The new issue of Amazing Magazine is now out! It features Jenna Coleman on the cover, and contains pictures from a photoshoot of her, as well as an interview with her about her roles as Lady Johanna Constantine and Johanna Constantine in The Sandman!
You can order it here:
Jenna Coleman is navigating new waters as Johanna Constantine in the Netflix adaptation of The Sandman. Here the Victoria actor talks comic books, exorcisms and how Doctor Who prepared her for the DC Comics fandom.
“In terms of a female comic book character, I love the fact that she’s rough around the edges,” says Jenna Coleman, talking about her role as Johanna Constantine in the highly anticipated Netflix series The Sandman. “From Allan’s scripts she just leapt off the page and felt so textured, and layered; the cynicism, the wit, being such a lone wolf warrior, having this empathy and big heart, but having to not let anybody in. It really lent itself as a female role and I feel like, in the comic book world, there aren’t many female roles like that either.” The Allan in question is showrunner Mr Heinberg; he developed the show alongside Neil Gaiman and David S. Goyer, adapting it from Gaiman’s comic book of the same name. Published by DC Comics, the original series ran from 1989 to 1996 and followed the often-dramatic adventures of Morpheus (aka Dream), the king of dreams. Coleman’s character was the male John Constantine, who first appears to help Morpheus locate his stolen pouch of magical dream sand and in exchange is cured of his frequent nightmares. Johanna was actually another character – one of John’s ancestors from the 18th century – but Coleman’s Johanna is confirmed to be a direct replacement for John. “We played a lot with costume,” says Coleman, who previously transformed into Queen Victoria for the ITV historical drama Victoria, and time travelled back to the 1970s in Netflix’s The Serpent. “The visuals were really interesting, because the original comic book character is a chain-smoking Liverpudlian, so we went down that path with a version of that and the iconic Mackintosh coat on. It made me look more masculine, I guess, and myself and Allan wanted to take those roots and make Johanna a more upgraded version. We kept her quite sharp and sleek.” Johanna did maintain some of John’s rough and tumble, though; she swears like a sailor, with some choice quotes including, “Jesus f**k”, “run along and f**k off back to hell,” and the cleaner – but no less comically delivered – “Get in line, bruv, can’t keep God waiting.” The character is a detective with the powers of a sorcerer and is perhaps most notably skilled in performing exorcisms. Reimagined for the screen several times, he was played by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 film Constantine and portrayed by Matt Ryan in NBC’s live action Constantine TV series, and in various animated Justice League properties. A new HBO series revolving around the character is currently in development, though casting has not yet been announced. 9 people you’d like to know better
@darling-shrike ran past me and slapped me with this so here we go!
Last song: BxMxC by baby metal metal. These ladies have captured me and I am very content in my cell.
Currently watching: Young Justice. Didn’t know there was a fourth season until I saw a massive spoiler on YouTube, so that’s nice. I’m rewatching the previous seasons just to get a recap and also cause it’s a good show. Next on my watchlist is Severance and a rewatch of DS9.
currently reading: Empire of silence, from the sun eater franchise, by Christopher Ruocchio. I’ve had this book for 3 years and I just got to page 300, but I have made a promise to myself to finish it by the end of the year and start the next one right after. Also got halfway through American Gods and I keep getting reminded of why people keep publishing Neil Gaiman.
Current obsession: Literally anything SoulsBorne or related Fromsoft things. I’ve been watching lore videos, speedruns, challenge runs, etc. Also been on a bit of a manga binge, specifically Dai Dark by the best girl Q hayashida and things I need to catch up on like OPM, CSM and JJKS. Also just people with four arms acting as like a gardian angel/ benefactor to people and giving them powers to wreak havoc and just making little stories in my head while I walk
Tagging @inspiringraisin @bluish-rose @none-sex-left-gay @existentialbogwitch @nautas-last-braincell @justalittlebird @doshwashing @neil-gaiman @fluororichterite
Take part in the ordeal of being known, it feels pretty good

Chapter One: The Origins of Chaos' Daughters
Disclaimer: I do not own The Sandman, all right belongs to Neil Gaiman. Netflix show based on the comics Lords of Balance belongs to the DC universe, and Ocs belong to me.
