Next Generation Aircrew Protection team conducts B-1 vapor purge testing
Nov. 20, 2023
DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --
The Next Generation Aircrew Protection team conducted the last set of vapor purge testing on the B-1B Lancer at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, November 7.
Comprised of six organizations from the Air Force and civilian sector, the NGAP team focused on purge times for the B-1B in the event of an airborne chemical attack.
During testing, a vapor simulant known as methyl salicylate, or wintergreen oil, was injected into the aircraft. Sensors placed inside the cockpit measured how long it took for the vapor to be purged during flight.
“Ultimately, the goal of this testing was to investigate and define how long it takes an aircraft to reduce a chemical concentration in the crew areas to levels where the crew can safely remove their protective gear,” said Dr. Richard Salisbury, 711th Human Performance Wing chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear analyst. “This research is important because we need to understand how long it takes to get back into optimal fighting conditions and inform commanders.”
The NGAP team lays the groundwork for future CBRN protective gear while assisting aircrews in the present using the data collected from testing. The team analyzes the purge times on each aircraft and creates data sets showcasing the vapor concentrations at different times during flight. This allows them to find the safest time for aircrew to remove any protective gear and continue flying after an attack.
“Without this testing and the subsequent data, the B-1B aircrew would be required to wear full chemical gear throughout the duration of a mission,” said Lt. Col. Dane Kidman, 337th Test and Evaluation Squadron director of operations. “B-1B sorties can last up to 30 hours during contingency operations, and with this data in hand, the aircrew can now remove CBRN equipment safely in flight which increases aircrew endurance. This will ultimately give the Air Force the ability to employ the B-1B in locations susceptible to chemical weapon attacks with lowered risk to the mission because the data provided gives the aircrew those tools for survival.”
Prior to the B-1B test event at Dyess, testing was conducted on the A-10 Thunderbolt II, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-22 Raptor and C-130J Super Hercules and will continue onto the B-52 Stratofortress next.
“One of the points of this effort is to ensure Air Force aircrews are able to operate and execute their mission in any scenario and that includes CBRN,” said 1st Lt. Gunnar Kral, Air Force CBRN Defense Systems Branch lead engineer for joint aircrew protection. “The NGAP program is coming along with a lot of great results, executing a lot of tests at a high frequency. The work done by the team is extremely important and, while we hope it won’t be used, it is 100% relevant in today's environment.”

Nadia Oxford, a writer for Gamezebo gave SimplePlanes a 4/5 for its realistic flight challenges, sandbox mode and the amount of building options. The biggest issue critics had was the process of building. SimplePlanes received 'mixed or average' reviews, according to Metacritic, where it garnered a score of 67/100. The challenges involve short tutorial-type activities (such as the 'take-off tutorial' and the 'landing tutorial') but can get more advanced with missions (such as 'SAM Evasion' (a 4 stage level which gets increasingly difficult) and 'Trench Run' (a race through a canyon-like area on the game map) > There are also weapons (bombs, wing guns and miniguns, missiles, rockets and torpedoes) in the game for the player to use on their creations. SimplePlanes contains challenges which the player can do. The game also gives players the ability to build cars, boats, trains and mechanical objects. Each island has a unique name, such as Maywar, Krakabola, Snowstone or Wright. The five islands each provide a different experience to the player, with interactive targets. When the creation or build is finished, the player can fly/drive/sail it around the map which contains 5 different islands with unique features, (4 on IOS or Android) and/or upload it to the SimplePlanes website. Planes (or other creations) created by the community can also be downloaded from the website. In SimplePlanes the player is given the freedom of building anything they want to create using the materials and objects provided, and players can additionally use XML modifications on their creation.

Since I'm on Mac, Finder tells me to select an application to install the.spmod file into, and it won't let me select Simpleplanes. I haven't installed any mods yet, and I'm trying to install overload. The specifics of aerodynamics might be a stretch for most high school physics classes, but a flight simulator and the prospect of video gaming in class might be enough to hook some kids into getting interested in force vectors, at the very least.įor engineering-flavored physics projects or engineering elective classes, SimplePlanes is a great way to experiment with prototyping and design principles without the mess and material overhead. When discussing centers of mass and motion - and lift, drag, and three-dimensional force generally - you can include this app for some hands-on practice, especially if live demonstrations aren't practical for some reason. You'll need to pair SimplePlanes with solid lessons that dive into the mathematics and dynamic systems at play here.

hawksweek2020 - Day 3: Crossover
@hawksweek2020 ___ Phoenix Drifting (or: it’s Pacific Rim time, my dudes) „I just don’t think this is a good idea.” Toshinori Yagi looked tired. That was really the only adjective needed to describe the man, and maybe the only one that was appropriate. Gone was the hero millions of people had watched on tv and cheered on. There was only this skeleton of a man who looked like a stiff breeze could knock him over.  “How will we know if we don’t give it a try?” said Keigo’s handler, calm and rational as always.  Yagi just shook his head with a long, drawn-out sigh. “I’ve drifted with Enji enough times to know what he’s like. And I can only assume it would be even more difficult now, after…” He trailed off, but no one in the room actually needed him to finish the sentence. “Assigning him a new recruit as a partner, and someone he’s never even met?”
