pokój Jakuba Adamczewskiego - krótka analiza programu ikonograficznego

(podstawą mojej analizy są ujęcia pokoju zaprezentowane przede wszystkim w epizodach 1, 3 i 4 oraz w filmiku "Welcome to my Dworek" z kanału Netflix na yt, mniej pomocniczy, ale równie warty obejrzenia jest filmik na instagramie Michała Sikorskiego (aktora wicelającego się w rolę Jakuba) "MTv Cribs x 1670" (michalsikorski.official))

Wygląda na to, że w pokoju Jakuba znajdują się cztery obrazy, pięć rzeźb i w ramie łóżka jedna płaskorzeźba.

Zacznijmy od obrazów:

Nad wejściem do jego pokoju, w miejscu, w którym tradycyjnie wiesza się krufcyfiks znajduje się obraz przedstawiający Chrystusa w typie Vir Dolorum (Męża Boleści) (czyli przedstawienie Chrystusa martwego lub zmartwychwstałego, eksponujące rany zadane mu podczas ukrzyżowania). To konkretne przedstawienie to reprodukcja obrazu z niderlandzkiego warsztatu Alberta Boutsa powstałego ok. 1525, znajdującego się w zbiorach The Met (The Man of Sorrows). [screen z 1 odcinka]

Takie przedstawienie Chrystusa ma swoje źródła w ikonografii bizantyjskiej, a w Europie Zachodniej swoją popularność zyskało w ramach propagowanej w późnym średniowieczu pobożności polegającej na uczuciowym rozmyślaniu o męce Chrystusa i tzn. "współodczuwaniu".

Drugi obraz wisi nad łóżkiem Jakuba oraz pojawia się w pierwszej po czołówce scenie w odcinku 4, gdy na chwilę Jakub wiesza go w pokoju Stanisława. Jest to reprodukcja obrazu przedstawiającego Świętego Franciszka z Asyżu włoskiego malarza Antoniazza Romano z lat 1480-81, obecnie w zbiorach The Met (Saint Francis of Assisi). [screeny kolejno z 4, 1 i 3 odcinka]

Święty Franciszek jest założycielem zakonu franciszkanów, który ukształtował w swoich pismach nowy rodzaj duchowości (duchowość franciszkańska), który charakteryzuje duża uczuciowość, wierne naśladowanie Chrystusa - zwłaszcza w aspekcie ubóstwa, bezwarunkowo miłość do bliźniego, a to wszystko połączone z radością życia i uwielbieniem Boga. Na obrazie święty prezentuje stygmaty na dłoniach i na boku.

Kolejne dwa obrazy wiszą nad biurkiem (kanonem?).

Pierwszy z nich, mniejszy i bliżej drzwi to reprodukcja obrazu hiszpańskiego malarza Franciso de Zurbarana z około 1640-45 przedstawiającego Świętego Benedykta z Nursji, znajdującego się w zbiorach The Met (Saint Benedict). [screeny z odcinka 3 i 1]

Świętemu Benedyktowi z Nursji przypisuje się autorstwo reguły benedyktyńskiej. Jest on jedynym z Ojców Kościoła i głównym patronem Europy.

Ostatni obraz wiszący obok obrazu ze świętym Benedyktem, to przedstawienie Hieronimity, Brata Gregorio Belo z włoskiego miasta Vicenza pędzla włoskiego malarza Lorenza Lotto z 1547 roku, obecnie w zbiorach The Met (Brother Gregorio Belo of Vicenza). [screeny z odcinka 1 oraz ze wspomnianego wyżej (i podlinkowanego) filmiku z instagrama Michała Sikorskiego]

Zdaje się (co widać na screenie instagramowym), że na reprodukcji dodano nimb wokół głowy brata Gregoria. Zasadniczo nie jest to przedstawienie świętego - o bracie Gregoriu nic nie znalazłam i zdaje się, że jest to po prostu przedstawienie mnicha (Hieronimity) podczas pobożnej kontemplacji męki Chrystusa (która jako projekcja jego rozważań ukazana została w tle - tak przynajmniej podaje notka na stornie The Met) w ujęciu powielającym schemat, w którym najczęściej przedstawiano Świętego Hieronima ze Strydonu, założyciela kongregacji eremickiej, do której należał sportretowany.