The multiverse turns and twists to the very waves of balance. Night and day. Good and evil. Dreams and Nightmares.
There was a group of collective consciousness, separated into two.
The Lords of Order, Justice, and Balance
The Lords of Chaos, Dominant and Destructive
Two Eternal Lords that weigh the balance of the universe. One of each would be sent down and decide which is the strongest, Stagnation or Anarchy.
But one among them grew curious about the universe they fought over, always wondering its worth, so they broke away from the lords and ran to the Universe, taking a human form and walking among the Mortal and God alike, learning their way, their secrets, and their ways of life.
And she grew to love them, learning from them and understanding how Order and Chaos were the same, how they follow a flow and the endless possibility that leads to renewal and destruction.
She was even changing herself, becoming her person, evening finding her first love, giving her a gift of her very own child. The joy she felt when she first held her daughter in her arms, was an experience she could never forget.
But that joy was short-lived as the villagers of her home accuses her of witchcraft and burned her home to the ground, with her infant daughter still inside.
She screams and begged the father of her child to aid her, but he didn't answer as her home and only child were burned to the ground.
The pain that tainted her grew into a fury and uncontrollable rage, as her destructive nature of Chaos was no one she can easily hide away as she punished the whole city for the crimes of one village.
Death. Famine. Drought. And Starvation plummeted down onto the whole vast land that was once rich with life, killing millions. It was an action she later regretted, but made it a lesson to never forget the cruelty of humans and upper powers.
She wondered for centuries, her heart broken and spirit diminished, meeting people, gaining friends, just to lose them, betrayal from one to another, her love for humanity was reaching its very breaking point, but until a group of young orphan girls was running through the woods, trying to outrun hunters, that planned to use the young girls as toys or slaves.
The Lady of Chaos' spirit was renewed and slaughtered all the men, defending the young girls and taking them in as her own. She knew they could never replace the daughter she lost, but they saved her from herself.
They build a small village deep in the forest, away from the cities of men, and grew in numbers, living in peace and harmony, where trust was their greatest alley. But as their numbers grew as did potential threats that could easily kill them.
So she gifted her daughters with her Chaos nature, empowering them and training them to defend themselves and these such actions have drawn the attention of the Endless:
Lord Morpheus. Lord of Dreams and The Nightmare Realm.
The Lady was not trusting of him, at first for the pain and loss of her child never healed her distrust of outsiders, but over time they grew close, sharing stories of the outside world, and becoming the best of friends. she became a place of comfort and safety to the Dream Lord, a place where he can let his guard down and relax. He even walks among her daughters they greeted him with smiles and share stories.
He had grown to love every one of them, but Mother Chaos was unaware of the loving glazes the Dream King always stole, falling for her and her very nature.
Even once made a Promise under the Promigrate Tree, to always stay together to never lose one another, no matter what. but that promise held a special place in his heart, for he had fallen for the Mother of Chaos.
But thousands of years passed, and as the rumors of them grew, drawing all sorts of hunters to hunt for their very home, the Mother of Chaos defended her home, time and time again, to protect her daughters. but her time came to a tragic end as she was struck down by a hunter that heard rumors of a village of cannibals nearby.
The hunter was punished by the daughters of Chaos who sent him as a reminder that no one will cross their village again.
Morpheus and the daughters gathered around the mother as her life was slipping away from her, but she just looked at her daughters and smiled, happy for the days she spent with them, to their first breath and the very last.
Grateful for Morpheus and the time he spent with them and so her last gift to her daughters was her power, her Chaos seeping their very souls and giving them her task, maintaining the flow of Chaos.
And with her last breath, begged Morpheus to watch over her daughters as if they were his own. Even walked in his very realm, bringing their joys of chaos, befriending the residents of the Dreaming, for it became a second home to them.
But the Dream Lord had lost more than just a friend, he lost the only person he truly shared a connection with, he lost his heart that day in the woods.
But over the centuries, he has loved each of them as if they were his family.
But his heart unyearn for the Mother of Chaos, wishing he could have taken her as his bride as it was the promise he made upon the Promigrate Tree, but the company of her daughters was enough to sooth is broken heart.