But they had met, Keigo almost wanted to protest. He bit his tongue on the basis that there was no way Enji Todoroki would ever even remember the tiny brat he’d saved that day. Or that he’d recognize the young man he’d grown into.  “The alternative would be him drifting with his son, you are aware of that?” the commission president pointed out, one perfectly shaped brow raised. Keigo sometimes wondered when she found time to do that. The world was sort of ending every couple weeks, and yet there were people who would just… sit down and have their eyebrows plucked.  “Natsuo is a medic. He’s not a pilot,” Kayama said from where she was leaning forward on crossed arms, a tiny crease between her eyes.  Keigo’s handler paused. “Oh, no. I’m talking about Shouto.”  “Absolutely not.” It was the first time Aizawa had spoken since they’d opened this discussion. Keigo had been sure the man had dozed off at some point, but apparently, he’d been listening the entire time. Stupid, of course he had been. Never underestimate people, especially those that you know are skilled.  “We’re not putting a kid in a Jaeger. He’d be ready, skill-wise, but he’s still a teenager.”  “Todoroki specifically requested for his son to be partnered up with him,” the president said, unmoved. “He’s been training for this purpose alone. If Takami doesn’t work out, Shouto would be our fallback plan.”  Aizawa’s glare was terrifying enough that Keigo wouldn’t have been surprised if someone was about to drop dead. “Takami’s barely more than a kid himself!” He gestured at Keigo, who couldn’t help but straighten up, making a low noise of offense in his throat. “I’m old enough to fight! I’m old enough to drift. My simulator scores are better than All Might’s ever were. I’m ready.”  Aizawa scoffed. “Simulator scores hold nothing against a real fight, kid.” Though his glare wasn’t as prominent looking directly at Keigo. Seemed like his anger was directed at the commission. Which, understandable and Keigo could relate. But they knew what they were doing. He’d been trained for only this since he’d been a tiny kid. He knew he could do this.  “They might not even be compatible,” Yagi said, almost placating, “Maybe we’re arguing for nothing. You know what Enji is like. Him and Takami don’t seem like a very good matchup at first glance.”  “Enji wasn’t a good matchup with Touya, either, but he pushed through anyway. And look what happened,” Aizawa replied darkly. There was a ripple of tension, and then the dark-haired pilot stood from his chair. “It’s not like we can stop you from doing what you want anyway. I’m just putting it on the record that I was against this.” He paused. “No offense, kid.” And stalked off.  Keigo didn’t… think he was offended. Was he?
__ The thing was, despite spending the majority of his life training to be the perfect Jaeger pilot, despite having honed his reflexes and his tactical thinking and his ability to make split-second decisions, Keigo had never actually seen a Jaeger up close. When he’d been saved by Enji Todoroki – callsign “Endeavor” – as a child, that had been before the Jaeger program had really been a thing. Or at least not in the public eye. No, Enji Todoroki had been a special ops agent at the time he’d blown the criminal operation Keigo’s parents had been a part of, and his fame had only come about a year later when the first Jaeger – Golden Inferno – had been revealed. Keigo had known from that moment on that he wanted to be a pilot, and he’d worked hard to get to his goal, until he’d been picked up by the commission’s scouts when he’d been eight years old.
So, no experience with real Jaegers. Only the training facility and the simulations.  He really, really couldn’t be blamed for sneaking up onto the walkway to take a look. Surely with all the young recruits living here, this was something that happened regularly. Why shouldn’t Keigo be allowed to do the same? He was about to step into one of these soon enough, if he proved to be compatible with Endeavor.  There was currently only one active Jaeger in this Shatterdome, along with two more being kept ready for pilots. They desperately needed another team out there to help against the kaiju attacks that had just been stacking up, and that was why Keigo was here.  He felt… kind of inadequate for the task next to the Jaegers though. They were so much bigger than he’d been able to even imagine.  Even stood on the walkway, at eye level, Keigo was suddenly and entirely aware of how tiny he was. How tiny he was compared to one of the kaiju, too. Actually piloting a Jaeger had to be quite something if it made you feel strong enough to take on those monsters.  “Do you have authorization to be here?” That voice… Keigo turned his head with an easy smile, and threw a lazy salute at the man who technically outranked him. For now. And, hey, even if they teamed up, Endeavor would always have seniority over him.  “No, sir, but that’ll change come tomorrow,” he chirped, dropping his hand again. Endeavor was frowning at him, but as far as Keigo could tell, he was always frowning. “… Takami, right?”  Keigo nodded, wondering if Endeavor remembered his parents at all, or if that had just been one case in a long line of forgettable ones.  If he did remember, Endeavor wasn’t showing any signs of it. Instead, he stepped up beside Keigo, leaning his arms onto the railing of the walkway as he peered up at the Jaeger in front of them. This one was a newer model, the finishing touches were still being worked out, and the colors were muted and grey. Keigo thought she would look beautiful in red and gold.  “Do you trust yourself to handle her?” Endeavor asked after a moment. Blunt and to the point. Keigo kind of appreciated that.  “I’m a quick learner, and a great pilot,” he replied, “And I’ll have an experienced partner to show me the ropes.”  Endeavor turned his steely eyes on him. “I’m not here to pick up your slack.”  Keigo raised his hands in a placating gesture. “Oh, I promise you won’t have to! I know what’s at stake here, and I’m ready.”  That got him a nod. Endeavor turned back to the Jaeger. “… she has booster jets on her back, and she was built lighter than any previous models. She’ll be the first Jaeger with the ability to fly.”  Keigo had heard that much. He knew it’d be more of a hover, but that they were working on full flight and would be modifying her when there were no immediate fights to be won. He leaned his elbow on the railing and rested his head on his palm. “Got any name ideas yet?”  Endeavor was silent for a while. Maybe he didn’t care for frivolous things like names. He seemed entirely stoic, just like on tv, and in the one memory Keigo had of meeting him. “… Phoenix,” Endeavor finally said, voice quiet but still clearly audible in the relative quiet of the hangar this late.  “I…” Keigo loved it. It was perfect. He could already imagine the accents of red in an almost feather like pattern, and the Jaeger had flames, too, because it had been built with Endeavor’s preferred fighting style in mind. “… Rising Phoenix?” he suggested.  He could feel Endeavor’s eyes on his face, scrutinizing, but he was too busy staring up at their baby. “… if you can keep up with me in the drift, we can name her that.”  “Oh, them be fightin’ words,” Keigo murmured, and he couldn’t help but smirk. __ Their compatibility was evaluated within a single fight the next day. As soon as Keigo went in for his first blow, he could almost physically sense something connecting them. As fast as he was, Endeavor blocked every single one of his attacks as if he’d known exactly where Keigo was going to move.  And in turn, Keigo managed to dodge every one of his opponent’s slower, more forceful blows. It wasn’t like sparring with other recruits, or with his trainers. It was… lighter, like his mind didn’t have to be constantly running, his thoughts fading to a pleasant humming in the background.  When they parted, Endeavor was smiling.  Keigo returned his expression.  And they were deemed ready to drift only an hour after that.
__ They had an audience, Keigo knew. Everyone was anticipating a successful drift, and everyone was worried what would happen if it didn’t work out. No pressure. Keigo felt good about this, about himself. They could do this. Right? It didn’t matter that Endeavor had so many years on him, that he’d lived through what had happened to his first and second co-pilot, that their traumatic memories were probably about to mix up and create an incredibly explosive cocktail… Keigo took a breath and exhaled slowly.  He needed to focus on his surroundings. The feeling of the suit against his skin, the lights of the cockpit, the voices in his ear.  “Takami.”  Keigo jerked his head over towards Endeavor, who was standing calm and seemingly ready for the challenge ahead. “Yeah?”  Endeavor frowned at him. “Don’t think too much. It’ll only distract me.”  “Roger that,” Keigo murmured. Because that was so easy. Damn, what if this didn’t go right? Then they would lose so much more time trying to find a suitable copilot for Endeavor, and one for Keigo, too. This needed to work. It had to.  “Initiating neural handshake,” said a voice that Keigo was too nervous to assign to any one of the people he’d just met yesterday. “3…2…1.”  He was standing over an empty hospital bed, the sheets still mussed up from the body that had been in it only minutes ago. “It was my fault,” he murmured, fists clenched at his sides. A hand touched his shoulder. “Enji…” He whipped around and glared down at Rei, and she shrunk back from the look on his face.  He was twelve years old and had just broken a bone for the first time. He lay on the mat in the training hall, trying desperately not to cry as he clutched his arm. “We’re not finished, Hawks,” said the trainer coolly, “You won’t be able to take breaks when you’re in a Jaeger. You’ll have to keep fighting with broken bones. Now, get up and use your other arm.”  He was holding onto a gun, heavy and comforting in his hands, and leading his men down a darkened corridor.  He was in his bedroom with his father sneering down at him. “I know you’ve been stealing from me, little brat. Using my own teachings against me, are you?”  He gave his men a hand sign to swarm out as he pushed through the next door on his own.  He cowered from his father’s wrath, tiny body shaking. “N-no! No, I haven’t! I haven’t!” He’d taken food, but that wasn’t… he’d needed it so bad… he’d been so hungry… “D-Dad, please, I promise, please don’t-“  “Dad, please!” Touya was backing away from him with tears in his eyes and bruises on his face. “I’m tired, it hurts. Can we stop now? Can we please stop?”  “Don’t hurt me!”  “You promised we could stop if I did well in this one!”  “… losing connection…” “… unstable…” “… rabbit…”  Touya went up in flames before his very eyes, the entire cockpit was on fire, and he was burning, too, but he didn’t even feel it in his desperate attempt to rip himself away from the controls and get to his son. “Dad!”  The door to his bedroom was kicked open, splinters of wood sent flying as a broad man dressed in black pushed his way inside. “Step away from the child.”  