Pięć rzeźb znajduje się w rogu pokoju na przeciw drzwi wejściowych, tworząc rodzaj "ołtarzyka" przed którym stoi klęcznik. Figury ustawione są na prostych, niepolichromowanych drewnianych konsolach. W odróżnieniu od obrazu rzeźba jest obiektem przestrzennym, co znacznie utrudnia wybór takowej do scenografii - z obrazami sprawa jest prosta - w ramy wsadza się reprodukcje, która pokryta werniksem albo po prostu pokazana w naturalnym świetle w oku kamery niewiele różni się od faktycznego obrazu. Tymczasem wykonanie przekonującej reprodukcji rzeźby drewnianej jest zdecydowanie trudniejszym i bardziej pracochłonnym zadaniem. Stąd, wydaje mi się, rzeźby te nie powtarzają żadnych znanych dzieł, a są po prostu rzeźbami prezentującymi szeroko przyjęte typy figur dewocyjnych, jakie cały czas można kupić do kościoła lub kaplicy (na przykład tutaj - niepolichromowane rzeźby drewniane również dewocyjne, całkiem swoją drogą podobne do rzeźby środkowej). [screeny z odcinka 1 i z filmiku "Welcome to my Dworek"]

Rzeźba środkowa przedstawia Chrystusa błogosławiącego i jest jedyną rzeźbą niepolichromowaną.

Pierwsza od lewej jest Maria z dzieciątkiem, następnie Święty Antoni Padewski (?), franciszkanin i cudo twórca (znajomy Świętego Franciszka z Asyżu), patron osób i rzeczy zaginionych, dzieci, małżeństw i narzeczeństw (według ludowej tradycji pomagający dziewczętom znaleźć dobrych narzeczonych). W ikonografii przedstawiany często (tak jak na naszym przykładzie) z Dzieciątkiem Jezus na ręce (wtedy zwykle w drugiej trzyma kwiat lilii - tutaj tego nie ma, nasz święty trzyma chyba coś innego, ale nie jestem w stanie powiedzieć, co to jest, stąd trochę niepewne rozpoznanie). [screeny z filmiku "Welcome to my Dworek"]

Na prawo od dużej rzeźby Chrystusa znajduje się najpierw rzeźba Świętego Piotra - następcy Chrystusa jako głowy kościoła i tym samym pierwszego biskupa Rzymu. Święty Piotr jest uważany za najważniejszego spośród dwunastu apostołów, któremu Chrystus przekazał władzę nad Kościołem na Ziemi, co realizuje się w motywie przekazania Piotrowi przez Chrystusa kluczy - stąd klucz jako najbardziej rozpowszechniony atrybut tego świętego, widoczny również w dłoni naszej rzeźby. Ostatnia rzeźba na prawo to Święty Paweł (?) - rozpoznanie to opieram na trzymanym przez postać mieczu (stałym atrybucie Świętego Pawła), dodatkowo Paweł jest w ikonografii nadzwyczaj często przedstawiany właśnie wraz z Piotrem. Święty Paweł jest wedle tradycji uważany za Apostoła Narodów (choć formalnie nie był nigdy uczniem Jezusa; nawrócił się po jego Wniebowstąpieniu), jest również uważany za autora 1 Listu do Koryntian, którego fragmentem jest tzn. "Hymn o Miłości". [screeny z filmiku "Welcome do my Dworek" oraz z odcinka 4]

Oczywiście z dużym prawdopodobieństwem każda z tych rzeźba jest powieleniem lub odległym echem jakiejś stosunkowo znanej kompozycji; ich dokładne opisanie i rozpoznanie pozostaje sprawą otwartą.

