looking up species in dnd land, and foolish me for thinking there's any sort of distinction in anything wizards of the coast -related.

what are the visual/aesthetic/cultural differences between: sea elves tritons water genasi nereids

none. there's none. there's no rules, there's no guides, it's all the same nebulous 'i dunno, ocean.'

at least merfolk are distinct in that they have fish tails shalarin are distinct because of their silly huge back fin. water genasi and nereids are representative of water itself, so they can be like, made of water-looking. so there's that difference between them and the tritons/sea elves. but fhasdkfl;dsa

i don't know why this bothers me so much. i go to poke around dnd land, looking at oceany elf-y species and designs to feed my ocean forever-cravings and i get met with the vague fog of dnd non-descriptions.

I have to make it clear: this isn't a dig against tritons or sea elves, or whatever. I love oceany species, CLEARLY. I just wish there was variety at all, and I'm so fuckin confused about the redundancy.

"I plunge to my death" was so good! Grover grumpy if he doesn't get enough sleep. Froofy. Annabeth opening up about Thalia. The Chihuahua running down the train. Annabeth stabbed the chimera with her dagger. Grover not liking the skulls in the museum part of the arch and Percy knowing why. Annabeth talking about how cool the arch is archeticturally. Percabeth bonding and then he collapsed on her. Percy still isn't skilled enough to really fight a monster and win. Not on purpose. He rolled away from the chimera's fire, but without the river he would have died. It's refreshing to see a kid who's been thrust into this new world and he's not. good. at. it. He shouldn't be! I love how the river just grabbed him out of the air. And the nereid. She sounded like sally and told percy to breathe. and the look on his face when he realized he could breathe underwater!!`

● Sasaki also wanted to make things for you, once he tried to get you to eat sushi, yeah, that didn't turn out well.

● But he tried and apologized later!

● It didn't take you long to realize that you were in love, the real problem was your fear, clearly after being in a terrible marriage for millennia you had some problems

Four Pearls

This is a sort of continuation of this post where I talked about the changes regarding the solstice deadline, but this time I want to speculate a bit about the pearls and how I feel it will effect the larger storyline.

If you have read the original book, you would know that Percy originally only received three pearls from the nereid and Poseidon. The show gives him four. Let's talk about it.

So spoilers for PJO TV and the original PJO books! It's a long one.

There's a lot of speculation about what this means for Sally and "You will fail to save what matters most in the end." I still think they're going to fail to save Sally.

The prophecy: I have a hard time seeing the thing that matters most is not Sally. I have doubts that Percy's going to save her.

The preview: The preview for episode 7 shows Percy and Grover arguing:

Percy: "After we get the bolt, you guys are leaving…with my mom." Grover: "What about you? What about you?" … Percy: "Hold fast, Mom."

Based on how this line is delivered, I think this might be Percy telling Grover and Annabeth to leave thee Underworld with Sally. He pauses before he says "with my mom", which makes me feel like that hesitation means that Percy is relunctantly doing something once again. The way Grover reacts makes it seem like Percy is staying behind and he doesn't have a plan to get out.

He tells Sally to "hold fast" which we know is something that she tells Percy. The last time we hear this quote is when Sally leaves to distract the Minotaur and they're separated. I think Percy is telling Sally to hold on just a little longer because he can't save her.

The nereid: If you pay attention to what the nereid is telling Percy, you'd notice something a little odd.

Percy: "There's four of them." Nereid: "Save the world. And then go save your mother."

I don't think it's a mistake that she tells Percy to save the world first. She doesn't even tell Percy what the pearls are for, that's how the episode ends. If the intention of giving him the pearls was really about saving Sally, the emphasis would have gone on "save your mother."

So if the pearls aren't for Sally, what are they for?

I think they're testing Percy.

In my previous post, I talked a lot about how many, if not all, of the trio's major failures during their quest was because of the gods' interference. We are not meant to like the gods—they're setting it up so that down the line, we are more sympathetic to Luke's cause.

More importantly, it sets up Percy to be moree sympathetic to Luke's cause.

But Poseidon gives Percy four pearls. Poseidon actually waited for Percy to show up himself. With each episode, we are given little details to make us think that Poseidon is the god to be rooting for.

However, if you look a little deeper into his actions, Poseidon is not the perfect parent. Percy said it himself, Poseidon didn't acknowledge him until he needed something from Percy.

I believe Poseidon / the gods are testing Percy. The gifts from the gods don't come free.

Asking for Athena's assistance came at the cost of the Chimera.

Getting (relunctant) help from Ares nearly killed Percy if Annabeth didn't change Hephaestus' mind.

Seeking out Hermes for transportation caused them to miss the deadline.

What will these pearls cost?