He looked down at the little boy curled up on the ground, trying to make himself small. God, he looked so much like Touya like this, so scared. Enji looked back up at the man he’d come here for. At Takami.  Keigo looked up at his savior, at the gun in his hands. He scrambled to his feet and hit behind the stranger’s legs, clinging to him as if he was bound to disappear any moment.  Enji’s grip on the gun was unwavering.  “Don’t let him hurt me… please don’t let him,” Keigo whimpered.  “I won’t,” Enji replied.  Keigo held on tighter.  “… stabilizing…” “… fuck, that was close.”  The vividness of the memory began to fade, only bits and pieces fluttering through their joined minds now.  Seeing the man who had saved him on tv. Forming the word ‘Endeavor’ on his lips for the first time, in awe. Shouto, two years old, putting another block on his tower and clapping his hands. Walking into his new home at the Commission headquarters for the first time. Being given his uniform. Toshinori smiling at him at they stood in front of ‘Golden Inferno’ together for the first time. Toshinori on the floor and coughing up blood. His mom yelling at his dad’s friends, pointing a gun at whichever one moved closer to her. Holding Rei’s hand in the park. Passing his first piloting test with flying colors. Fuyumi’s awe as she saw his Jaeger the first time. The name ‘Hawks’ given to him by another recruit. Burn scars running along his body, but none hurt as bad as knowing Touya was gone. Pickpocketing strangers on the street and trying to buy food with the money before he was expected back. Giving Natsuo a piggyback ride. Shooting a gun in the training range. Facing down a kaiju with his partner at his side.  Keigo raised his hand. Enji did the same. They brought their fists together.  “Neural handshake initiated.”  The memories stopped. The connection flowed freely between them, almost like a lazy stream of consciousness.  Keigo gave Enji a playful, mental nudge. Enji huffed on his side of the cockpit.  “Let’s show these kaiju who’s boss, eh?” Keigo asked, both with his mind and out loud.  He could feel determination, and amusement, and relief. “I’ll show you how it’s done.” Hawks, Enji thought, I won’t let you down.  Keigo… Hawks smiled and leaned into their connection, allowing himself to feel the exhilaration of it all. “We’re gonna kick some ass.”  He mimicked an explosion with his fist, and Rising Phoenix did the same.

It's not about glamour it’s about guts.

1 | Solo | Form my childhood I was attracted to aeroplanes of all kinds, largely due to family. My Grandfather was US Navy Pilot shot down over Vietnam.
My father was an Aviator with USAF and has flown B-52 Stratofortress and presently a successful airlines company CEO and Chairman. Now it was my turn. They say Fighter Pilots are not born, they are built and this is place where they make them Naval Air Station Kingsville
The Advanced flight training starts with a 900 page manual of F/A 18 he first Fighter Jet I will qualify on. Here we have already done our Introductory flight screening (IFS)
and Primary flight training. It also includes Centrifuge tests which simulates the conditions of stress and gravity inside fighter aircraft. The tighter the turn, harder the gravity pushes on him,  which in technically called pulling Gs. And fighter jets do it more brutally than any machine on earth At 2G a 200 pound man can easily feel twice his weight. Take it upto 5g and the flight suit feels like 1000 pounds of lead. Once you start pulling Gs its like bench pressing your chest, everything is pulling down and its very hard to breathe. Under G load blood drains from the head and pools in the legs leading to tunnel vision or verse G lock i.e G induced loss of consciousness. Survival depends on mastering the Anti G Straining Manoeuvre, the trick is - tense the leg and stomach muscle so as to prevent the blood from hitting south.  And to breathe in short quick burst. Abs tight, but tight and lift yourself from the seat. The G suite that I was introduced too basically had bladders in thigh muscle and abdomen which inflate under G forces at varying pressure to squish your lower extremities to keep the blood in your head. But for centrifuge test, the suit will not inflate, I need to prove that I can sustain high G forces completely on my own. I had to complete a series of tests culminating in 8Gs for 15 long seconds. My turn I witnessed the heavy pressure and pull, it was difficult to breathe but I heard be “aggressive.. be aggressive” clearly and altered my pace likewise. When I finished it I was already a little white but I passed it. Good Stuff, the instructor commented. Two veteran pilots lost the test. One at 8 seconds and the most experience at 14 seconds. So being a pilot is no guarantee you will qualify. So Mike lost by just one second, its harsh but it would be fatal in F/A 18  rushing towards ground at hundreds of miles an hour. It took Mike 3 seconds to recover but that threes seconds is the time a fighter pilot does not have, especially if he supersonic. It could mean entering in enemy territory, getting shot by sam for failure to evade, or crashing. None of which is acceptable. Mike will have another shot at this test. I was in for my next challenge. The Seat from hell. The Fighter pilot’s ticket to survival. In a F/A 18  it is Martin-Baker Mk.14 NACES (Naval Aircrew Ejection Seat ). These seats are fitted in 200 fixed-wing and rotary types with the most recent being the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II programme.