Jak już wspomniałam w pokoju Jakuba znajduje się jeszcze, w wezgłowiu łóżka płaskorzeźba. Przedstawia ona Świętego Jerzego podczas walki ze smokiem; jest to przedstawienie epizodu ze średniowiecznej legendy, często powtarzanej w średniowiecznych romansach. Święty Jerzy jest patron rolników, pasterzy i pól (jego dzień (23 albo 24 kwietnia) uważano za najlepszy dla rozpoczęcia prac polowych), pod jego patronatem powstało również wiele bractw rycerskich i zgromadzeń zakonnych oraz zakonów rycerskich. [screeny z odcinka 1 i 2]

Poza tym zlokalizować można w pokoju Jakuba dwa (?) krucyfiksy; jeden stoi na kominku i jest to prosty w swojej formie, drewniany krzyż na podwyższeniu. Co do drugiego (krzyż również drewniany, ale z polichromowanym wizerunkiem Chrystusa, wiszący a nie stojący), to sprawa jest trochę bardziej skomplikowana, ponieważ widzimy go tylko w filmiku "Welcome to my Dworek", w pojedynczy, kadrze, nie widzimy go jednak ani razu w szerszym ujęciu pokoju; stąd wniosek, że jeśli w ogóle już się tam faktycznie znajduje, to musi wisieć między łóżkiem a drzwiami, w miejscu, którego ani razu nie widzimy, ponieważ zasłania je otwarte skrzydło drzwi. Wnioski

Trzeba przyznać, że po tej analizie wnioski są marne. Zdaje się, że obecne w pokoju Jakuba obrazy i rzeźby ani nie układają się w żaden przemyślany program ikonograficzny ani nie stanowią grupy precyzyjnie wybranej (O zaskoczenie!).

Najbardziej "pasujący" do konwencji tych wszystkich narzędzi "pokutnych" obecnych w pokoju Jakuba i sugerowanego tym samym zainteresowania cierpieniem wydaje mi się obraz Vir dolorum wiszący nad drzwiami i być może dlatego właśnie on jest w serialu najlepiej wyeksponowany.

Obraz z przedstawieniem Świętego Franciszka jest dla mnie zagadką, ponieważ zarówno to, że w swoim "stanie spoczynku" wisi nad łóżkiem Jakuba oraz to, że jest jak gdyby "obrazem symbolem" użytym w momencie, w którym Jakub chce pokazać, że zastąpi Stanisława w jego roli dziedzica (Stanisława reprezentuje tam obraz przedstawiający gitarzystę), wydaje się sugerować jakieś szczególne znaczenie tego przedstawienia dla Jakuba lub szczególne jego znaczenie jako "oznaczającego" Jakuba. Stąd zresztą w pierwszej chwili, bez przyjrzenia się i bez kwerendy uznałam, że to pewnie przedstawienie Świętego Jakuba - wtedy analogia, jako że obraz przedstawiał by patrona Jakuba, jego świętego imiennika, była by oczywista. Tymczasem przynajmniej bazując na tym co wiemy, nie da się w tym miejscu wytłumaczyć Świętego Franciszka.

(btw czy ktoś wie, czy w czasach nowożytnych określenie "Ojciec" było, tak jak dziś zarezerwowane jedynie dla zakonników-kapłanów czy zwyczajowo mówiło się tak też do księży spoza zgromadzeń zakonnych?)

Z tym, że choć ewentualna przynależność do zgromadzenia zakonnego, mogłaby tłumaczyć portret Świętego Franciszka (należałoby założyć wtedy przynależność Jakuba do zgromadzenia franciszkańskiego), to należy uwzględnić jeszcze przedstawienie Świętego Benedykta nad biurkiem, które równie dobrze mogłoby sugerować przynależność do benedyktynów. Poza tym brak w moim odczuciu jakiś oznak pobożności franciszkańskiej w Jakubie (ktoś by mnie zapytał czy widać jakąkolwiek pobożność, ale zdaje mi się, że bardziej valid byłaby próba powiązania go np. z bardziej jezuickim podejściem do sprawy (ale jezuitów brak pośród przedstawień w pokoju)). Może przewaga świętych franciszkańskich (Franciszek i rzeźba Antoniego Padewskiego) faktycznie coś sugeruje, ale wydaje mi się to raczej mało prawdopodobne biorąc pod uwagę całokształt.

Wspomniałam już o Świętym Benedykcie, co zaś do obrazu obok przedstawiającego brata Gregoria to w ogóle nie mam nic do powiedzenia poza tym, że wygląda to dla mnie na wybór całkowicie przypadkowy.

