This week has been a big, and busy one over here at Root Healing. I attended a networking event on Tuesday night geared towards BIPOC creatives + allies. It was my second event I attended with this organizer. It was a nice mix of mingling/networking, a few guest speakers and more mingling. On the way there, I saw $4.44 on the sign outside of a grocery store, and a license plate ending in 888. It was super affirming of the night I would have. I ended up connecting super nicely with a yoga teacher whose main job is being a front stage manager of a local theatre.
This evening I had another networking event held by a women's group. I was a little more nervous about this one mainly due to the location it was held at (it was like a cute bar, and I have minimal experience in those, especially locally, and even more so alone). I decided to Uber there as parking in downtown is a hassle. The angel numbers spoke again here, as my driver had completed 926 trips, which just so happens to be my birthday!! This was also super affirming of the night I'd go on to have. I arrived there, grabbed my complimentary glass of bubbles, and entered into the area in which the event was taking place. I stood on the outside for a couple minutes max when I was greeted by a woman who said, "it looks like you need someone to talk to." She was lovely to connect with and mentioned some great resources for me as I begin this entrepreneurship journey. I went on to connect with a handful of other women. One stands out for me during the evening. She approached me quickly after the first woman headed to the bar for a drink.
Anyways, I just wanted to take some time to write all this down so it's somewhere, and I guess, I am a writer in blood.

Gentle reminder that very little fandom labor is automated, because I think people forget that a lot.
That blog with a tagging system you love? A person curates those tags by hand.
That rec blog with a great organization scheme and pretty graphics? Someone designed and implemented that organization scheme and made those graphics.
That network that posts a cool variety of stuff? People track down all that variety and queue it by hand, and other people made all the individual pieces.
That post with umpteen links to helpful resources, and information about them? Someone gathered those links, researched the sources, wrote up the information about them.
That graphic about fandom statistics? Someone compiled those statistics, analyzed them, organized them, figured out a useful way to convey the information to others, and made the post.
That event that you think looks neat? Someone wrote the rules, created the blogs and Discords, designed the graphics, did their best to promo the event so it'd succeed.
None of this was done automatically. None of it just appears whole out of the internet ether.
I think everyone realizes that fic writing and fanart creation are work, and at least some folks have got it through their heads that gif creation and graphics and moodboards take effort, and meta is usually respected for the effort that goes into it, at least as far as I've seen, but I feel like a lot of people don't really get how much labor goes into curation, too.
If people are creating resources, curating content, organizing the creations of others, gathering information, and doing other fandom activities that aren't necessarily the direct action of creation, they're doing a lot of fandom labor, and it's often largely unrecognized.
Celebrate fan work!
To folks doing this kind of labor: I see you, and I thank you. You are the backbones of our fandoms and I love you.

Navigating Networking Events with Expert Tips from The Ortus Club
In today's interconnected business landscape, the significance of attending a networking event cannot be overstated. These events offer the opportunity to meet new people, exchange ideas, and form partnerships that benefit your career or business. The Ortus Club, known for its curated events that bring industry leaders and decision-makers together, provides invaluable tips to ensure your next networking event is successful.
The Power of Pre-Event Research
Preparation is one of the keys to making the most out of a networking event. Spend some time researching the companies and individuals who are expected to attend. This will help you tailor your conversations and identify potential synergies or business opportunities. Being familiar with the event's agenda can also give you the upper hand in discussions and make you look more informed and engaged.
Make Lasting First Impressions
The initial interaction at a networking event is critical for setting the tone of the relationship that might follow. Therefore, it's essential to maintain eye contact, offer a firm handshake, and listen attentively. A well-prepared elevator pitch that encapsulates who you are and what you do can also go a long way in making your conversations more impactful.
Focusing on Quality Interactions
A common mistake people make is trying to meet everyone in the room, which can spread you thin and make your interactions less meaningful. The Ortus Club suggests focusing on quality over quantity. Aim to have a few thoughtful and impactful conversations rather than exchanging business cards with everyone you meet. The goal should be to form genuine connections that can be nurtured into productive relationships.
The Art of Active Listening
Another overlooked yet critical skill is the art of active listening. Rather than waiting for your turn to speak, listen attentively to the other person. This shows that you value their opinion and can offer insights into their needs and how you or your organisation can fulfil them.
Leveraging Social Media for Post-Event Engagement
The networking should continue once the event is over. Social media platforms, especially LinkedIn, can be valuable tools for continuing conversations and keeping relationships alive. A quick message summarising your discussion and suggesting a future catch-up can go a long way.
The Importance of Follow-Up
The true power of a networking event lies in the follow-up. Sending a timely and personalised email thanking the person for their time and recapping your conversation can make a difference. It shows you are interested and committed to building a relationship.
Networking events offer more than just the opportunity to collect business cards. They serve as a platform for valuable interactions, building relationships, and initiating partnerships or collaborations. Companies like The Ortus Club, focusing on creating high-quality networking events, understand the importance of these relationships and offer the perfect setting for them to blossom.
Ready to up your networking game? Check out The Ortus Club's upcoming events and reserve your seat to ensure you are making the most of every networking event opportunity that comes your way. Take your networking to the next level; your future self will thank you.

How To Network 🤝📱💬
Have a Plan: Because everyone is important, it's really important to know what you're good at. Before you go to any networking event, figure out what you're good at – like things you can do well, what you know, and the people you know. Plan what you want to talk about, especially how you can help others, either now or later on.
Start with Who You Know: Talk to people you already know, like friends and colleagues. Ask if they can introduce you to others.
Go to Events: Attend conferences, seminars, workshops, industry meetups, and social gatherings related to your field of interest.
Use Social Media: Make profiles on websites like LinkedIn or Instagram to meet people in your niche online.
Elevator Pitch: Create a concise and engaging intro that highlights who you are, what you do, and what you're seeking. This way you can make a strong first impression.
Ask Good Questions: When you talk to someone, ask questions that show you're interested in what they're saying.
Provide Value: Networking is a two-way street. Offer your expertise, assistance, or connections to others whenever possible. When you start paying attention to what people can do, you might see that one person could help another person. Try to introduce people who you think have something valuable to share. When you make these good connections, you're helping the networking event go well. This will help you establish a good reputation and create strong relationships.
Say Thank You: After meeting, send a message to say you enjoyed the talk.
Follow up & Follow Through: If you said you would talk to someone later, make sure you actually do it and let them know you're still happy to help. If you promised to introduce one person to another, take a moment to make that introduction. These small things really matter to people, and just one introduction could make someone's life better.
Meet Different People: Don't just talk to the same kind of people. Meet people from different jobs and places.
Never dismiss anyone as unimportant: Don't think someone is not important just because of their job title. They could know important things or have helpful friends you wouldn't know about if you didn't give them a chance.
Join Groups: Be part of clubs or groups related to your work. You can meet more people there.
Be Yourself: Just be you. Don't pretend to be someone else.
Learn New Things: Keep learning about your interests. It helps you have better conversations.