But the days of joy ended in a night of red night skies, villagers believed that their village was still the rumored cannibals, so the entire village banded together and burned the village to the ground and slaughtered the witches.
Morpheus came only too late, finding the only survivors running from the burning village. He steps onto the burning down as hundreds of Chaos witches were laying slaughtered on the grounds, their blood staining the floor.
But his heart truly broke as he saw the only home of Mother Chaos made for herself was nothing more than ash, smoke, and brunt grounds, losing the only connection he had left of her.
Devastated, the Lord of Dreams scream a low, rumbling, and deadly scream as the whole world could hear the howling cry of a being who lost his first love. And his heart turn numb to the humans as they were nothing but cruel beings that take and destroy everything beautiful and perfect for the world.
The surviving witches bid farewell to the dream lord, wishing him good fortune in his long life and they hid among the human world, still dwindling in numbers, but survived throughout the year.
And the Dream Lord chose to remain in his realm, vowing to never step into the waking world unless necessary.
The line of Witches perished until there was only a handful were left...

2 and 3 for the book ask!
(you sent this so long ago I'm SO sorry)
2. Top 5 books read this year: okay I'm gonna do this in chronological order
Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake by Alexis Hall (delightful rom-com of a book, and laugh-out-loud funny to boot. Got me out of a major reading slump and almost managed to get me back into baking)
The Ruthless Lady's Guide to Wizardry by C. M. Waggoner (action-fantasy romp involving a scamp dating above her station, a terribly proper and gallant butch troll, and an undead mouse)
Hogfather by Terry Pratchett (the nice thing about the Discworld is that you can have read a huge chunk of the 40-odd book series and still have more wonders to discover)
The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri (oh boy oh boy I can't get started on this one or I won't shut up - emperors and princesses, maidservants with a mysterious past, ancient magics, revenge plots, prophecies with the power to upend empires, and queer love)
Uhhhhh I'm gonna cheat and say tossup between The Sandman volume 2 by Neil Gaiman (yes, it took me this long to start reading the Sandman); A Magic Steeped in Poison by Judy I. Lin (TEA MAGIC IN FANTASY ANCIENT CHINA); and Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb (ugh fine everyone who recommended it was right actually)
3. Rereads! Yeah I reread a bunch of books this year (actually a quick check shows that not as many as I thought!), including the first two Murderbot books, a Becky Chambers Wayfarers book, and Ancillary Justice. I guess sometimes the only thing to get you through is some nice queer/feminist/anti-capitalist/anti-empire sci-fi!
Thanks for the ask!!

What begins with a journey and ends with a charge?
For those who haven't seen it: The Batman portrays the Riddler as a heavily-alt-right-coded creep. He's Angry About the Injustices of the System, Man, and he's got a small legion of (apparently all-white-and-male) social-media followers who are really into guns and other tacticool military gear, and he plots with them to Take Action in a way that feels very QAnon / Jan. 6 / The Storm / whatever-you-want-to-call-that-thing.
My feelings about this are twofold:
1) My inner fanboy is mad, because that's missing the point of the Riddler, 100%.
...I mean, this is a matter of personal preference. Like every goddamn Batman character, the Riddler has been a whole lot of not-very-similar things over the years.
But the best portrayals of the Riddler, in my opinion, are the ones where he's an absolutely archetypical Batman baddie -- which is to say, completely driven by his own neuroses and foibles. He doesn't care about politics, he doesn't care about the wider world at all, he doesn't even care about being effective, he cares only about showing off how smart he is and having high-stakes puzzle-hunt fun. Making him an avatar of a topical cause celebre feels like a tremendous insult, even more than it would be for any other Batman villain (except Scarecrow, I guess).
These days, of course, lots of people channel their neuroses and foibles into political movements. So yeah, I get it, there's something there. But I feel strongly that the Riddler should be a throwback to a better world, a more individualistic world where you channel your neuroses and foibles into wearing a ridiculous outfit and writing cryptic crosswords, where the crime is just a PR stunt for the overwhelming essential force of your personality.
I am also a big fan of that Neil Gaiman comic with the Riddler giving a TV interview -- the one where he laments contemporary comic grittiness, and yearns for the days when supervillainy was gentlemanly and corny and fun and ultimately kind of softball. So seeing a Riddler who revels in carnage and destruction and death, for the sake of Making a Change, is also unpleasant on that front.