A pilot is snared in belts and buckles, four straps for the leg another six for the torso, pin a pilot to the seat during violent manoeuvres. They also prevent him from being torn apart if he has to eject. The Ejection seat may be a pilot’s lifeline but it will be most violent and terrifying rescue imaginable. Pilot and seat literally explode out of airplane, when they are clear, another charge blows the seat belts and deploys the parachute. It all happens in just two seconds. One of my greatest fears was having to parachute in open waters and its is critical to know exactly what to do in first few seconds after hitting the war. So as test I had get free from the harness after been thrown into Olympic pool before I get to pulled to the pool. Then get out from under the canopy before it pulls me under.
It was easy in the pool but imagine it in freezing Atlantic water. At this point everything I do is making life and death decisions automatic. After learning to survive and passing this phase and before spending time in a real cockpit of F/A 18 I will have to spend hours in simulator. Instructors throwing emergency after emergency, while I struggle to keep up, but eventually these procedures will be seared into my brain. While others went for Lunch one day I made a beeline for an open cockpit. I was going to save sitting in fighter aircraft for my first flight but there was too much to know. At the top of my list were critical emergencies that require a pilot to react instantly, the so called RED PAGES. In a machine as complex as F/A 18,  failures are inevitable. Red Pages emergencies are inherently fatal. Things like Engine Fire that will cripple the jet; A fuel leak, Landing gear failure or a cockpit that suddenly fills with smoke, blinding the Pilot. Better to know where the switch is, if a lot has to think before acting in these situations, he will be hole in ground before he remembers the answer because if you are in supersonic fighter the question is not if the trouble will find you but when. In a life of fighter pilot there are no secrets, even if there is, there is always a witness. Every time a fighter aircraft leaves the ground the mission is tapped. The Heads up Display or HUD shows the pilot things like Speed, Altitude and G Forces. Everything a pilot sees is recorded and everything he says. Also my ride I discovered I had a companion, a computer one, and soon discovered that fighter pilots call it bitching Betty. More common are the troubles that a pilot runs into when he pushes the jet too far. The same traits that make fighter jets agile and manoeuvrable also make them extremely twitchy   When they are driven to the limit. Once the plane looses control it will not be safe to control it until it reaches certain speed in situation where the plane does not reach that speed, all a pilot can do is take hands off the controls and wait, it’s ultimate faith and belief in a machine. The instructor talking about his experience when he recovered 2000 ft above ground and 3 seconds from oblivion. His HUD was a case study. This is the stuff we live for. Living life on the edge. Anyone can shoot bullets, but only few can call themfselves fighter pilots. The first test was pushing all of us Aviators to the limit. Last minute brushing up of details, sleep deprivation, stress. Unlike other exams in this exam the pass mark is 100%. For instructors demanding perfection is not unreasonable, it’s personal. After having cleared the test and surfing three weeks, it was time for some celebrations No G suites today, instead, I was siting up for our official welcoming party. Being a fighter pilot isn’t a job, It’s Life Walking through Air Worthiness check of F/A 18, every Pilot must know by heart. There are 155 checks before one even climbs into cockpit. When you sign on to fly jets it means a life time of sacrifice. Suiting up for F/A 18, is like gearing up for super bowl, it makes everything else you have flown seem like training wheels. And it was about to happen the first flight in Fighter Aircraft, but first I had to prove I have memorised the external safety checks, all 155 of them. Covering Everything from mechanical to animal. Then there are another 194 cockpit checks. As I climbed up the cockpit ladder, I was feeling a soft breeze behind my neck, a feeling of something important about to happen, a feeling one cannot imagine. After 194 checks, I had to 76 more checks before I even started the engine. And starting the engines involves 45 more, I felt I could get old waiting around for this. An Experienced Fighter pilot can knock off the whole work in under 5 minutes. Student Naval Aviators like me usually take three quarters of an hour. I took 38 minutes on my first and It was situation where I could not afford to make a mistake. My instructor in back seat is watching like a hawk. And Upfront the Heads Up Display (HUD) tape is recording every move I make and everything I say. “ All Set, 222 Taking Off my” first ever Fighter Callsign on a Fighter Aircraft. “Show me your Stuff man” The Air Controller replied to my information.”  Pressing the throttle forward, this was the moment I have been waiting all my life. As the afterburners lit the tarmac up. “Nozzles Good , 100 Knots and takeoff”
“Good Job” The instructor sitting behind me said as the wheels left the tarmac. “All’s Up regain 220” Right away I was expected to master the basics. “I will try a roll” And I did.. Yeehaa..I could not control my excitement. “I’m gonna do one more.” My instructor just laughed. Rolls, Climbs, Stall Even though I was getting the most thrilling experience of my life, instructors were looking for discipline and level headed guy which is required in combat and it was just business for us. But at this stage, flying is an easy part, for an inexperienced pilot bringing an F/A 18 back to earth is the most dangerous and difficult part of the flight. For  44 years F/A 18 has proven its ability in combat theatres around the world. And it is dual engine plane, only experienced pilots gets to touch them and qualified ones get to fly them. It is whole lot different than F-16, but in hands a SNA  ( Naval Aviator) on windy day it can also be treacherous. On the HUD on the left was the E bracket which tells the pilot, plane’s angle on landing, how high the nose is, E bracket helps insure a smooth landing.  