Moja teoria dotycząca obrazów jest dość prosta - być może Netflix ma umowę z The Met, która zezwala na dowolne użycie ich reprodukcji ich zbiorów w produkcjach Netflixa i tym samym jedynym, kryterium wyboru była przynależność do kolekcji The Met (choć chyba dałoby się wybrać lepiej).

Co do rzeźb to tak, jak już poniekąd napisałam, podejrzewam, że ich wybór odbył się na zasadzie "to co w miarę łatwo pozyskać to weźmiemy". Podobnie pewnie było z łóżkiem, bo nie podejrzewam, żeby płaskorzeźba była tam wtórnie wstawiona.

Oczywiście obecność każdego z przedstawień da się jakoś tam wytłumaczyć wewnątrz lore - najprostszym sposobem na to może być "Jakuba tak naprawdę w ogóle nie interesuje jakie obrazy wiszą w jego pokoju i jakie rzeźby tam stoją i zostały przez niego wybrane na chybił trafił" (chociaż dręczyć w tym ujęciu i tak będzie mnie ten Święty Franciszek).

Ale ja bym rzecz jasna wolała, żeby jakieś szersze ikonograficzne znaczenie w tym wszystkim było, a chyba go nie ma.

(W opisie pojedynczych obiektów starałam się mimo to w większości uwypuklić te ich znaczenia, które można jakoś zinterpretować na korzyść).

Jeśli teoria o ograniczeniu wyboru dzieł do zbiorów The Met narzuconym przez Netflix jest prawdziwa (czas zbudować hipotezę na hipotezie), to po dość szybkim ale chyba całkiem dokładnym obejrzeniu zbiorów The Met malarstwa Europejskiego (a te w przedziale lat 1300-1670 nie robią niestety zbyt wielkiego wrażenia) zaczynam chyba rozumieć modus operandi. Przede wszystkim wybór zawężono (dość mocno) do przedstawień portretowych, rezygnując z wybrania obrazów ukazujących epizody z historii świętej lub z życia świętych, ograniczając się zdaje się do zasady „jeden obraz - jedna postać, i to najlepiej nie wykonująca żadnej czynności” (decyzja, którą nie do końca umiem sobie wytłumaczyć!). Po drugie odrzucono wizerunki. Marii z dzieciątkiem, których w zbiorach The Met mnóstwo, zakładam, że w ramach większej „maskulinizacji” przestrzeni (że tak powiem) (wszak jedna tylko rzeźba Marii się pojawia, ale wyjątek potwierdza regułę i jedna jaskółka wiosny nie czyni). Po trzecie zdaje się, że odrzucono pomysł powtórzenia obecności jednej postaci (poza Chrystusem) dwukrotnie, co najpewniej sprawiło, że odrzucono obrazy przedstawiające Świętego Franciszka Frederica Barocciego i Il Grechetta, które są ładniejsze (ciekawsze!) i zdają się bardziej sensowne niż ten portret brata Gregoria, ale najwyraźniej, mimo że postać Franciszka podkreślono (pewnie wcale nie celowo), to najwyraźniej nikt nie chciał w to brnąć jeszcze bardziej.

Fajny też obraz Filippa Tarchiani przedstawiający samobiczującego się Świętego Dominika odrzucono być może ze względu na częściową goliznę świętego.

W tak zawężonej grupie dokonany przez scenarzystów (albo kogoś tam) wybór (przypominam tylko przy założeniu konieczności wybrania dzieł z The Met!) staje się zrozumiały.

just wanna come on here and appreciate blr for a second. ive been apart of many fandom spaces and have seen a lot of things and god is the internet an ugly place. ive left stan twitter a long time ago and just use my personal one and my personal tik tok acc. w these platforms though, no matter how much i curate my feed ill always see negative, toxic things. and as someone who gets passionate ab the things theyre into and whatnot, ive found myself going down the rabbithole ab others tearing down my favs and saying the most nasty things ab them and its so draining to see and read (my fault tho, ik i could simply ignore it but sometimes its hard not to) the point in all of this is that blr is the least toxic fandom space ive been apart of and idk if its bc we just write our silly little fanfics and move on w our day but i will take reading and writing fanfiction over seeing thousands of hate threads of different groups anyday. and ofc theres cons to blr its not perfect but overall its like the least stressful space ive been in. so i appreciate yall and thanks for creating a safe space for me and others <3

The Resident will be greatly missed.