2) So the really weird thing here is that there's nothing explicitly alt-right, or right-wing at all, about The Batman's Riddler. He doesn't talk about race or gender; he doesn't talk about wokeness; he doesn't talk about Things Having Been Better Back Before; he doesn't even have a demonized outgroup, apart from the Rich and Powerful. His political speeches, which are pretty vague in their content, could come straight from the mouth of a Marxist. He wants justice for the little guy, and he's willing to do violence to get it, blah blah blah. All the right-wing coding is done with cultural cues: the white-male-ness of his following (and his own self), the love of tacticool shit, the vaguely-Kantbot-like discursive affect.
(In fairness...he apparently doesn't believe that Gotham's new black lady mayor will be any less corrupt than Gotham's old white guy mayor. But no one in his position would have any reason at all to think that, except for someone terminally poisoned by the modern leftist flavor of demographic thinking.)
It's jarring, when you stop to think about it, in this particular cultural moment. Because, as far as I can tell, the only thing that makes him a villain rather than a hero -- according to the prevailing social script, I mean -- is the cultural coding. If he were black instead of white, if he were pushing his followers to use baseball bats and bricks instead of rifles, he could be someone from one of the fringier parts of Black Lives Matter...and then everyone would be talking about how He Sure Has a Point Even If He Goes Too Far, just like they did with Killmonger from Black Panther.
Have we lost the ability even to pretend that it's something other than "Who? Whom?"

V. SYMMETRIC SIGNS (Leo/Scorpio, Virgo/Libra)
These are signs for which the combination of elements forms a perfect mirror image. Their reverse and inverse signs are identical. The Sun passes through each sign consecutively, beginning in late summer (Leo) and culminating in early winter (Scorpio). Symmetric signs are characterized by balance, and tend to exhibit fewer qualities associated with their ruling element due to the influence of the opposing element. For instance, Scorpio (Water / Fire) is less empathic and more individualistic than Cancer or Pisces, and is overall more Masculine, as evidenced by its traditional association with Mars. Similarly, Libra (Air / Earth) is less detached and more grounded than Aquarius or Gemini, and is overall more Feminine than other Air signs due to the influence of Venus.
Symmetric signs are indicated by an inner box enclosing the associated pair of elemental symbols.

I have heard of quite a few of these and seen most of the manga come thru my register at work lol. I can second the Check Please rec (it’s also a webcomic!) and I’ve been reading the newer Books of Magic in the past year or so ironically enough and thought it was fun, was considering fishing some of the 90s out of the dollar bin at a local comic shop but the condition wasn’t good. Calvin and Hobbes is a CLASSIC and I’ve been meaning to get around to Kingsmen cause I enjoyed the movies. DC Bombshells is a GIFT. A Gift. And I adore the Earth One Teen Titans, kinda wished they’d continued it. Kingdom Come is another classic and something I was leant in high school, I was very lucky in high school lol. Lumberjanes is adorable as well! I know you said you weren’t looking to start new stuff but Fence is a good one and has Check Please vibes. The Umbrella Academy is also great when it comes to just weird superhero flavored nonsense. And Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is a classic for a very good reason.

Years of depression has prepared me very well for the current state of affairs which is weird but whatever here’s a list of my faves on netflix, if I’m missing something let me know cause now’s the time, right?
I'm kinda embarrassed by how long this list is but also kinda like fuck that, there have been very long periods of time where it was either sit and watch shows all day or lie down and stare at the wall in silence all day so I chose the former and it adds up and there's nothing wrong with that.
Glow (Badass ladies learn to wrestle, great 80s aesthetics and grrrrl power.)
Our Planet (Netflix version of Planet Earth, beautiful, cute, terrifying that we aren’t doing more to save us all.)
Bojack Horseman (Hilarious and “deep” critique of LA and celebrity culture for people who don’t care about LA or celebrity culture. Also very funny visual jokes about how if animals were also kinda humans, and lots of great jokes about cliches and tropes, puns, and weirdly rhyming and alliteration? I don’t know how to explain it just watch it.)
Father Brown (BBC, based on mystery novels about a priest who always meddles in police business and solves murders in his small English countryside town.)
