Koyoharu Gotouge, why did you have to hurt my little, fragile, glass heart like this 😥 💔?
This moment made me respect Kagaya Ubuyashiki so much. Despite some of his stupid decisions here and there and questionable actions, his death got me going "Good night, sweet prince. Your slayers shall kill Muzan and join you soon."
Kagaya got dragged into Muzan's mess, being cursed with an illness that made him and all generations before him frail and weak. That was generational trauma at its finest! Kagaya also had to carry out the duty of leading people to kill Muzan to clean up the Demon King's mess and keep everyone safe. He also had a family to care for and continue in hopes of lifting the curse.
Yet, did he become so scared of death? Did he desire immortality and pull a stunt like Muzan's? No. He took his hardship with grace, accepted death as a part of existence, and did all he could to make his mark and serve others, even if it was from the shadows. So, so unlike Muzan, who abhorred dying so much he grew impatient with the doctor who gave him help and went full Karen, killing the guy and unleashing a demon plague. And in death, Kagaya had what Muzan did not: a family by his side and love. And he showed it all in front of Muzan with a confident smile, ending it all with a bang to weaken the Demon King, even a bit.
I mean, look at his face in this panel. It's just so innocent, so pure, so peaceful. Almost beautiful even. That great pain Kagaya had, I think, he knew was going to end there and now, and he believed that his final strike with the slayers will end the generational curse. Good night, sweet Prince, indeed.

How good is Ousama Ranking - First Impressions Ranking of the Kings popular anime
Tumblr media
Ousama Ranking or how the english title describes it Ranking of Kings is a current popular gem among anime, easily overlooked especially because of its children-like animation.
Many confuse the series for a kids show or don’t even know about it because it has many competitors in the season.
But how good is the alleged gem?
Today we will see what the first episode has in store for us with the first impressions of Ousama Ranking!
Disclaimer: This Blogpost contains spoilers for the first episode of Ousama Ranking. If you want to enjoy this post without taking away the experience you can watch the episode first and come back. Otherwise it’s up to you!
Synopsis
Tumblr media
Prince Bojji is the first born, who can neither speak nor talk. He is deaf and therefore the people around him make fun of him by calling him names and deeming him as the “Useless Prince” since he is deaf and doesn’t have much physical strength.
Despite being a child and having to endure the stigma around him he meets Kage, a shadow creature that should have made him turn in fear, but instead Bojji befriends the intimidating Kage who also starts to open up to Bojji instead of looking down on him like the others.
Proving that he may have weaknesses but therefore a much stronger mindset and heart, Bojji and Kage’s friendship starts something much bigger. A journey in which both of them try to overcome Bojji’s fears and insecurities, and also make Bojji’s wish come true.
To become the best King he wants to be for his people.
Plot of Episode 1
Tumblr media
The first episode starts with a little explanation of how the Ranking of a King is established and what is considered to rank higher than others such as strength of the king, thriving of the kingdom etc.
We see that Bojji is crying in the lap of his late mother while she encourages him and tells him he is strong, someday becoming a great king as she takes a promise from the young Bojji.
Then the actual timeline of the anime starts in which we see Bojji walking through town with only undergarments. Later we see this is during his encounter with Kage, the last member of the shadow clan which was notorious for their assisnation as we find out through the episode.
As Bojji explores the nature and Kingdom that is similar to medieval times, he comes across Kage as he sees him, but chooses to ignore the shadow and walk on which infuriates the latter.
He follows Bojji and scolds him for ignoring him, threatens him for money until he realizes that Bojji can neither talk nor hear. Yet he also sees that Bojji is able to read his mouth and therefore can understand what Kage says as he grows more fond of the conversation with the shadow who also seems to understand what Bojji is saying despite that it doesn’t make any sense how.
The conversation ends with Kage getting the Prince’s clothes and getting a smile and affirmation that he will come the next day to give him more clothes. Kage sees Bojji as a fool and waits for him the next day until his fear grows that Bojji might actually come with his guards to arrest him when he told him that he was a Prince.
Meanwhile we see that Bojji was laughed at by the townspeople for being useless and now even running around with no clothes. As this incident repeats itself Kage gets to talk to the Prince more and opens up to him due to his kind nature as he starts to follow him. He experiences the cruel treatment of the villagers as they insult and make fun of the Prince, claiming he can’t hear them anyway and that he is not fit for the role as a noble. Moreover even the children make fun of him in the cruelest way possible until he reaches the palace.
Kage hides and Bojji doesn’t know he had followed him, as the second Queen Hiling mother of the second Prince Daida encounters the Prince and takes the opportunity to talk down on him and his behavior and also mentioning that her son is the better choice to become King, all translated in sign language by Domas who teaches Bojji swordsmanship in which he also seems to be weak compared to his brother Daida.
