i'd rather not go to bat for a corporation under any usual circumstance but "will there be people worth talking to on a platform i can stand using in five years" is a situation i feel i have to be pragmatic about. it is not a moral failing to recognise that a given company does bad things and does things badly while continuing to support them when said company is providing basic contemporary infrastructure. platforms aren't fashion brands. they're more like your ISP, or any other utilities company, really. all abhorrent on some level, but there's always good reasons why someone might choose one over the rest, given a choice in the matter.

You misunderstand the reason tumblr works: we do not want to be presented with content that is high quality and will keep our attention. This is a blogging website, for casual blogging. We need features that help the casual blogging experience, not the social media experience.
If you add an algorithm to tumblr all you will do is make the user base feel less in control of their content and their experience, which should be your goal. If you try to accommodate everyone, you will alienate everyone. Do not make tumblr more like twitter. Do not make it more like reddit. Do not use other sites as blueprints.
This site is one of the last holding onto a semblance of user-friendliness, and to be more like other sites is to lose that user-friendliness.
You say certain things are confusing to new users. That is a good thing. It should be a learning curve, where they get to learn how to use it and have it be notably different from other sites. This is called individuality and for a thing like tumblr it is so goddamn important.
You will lose so many by assimilating into the expected visual and technical functions of other sites that are hostile toward casual users. I've been here for years, and I will keep coming back as long as tumblr retains the thing I love about it, which is that I can choose what shows up on my dashboard and keep things I don't want to see off of it. There are other ways to keep this site running, you are simply looking for the easiest. You are going to fail if you go the easy route. Please proceed with caution.

the sense of having any lore about the ancient [ten to thirteen years ago] of marble hornets times like granpa granpa tell us a greentext story....the only hitch is not having stories and instead having "i guess you had to be there" tales from the fringes, unless instead of a hitch you frame this as a bit
#like what's crucial info from then? who knows. smthing neat abt mh is its iterative resurgences apparently lol. got a wavelength#from the start it was always [queer fans queer fans trans fans trans fans] etc to be sure#by ''thee start'' i mean i showed up a couple of months? weeks? before s2 started. i think amnesia: the dark descent was partly to thank to#i mean of course it is in all things no matter the topic. and i feel manesia the dark manscent in this chili's tonight#one of the more [umm] first true spikes in New Ppl was when that game with the pages got streamed a lot#not a lot to work with there re: [you are already at mh hq] but brought ppl in like umm yea it's a little youtube movie here....#Back In Those Days...when youtube had a Reply feature for videos which i would have forgotten was anything if not for tta really....#the saga of [we didn't have any crisp behind the scenes pics of tim's mask for a while so deciding what its design seemed to be was tricky]#or [lucky that alex's striped hoody had both the inner seam highlights & the patch on the waistband] re: identifying it....#the hoody was already Out Of Production lol the base masks were from michael's crafts which i hear has recently discontinued them; pensive#paper mache cosplays here we go....#anyways nothing makes a good story. one time i sprinted to beat everyone on unfiction to solve a scrambled dvd cover#i managed to post it first (here on tumblr) And Then on unfiction; where it was also first lol. this was ignored#(one reply did a nominal shoutout like ''[other user] and others'' lmao)#i blog to this day....where's unfiction (rhetorical)#they were great for crowdsourcing codes but the Analysis(tm) left many things to be desired (i mean on tumblr too sometimes of Course)#unfiction would be like ''why is this entry delayed [thinking emoji]'' & truly the answer like ''they explained the behind the scenes reaso#in this linked facebook post here (the funy saga of joseph losing the distinctive out of print hoodie before its Part Two appearance)''#and the unfiction thread would continue apace like ''hmm guess we'll never know'' yeah apparently not#unsurprisingly my best Retro Tales From Behind The Scenes would be like; that fun mh viewing party commentary bit live event....#that there was overlap w/my first coming out transly times & probably had my Best Experience w/that from the mh creators lol#that thesis simply Is the tale. the bit abides

