I seem to be the only person who hates Jonathan Young's song Army of Tigers. Musically it's fine, but lyrically it's probably his worst song ever. I have hardly ever heard anything so hateful, arrogant, and suicidally stupid, and I seem to be the only person who recognizes how destructive its message is.
Army of Tigers, for those of you unaware, is a song about an old man living in an apocalyptic desert (my headcanon is that it's future Las Vegas) who decides to destroy the Sun with an army of tigers, clearly based on that one stupid meme about lions attacking the Sun at night (the Sun is still lit at night, idiots). The Old Man justifies his evil plot by blaming the Sun for "cataclysmic cancer", blinding kids, skin disease, burned crops, and dried rivers; he also uses a fair amount of religious language ("extinguish heaven's light") and outright sexism (the Sun is gendered as female). Eventually, after the first attempt of destroying the Sun by launching tigers at it with trebuchets fails because the Sun predictably incinerates the tigers, he succeeds by stacking them into a giant tiger the size of a star that cleaves the Sun in half with its claws, plunging the Solar System into eternal darkness.
People praise the song for showing something "awesome". People clamor to destroy the Sun because it's caused them personal discomfort. These people seem to forget that without the Sun driving photosynthesis and the water cycle, and keeping Earth warmer than the vacuum of space, they wouldn't be here at all. Ungrateful much?
It's really not a question of whether you could destroy the Sun with an army of tigers (The answer to which is "No", a trillion tigers is no match for a two octillion-ton star hot enough that solid matter gets reduced to plasma three million miles away from it without ever touching the surface. Also, that many tigers in one place would just collapse into a second star, tigers cannot survive the vacuum of space, a trebuchet is not powerful enough to launch a tiger past escape velocity, Earth doesn't have the resources to support a population of one trillion tigers (especially in a desert apocalypse), and if the world's a desert apocalypse wouldn't tigers have gone extinct a long time ago? I mean, they're endangered now, and the world isn't a giant desert.). The question people should ask is whether you should destroy the Sun with an army of tigers, the answer to which is also "No".
Here's what will happen now that the Old Man's plan has succeeded. The Sun's outer layers, no longer gravitationally bound to its core, are free to expand outwards and collide with Earth, bombarding it with sextillions of tons (for comparative purposes Earth weighs about six sextillion tons, so yeah, BIG number) of ionizing radiation (and for someone who hates the Sun for giving people cancer the Old Man is surprisingly fine with giving the entire WORLD cancer). After that artificial nova passes, Earth finds itself without very much light or warmth. Photosynthesis ceases. The ocean freezes solid. The part of the atmosphere that hasn't been blown off into space by the radiation also freezes solid as Earth's temperature drops by 500 degrees Fahrenheit. All life on Earth is dead within weeks. The old man is NOT a valiant hero, he's a delusional terrorist willing to sacrifice uncountable innocent lives just to satisfy a petty grudge with an inanimate object.
And why does he do this? Because the Old Man blames the Sun for the problems in his life. But fault requires intent, and intent requires thought, and the Sun, not being alive, therefore lacks all of these things (and yes, I know that the Sun has a face in the music video, shut up). In fact, all of the things that he blames the Sun for causing are actually the result of human error:
Increased incidence of skin cancer: the ozone layer protects us from the worst of the Sun's UV radiation. If cancer rates have increased, this implies that the ozone layer has weakened. This is only possible if previous generations released ozone-depleting gases into the atmosphere. The real cause of more skin cancer is therefore air pollution. (Note the use of the word "more".)
Crops burning: it's a common problem in agriculture that people keep trying to grow plants that aren't suited for the environment they've been planted in; take the almond groves in California, for example. If the crops are burning, then the Old Man is likely planting the wrong crops for a desert, and he likely wouldn't know what the right ones are because previous generations probably didn't tell him what the right ones were (and probably didn't bother looking for them either).
Rivers thinning: two-pronged issue here. First, global warming resulting in reduced mountain ice is a major reducer for river flow. Second, water overuse by previous generations. Remember those almonds from before? They use a LOT of water just to make a small number of seeds. From lawns to inefficient plumbing to incompetent agriculture, water overuse combined with global warming are the real causes of the rivers the Old Man lives near running dry. Not the Sun being a dick (which it cannot be because, again, it isn't alive).
Children going blind: the children in question probably just looked at the Sun directly despite being told not to by their parents. Notice how the Old Man's eyes get blacked out as an adult when they were perfectly normal when he was a child after staring at the Sun...almost as if he's gone blind to reality. Symbolism. Hm.
But the Old Man never once acknowledges that his ancestors could've had a hand in causing the mess that he currently lives in. Instead, he blames the Sun for causing it, because in American culture it's encouraged to hate what we don't understand rather than try to understand it, and it's encouraged to revere our ancestors as perfect pinnacles of wisdom rather than acknowledge they were human and thus prone to making mistakes. So the Old Man destroys something that he doesn't understand, even though it's something necessary for his survival, and brings about the end of the world as a result. (He also probably dies from the fuckton of radiation he released.)
I don't think Jonathan Young intended this song to be anything more than a stupid meme song. But this stupid meme song has a stupid message that people are going to take from it: blame personal misfortune on things you don't understand, and destroy those things rather than try find a different solution. Perhaps I'm reading too much into it, but hey, I'm autistic, reading too much into things is part of the deal. And it's personal for me, because the Old Man's rhetoric is eerily similar to the far-right's calls to repeal environmental regulations, an action that would directly create the desert world the Old Man lives in, because they don't understand the people who made them, and as a transfeminine atheist this song's message disturbs me in a way that it might not disturb others because it's unintentionally very similar to calls that the far-right makes to outright kill people like me, entirely because they refuse to understand us.
The song also just doesn't work for the vibe that Jonathan Young is trying to go for. Jetpack Race, another song on the album that Army of Tigers is part of, is about a man escaping his monotonous workplace to become a jetpack racer. It's my favorite original Jonathan Young song, and it works as a message of defeating oppression because the oppressor is an artificial human construct designed to exploit people. Another song on the album, Storm the Castle, is about taking down an evil king, and it works as a message of defeating oppression because the oppressor is a person (er, pig) who is directly hurting people for kicks. But Army of Tigers does NOT work as a message of defeating oppression because the "oppressor" is a natural phenomenon lacking consciousness. So instead of being a song about defeating oppression, it's a song about bringing about the end of the world because you're too proud to admit that your ancestors might've been idiots and instead blame their mistakes on a facet of nature that has literally no ability to oppress.
So what can we do? Well, it's pretty easy to make this song a positive call to defeat oppression: just change the target of the tigers. There are no ethical or logical justifications for destroying the Sun with an army of tigers, and it's not physically feasible either. But there is something that an army of tigers CAN destroy. Something that some would argue could be justifiably removed from the human experience because we don't need it for survival. Something that, left unchecked, would absolutely create the desert apocalypse that the Old Man lives in:
Billionaires. Here's a sample stanza:
I command an army of tigers
To fight for lands and seas and skies.
Their self-centered desires
Are extinguishing our lives,
So I command an army of tigers
To eat the rich tonight.
See? Isn't that metal?