We get to know that Daida is apparently the favorite of the people and more wanted for the role as King.
As Kage continous to follow Bojji who was ordered to put on some clothes in order to meet his father Bosse, King of the Bosse Kingdom that was founded by him saving the village a long time ago, he sees Bojji crying alone in his room while getting dressed as the shadow realized behind the foolish and smiling facade of Bojji it actually bothers him what the people say about him.
Meeting his father shows that the King cherishes his first born dearly as he is the child of the late Queen he loved so much and he wishes for Bojji to grow strong and protect the kingdom since the King is apparently sick and hasn’t much longer to live. Therefore Bojji’s training with Doma should be more rigorous.
While training Daida the brother and second Prince challenges Domas to a duel as he already defeated the top Captain showing his high ability in his swordsmanship.
Domas who defeats Daida but is deeply impressed by Daida’s skills comparing him to the King in his former times, is surprised when the excited Bojji challenges Daida as well.
Everyone is shocked and surprised since it is well-known that Bojji can’t even hold a sword properly and compared to Daida has no chance in winning. Still one of the soldiers is unsure since he remembered seeing Bojji differently as he once was attacked by snakes.
Bojji dodges every move of his brother perfectly and with the right timing lands a hit on his head winning the duel by everyone’s surprise.
The episode ends with the soldier commenting that he thought Bojji’s effort and battle against the snakes was a fluke but it didn’t seem that this was true as he won with those very abilities he hid in that little body of his.
Expectations
Tumblr media
Despite that I went blindly into the show not expecting much beside an emotional rollercoaster the first thing that came to my mind while reading the synopsis was a main character with low self esteem due to his circumstances leading to a several emotions of fear on the character’s side but also sadness, loneliness and sympathy on my behalf.
Since the animation has a childish touch and even the cover looked a little bit like a certain children story I still expected it to have an unusual deep twist to it since there are also many games and anime out there that use such a kind of art and animation style, to amplify certain emotions and push a focus on the story unfolding. Meaning the journey of the prince in my eyes was a promise for character growth starting off with a character who might be a crybaby or timid at the beginning, but slowly grows out of his starter habits to reach his goals.
Kage, who is a shadow creature, came off as a more “rebellious side” and turnaround in the story since the Prince was supposed to be weak and bullied by those around him. It made me think that the stigma around a deaf main character who was only seen by his weaknesses could befriend such a dangerous creature in other people’s eyes must have deep insight and empathy for others in order to approach someone who is just as different as him. Instead of leaving Kage alone he decided to make him a friend.
I deeply wished for a good representation in Prince Bojji for deaf people, who neither can hear nor speak yet have more words than most people around them in their hearts, so when I heard the studio worked with the Tokyo Foundation of the Deaf who supervise the sign language in the series expected a lot of incorporations of real-life problems and real emotions by those who may be in the same spot as Bojji.
With those expectations that developed by reading the synopsis I watched the first Episode of Ousama Ranking with Bojji, the character who represents those with the stigma of being deaf, but trying to find the courage to do that far beyond everyone’s imagination.
Reality
Tumblr media
After getting into the first episode the story at some point sucked me in that I didn’t even think of a childish animation anymore, but got very involved in the events that emotionally touched me deeply.
First of all Bojji is quite the opposite of what I expected, since he is a child and his surroundings treat him like a fool, he is very happy, excited, curious and energetic not getting swayed by the negative emotions around him at first sight. He is also not shy or intimidated but very straight-forward as we saw him taking the initiative talking to the threatening Kage and also challenging his brother.
We also see that he is not scared as easily as he explores the world around him and even a bunch of snakes attacking him is a child’s play for him.
Since Kage was actually rebellious in some way I didn’t think he would be that aggressive at the beginning and moreover he was the one approaching Bojji for being ignored, making him a funny and prideful character who also seems to take advantage. Still it was very touching to see that Bojji’s kindness reached him and made him follow him.
As we got to learn that Bojji can read lips as he understood what Kage says, the realization that he understands every single thing anyone says by seeing their face hits deep. It means that even though Hiling said Domas shouldn’t translate her last sentences about him not being able to become a great King would also be understood by him.
Meaning the scene in which the young Bojji cries all alone in his room fully aware what everyone is calling him become much more emotional, showing that Bojji is very strong emotionally and in his mindset as he goes out every day not showing a single thing on his face and also understanding the emotions of others immediately.
We also see right after that the King who was only named and respected is very gentle and loving with Bojji, unlike my first expectation that he might put the most pressure on Bojji or even treat him differently due to the fact he is deaf, it’s the opposite he makes sure that there is always someone who can translate for Bojji and that he understand what is going on around him. In comparison Bojji is smaller than most people around him besides some children.