Don't forget this quote from the book either:

When I reached the beach, my clothes dried instantly. I told Grover and Annabeth what had happened, and showed them the pearls.  Annabeth grimaced. “No gift comes without a price.”  “They were free.”  “No.” She shook her head. “‘There is no such thing as a free lunch.’ That’s an ancient Greek saying that translated pretty well into American. There will be a price. You wait.” (The Lightning Thief, "We Shop for Waterbeds")

I think Poseidon knows he will fail and he's not telling Percy. It's a test of his fatal flaw: personal loyalty.

Who will Percy choose? Annabeth and Grover or his mom? The world?

The entire quest, Percy had little to no agency in the big decisions. He does not want to go on this quest. Annabeth is in charge, Athena, Ares, Hades, Zeus, and Hephaestus all nearly killed him. Hermes stalls them.

The deadline has passed and they failed. But Percy chooses to move forward. He chooses his mom, he chooses to continue. Percy is taking matters into his own hands.

The price is Sally Jackson and Percy is not going to be happy about it.

In the long run, I think Percy is going to be facing a lot of difficult choices. Choices that will justify him being bitter towards the gods. Choices that will justify him becoming like Luke, the same way Annabeth could've been Medusa in another life.

And isn't that kind of the point?

Percy is not Luke. He's not like them. He has every single reason to turn his back on the gods. He has every single reason to overthrow them. But he doesn't. Every single day, every single decision, Percy chooses to not be like Luke. But he gets it. He understands why Luke did what he did.

The writers are writing the show with the knowledge of what is to come. Percy's bitter, but he's not Luke.

He's going to be given reasons to be bitter and it starts with the pearls. But what will make Percy different? What will make him better?

maybe it’s a technical difficulty thing but percy’s voice and lips being just a bit out of synch when he’s talking to the nereid is actually perfect because speed of sound increases in water whereas speed of light decreases and that would indeed cause a little disoriented audio-visual input the way it seems to happen for percy. i just think it’s a neat little detail, whether intentional or not, it made the storytelling more enjoyable for me.

What I hope to see in PJO TV Episode 6

I’m guessing the episode is gonna cover the chapters “We Take a Zebra to Vegas” and “We Shop for Water Beds". So I made a list of things that are in the book/story beats and could be included. Hoping for more book accuracy this time tbh.

The animal transport

-The zebra, the albino lion and the antelope. I saw an ostrich I think in the trailer so maybe that’s an addition but I don’t know why they would change the original animals

-The animals having the wrong food and the trio changing that, taking care of them, giving them water, cutting off the balloon etc

-Grover getting angry about that and maybe even trying to leave to start a fight with the drivers. Did they mention he’s a vegetarian yet?

-Grover talking to the animals (I’m still hoping for goat noises)

-Since the spiders were cut out of the waterpark scene maybe it will come up some other way? Since Percy uses it to help Annabeth snap out of the Lotus Casino trance. + the Athena/Arachne story

-”We’re a team, remember?” (even though I wished they would have shown that teamwork of the trio in the waterpark)

-Annabeth and Percy sharing an Oreo

-I guess they will not talk about Thalia and Grover because Percy already knows and they cut out the Iris message scene where Luke mentions it. So I wonder if they will talk about something else. Maybe more Annabeth backstory/her family. Maybe Annabeth and Percy uplifting Grover.

-Since they cut the Poseidon/Athena rivalry discussion I guess there will be no ‘I don’t know what my mom will do. I just know I’ll fight next to you.” “Why?” “Because you’re my friend, Seaweed Brain. Any more stupid questions?” Maybe there will be a similar scene

-Percy dreaming about Thalia and Luke and Kronos and his mother in front of Hades’ throne

-The drivers taunting the animals and Grover getting mad about it

-Annabeth tricking them into fighting by knocking on the wall

-The zebra talking to Percy (and him figuring out that it’s because Poseidon created horses)

-Grover blessing the animals + the “Why can’t you place a blessing like that on us?” “It only works on wild animals.” “So it would only affect Percy.”

-Percy freeing the animals

The Lotus Casino

-Epic games and water slides and bungee jumping and stuff like that

-Percy throwing Ares’ backpack in the trash and it later returning to him

-The kids enjoying the room, getting new clothes etc

-Percy teasing Annabeth for watching National Geographic

-Grover playing the reverse hunter game

-Annabeth playing trivia games and a city builder sim

-People that look like they are from all kinds of different time periods

-Percy getting suspicious and asking everyone what year it is

-Percy realizing and being scared that he forgot his mom’s name for a second

-Percy helping Annabeth snap out of it (not with spiders probably, so with something else?)

