How I Annotate Non-Fiction Books:
Step one gathering supplies. The supplies you need will be based on your needs and the text you are annotating so feel free to fit this to your need or habits.
For physical books: highlighters, pens, sticky notes, page flags, index cards, the book/document
For digital books: your device or choice (might do an in depth post of digital texts later)
Tumblr media
step two- creating your key
For small documents, I tend to stick to one color (each of my classes are assigned a single color).
For Longer documents, with lots of information, I will create a key for example:
Tumblr media
keys should be based on what information is most important. In my history classes dates and names are more important whereas in a science class terms and chemical formulas may be most important.
You should also keep in mind why you are reading the book/document. For example: Are you reading to write a book report? Then it would be best to highlight the thesis and any points you wish to bring up in your review.
some parts of your key will most likely not need writing down after they become habit, for example after highlighting an important term, I will underline the definition of the term. (I personally tend to under highlight)
very important highlighted text will also get a page flag so that it is easier to find when reviewing, write a review, etc.
Tumblr media
step three- your first read through
break the reading into smaller segments, for example. if you are reading a textbook or information-dense book you may wish to use headings or subheadings as your guide for this. if your text is not already broken into smaller section resign yourself to summarizing after every few paragraphs
You can write your summaries in whatever way suits you, your habits, or the book you are working with.
Tumblr media
For this book I am writing my summaries in index cards, but I could have written them in sticky notes, or in a notebook (physical or digital.) I have tried all of these techniques and I like them all and tend to switch between them.
Tumblr media
On the back of my summary cards, I write the page numbers the information was pulled from so that I can more quickly find the information if I need to quote it.
Feel free to ask questions in the replies or in my asks!

I've realized I have a lot of Big Feelings and I don't want to subject my goodreads to the abuse that is my thoughts - so for 2024 I'm going to post all of my opinions on books I read here :)
I may occasionally also post my Big Feelings about characters so that my friends don't have to hear about them at dinner anymore
EDIT: forgot to introduce myself in the fucking introduction post
meg, she/her
I will be complaining a lot
until I'm not (i.e the posts about characters i like)
I'm a new reader, only started early 2023
currently I'm a big fan of legendborn and the grishaverse
I am very open to messages, discussion, and (civil) disagreements - i love to talk! clearly!
My tbr grows stronger every day, and with your help i can have the biggest tbr ever seen

new studyblr & bookblr | hi!
i'm a portuguese law student in my last year (last semester, actually!) of my bachelor's degree. despite being almost done, i've found my focus slipping a bit lately, while also missing a creative outlet. my goal is to use this blog as motivation (and maybe even make some friends along the way)!
i will be sharing my progress as i study, as well as the books that i am reading.
here is a peek into my reading tastes:
my favorite genre is adult fantasy, but i also read ya fantasy and romance (these last two mainly during the semester, when adult fantasy is too much for my brain to handle, lol)
but i will read anything, really!
as for adult fantasy, i love the Cosmere and The Realm of the Elderlings series
for ya, my current obsession is These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong
and my favorite romance author is Emma Scott (but i'm still at the beginning of my romance journey, so recs are appreciated)
i have plenty of other hobbies, though. ranging from movies and videogames to anime and j-pop! don't hesitate to reach out :)

Introduction
Hi, I'm B! I'm a new bookblr, and I literally read everything. I finally started posting here as I am pretty sure I've bored all my family and friends to death with how much I talk about books.
My favorite book (at the moment) is between the Handmaid's Tale by Margeret Atwood and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (I only finished it last night but it was so amazing).
I study English Literature and Film!

An Overdue Introduction
28 February, 2023
Studying has always been a harrowing task for me, but now that I’ve figured out what I actually want to learn about, I’ve been taking a lot more pride in it. However, maintaining motivation is easier said then done, so alas, here we are. What else can hold me academically accountable other than strangers on the internet and my own blog?
✎ Currently studying Philosophy & Ethics, French, and Art History at University level
Goals
Truth be told, I have about 100 goals this year, but to summarize a few:
✎ Become fluent in French
✎ Take online courses from different universities around the world
✎ Get some of my writing published
✎ Improve my drawing skills (+finish my drawing classes) & sell some art
✎ Get through this year of uni (relatively) unscathed
✎ READ
About Me
I love books, 80s music, cafés, libraries, Vitamin D, feminism, drawing, and overdressing.
I hesitate to say where I live, not only because the internet is a vast hellscape built by and for the unhinged, but I also plan on moving around a lot this year! So for now, just know I’m a Brit.
I’m also 20 years old, clinically depressed, gay, and dangerously caffeinated at all times.

‘I’m Glad My Mom Died’ by Jennette McCurdy
Tumblr media
I have been a fan of Jeannette McCurdy since her days on iCarly. So when her spin-off Sam and Cat ended, I had been aware that she did a few other projects, then she sort of disappeared from acting altogether.
This book dives in to the start of her acting career and continues through her time with Nickelodeon, to the present day. Through all of this, she covers the relationship she had with her late mother and the development of her EDs, caused by her mother’s obsession with having a small figure. I had been excitedly waiting for this release since it was announced, having been intrigued by the title. Now having read it, I now understand why the title is apt. I would recommend this book for fans of this actress or for anyone looking for a well-written and profound celebrity memoir.

Manifesto
I have come to the conclusion that TBR lists are more of a hindrance to reading than anything else. It's the burial place for all those books I think sound interesting but not quite enough to read and be done with them immediately. Then they stay on my mind like many tiny Damocles' swords for months if not years, stressing me out to no end.
Thus, I've decided to demolish my TBR list and never build a new one ever again.
Currently, I have 69 books saved on GoodReads and 24 unread physical books on my shelves, for a total of 93. My plan is to slowly make my way through them, hopefully by the end of 2023.
The rules are:
I can take a book off the list without reading it if A. I give it a good effort but end up DNFing it; B. the book is unobtainable; C. I can't even remember why it's on my TBR in the first place.
I can't add new books to the TBR. I either read the book immediately or forget about it. If I'm meant to read that book, it will pop up again somewhere else.
There is a lot of non-fiction, mainly history-related books on my TBR currently, but also literature classics, YA, various kinds of romances and fantasy, so that's what I'll be reading mostly in the next few months.