Pose (The Ball scene in NY in the 80s, poc queer and trans writers and actors bringing their people’s stories to life. So much joy, so much beauty, but also NYC in the 80s so you will cry.)
Paris is Burning (Documentary made during the Ball scene Pose is based on.)
Sex Education (Such empowering representations of all walks of gender and sexuality, and actually very educational, like I would straight up show this in schools because everyone would be very entertained and would learn a lot more than they teach in a lot of schools.)
What Happened Miss Simone (Documentary about Nina Simone’s life, music and the activism the establishment/ government worked to suppress and used to blacklist her.)
Night on Earth (Low light camera technology has gotten hella good and they’re starting to learn stuff about animals’ behaviors at night that they’ve never been able to study before.)
Call the Midwife (Follows stories from the midwives that worked in the East End of London after the war, based on memoirs. Interesting look at the kind of life of poverty people led before there were many large hospitals or birth control, right as the British were implementing their universal healthcare program.)
The Great British Baking Show (Everyone’s so nice and everything looks so good!)
Atypical (Dramady about a high schooler with autism and his family, very funny and great representations of autism and how to be a good dude.)
Parks and Recreation (Just very funny and everyone knows it. Amazing ensemble cast, and they still keeps in touch through a group chat awww doesn’t that say something!)
Kim’s Convenience (Canadian comedy about family of first and second gen Korean immigrants that’s just a really solid funny modern day sitcom.)
Queer Eye (I feel like if everyone in this world could get a life makeover from these guys we just wouldn’t be here right now.)
Obvious Child (Jenny Slate accidentally gets pregnant and gets an abortion. It’s funny and it’s realistic, we’re not all Juno.)
Maria Bamford: the Special Special Special (Rad lady comedian not afraid to talk about her mental health and lack thereof and very vocal about the stigma surrounding mental health problems and I very much relate to. My favorite standup probably ever. I could make a list just for standup so message me if you’d like more suggestions.)
Monty Python (Flying Circus, movies, doc, ect. “The Beatles of comedy” is the cliche but it's true.)
Easy (Very unconventional non-narrative structure and editing, following random people in Chicago in a very real life feeling way. Different story each episode, but sometimes characters show up briefly in each other’s lives or return for a second episode.)
Everything Sucks! (High school nerds and lesbians and theater geeks in the 90s! I’m so sad this only got one season I rewatched it recently and it’s just so solid.)
She’s Gotta Have It (Revival of Spike Lee’s first movie, black girl magic, art world, gentrified New York, lots of sex.)
The Office (Classic, holds up very well, totally solid throughout, worth a rewatch. Also if you're a fan Jenna Ficher and Angela Davis are doing a rewatch podcast jsyk.)
Billy on the Street (Mindless game show for laughs, amazing gay comedian runs around New York yelling questions at them. I watch this with my dad and he can’t help but snort even when it’s “inappropriate” or “juvenile” so you know it’s good.)
Good Girls (Some lower middle class family ladies that are all about to be broke decide to rob the grocery store one of them works at, but they accidentally cross a gang that stored their cash there, so they gotta pay it back, and of course can’t help but get deeper and deeper into it. Very suspenseful like your heart rate will go up and stay up. )
Arrested Development (It’s just funny, as you've probably heard, but I'm telling you it just really is.)
The Laundromat (Tells the stories of a few of the people involved in the panama papers in different ways, explains in an entertaining way how money laundering works in a way that made it mostly make sense even to me. The rich get richer, and Meryl Streep is here to tell them to fuck off and pay their taxes.)
Russian Doll (She keeps dying and coming back to the same moment over and over and can’t figure out how to stop the cycle or why so kinda sci fi, very suspenseful, big cliff hanger ending, or rather no ending, and just found out season two filming is delayed because virus which is very annoying!!)
Dear White People (Show picking up where the movie left off, after a frat hosts a black face party and the ivy league college is forced to deal with racism.)
Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings (Stories based on Dolly songs. Very Hallmark channel, you will cry.)
Episodes (Show about two British writers making a version of their BBC show for American tv. Kind of meta, very funny, Matt LaBlanc plays himself and it's great.)
