The Mall at Steamtown (now the Marketplace at Steamtown) is a mall in downtown Scranton, PA. It was built because of PA department store magnate Al Boscov, who partnered with a mall developer called the Shopco Company to make it happen. Boscov did this because he wanted to have a mall-based Boscov's store in the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre region, but couldn't get a spot at either of the two dominant malls in the area. Those two malls (Viewmont Mall and Wyoming Valley Mall) were owned by Crown American Corporation. Crown American at the time owned Hess's department store of Allentown, which was considered a chief rival to Boscov's. Thus, Crown wasn't willing to sign any leases with Boscov's at the time, or so the story goes. Regardless, the Mall at Steamtown got built with support from the City of Scranton as a downtown revival project. The mall was built adjacent to the Steamtown National Historic Site with the hopes that they would benefit each other. The mall opened in 1993 featuring Boscov's, Montgomery Ward, and a local department store called The Globe, plus name brand specialty shops, a food court, and ample underground free parking. Though Boscov's did well (as all Boscov's stores seem to), The Globe & Montgomery Ward were both failing businesses that ended up closing. This, combined with the economically depressed location of the mall, contributed to a fairly quick decline for the whole property. The Bon-Ton gave it a shot in the old Wards building for a few years before determining that it wasn't a profitable location and pulled out as well. Most of the name brand stores began to drop like flies inside the mall during the 2000s, leaving a lot of recognizable storefronts behind. The mall earned "dead mall" status, but lives to this day due to creative reuse of retail space for medical & academic purposes, as well as attractions like a library and aquarium.

Before I forget, I wanted to drop this.
If you're in Pennsylvania or need plans for the summer, consider coming by for Spooky Summer and the NEPA Horror Fest in June. The event hosts secured Bill Mosely and they announced the double feature today. It's going to be phenomenal and with a new horror themed food joint that opened up the road from the drive-in called Chop Top's, this summer is shaping up to be awesome - including Camp Punksylvania in early September.
I'll post announcements as they come in over the next few months.

Did you know that cigarettes are actually one of the leading causes of fatal fires among the elderly?
The most common places for cigarette fires to occur are in bed or while sleeping on sofas and recliners!
We hope everyone stays safe!

Part of the reuse of the Mall at Steamtown is the conversion of the food court into the Scranton Public Market. Vacant food court units have been walled off, and tables were removed to make room for a bunch of small, basic spaces for locals to set up stalls for cheap. This doesn't look like it was very successful since only maybe 2 of the units were occupied.