This was one of the few remaining network shows I kept up with. I'm biased, but it's honestly one of the best medical dramas out there.

When it first aired, I remember thinking, "Wow, this is different." Then I kept watching, and I just fell in love with all these characters and their stories. Episode after episode I got sucked into these very relatable stories and medical cases of the week. Till today, the episode that still gets me every time is S02ep20 (episode title: If Not Now, When?). That episode was personal for me. That was when the show became more to me.

That's what the show is about at the heart. It's relatable, it's current but still very high stakes. I always rooted for Conrad to diagnose his patients on time before it was too late, and it hurt when he couldn't. which I appreciated because as much as this is a fictional show where we want everything to have a happy ending, these characters are human and there is only so much one can do. Whether it was an undiagnosed patient for Conrad, or a bad surgical outcome for the ever brilliant Dr. Austin AKA the Raptor, we got to see the human in these characters.

We got to see these characters grow and enter into different life stages. We saw the good, the bad, and the ugly. I will never stop giving credit to the character development of Bell. I would never have thought that this character whom I loathed so much in the beginning became one of my most loved. And even after some main characters left, they still found a way to balance the show without disrespecting anyone.

I truly love the show, and even though I'm sad it's ended, I'm even more grateful it ended on a good note for all of the characters and not on a cliffhanger. I would have loved that the show got a final season as opposed to a cancelation, but the characters got closure in the end. At least I'm not in some limbo thinking about how these characters' stories should end.

Our main couples, Kit/Bell, Billie/Conrad, and Leela/Devon, all got their end game. And even though there was nothing explicitly said, you can actually picture what their future would be like, both in their personal lives and their professional lives.

Even though most of us saw this cancelation coming, it doesn't negate feelings of sadness or disappointment. Whatever the case, I'm glad that the show had a good run. With six seasons, they also got to their 100 episode mark. Not many shows nowadays can boast of that.

So cheers to The Resident ❤️

finally

the (semi) long awaited hux longpost! before i get into any of it though, some disclaimers:

1. i have never read the star wars comics and honestly i never will. i like star wars enough to watch clone wars and suffer through the sequel films. that's it.

2. i will not be giving all my thoughts on hux as a character because then i can make more posts and i like when the numbers go up

3. as i said, i have not read the comics. i honestly only half watched rise of skywalker. this won't be super accurate to the star wars lore or anything like that, this is for fun

4. on that note, while this isn't going to be super serious, there are still heavy and sensitive topics, primarily child abuse and neglect, so if those things bother you, please sit this out

actual longpost/shitty character analysis below the cut

how does one start with a character like hux? despite how little screen time he actually gets in the movies, he's incredibly complex, even before you get into the comics. there's a lot to be said about him, even if you only have context from the movies. and while i could (and probably will) make a separate longpost about how last jedi not only fucked the entire trilogy over, but specifically ruined the character of hux by making a genuine threat into a joke within the first 15 minutes, not today my friends.

i will mostly be focusing on hux in the force awakens, using things from the rise of skywalker and what little i know about his backstory in the comics.

1st it must be stated: i do not like any of the other characters in the squeal trilogy. i don't hate most of them, but i either don't have an opinion on them (finn, rose, bb8 kind of, maaz, kylo to an extent), or i genuinely hate the character entirely (rey, she'll get a longpost later). a lot of it is because most of these characters don't have a lot of personality, which is a problem the sequel trilogy has as a whole. even returning characters are bland or weirdly mean

yes, you can argue that hux doesn't really have a personality either. however, compared to others characters (cough cough rey), he is dripping with personality, if you look a little closer. the first example that comes to mind is the speech scene. when he yells, there is genuine malace, hatred and fury in his voice. he isnt just yelling to be loud, he's yelling because he demands respect, terror and power.

it makes sense why he would want those things, especially when you look at his background in the comics. hux is a bastard child, his father was abusive and neglectful. he probably grew up feeling in adequate and out of control. he grew up in terror, so he is going to inflict that terror on others.