I landed a little harder than my instructor would have liked but I got it done without drama, and completed it successfully. After very flight there is a debriefing. This course is marathon and we athletes/ pilots have just begun our race. There are never enough serviceable jets and never enough time. One of the exercise I did was practise engine restart, the drill is straightforward, shutdown one engine, accelerate to 350 knots and relight it, at that speed air is driving the compressor like a windmill, so when the engine is reignited the turbines are moving fast enough to blow the heated air out of exhaust. If You fly too slow in this exercise, the hot air blast will be trapped and engine will overheat. Two cadets made a mistake, Mike was flying too slow so he had to do emergency landing with only one engine. The engine was unhinged and taken to sick bay for inspection, luckily for Mark, it did not suffer any damage. For Tim his missioned was cancelled as he dropped his ball pen into cockpit. That 10 pence plastic could jeopardise the entire flight safety, so the plane was rotunded till the pen was found. That means somebody else does not get to fly, due to Tim’s mistake. So around here we have rule, one pilot’s mistake is everyone’s lesson. Time for Solo flight, for pilots, they count their flying hours, for me this was hour one, minute one for a solo flight. “Alright Nose and Wheel Sten is up. I’m good to go” “Cleared to Take Off” Came the reply. That was what we had all prepared for Solo Sortie “EGT, Fuel Flow Nozzle, oil is good, Going to burner, Here we go Lift off” And I was wheels up in the climb “Gear flags up, 220” “Eat your heart out..this is fucking awesome”..I commented up in air. It was my first solo flight, at 20000 Feet. If anything goes wrong help I long far away. The Mission went smoothly I did all the patterns I had to complete and pulled in a little extra and landed safely. Right before Thunderstorms filled the sky. Flight Tradition Dictates that the a Pilot goes solo, he earns himself a callsign - a nickname that symbolises his identity. Squadron tradition demands a well stocked bar and well used gun barrel from nose of a jet. Getting a call sign is like Christening there it was “Hammer” and I had no say in it, and it was decided by mob rule by Instructors. Only in movies you get cool callusing like “Maverick” and “Iceman” here In this batch I was lucky.

Humans are Space Orcs “The Infection.”
Sorry this one is going to be a little longer than normal, but it is sort of relevant for the direction that I have decided to take. I am setting the groundwork for something pretty big, so I hope you can all enjoy. I hope to get out something a little smaller and easier the next one, so bare with me. Hope you like it.
He jolted upright frantically feeling around in the darkness for a light, anything, anything at all to stave off the feeling of dread. His frantic sweat-slicked fingers fumbled with the comm light on the wall before finally flicking on the interior bulbs bathing the room in a delicate blue glow. He sat up on the edge of the bed and took a long, shaky breath dropping his head into his hands. A soft whimper accompanied him, and he reached out with a hand to stroke the dog’s ears. Waffles sat on the bed beside him head lowered and cocked to the side making sure he was okay.
He couldn’t have been sure, maybe he was and maybe he wasn’t. His PTSD wasn’t so bad as it once had been, but every now and then, the dreams still plagued him. Though he could not remember the content he was still aware of the feelings of dread that had washed over him. An impending sense of doom. He took another deep breath and reached down to strap on his prosthetic. Perhaps a walk would calm him down, it was unlikely he would be getting to sleep again tonight.
 ***
Out in the hallway, the ships internal lights had been dimmed to simulate dusk in synchronicity with the circadian rhythms of the average human. The ship was still, despite the undoubted movement of the graveyard crew working to keep the ship through the night. He was unlikely to meet any of them at this hour as graveyard shift would consist of the operational minimum of crew members required to run the ship. As a class D-6 Battle Cruiser with a Warp Capable Alpha 1 engine the Harbinger required a two man bridge crew, five auxiliary and a twenty member team of engineers to operate…. A surprisingly low number truth be told as the crew numbers could level out well over 100.
By way of his late night wandering, he found himself down in the crew quarters….. He momentarily played with the idea of waking Sunny for the company against his still uneasy mind, but he quickly dismissed it. He couldn’t do that, perhaps he would find Krill, the Vrul had no need of sleep, though he wasn’t exactly psychologically supportive. Sure he would try to help, but he only knew what he read from textbooks, he wasn’t exactly intuitive. He sighed and backed himself against the wall. Waffles sat at his feet leaning her head against his human leg as he stared into space. Inside his stomach churned, butterflies rode up and down his throat, and he absently rocked from side to side trying to stave off the nervousness.
He tried to think of something else to distract himself from the fear. His thoughts crossing to the starborn Conn, so “lovingly’ known as convict. They had recently made efforts to bring him aboard the ship. The further they went out into unknown territory the more extreme and dangerous their work became, and despite Conn’s ability to survive in the most extreme of conditions, the vacuum of space, it was becoming increasingly dangerous, so the ingenious mechanics crew had rigged together a portable gravity field generator to fix the one problem that prohibited the starborn to enter the ship: the fact that his neck would likely snap and his own weight would crush his internal structures under the weight of gravity.
Someone had even managed to rig together a set of translation gloves, the kid that used to be used for translating sign language. It was relieving to know that soon he wouldn’t be the only one that Conn could incessantly annoy.
