[Note the inscription of her aristocratic name "Sylvia von Harden" on the inner cover of the cigarette box]

New Woman Fiction, Supernatural Femslash, and Reading Women's Writing: how useful is the ‘wave’ framework for forming histories of women’s political activism in modern Britain?
Abstract: While scholarship around women’s writing has grown significantly in recent years with the rise of gender studies, historical studies of women’s fiction as a form of political activism are still lacking. This essay aims to address this gap in the literature through critically evaluating the helpfulness of the wave framework when used to re-assess New Woman fiction of the 1890s and Supernatural femslash fanfiction of the 2020s as women’s political fiction, in particular reference to George Egerton’s short stories and 'Sapphicnatural' fanfiction about the character Jo Harvelle. Ultimately, I argue that using the wave structure as an analytical framework is an important academic exercise in re-evaluating our understanding of women’s writing, but should be employed alongside wider critiques of feminist historiography and literature.
i wrote an essay! about how sapphicnatural authors are following in the footsteps of the new woman feminist writers of of the 1890s! it's 3.1k and was originally written for a university assignment so is a little limited in scope - but full of interesting fandom studies as well as historical and literary analysis (if i may say so myself). a massive thank you to @kerryweaverlesbian for volunteering to edit this before i handed it in !! of course feel free to let me know what you think of it and, most importantly, enjoy!

About today's entry and this line:
"I believe we should have shocked the "New Woman" with our appetites."
New Woman refers to one of the early recognized feminist movements, and included women doing such shocking things as being financially independent, studying at universities, and bicycle riding. Therefore Mina and Lucy likely had what was seen as a 'feminine' tea as opposed to the radical feminist's tea - which means that it was likely not very filling.

Frances Benjamin Johnston
Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864–1952) was an early American photographer and photojournalist whose career lasted for almost half a century. She is most known for her portraits, images of southern architecture, and various photographic series featuring African Americans and Native Americans at the turn of the twentieth century. Perhaps her most famous work is her self-portrait as the liberated “New Woman”, with petticoats showing and a beer stein in hand. Johnston advocated for the role of women in the burgeoning art of photography. In 1897 the Ladies’ Home Journal published Johnston’s article “What a Woman Can Do With a Camera”, describing how to achieve artistic and financial success in photography as a profession. With Zaida Ben-Yusuf, Johnston co-curated an exhibition of photographs by twenty-eight women photographers at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. In 1899, Johnston was commissioned by Hollis Burke Frissell to photograph the buildings and students of the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in Hampton, Virginia in order to show the success of this primarily black institution. The resulting series — considered among her most important work — was displayed at The Exhibit of American Negroes of the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900. Her life partner was Mattie Edwards Hewitt, a photographer who specialised in architecture and with whom she established the “Johnston-Hewitt Studio” in New York City in 1913.