-Sudden weather change when they leave, stormy, checking the date to realize there is only one day left

-Apparently they go there on purpose because Hermes is there? I’m just hoping that they will for once actually fall for a trap and not just avoid everything because Annabeth is *~too smart~*.

The Santa Monica Beach + The Waterbed Palace

-Annabeth has the idea to use the casino cards for a cab

-The cab driver calls Annabeth “Your Highness” after seeing the infinite money

-Percy tells the trio about his dream and they start to realize something’s wrong because they were talking about two items, but they settle for “It has to be Hades” for now

-”You have evil thoughts for a goat.” “Why, thank you.”

-Percy walking into the sea in Santa Monica and letting a shark take him further to the edge of a huge chasm (could look super cool)

-The nereid riding on a sea horse

-Percy having flashbacks to seeing faces in the sea when he was a kid because she said they were watching him

-The nereid telling Percy to not judge his father and that they are not allowed to show favoritism

-She giving him the three pearls and explaining how they work

-”You have gifts you have only begun to know. The oracles have foretold a great and terrible future for you, should you survive to manhood.”

-”What belongs to the sea will always return to the sea.”

-In the Mississippi she said “don’t trust the gifts” so maybe she will say it now? Referencing Luke’s shoes and hinting again at his betrayal.

-Annabeth “No gift comes without a price.”

-Someone on the street recognizing Percy from TV

-I guess they already showed Gabe so they won’t see him on the News again? Though I think the young woman sitting next to him would make him more despicable because he replaced Sally immediately

-A gang of kids surrounding the trio and Percy scaring them off with Riptide

-While running from them going into Crusty’s waterbed palace

-God I hope they don’t cut it

-Crusty looking kinda reptilian

-Grover and Annabeth getting trapped on the waterbeds getting streched to be 6 feet tall

-Percy remembering the story of Procrustes and tricking him into laying down on a bed and killing him

"this has always been a family story" "this is the kind of family they are" directly points to how fucked up the gods and the way they operate are, and how Percy can see it and understand it. Sally raised him with unconditional love, and did everything she could to protect him; Grover stood up for Percy again and again, got himself into trouble with Chiron and Mr D for him, and i think we all know that he would do literally anything for him; Annabeth has known him for only a few days and has already put herself at risk multiple times, and was willing to sacrifice herself on the arch. all of them have shown him what family is actually supposed to be, and how Poseidon, or any of the gods, don't even come close to that, because they couldn't even do the bare minimum (maybe Poseidon sending the nereid counts but he's still a deadbeat so fuck him)

he's called them out repeatedly about how they act like if for their child to be worthy of their love, they must prove themselves, as though love is a scoreboard that needs to be tallied. it wouldn't even be right to call it transactional because that implies that it's a give and take system; no, it's not even that. the gods can just withdraw their support whenever they want, at a whim, proven by Athena, given the way she condemned Annabeth just because she "embarrassed" her. the daughter who worked to hard to be loved by her, to be the perfect child of Athena, always the leader, a literal 12 year old. "they'll always be in your corner no matter what" breaks my heart

Percy fights for those who he actually considers family. he was ready to throw hands with Gabe, you could literally see the rage in his eyes when he fought the minotaur, and he's still fighting for her by going to the Underworld. Percy chose Grover even after feeling betrayed by him ratting Percy out in the principal's office, and you can see him going to lengths to protect him. Percy said that he could never imagine being friends with Annabeth, but he still makes her laugh at the arch with that accent, and was ready to sacrifice himself in her stead despite being literally poisoned

him pointing out how the way the demigods talk about doing things to receive a god's attention, your fucking parent, going on dangerous quests for them, simply because they sired you, and just deciding to ignore you whenever they want, is ridiculous because that's not how family works. hell, that's not how parents are supposed to work. and Percy is going to change that. they're all going to change that

EP 4 was just mostly talking and conversations, but there was so much depth THAT I MUST TALK ABOUT IT.

I could literally feel the anguish exuding out of Sally trying to teach Percy to swim

Ngl i was a lil skeptical about azrien’s acting but hearing that scream changed everything

“Hey, you still sleeping?” “Yes” she’s so relatable i love it

i thought we were going to wait until the zebra truck scene for the trauma bonding but we got some of it now which is cool and also makes me wonder whether they’re going to take it to a whole level in the zebra truck scene

I kinda like how annabeth knows so much about grover their dynamic in the show is just so chef’s kiss

I dont know if the whole “thalia made me earn it” thing is canon but its an interesting spin on their dynamic

Its interesting how they changed frederick chase in the show. In the book frederick never wanted annabeth but in the show frederick loved annabeth. It makes more sense now that percy asks her to go back especially in the books, that was very controversial to have annabeth seem like she was overexaggerating about what she went through with them