Also, idk how to explain this but the lyrics to this song is related to if I could fly, if I were more eloquent I would have tried explaining but because I'm not I'm just leaving this here:
"With me I know you wanna come with me
Take anything you can carry
And leave everything else behind"
AND
"I think I might
Give up everything, just ask me to"
P.s. Promise this one is last:)

When you said
Stay right here
Let go of
all my fears
I let my guard down
Look at what happened
From all the
Long letters
Take off my
Red sweatshirt
We’re falling faster
Than I imagined

Lyrics
It’s a bitter cold outside
But not as cold as they’re treating you
It’s a bitter cold outside
But not cold as the screaming at you
You’ve tried light your world with kindness
You’ve tried to fight open every door
But they slammed it shut gaslighting
So fight for Grace more!
It’s a bitter cold outside but not as cold as your thoughts
It’s a bitter cold outside so let God touch your heart
I know the alcoholic rages make it cold outside
I know the pain makes it where you can’t sleep at night
You’ve tried to light up your world with kindness
You’ve tried to fight open every door
But they slammed it shut gaslighting
So fight for Grace even more!
So fight up, get up & light up your world
So fight up, get up & light up your world
So fight up, get up and light up your world with the kindness deep inside

This is our song called "Shut Up and Dance Punk"
See I been on my merry way
I thought about you every day
You make my bones rattle
Lining up sideways
Though I’ve been anchored with depression
Think I learnt a couple lessons
Never worse than when
with out all the good times
And love it ain’t supposed to be easy
The birds and the bees see,
It’s dated it’s BC
When I’m broken and I’m down
It’s still with me
It’s Stays in my heart
And here’s how it starts…. I
Sit down shut up and dance punk
I know you’re in a funk
I don’t care how long
you’ve been in a slump
Sit down
Baby, sit down
See I’ve been lying in the nettles
Contemplating several obstacles
The horticulture articles
suck
I can hear you humming sweetly
All joy your gunna bring me
I’m in need of something rhyming with
“Uck”
Sit down shut up and dance punk
I know you’re in a funk
I don’t care how long
you’ve been in a slump
Sit down
Shut and dance punk
*Harmonica instrumental*
Sit down shut up and dance punk
I know you’re in a funk
I don’t care how long
you’ve been in a slump
Sit down
Shut and dance punk

i’ve never been so indecisive on a piece in my life !!!! i redid the rendering once and this strayed so far from what i originally wanted for the sketch. idk how i feel about it actually. i might come back and redo it someday cause this isn’t what i wanted to do but im so sick of this drawing lmao i don’t wanna spend another 10 hours figuring it out again. i got finals to study for 👎
i was trying to combine my painterly art style with the more graphic style of my last drawing cause i thought it’d be cool. i was also looking at some of the art from reverse: 1999 but that didn’t really carry through in the final piece. i really wanted to do more painting ☹️ but whatever ive drawn so much in the last 2 weeks i need to stop lmao
Tumblr media
this is the sample i made after i restarted the rendering. i like how this looks a lot more but i think a big problem was how i rushed the second lighting source (blue) so it wasn’t executed very well. the finished piece is just way too clean for what i imagined but i mean its still cool!
i could not figure out how to do the weird magic soul taking thing for the LIFE OF ME. i spent 20 minutes just redrawing it 😔
ok that’s all. i need to go will myself into studying now. o7