This Is "Dropping out of school to become a Mermaid", a facebook page I made In 2011, not long before facing my HSC (final exams).
Tumblr media
Creating pages was just how facebook kids made memes back in the day. I didn't have plans for it. I posted on it about 3 times over the years, and got the odd notification here and there.
But recently, something has changed:
Late last year, it started getting likes.
Tumblr media
This has only gotten faster. Suddenly, this page has an audience of...
Tumblr media
Young women?
Tumblr media
From the Philippines and Africa?
Now I get messages from kids wanting to know how to become a mermaid:
Tumblr media
???????
IDK. Maybe I'll link share mermaid art on it? Maybe add links to real places that teach mermaiding? Maybe I'll just leave the page alone like I have for ages.
I'm both amused and confused.
Meanwhile, on my other old like pages:
Tumblr media
Kids these days just aren't into becoming a jedi

Google Gemini AI Chatbot Restricted From Elections-Related Queries - Technology Org

Google Gemini AI Chatbot Restricted From Elections-Related Queries - Technology Org
Google has implemented restrictions on its AI chatbot, Gemini, preventing it from providing responses to inquiries regarding global elections slated for this year.

The developers say this is a part of the company’s efforts to avoid potential pitfalls in deploying the technology. The Alphabet-owned company disclosed this information on Tuesday.
This development coincides with growing concerns about misinformation and fake news fueled by advancements in generative AI, including image and video generation, prompting governments to regulate the technology.
In instances where questions about elections, such as the upcoming U.S. presidential match-up between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, are posed to Gemini, the chatbot replies, “I’m still learning how to answer this question. In the meantime, try Google Search.”
Google had previously announced restrictions within the U.S. in December, specifying that these measures would be implemented ahead of the election. A spokesperson for the company stated on Tuesday, “In preparation for the many elections happening around the world in 2024 and out of an abundance of caution, we are restricting the types of election-related queries for which Gemini will return responses.”
Apart from the United States, several large countries, including South Africa and India, the world’s largest democracy, are gearing up for national elections.
India has taken a proactive approach by urging tech firms to obtain government approval before publicly releasing AI tools that are either “unreliable” or in a trial phase.
Furthermore, there is a request to label such tools, indicating their potential to provide incorrect answers.
Google’s AI products have come under scrutiny following inaccuracies in historical depictions generated by Gemini, leading the company to temporarily halt the chatbot’s image-generation feature last month.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged the issues and committed to addressing them, describing the chatbot’s responses as “biased” and “completely unacceptable.”
In a similar vein, Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, announced last month its intention to establish a team dedicated to combating disinformation and the misuse of generative AI in preparation for the European Parliament elections scheduled for June.

Hi Zoey. Asking from a place of ignorance, could you please explain why Threads is dogshit?
Threads is the Hot New Garbagedump by Certified Scum Of The Earth and Facebook/Meta owner Zuckerburg. It is like if twitter was even worse.
There is ONLY a For You page, meaning you can never just see the posts from your followed accounts who, yknow, you followed for the purpose of seeing their posts. You can't see those. you have to see the algorithm's posts ONLY. You also require an instagram to get full access to all the features like Posting Images. You need a separate social media account to properly access this new social media. And once you've done so, the only way to delete your Threads account, is to delete you instagram account. The Whole Thing. For Some Fucking Reason. Not to mention, obviously since it's zuckerburg, the thing syphons your personal information like crazy, worse still than twitter.
Tumblr media
Like ALL your data. as much as it can get. (Love that it says "Other Data" btw. Nice subtle way of saying "whatever else we want") ALSO wouldn't you know it? It's fucking banned in the EU because it violates a bunch of fucking privacy laws!! So it's DEFINITELY not safe to use!
It is as predatory and exploitative as can be, created by someone that we collectively agreed Sucks Shit and Has No Empathy For Human Life and Individuality, and nobody should be touching it with a ten foot pole let alone sign up for it. Not even to test the waters or because it's where everyone is heading, or to see how bad it is for yourself. It doesn't matter if you're joining to get an account ready in case the platform ends up the new big thing. You're feeding the statistics. Even if you're not using that account, Zuckerburg can show the number of signups to shareholders and investors to prove to them that it's viable. Instead of jumping on the bandwagon in case it succeeds, inform people why they shouldn't join, to reduce its chance of success! It's like strikes and protests; The more of us get the word out, the more effective it'll be!