Dumplin’ (Fat girl grows up with a beauty pageant winning mom and enters one herself with the help of her late aunt’s Dolly Parton drag queen friends.)
Lunatics (Chris Lilley is the best character actor ever, all his shows are just him playing different parts and you seriously forget it’s all one actor, even when he’s playing teenage girls.)
Jane the Virgin (Prime time soap opera about a girl who is engaged and waiting until marrige and is accidentally inseminated with the only sperm sample of a man who’s had cancer so decides to keep the baby, very heavy on the soap opera cliches in a meta way but also that’s what it is. So good at first but after the first three or so seasons it gets too much tbh though.)
Zumbo’s Just Desserts (Australian Bake show but with just sweet stuff and pressure to be avant garde.)
Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (Jerry Sienfeld goes out with funny people to coffee and lunch in fancy cars and they have funny conversations.)
One Day at a Time (Very very cheesy laugh track sitcom, like the kind of thing my grandma would watch, but it makes me so happy it’s doing a great job eplaining really woke concepts like queer pronouns and ptsd and addiction and white privilege to people like my grandma!)
Orange is the New Black (Good stories about very diverse characters, I’d say by starting it off about a upper middle class white girl it tricks privileged white people into watching and then encountering the more realistic stories of women who go to prison and how the system treats prisoners. Ending of season two is super solid and you can stop it there, season three is a really great critique of the privatization of prisons. I admit it goes on and on to the point that it’s stressful and after watching it spread out over years I can’t remember/ keep up with all the different story lines, though they’re all good stories to tell.)
Space Jam (Just saw while scrolling for more ideas this was added! One of the greatest sports movies of all time obviously.)
Bonus amazon prime shows, I try to avoid Amazon in general but these are just too good if you know a prime member who you can't convince not to give their money to amazon so they might as well give you their login (like yer dad).
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (A 1950s New York upper class Jewish house wife gets dumped and starts doing stand up, so funny, great actors, and they seriously transform NY back into another era.)
Good Omens (Mini series based off Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s satirical novel about the biblical apocalypse, very funny, very smart, very British, does the book pretty solid justice.)
There are other decent things that aren’t included, I’d say these are solid recs for a general list of genres all over the map without letting it get to a ridiculously unhelpful length. I feel like I’d be good at the “if you like this then you’ll also like…” so let me know if some of these are your favorites too and want personal recs for what to watch next based on a brain instead of an algorithm.
If you want to have a remote date and watch things together on video chat or one of those watch party sites or just tell me what to watch next here’s some stuff on my list I’ve been curious about or not sure about or don’t want to watch alone or have been putting off, and now’s the time right?: Strangers Things, I Am Not Okay With This, Black Panther, The Betty White doc, John Mulaney Snack Lunch Bunch, Dead to Me, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, A Wrinkle in Time, The Little Prince, Maniac, Wet Hot American Summer reboots, and a bunch of different standup specials from comedians I like.

The unconventional beauties of comic books
Many people mistakenly think all non-evil female comic book characters are conventionally sexy.   So here I am to prove that myth wrong.
Note: I am NOT saying these characters are not beautiful.   No, many of these characters are beautiful, it’s just they are not CONVENTIONALLY beautiful, meaning not part of a mainstream stereotype idea of beauty.
Take for example Anna Maria from Marvel’s Spider-Man.  She was a little person that Doc Ock fell in love with and gave his second life to save.
Tumblr media
Squirrel Girl:  Squirrel girl from Marvel comics who is plus sized.
Tumblr media
Alecia: Alecia (Marvel’s greatest sculptor, and long time love interest of Ben Grimm AKA The Thing from Fantastic Four.  Notice her eyes. She’s blind.
Tumblr media
She-Hulk: She-Hulk (currently just Hulk)
Tumblr media
Despair: Despair in Neil Gaiman’s Sandman.  Not quite evil though very amoral.
Tumblr media
Wanda: Wanda also from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman.  Wanda is Trans and this is no big deal now but when she was first created in 1992 this was very uncommon in comics.
Tumblr media
Desire: Desire (who is both male and female or neither, or both, depending on their mood.) also from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman.  Desire skirts into potential villain category but Desire DID help save the universe in Sandman: Overture.