(i also want it to be known, i don't think hux is a good person. he's sympathetic, and with his backstory you can understand why he did what he did, but he also literally blew up several planets so. a little different.)

even in his smaller interactions, he seems stiff. while part of that is probably because no one had any personality, part of it could be purposeful. hux is a character desperately grasping for respect and control. he's stiff because then he can control how the conversations he has go. he's cold and confident because people respect those with plans who present those plans calmly. in tros, hux says "i don't care who wins. i just need kylo ren to lose." he's more focused on the way those around him look. because if they look bad, he looks better, he looks more confident, more in control. even after he's dead, he needs to be respected, feared, whatever. he can't let himself be seen as anything other than entirety perfect.

hux doesn't have a personality, because he can't let himself have anything other than utter perfection. he would rather be feared, loathed and respected than simply appreciated and forgotten.

Ok, but let’s talk for a minute about just how good Nick and Charlie are for each other?? Not only romantically, but how their lifepaths are genuinely changed for the better because of their relationship?

Like, we know Charlie gave Nick the positive queer experience he himself never got to have and supported him through figuring out his sexuality. And Nick helps Charlie rebuild himself after Ben and the bullying, and his eating disorder.

It made me think about how things could have gone if they hadn’t met when they did. Beyond the aw-they-wouldn’t-get-to-meet-their-soulmate-☹ and to the sad, wider implications of not knowing each other.

Sorry for the incoming Way Too Long Ramble about what if Mr Lange had done the seating plan differently.

Charlie

First off, I think Charlie would still break things off with Ben after seeing him with a girlfriend. But the big difference is there’s no Nick to discover Ben assaulting him, and to subsequently confide in about their relationship and reaffirm that Ben is the terrible, awful person.

So, we’re looking at a Charlie who is still carrying this toxic secret alone that could damage and tear away at his self-esteem even more than canon where he fairly quickly gets to build a healthy, loving relationship with Nick who actively combats a lot of the shit that Ben told him

(I wonder if eventually Charlie would have told Tori more?? About the guy who ‘made him feel like it would be better if he didn’t exist’. I hope so, because Charlie, my beloved, while you are an actual angel for not outing that piece of dickweed to anyone, you’re allowed to tell someone)

(Don’t even want to get into if the assault would have progressed further without Nick there. Probably Ben wouldn’t have gone beyond kissing. But it would still be more traumatic, and Nick’s discovery meant Ben was warier about coming near Charlie afterwards. Whereas no Nick means Charlie is constantly on guard avoiding Ben)

Unquestionably Charlie still develops his eating disorder - and chances are it’s quicker and more severe than in canon, with all this extra crap going on.

The one bit of hope is that while it might take longer for other non-Nick people to notice his ED, I’m sure they would. Charlie still has a good support network, and someone – Tori, Tao, Elle, Isaac/Aled, Mr Ajayi – would pick up on it.

But still getting help, and his recovery process (especially around self-harm) would be much longer, and more painful given Nick was the one who first got through to Charlie and helped him talk to his parents.

And Tori and Nick were both the biggest supports for Charlie through it all – without Nick, poor Tori has so much more on her shoulders.

The events of Solitaire end up being even darker, as Nick/Charlie are basically the main bright spot in all that. So, you have an even sadder Charlie and Tori

When the air clears after an incredibly shitty few years you’d have a 16/17-year-old Charlie who is working on his ED, self-harm, and mental health, but bottom line is it’s a much more painful journey, and he’s probably more impacted by everything with Ben.

In terms of the wider friend group, probably the Paris Squad Charlie/Tao/Tara/Darcy/Aled-Isaac/Sahar unit still develops. Because Elle was really the one who connected the girls with the guys. So, at least Charlie would have that

But with wider popularity? Canonically he ends up Head Boy and is friendly with a lot of people. I’m thinking without joining the rugby team, expanding his social circle, and having Nick to build his confidence we’re seeing a more reserved version of Charlie. Maybe he’d just be like a prefect or something but not quite head boy?