Okay.
What the fuck is the use of TWO SEPARATE TABS for "Following" and "For you" here on Tumblr if it's gonna show suggested posts (clearly I'm not following) on my "Following" tab anyway??? Shouldnt that just show on the For You one?
Fuck me, i guess for assuming their purpose.

I really need to talk for a minute about this new mobile update and how much I as a legally blind person hate whatever the hell is going on with the photos and how it's making this app nearly impossible for me to use
I'm not sure the same thing is happening on the desktop version but for those who may not know in the app whenever you tap on a photo it used to just pop up and you could double tap to enlarge it and zoom in and scroll around and all was great.
A double tap now likes the photo and it must be pinched and pulled to zoom in and out. A mild annoyance, and nothing compared to the rest of the update. If you scroll up, which I do frequently when trying to navigate an enlarged photo, it will send you to ANOTHER photo based on the tags of the post.
That's right, a completely different photo!!! A feature no one asked for and no one wants!! This isn't facebook, or instagram, and maybe tiktok but I never had that so this is a guess. When I click on the photo I only want to see that photo (or in the case of multiple photos in a post I want to be able to easily scroll side to side for those). I do not want to be taken to another post!!! Also if you scroll too far to the left you are then sent to the profile of the person who reblogged the post. I do not know why. Who wants this feature? Is it a feature at all?
As someone who only taps on a photo because I cannot see it and I need to enlarge it, this is beyond a simple annoyance. I cannot navigate the photo like I need, there's a hair trigger on whether it sends you to a new post completely or if you are sent to the profile of the reblogger. Neither, again, are things I want. this leaves me having to back track a lot, re-zoom the photo as it reverts back to normal, and hope dearly that this time I can just read the damned text before it freaks out again.
I haven't seen anyone else talk about this outside of the tags, but really this is making the app unusable for me, and I'm sure for many others.
@staff I know you guys haven't cared about your disabled community much in the past (other photo updates that stopped allowing me to zoom into gifs is proof of that) but please don't make this app unusable for me. I would rather not have to leave.

Canonical enshittification
Tumblr media
This is the Facebook playbook: you lure in publishers by promising them a traffic funnel ("post excerpts and links and we'll show them to people, including people who never asked to see them"), and then the rug-pull: "Post everything here, don't link to your own site. Become a commodity supplier to our platform. Abandon all your own ways of making money. Become entirely subject to the whims of our recommendation system."
Next will be: "We block links to other sites because they might be malicious."
Then some kind of "pivot to video."
Probably not video (though who knows?) but some other feature that a major rival has, which Twitter will attempt to defraud its captive, commodified suppliers into financing an entry into.
In case you were wondering, yes, this is canonical enshittification. Lure in business customers (publishers) by offering surpluses (algorithmic recommendation and an ensuing traffic funnel). Lock them in (by capturing their audience and blocking interop and logged-out reading).
Then rug the publishers, clawing back all the surpluses you gave them and more, draining them of all available capital and any margins they have, until they die or bite the bullet and leave.
I would also give good odds on this leading to a revivification of the "Pay us tens of thousands of dollars a month for a platinum checkmark and we'll actually show what you post to the people who asked to see it."
That will be pitched as the answer to publishers' complaints about not wanting to turn themselves into commodity Twitter inputs. It will be priced at the same (or more) as the revenues publishers expect to lose from being commodified, making it a wash.
All of this seems to me to be an "unfair and deceptive business practice" under Sec 5 of the FTC Act.
If I sign up to follow you because I want to see what you post, and Twitter shadowbans your posts unless they are formatted to maximize your dependence on Twitter, they have deceived me, and are being unfair to you.
This is *very* analogous to the Net Neutrality debate, where a platform blocks or deprioritizes the things its users ask to see, based on whether the suppliers of those things are its competitors.
I've written about how an end-to-end principle for social media could be enforced under Sec 5 of the FTCA, how it would address this kind of sleazy practice, how it would be easy to administer, and wouldn't form a barrier to entry for new market entrants:
