* Next Advisory Committee Meeting: Monday, March 25, 5:30pm

Our next advisory committee meeting will take place on Monday, March 25 at 5:30pm on Zoom. Please note we are meeting half an hour earlier than usual. Please contact us for the login information. We will be discussing our agenda for 2024. Hope you can make it!

* Curtis Cofield Estates Groundbreaking Ceremony, March 28

In November 2023, the 16 Miller Street property was formally sub-divided and the eastern portion fully transferred to the private development group, New Haven Housing Company LLC, and work on the development has finally begun. Read more in this New Haven Independent article. The official groundbreaking ceremony originally scheduled for last month has been rescheduled to March 28. Please RSVP to [email protected]. 

Congratulations to WRSHIP on their perseverance in seeing this project through to its final phase, and we hope to see you at the groundbreaking. [Invitation attached.]

* First Work-Day of the Season, April 18, 9am

Our first work-day of 2024 on Thursday, April 18 coincides with the Albertus Magnus College Day of Service and we will have several volunteers who are faculty, staff and students at Albertus. Please note this is a Thursday, not our usual work-day though in case of inclement weather, we will meet at our usual time on Friday.  Let us know if you are able to come for some or all of the time, or just show up!

* Donations to the Peace Garden for Gardening Equipment and Supplies

We have not actively solicited donations for the Peace Garden other than in-kind donations but if you would like to make a monetary donation to defray the cost of gardening supplies, we now have formal permission from the Peace Commission to accept donations using the Commission as our fiscal sponsor. Please contact us for details.

February 2024 News: Exciting Shoreline Greenway Trail News; State Street Re-Design & Phase IV Updates; CT Trail Census; Rock to Rock

Dear Friend of the Farmington Canal Greenway,

We wanted to wish you a happy (almost-) springtime and provide you with a few important updates:

* Shoreline Greenway Trail Information Session, February 29, 6pm (Virtual)

The City of New Haven is hosting a public meeting on Thursday, February 29th to discuss plans for the New Haven portion of the Shoreline Greenway Trail, which the City of New Haven has received $9 million since December 2022 to complete. It will connect the current terminus of the Shoreline Greenway Trail in East Haven with the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail and East Coast Greenway in the Long Wharf area. This is a big deal for regional trail connectivity and we are very excited about the project. There will also be an upcoming opportunity to walk (or bike) the future route of the SGT in New Haven, see below.

* Walk the Route of the Future Shoreline Greenway Trail Extension in New Haven, March 23, 9:30am

The walk will be led by longtime advocate of a harborside trail, Chris Ozyck, along with Aaron Goode of NHFFCG and the Bioregional Group and Dan Buckley, Matt Lieber, and Doug Hausladen from the Shoreline Greenway Trail organization.

The walk will begin at Lighthouse Point Park at 9:30am. There will be an option for people wishing to do a shorter walk to join the group later at Eastshore Park. More details TBA.

* State Street Re-Design Project Breaks Ground 

This month ground was officially broken on the long-awaited State Street re-design and road diet project. This is part of a larger project that will include the pedestrianization of the entire east side of the State Street median, which will then serve as the route of the Farmington Canal and East Coast Greenway as these greenways traverse downtown New Haven. (More background here.) We strongly support this project which will have positive impacts on traffic safety and positive synergies with the Farmington Canal and regional trail connectivity more broadly.

* Phase IV Construction Update - Almost Finished!

* Rock to Rock Earth Day Ride, April 27

New Haven’s premier environmental fundraising event, Rock to Rock, is celebrating its 16th Annual event on April 27 and registration is now open! Pick from one of six thrilling routes: 2 family rides (1-mile flat, 5-mile-summit); 12-mile; 20-mile; 40-mile; and the metric century, plus park walks! All rides will begin and end in East Rock Park (College Woods) where there is a Kids Bike Rodeo and a Green Fair with live music and food carts.

After you register, you get to choose which Rock to Rock partner organization you want to support. Please consider selecting our partners Farmington Canal Rail-to-Trail Association or Community Placemaking and Engagement Network (CPEN) as one of the organizations you are supporting. Thank you!

* CT Trail Census - Get Involved with this Awesome Data Project!

We are really glad to be participating in the CT Trail Census again this year, as we have since 2017. Participating in this research project provides us really valuable data about trail usage in New Haven and across the state. Last year our infrared counters showed that there were over 150,000 trips taken on the trail in New Haven, and the trendline continues to go up, up, up! We need help this year with collecting manual count forms that enable us to calibrate our infrared sensors. Please contact us if you are interested in helping out with this fascinating and useful project – we really need help completing some manual counts to make sure our infrared counter is calibrated correctly!

2. Where do you get your fic ideas?

Nowhere really specific, my brain just tends to chew through a lot of stuff and then eventually spit something out. Most of my ideas don't happen when I'm consciously trying to think of something its just 'thinking about kenjaku hmm chew chew chew ah if they took over Satoru's mothers body would that be fucked up or what, aight ill write that next'. My brain is like a hyperactive dog, if I don't give it things to play with it gets unhappy and understimulated. I also really love to pull things apart like Gang au came to be because of an exchange prompt but Gang AU Series tm came to be cuz i was like 'ok i wrote these boys, they are fun, i wanna pull them to pieces to see what exactly makes them tick.' This is the reason why i also like aus, it's all about experimenting, 'if i put x character in y situation' what would they do.'

And if all else fails like a good bunch of my phone notes are focused on just storing random ass ideas and one liners my brain spits out for a rainy day.

22. Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process?  How do you come up with titles?

I usually come up with titles early during the writing process, i said this before but if im on ao3 thinking what to put into the title box minutes before im about to post, i probably dont like the fic that much 😬. It's sorta like naming pets, isnt it, like you look at it and you are like, ah yes thats steve, just looks like a steve. Never ask me to name a pet ok. And as i said, my brain tends to spit out one liners all the damn time so once again i have a pile of titles just waiting to be used, either fully or just their bits. Here's my titles folder

Hope you are enjoying the holidays. I wanted to let you know a few things:

* Next Advisory Committee Meeting: Monday, January 29, 6pm

We will not meet in December due to the holidays. Our next advisory committee meeting will take place on Monday, January 29 at 6pm on Zoom. The Zoom information is at the end of this email. Hope you can make it!

* Housing Development at 16 Miller Street - Construction Has Finally Begun

As of late November, the property was formally sub-divided and the eastern portion fully transferred to the private development group, New Haven Housing Company LLC, and work on the development has finally begun. Read more in this New Haven Independent article. If you would like to comment on the article in support of the development while mentioning the synergy between the development and the Peace Garden, and the mutual desire for calmer traffic around the development area, that would be a nice gesture and reminder to the public of our shared goals. Congratulations to WRSHIP on their perseverance in seeing this project through to its final phase.

* Work-Days Paused Until the Spring

Our last work-day for this year was December 15. We were able to successfully fulfill our goal of spreading all the pine mulch that we recently received from URI. That will help to keep the weeds down until spring. Thanks to Frank Panzarella, Paul Bloom, Frank Cochran, and all our other regular workers. We will resume our work-days in April. Look forward to more gardening with this great team in the spring!
