter, a short black man. He’s already reaching into his pocket for a small notepad.
“That’s me.” Nick responds, voice calmer and more upbeat than it was five seconds ago.
“I’m Officer Lake and this is my colleague, Officer Martin. We need to talk to you about what happened this morning.”
“I went for a walk.” Nick responds. Gemma sits quietly in her chair, wondering if now is her cue to leave or not.
“You were running, Nick.”
“I went for a run.” Gemma can see Nick smirking.
“Barefoot, down “Needle Alley”?”
“Man, Kenyans run barefoot.”
“Uh-huh. You said someone got hurt. You remember that? You were raving about “flesh and blood and viscera.””
So that was what Nick was saying to the doctors while Gemma was waiting outside. Flesh and blood? Whose flesh and blood? Nick had said he was running from someone so does that mean there’s someone out there right now hurt or hurting people? Gemma tries to remain neutral but knows a look of worry is forming on her face as her mind runs through what this could mean. She can never control the look on her face.
She sees Nick turn to look at her, like he’s realised that piece of information is going to make her start thinking all sorts of things. She stares back at him, trying to figure out what he wants her to do, what she wants to do. Stay or leave? Say something or say nothing?
It only takes her a second to decide. Stay. Say nothing.
Maybe it was all in his head, she rationalises, and she isn’t going to bring up things he’s said and end up being responsible for him being taken away if it turns out there’s nothing going on and this was just a very bad trip. And even if it is real, whatever this is, they don’t have any proof right now. How likely is it that the police will believe something with no proof and coming from a drug addict? Not very. Best to let it play out for now. She looks at Nick and he knows she’s not going to say anything.
“It’s runner’s high.” Nick says to Officer Lake. “Oh, and I don’t know what viscera is.”
Officer Lake looks at his partner. They’re suspicious. “Okay, tell us where you scored. Lots of kids buying in that hood. We clean it up, you come out a hero.” Nick starts laughing. “Nick, you could have died.”
“Yeah, coulda, woulda, shoulda.”
“Okay, we’ll take it from the top. Nick, why were you running.”
Gemma leans back in her chair, preparing to be sat for a while, since these officers seem determined to get answers that Nick isn’t willing to give, and just as she gets comfy a woman with shoulder length blonde hair comes charging into the room. Nick’s mother.
“Is my son under arrest?” She demands.
“No, ma’am.”
“Then get out. Thank you. Leave.”
“We could charge him.” Lake continues, but Nick’s mother clearly isn’t phased.
“Well, charge him when he’s healed. For now, go away.”
Officer Lake turns to the man who followed her in. “Does she do all the talking?”
“Get the-.” She stops herself. “Get out.” She says firmly. Gemma starts thinking things are about to get interesting but instead Lake holds his hands up and walks out while Officer Martin hands the man who entered with Nick’s mum a card before he trails out behind him.
“What happened?” Nick’s mum asks him demandingly. “And who’s this?” She questions, looking towards Gemma, giving her a once over. Gemma isn’t sure if the mild annoyance in her tone is a product of Nick’s situation being aimed at the wrong person or if she’s actually annoyed at her but either way this time it definitely feels like her cue.
“I’m no one, sorry.” Gemma starts to stand, grabbing hold of her blazer she put on the back of the chair. “I got to Nick when he was hit and thought I’d stick around until his family got here and, well, now you’re here, so, I should leave.”
“Yeah, you should.” The woman replies curtly.
“Mom!” Nick shouts at her before looking to Gemma. “Sorry, what she actually meant to say was thank you. And me too. Thank you.”
“No worries,” Gemma smiles to Nick, not acknowledging his mother's comment at all.
She wants to bring up what he was saying before but decides it’s better not to. She isn’t sure what Nick wants his family to know. Instead, she steps over to the small nurse’s station at the side of the room, grabs a blue, ballpoint pen and a small slip of paper and writes down her name and phone number.
“This is embarrassing to do in front of your family but um, when you get out of this place and you’re feeling better, give me a call, if you want to. We can… I don’t know, go on one of those shoeless hikes.” Gemma smiles and hands the paper to him, looking him in the eye as she says the last bit.
She hopes he can tell what she really means. If he wants to tell her more about what he saw, find out if it was real or just dodgy drugs from a dodgy dealer, then she’ll help him out. He just has to call.
Nick does a small nod. She nods back then starts walking out, past his parents. A girl he assumes is Nick’s sister looks up at her and moves back slightly to let her pass. Gemma is pretty sure that’s the first time she’s taken her eyes off her phone since they walked in. Proof of Nick being here often, she thinks.
Once Gemma is out of the room she hears Nick start talking and slows down to catch what he’s saying. “What was that, mom?” He asks, annoyance in his voice. “Travis, tell her she was out of order.”
“What was what?” She looks behind her to the man, Travis, and then back to Nick and makes a huffing sound. She’s defensive. “I don’t know who she is. I don’t know who you hang around with these days. Excuse me for being worried.”
“You don’t even know the girl, Maddie, come on.” Travis notes, trying to calm things down.
“She wasn’t dressed like a druggy.” The girl adds nonchalantly.
“Okay, just relax. I told her she should go, I didn’t exactly rip into her.” She justifies herself. Gemma shakes her head and decides to pick up the pace and get out of there. Let Nick’s mother think what she wants.
