Been seeing reviews of The Expanse books where people comment on how slow the books are, that it’s a slog to get to the plot arcs. And while yeah definitely it takes it time, i personally enjoy it.
Each book introduces new POV and slowly puts plot pieces together. I’m used to slow burns and books like Gideon the Ninth where things slow ramp up until it all falls apart in quick succession. The POV’s are a great choice too with how the books utilise them, it’s always the most significant characters and I haven’t felt like a POV was adding nothing to the books (except for in book 1 when I didn’t understand the format so ignored all that didn’t interest me)
Book spoilers from here for the books Abaddon’s Gate & Nemesis Games
Abaddon’s Gate is one of my favourite’s for how it does this. We meet Clarissa who makes sense in the context she’s in, she links back to her sister nicely, her family is known and by slowly exploring who she is we don’t feel the POV swaps in the main arc are sudden or odd.
Same with Anna, we get to know her, how she feels, how she acts in situations before you drop the mother of all crises on her.
Holden is well known at this point and his POV gives us familiarity, we love him as a character and know the crew he’s in so we still hold that emotional connection to them as the other POV’s develop. Because it’s hard to care about a character that’s new (this is why I have some major criticisms of Fourth Wing as a book, it wants us to care about how protagonist is feeling about a character we met two paragraphs ago, it feels empty and shallow)
By having a slow set up it also allows for a shit tone of points to use in the plot climaxes. Like oh that thing that was mentioned in chapter 2? Yeah it’s important. Those important things are masked by an info dump of sci-fi and each characters own interests so we as the reader don’t see what’s important straight away. But we know by now that this is the format the books will take.
That’s also why Nemsis Games and its deviation from what we expect with POV is important. Oh? We got used to new POVs and the crew being all together? Well this time we’ll only give you the crew’s POV! They’re familiar but this time you now fundamentally know how they think, removing Holden’s bias.
I’m once again info dumping about the book series, don’t worry I’m not stopping. I’m up to Babylon’s Ashes, so three books to go. Five seasons of the TV series to go. Let’s see if I can do this in less than two months 🫡

Greetings, All
So i’m fairly new to Tumblr, and despite skimming through the How-To section of this website, I’m still not entirely sure how it works, and what the ins and outs are, so bear with me.
I spend a lot of time thinking about The Expanse as a series. Mostly this is because i work at a job where I’m given a lot of autonomy and minimal supervision, so i can repeatedly listen to the last three books (the only three my cheap ass has opened his wallet up for so far), but also because its just So Damn Good.
The pacing, the dialogue, the themes explored. I love it all. Sure, I could do with a few less times when they explain how the ships or stellar objects are not to scale on a display, and that they wouldn’t be visible to the naked eye if they were, but other than that, I’d say I’ve got no complaints. It’s also refreshing to read a sci-fi series written by white guys who (so far as I know) haven’t done anything racist, fascist, or what have you. It’s a lot easier to enjoy something when there’s no guilt involved.
So yeah, I’ll mostly be talking about The Expanse. Some observations about the news and other things will be included as well, so if that isn’t your cup of tea, I’m genuinely sorry. As the name spacekozak suggests, Ukraine will probably feature prominently in that. Which, while I’m on the subject, if you have a few spare dollars, consider giving them to Razom (https://www.razomforukraine.org/donate/). They are a good organization doing good work, and your money would be greatly appreciated.
And that’s it for now I guess. Stay tuned.

I'm almost done making dinner so I'm setting up to watch The Expanse while I eat. Hmm, I wonder what this episode is about ...

I understand book-Holden much better than show-Holden, but the one moment when he was completely, 100% relatable to me was that moment after his’ and Fred’s interview with Monica after the catastrophe in Nemesis games:
(paraphrased because I’m reading the translation) "The problem was that he always knew what he meant, but that he never intuited what others would interpret until someone reacted to it."
Mood, Jim, mood.

This series always makes me crave all the food and coffee. In fact, I was going to make the bookpic chicken kebabs but unfortunately, I currently do not have any kebabs in my kitchen and so the leftovers that I do have made the cut instead.
I started this series after a friend, (@artbymeezy on insta) recommended it. We had planned to buddy read this book and I never thought it would happen. But it did, in fact, he was so captivated, he binged it and I fell behind (I was also very distracted by romance novels and non-fiction…thanks booksta). I did still manage to finish reading it in the same month as him so I’m still considering it a buddy read. I also messaged him while I read in our little 2 person book club, so once again still considering it a buddy read.
Amos and Avasarala were my favourites in this book. I feel like I read all the other chapters just to get to another Amos chapter. I’m also really glad I’ve read some of the novellas because the insight from those really added to this story (in subtle ways and you can enjoy the series without the novellas but I like details and background and information so I liked having the insider novella information). I don’t think I had any qualms with this book other than not liking Alex and Bobbie fraternizing and I don’t think Avasarala’s pistachios were mentioned in this book so that was a little disappointing.
I was going to take a brief break from the series again but my friend has already started reading Babylon’s Ashes so I guess I better keep going.

“The pleasantries were just ritual, but ritual was important. In Amos’ experience the more dangerous any two people were, the more carefully polite their social interactions tended to be. The loud, blustering ones were trying to get the other guy to back down. They wanted to stay out of a fight. The quiet ones were figuring out how to win it.”

I decided to take a photo of the book I rated the highest in each month so far this year. Tell me you're hyper fixating without telling me you're hyper fixating.
The January book *would* be Leviathan Wakes if I didn't include rereads and March's book has the same rating as Abaddon's Gate, but I felt like I needed a different book instead. So...this could have been 5 books from The Expanse series and a children's graphic novel. 😬

Thoughts on Nemesis Games
This was the first book in the series where for the most of it I has basically nothing to complain about, it was just subjectively fun to read.
Unfortunately then Naomi was kidnapped again, and her and Holden’s relationship took the center stage, but I’d still say that this was the most enjoyable out of these books for me.
Giving the crew outside of Holden a chance to shine outside of him was a good idea. Especially Naomi and Amos got a lot of focus for who they are as people and why they ended up being the people they are. And most likely seeing into Amos’s head and glimpses into his past would have been even more of a revelation for someone who hadn’t read The Churm. Unfortunately Alex’s storyline got mostly taken over by the plot, but he’s the most simple of the crew members anyway.
We also managed to see how life on the Rocinante has effected all the characters, which was effective even when we saw what they were like before at the same time.
I was surprised how little was resolved by the end of the book. Basically the characters are together and they have somewhat of an idea of what needs to happen next, but all the antagonists are still at large and the war is still ongoing. That’s going to have to be solved in the next book and two.