His stomach churned again, and with annoyance, he pushed himself away from the wall. Something felt so wrong, and of course deep down he knew that it was nothing, but that didn’t make the feeling any less real. WIth waffles at his heels, he continued his walk down the length of the ship staring up at the ceiling and just…. Thinking.
He turned a corner startled out of his revery as waffles began to growl. He turned to look at her with confusion and sudden worry. Waffles NEVER growled….. At least not on a silent ship in the dead of the night when there was nothing there.
 They are here.
Commander Vir nearly leapt out of his skin spinning in a tight circle as the whispered voice seemed to come from nowhere and everywhere all at once. Eyes moving wildly, his heart pounded in his chest, as he turned towards one of the dark service tunnels leading into the inner bowls of the ship, and there he saw it, ghostly white ribbons fluttering and scattering on a backdrop of darkness waving behind the skeletal white face and reflective black eyes. The starborn drifted from the darkness, his skeletal body so similar to a human but disproportionate enough to add an itching sense of horror.
“Get out of my head convict.” The commander snarled. The dog growled again, and he could hardly blame her.
 They are here.
Commander Vir ventured forward a step as the starborn drifted a little closer hands floating out to either side of him, gloves unused. He looked... wrong …. Somehow.
You feel it too, you feel it too human, you can feel it You Can feel it YOU CAN FEEL IT.
Commander Vir grabbed at the sides of his head in a futile effort to fight against the raising volume. Beside him the dog began to bark frantically.
 YOU CAN FEEL IT!
The starborn lurched forward from the darkness, and Commander Vir was just able to pull himself to the side as the starborn rushed past him. The dog stepped in front of him teeth pulled back in a rabid snarl. Commander Vir clutched his head as his mouth began to go dry.
 Oh no.
 “Commander!”

The frantic howling  of the dog had woken members of the crew who had rushed to his help. Krill arrived at about the same time the others were subduing the starborn. The dryness in his mouth slowly retreated and he relaxed as Krill came to his aid. The starborn was carted off to the infirmary unresponsive and cattonic. He rocked slowly back and forth in the air mouth open making an unnerving dry gurgling sound from the depth of his throat. As all this was happening a member of the night crew called him up to the bridge, and he went with some amount of confusion.
“Status?” He wondered walking onto the bridge and taking a seat in the Captain’s chair.
The navigation operator turned in his seat, “Short range radar in picking up multiple signals, sir. Too small to be asteroids, way to small, but there are….. Well there must be hundreds of them, and they’re just floating there sir. We already tried exterior hull cameras, but we’ve got nothing. Whatever they are, we can’t see them.”
“Give me a size estimation lieutenant.” He said turning in his chair to monitor the rest of the bridge crew at their stations.
“No bigger than two meeters sir, probably less than that, but there are hundreds of them.”
Commander Vir tapped his chin for a long moment of thought before, “Prep a raptor,  I’ll be down in five so we can get a closer look. Lieutenant, you have the chair.” With a swift turn, he twisted on his heels and made his way down to the docking bay.
 ***
By the time he reached Bay 1, the raptor was already in place. The bird was a rather clunky piece of equipment, but it had to be fitted with all the weapons and scientific equipment as one could argue was prudent. Commander Vir took a moment to suit up in one of the auxiliary rooms getting help from a crewmember to strap on the tight fitting space/flight suit, attached helmet, control enabled gloves, and vital monitoring systems that had become standard on the ship since Krill had arrived.
As he was strapping himself into the cockpit, he looked over to see Sunny and the other Drev running onto the floor alerted by the sudden commotion that had overtaken the ship. The cockpit sealed over him still allowing him a wide angled view of the bay doors before him. He reached up and pulled the straps into position about his body allowing them to auto auto adjust around his chest and arms.
He wrapped his hands around the ship’s controls and auto engaged the targeting, and navigations systems. Neon circles, vestors and numbers appeared on the inside of his visor as he powered up the engines spitting purple tinted blue fire from the two rear thrusters. The room cleared for his takeoff, and before he knew it, he shot off into the vacuum of space and it’s endless darkness. “Alright, lieutenant, load the location feed.” In response to his request, The screen in front of him lit up, highlighting what must have been at least 90 to 100 location vectors, but by his vision there didn’t seem to be anything there.
Granted this part of space was rather dark, thousands of miles from anything but an unusual formation of asteroid fields dominated by monolithic stones the size of small moons,. WIth one hand he toggled the acceleration and sped into the intervening space delicately avoiding the space debris with the delicate touch of a surgeon.
“I’m here lieutenant, but I don’t see anything.”
“How can you not captain, they….. Holy hell Commander, they’re all around you.”
“You mean the asteroids because yes, yes they are everywhere.”
 We see you.
Commander Vir froze where he sat wrecking the rotating engines around with a quick burst to pull himself to a stop. Hiis heat began to pound in his chest, his mouth went dry.