Therefore the world that Bojji explored and some characters seem much bigger in comparison which I find interestingly incorporated in the series since at times it shows how Bojji perceives the world from his view.
But I think what surprised me more is that Bojji already has a set of skills beside his emotional strength, courage and strong mindset. The duel between Daida and Bojji was set up from the start to show that Bojji shouldn’t be able to win it, which I also believed would be the case but a good experience.
A turn of events was when the soldier mentioned Bojji’s encounter with the snakes and also the same abilities he represented in the fight against Daida winning it. Unlike his brother’s aggressive and vigorous approach in a fight, Bojji dodged and times his steps. He doesn’t just hit around him but observes the openings he can get.
It was a nice surprise and also showed that in a fight it’s not the “strongest” who wins but that strategy, tactic and a right mindset is also very important and can determine a fight.
Bojji proved in Episode one that the qualities in a person are not always laid out on the outside or are seen clearly, but sometimes there are chances and opportunities needed to let a person’s skills shine.
Highlights
Tumblr media
My personal highlights of the episode despite that not many events happened are firstly Kage and Bojji’s conversation.
It showed that Kage who is mostly feared by people or seen in a bad light was surprised when Bojji who had his own set of weaknesses and prejudices about him accepted Kage, on the contrary he was eager and happy to talk to him since Kage was the only one who could understand him.
Kage on the other hand opened up due to Bojji’s kind nature and the curiosity of his, which made the conversations between the two so interesting since they seemed like two lonely people who had a good conversation in a long time without being judged by the other (Despite that Kage judged Bojji as a fool at first but made up his mind when he followed him).
Another thing that caught my eye was the sign language that was included, which mostly Domas used to translate for Bojji on some occasions. Since we never know which people we might meet in our lives it was a personal encouragement to learn it in order to communicate with all kinds of people. Since it’s much more pleasant and enriching when we can understand and respond to each other.
Despite that the scene almost made me tear up personally, I also loved it. Bojji crying in his room after being alone showed how strong he actually was being able to hold back all his negative emotions in front of the people. Considering Bojji is young and truly wishes to become a great King he already incorporates showing a strong appearance so his people wouldn’t worry about him, also a thing that the King mentioned which is necessary for Bojji to learn but no one is aware that Bojji is already one step ahead. It doesn’t mean that bottling up emotions is good, but it shows that Bojji cares to not worry anyone as a future King.
Last but not least, Bojji’s win against Daida. The happiness and pride I had in Bojji when he managed to win and prove to everyone that they underestimated him was grande. Not only was it an unexpected turn of events right in Episode one, but also a callout to not judge a book by its cover.
Conclusion
Tumblr media
After hearing about this hidden gem I was oddly surprised that it truly fascinated me.
With a main character that is so different in many ways and charming, I felt like I wanted to see Bojji succeed myself and prove everyone that he is able to do much more.
From animation, the setting and colors to the voice acting by people like Ayumu Murase, Kaji Yuuki and more.
This story of the young Bojji who made a promise to become the greatest King whether he can hear or talk is surely one that nobody should miss.
With much excitement and looking forward to what the series has in store after an intriguing and emotionally absorbing Episode one, let’s see how the story unfolds.
As the expectations were exceeded and an attachment to the main character was built up immediately I also wonder if the series can keep this feeling up to the very end.
If you also watched Ousama Ranking, I would like to know how you perceived the first episodes in the comment.
Were you also charmed by Bojji?

Sometimes you just have one of those moments where the progress we've made as a culture get thrown into stark relief. You look at something and go "Holy shit, that would never have happened when I was a kid."
Today, I had one of those moments when I realized that the teenage boys I'm working with are just. genuinely, openly enthusiastic about going to Build-a-Bear for their outing.
These are sixteen and seventeen year old boys! They just had a whole conversation about what to name their "cute", mostly new squishmallows! They're genuinely excited that they're going to Build-a-Bear this weekend and asking other kids to pick up specific accessories for them!!
Holy shit, that never would've happened when I was 16. None of the boys would have dared to be visibly interested - and neither would most of the girls! There would have been a million gay jokes and "Haha, you're a girl" jokes and "What are you, a baby?" jokes. Teenagers weren't even supposed to care about anything back then!
Less than 15 years later, and I'm watching three 17 year old boys treat all that as not even worthy of comment.
So let's call that a reason for hope. Even when the kids aren't alright, in some ways apparently they are alright. Go Gen Z, honestly. It's so lovely to watch you guys just openly doing and saying stuff that, when I was a teen, would've been a social death sentence.