So, by the end of high school you’ve got a recovering Charlie heading off to uni, but he’s carrying a lot of self-loathing and emotional scars that Nick chipped away at.

Nick

It feels like in the shorter-term Nick’s situation would be better than Charlie’s – but longer term everything goes to shit.

Initially not much would change – he’d play rugby, he’d have his friends who he doesn’t actually like but is accepted by, he’s in a group where he can never be fully himself

Basically, Nick is ok but he’s not happy – and not even fully aware of how ‘not-happy’ he is

Harry would still have pushed Tara & Nick together at his birthday and Tara might still have come out to him. But without Nick’s sexuality crisis or talking about his openly gay “probably-my-best-friend-right-now” I don’t think they would have connected so quickly

And he never would have been at the orchestra practice to see her again and plan lunch together, milkshake dates etc. So that means no befriending Tara/Darcy and not connecting with the Paris Squad

Things with Imogen would have developed in a similar way: chances are peak peer-pressured Nick would still be bulldozed into going on their date, but without his relationship with Charlie to enable him to cancel, you’re looking at it being dragged out way longer - it’s a question of how many dates they go on before Nick calls things off

Yeah, he would have stopped before they actually became boyfriend/girlfriend, but it’s still a much stickier situation all round and one that leaves him more alienated

Then he’d still go on the Paris trip but probably ends up rooming with Harry and co. so much less fun all round

On the friend’s front – he’d still have Sai/Otis-Omar/Christian, but in canon it seems like their friendship deepened when Nick got together with Charlie, and a line was drawn over who Nick’s true friends were?? Without that happening, their friendship likely stays more surface level and shallow

Similarly, I’m not seeing a Charlie-less version of Nick having the confidence to confront Stéphane and David

Coming out as bi, having Charlie to confide in about his feelings, and just generally being able to be more himself – all that contributed to Nick calling both of them out on their shit. Without those circumstances, you’ve got a more people-pleasing Nick who pushes his own feelings down, so nothing real gets addressed and both relationships remain toxic and distant.

Obviously the massive, massive question is when and how Nick has his “full-on gay crisis.” And that’s kind of impossible to say. It could still be at Truham over another guy, or might not be until after school (maybe at uni)

There are a hundred ways that could go – but I think the key thing is that without Charlie, the chances are Nick’s sexuality journey wouldn’t be nearly as positive or healthy. (Honestly, it’s often missed just how supportive and essential Charlie was through it all, and how wonderful it was that Nick got such a sweet first (only) boyfriend).

Also remember, Charlie is the only out guy at Truham – if Nick falls for someone else at school then they’re either straight or closeted, and Nick is hit with feelings that he has to deal with on his own

There’s no Charlie to make the first move, no Charlie to hold Nick while he’s breaking down, no Charlie to tell him it’s ok to figure things out, no Paris Squad to provide queer community, no Tara/Darcy to talk to. It’s Nick alone in his room with BuzzFeed quizzes and articles on conversion therapy

Luckily he does still have Sarah and he might confide in her at an earlier point than in canon, but in terms of actual friends to talk to? ☹

Again, as with Charlie, Nick would eventually be ok. He’d figure it out – but it would be a hell of a lot of lonelier, and he’d probably never come out or act on anything while still at Truham

If his sexuality crisis happened post-school (likely uni) …possibly that would be better?? Uni is less of a cesspool, he wouldn’t be as trapped with people like Harry, and could at least connect with LGBTQI+ groups on campus etc. But on the flipside, it’s a Nick whose had years more of repressing his true self so there would be more to untangle

Overall, whether he’s realised he’s bi or not, by the end of school you’re left with Nick who is doing fine enough and seems content, but is much less anchored in himself, represses important parts of who he is, and lacks a real, close community

Idk, what other people think. This is all assuming that Nick and Charlie don’t meet later during school (e.g., if Nick reached out to the collection of queer students at Truham during his bi crisis).

But basically, all that long ramble was saying that a Nick and Charlie without each other is a very sad thing to think about, and they’re 100% a couple who make each other better, happier versions of themselves <3