Tumblr media
Delirium: Delirium (also from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman).  The living embodiment of various mental illnesses, she has mismatched eyes and has moments of profound wisdom.
Tumblr media
Loki:  Loki of Marvel comics. (Genderfluid). Currently a protagonist.
Tumblr media
The Hecatae / The Three Witches / The Kindly Ones / The Furies / The Fates / The Three in one: The Hecatae from DC Comics
Tumblr media
Before this trio appeared in Sandman they were also horror hosts of the old DC comics.   The trio technically did act as villains in Neil Gaiman’s Sandman: The Kindly Ones but they were invoked by another...
Tumblr media
The Old Witch:  The Old Witch from EC comics.  Though many only remember the Crypt Keeper today he was actually part of a trio of storytellers.  The Cryptkeeper, The Vault Keeper, and The Old Witch.    The old witch also appeared in season 2 of Tales from the Cryptkeeper (animated series).
Tumblr media
Death.  This one kind of is a conventional beauty but this is Death, the Grim Reaper of DC comics. Created by Neil gaiman for Sandman.   Death AKA Death of The Endless is actually very kind and compassionate and tries to be a friend to all who are in the process of crossing over into the afterlife.
Tumblr media
Death AKA Lady Death or Mistress Death from Marvel comics.  This one is more of a conventional Grim Reaper.
Tumblr media
Mazikeen.  Also created by Neil Gaiman. You’ll find a lot of characters on this list were created by him.  Mazikeen is Lucifer’s lover from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and Later Lucifer’s own spin off comics. Half her head is a rotted skull with the brain hanging out.  Not really good but not quite evil either despite being a demon.  She’s very much one of the protagonists in the Lucifer TV series.
Tumblr media
Erzulie from The House of Whispers published by DC / Vertigo comics.   A spin-off from Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sera from Marvel comics.  A lesbian trans woman.   Though not all that rare now she’s one of Marvel’s first mainstream transwomen characters and deserves a mention on this list of unconventional beauties. Also to point out a growing pattern here, she is the love interest of Angela, a character created by... Neil Gaiman...
Tumblr media
Foxglove AKA Donna from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman. A Lesbian rock star with unconventional tastes and makeup and hair (that’s not stylized, her hair was really like that.)   Also created by Neil Gaiman.
Tumblr media
Thessaly.  A (at least) two thousand year old (and very near sighted) witch from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and later had her own spin-off. A very powerful witch and formerly Morpheus’ lover.  Also created by Neil Gaiman.  Not exactly a good person but not out for world domination either.  Just very self-absorbed.
Tumblr media
Hazel: Foxglove’s love interest in Sandman: Brief lives and later in Death: The High Cost of living and Death: Time of your life.   Also created by Neil Gaiman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Barbara Gordon:   Barbara Gordon AKA Batgirl AKA Oracle in DC Comics.   She spent many years in a wheelchair.
Tumblr media
Vampire by Night:  Vampire by Night from Marvel comics.  Not the typical sexy vampiress this is the niece of Werewolf by Night.
Tumblr media
Madam Web:  A blind parapalegic and powerful old psychic.
Tumblr media
Danny: A sentient Gender Queer Street from DC Comics Doom Patrol.
Tumblr media
The House of Mystery: Similar to Danny the Street and I’m pretty sure The House of Mystery is female.  Created before Neil Gaiman’s Sandman The House of Mystery did, however, make several appearances in Neil gaiman’s Sandman.
Tumblr media
In fact in Justice league: Dark the animated movie she took the form of orchid as her avatar.
Tumblr media
Eve:  From Neil Gaiman’s Sandman (And also older horror comics before that) can take the form of a young woman, a middle aged woman, or an old woman at will.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She was originally DC”s answer to EC’s The Old Witch but Neil Gaiman made her The Raven Woman of the realm of The Dreaming in his Sandman comics.
Aunt May: From Marvel’s Spider-Man, Peter Parker’s elderly aunt who raised him.  You may not consider hier worthy of this list but she’s kind, a major recurring character, and Doctor Octopus almost married her once.
Tumblr media
So yeah, there are many unconventional non-evil female comic book characters. It’s just 90% of them are created by Neil Gaiman...
Very tired, might add more to this list later.