“Commander, commander what’s wrong. You’re pulse just spiked, and your blood pressure just shot up, are you ok.” that was Krill this time, but he was to frozen to respond bogged down as he was in a cold sweat
We see you hiding in there….. In skin meat sack you call a body. The voice reverberated in his head seeming to rattle through his bones with the power of a speaker system with the base turned up all the way.
His lips quivered as he looked around following the slowly drifting location vectors, but still unable to see anything, “I…. I don’t know what your talking about…. I’m not h-hiding.”
“Commander, repeat that would you, we didn’t quite catch it.”
Come out of there Deus and face us in your true form.
A line of sweat trickled down his spine, “Now I don’t know who you’re talking to, or what you’re talking about.” His hands slowly tightened around the joysticks as his trigger finger inched towards the trigger on the forward guns.
 LIES!
He cried out in pain at the volume as his eye lurched out of focus. His ship was jogged to the side, something thudded against the hull, once twice than three times. He lifted his head shaking his vision... and screamed.
The creature stared back at him twisted and skeletal with charred brown and black skin, horribly long spidery fingers and an open mouth with chattering twisting teeth. It lurched its head towards the glass causing a thud to burst through the cockpit. Behind it strings of charred black fanned backwards into darkness.
WIth a frantic burst born of instinct, he jarred the acceleration and then maneuvered reverse thrusters at the last moment. Throwing himself against the harness, and the creature off into blackness. But he could see it now, fingers clutching around the side of the cockpit….. Hundreds of them.
 Come out Deus.
 Come to us
 Come with us
 Face us
 Coward
 We see you.
His head was beginning to grow light, his mouth was as dry as sandpaper, he felt as if he was about to fall out of himself. He gritted his teeth against the feeling begging his body not to give in, not to be overwhelmed as the sudden burst of telepathic voices threatened to send him into a wild convulsions.
He rotated the joystick to the left and forward sending them spinning diagonally into the dark. Bodies flew past the cockpit’s windscreen, as the pressure cuffs in the pant legs of his suit contracted to restrict blood from pooling in his legs.
 DEUS.
 His vision was fading.
“COMMANDER, commander, come in what’s happening.”
 “He’s going into convulsions.”
“Someone needs to help him NOW!”
 “I can’t, something’s blocking our systems.”
HE couldn’t move thousands of hands obscured his vision climbing and rolling on his windscreen. Face and eyes, and charred skin.
Calm your mind human, and I will help you.
“Conn?” The commander muttered turning his head groggily inside the cockpit. Even as he did something seemed to flow around his consciousness beating back the hundreds of clamoring voices.  Hurry, I cannot hold them back for long.
With a desperate jolt, he turned the raptor in another sharp series of spins careening over and around asteroids at one point slipping through a gap that left him only a foot or two to either side. Bodies flew in all directions. Hands grasped at the cockpit lit from the background by the light of distant, nebulae. He didn’t know where he was, didn’t know which was way up or which way was down, but he followed the vestors flying by instinct when those weren’t enough acutely aware of the war being fought around his mind.
 Conn Vs a hundred.
He broke from the asteroid field rocketing towards the ship with wild abandon. Fingers still clasped at the corners of his vision. He only had one chance, “OPEN THE BAY DOORS!” He yelled into the com, “NOW NOW NOW.” Somewhere, someone must have heard him, and the doors opened just as the raptor passed through, upside down.
He rotated the thrusters and gave a powerful backwards burst which dropped them to the ground and had them skidding across the floor. His head rattled and his body jolted as sparks went up in front of his vision. He was jolted back and forth. His head rattled inside his helmet. The raptor spun once, twice on its head and then came to a halt. Lights flashed red through the cracked, but not shattered, cockpit screen. He could hear frantic voices. The wind screen screeched and cracked, and then opened. He couldn’t move, suspended upside down as he was groggy and disoriented.
“Hold him steady, easy, there we go, now pull him out.” The release catch snapped open and he slid into a set of waiting arms. Through his disorientation he recognized the blue carapace.
“What in the hell are those things!”
 “SHIT.”
He turned his head slowly to the side looking past the trail of destruction he had left through the docking bay. Scattered along he floor, amidst the pieces of broken paneling were bodies. Charred and shrunken twitching and gurgling as they were slowly crushed to death by the weight of their own bodies.
“Lay him down. Someone help me get the helmet off.” A bright light was shown into his eyes and he squinted trying to push away whoever it was. Arms tightened around him.
 “Stay Still Commander.”
“Bridge team to docking bay, bridge team to docking bay we have a problem. THEY’RE CRAWLING EVERYWHERE, THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF THEM!” The entire crew was awake now, he could hear them, the panic and confusion at what was going on.
He tried to swat away the light again “Tell them to turn on the exterior hull gravity.”
 “Commander?”
 “Just do it.”
Inside his head, he felt it as Conn gave way. The voices flooded into his head, and not moments later everything had gone black. Outside a jolt ran through the hull of the ship, and the clinging infected starborn were dragged downwards crushed and choking against their own weight. Conn stopped his frantic twisting, and commander Vir’s seizure subsided.
The GA was alerted immediately, and samples were taken of the recovered, and now quarantined, corpses.
 Something was very, very wrong.
