Basically I think that if you're going to insist on the importance of direct and honest communication, you have to not punish the behavior you want to see. You can't go around saying "Don't expect your family/friends/partner/etc to be a mind reader! If you have an issue, you need to communicate it!" while also repeatedly dismissing/belittling/ignoring people who do that, and then act as if someone is dishonest/manipulative/cowardly/bad at expressing themselves when they stop directly telling you what they're thinking or feeling. You're the asshole here, bro.

Something radioactive has come over me and i need to ramble on about ii writing. spoilers ahead for the recent episode leaks btw
Something that has always been a little strange about inanimate insanity’s more emotionally driven conflicts and scenes is that they often build on some sort of implied “statement” that falls flat, usually because its a very strange “statement” to stand by, but the conceit of the conflict/scene relies entirely on the audience already understanding and agreeing with the “statement”; this is tricky to word so my example will be a small detail in the scene between balloon.oj (and later balloon.suitcase) from s2.
It isn’t bad enough here that you don’t understand where the scene is aiming, but if you take it as is and don’t read into the writer’s intent, it is strange that a written or planned apology is considered faux (it would make sense if the apology was manufactured to be what oj wanted to hear or something, but iirc the only thing mentioned in the ep itself was just that it was written). Its just a little “statement” that makes a scene intended to be emotionally investing into something a smidge confusing. (I would’ve used the scene between knife.suitcase later on as my example but i’m not even sure what the intent was there haha but you understand my angle here)
This has actually not been more prevalent than through how the show intends to present cabby in s3, where i suppose the “statement” is that a person can never be accurately described through written observation, or a list of traits. (what is with this show and thinking if its written its lesser? anyway.) The obvious issue with this statement is that its just kind of incorrect, or at least that its incomplete, and the way its shown in the narrative is baffling and leads to a very weird reception of cabby. The audience is meant to think that, despite what “motives” she might have, what cabby does is unjustifiable in the end (which is a conclusion that depends solely on the audience agreeing with the “statement”). It is VERY much of note that her “motives” being that her files are a disability aid pulls this situation from wobbly writing to actively harmful, and it makes it that much worse that we are supposed to think this isn’t justification for her doing something that, even without this purpose, really isn’t all that damning on its own.
What got me started on this was something from some of the recent ep leaks, and i’ll go on about that here i suppose. There is a dialogue exchange between bot and cabby that truly stumped me in terms of how far it went to twist cabby’s words to make her look insensitive or unaware, and them using a fan favorite to do so doesn’t help. Essentially, after very weirdly calling bot a “perfect replica” of bow, cabby says something to the effect of “These notes i took on you, thinking i was researching bow, are not applicable because you are not bow. I would like it if you told me about yourself so i can correct my previous view of you”, to which bot says in an aside, “As usual, she doesn’t want the person i am, she just wants facts”. It was so strange to me that the writing is so hellbent on vilifying cabby’s files that it needed bot to skip over the part where their identity was invalidated so that they could take issue with a line of dialogue from cabby that actually recognizes them for who they are and not who they were forced to be previously. This “statement” is a weird hill to die on despite the amount of ableism that comes from it, is basically my thesis.

Eunyung rubbed off on him more than we realize
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
that's exactly how EY would act in that situation: fight with words before he had no other choice but to resort to physical violence. loud public accuzation to have witnesses in case sth bad happens while acting like the sole victim. spelling out exactly what's going on without even lying. antagonize further to have a bit of fun and provoke them bc he can't be seen throwing the first punch if he's really innocent.
-> why did he act like EY?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HJ wanted to avoid fighting bc he wants to put that aspect of his life in the past and that's how EY usually does it. altho, tbf, even for EY, that strategy only works out if he runs away before the actual fight starts, which HJ did.
ig HJ's time spent around EY did sth after all

There’s a reason I so rarely actually go into tags, but to legit see someone be like “hey, you guys, did you know this Dracula guy, he’s like...Way Problematic.  And all you guys are fetishizing him and his abuse.”
I don’t even know where to start.
(I mean, with the block button.  But also I have to just...take a moment...once again trying to acquaint people with the idea that sometimes there are negative things in books and we call those things plot.)

What are your thoughts on the metaphorical utilization of masks used by different characters throughout water 7?
so ive never actually thought about this before outside of the acknowledgement that it's a factor. the most obvious being robin wearing a mask in almost all her more ghosty scenes in water 7, and then taking it off and the entire thing escalates further though with more honesty.
the three main characters of water 7 (robin, usopp, and franky) all wear notable masks. robin when she's going to murder the mayor, franky when we have a perception of him when he's putting up a front, and usopp when he becomes sniperking.
i think the most interesting use of the masks is the less obvious immediately one, when franky and usopp are wearing masks. franky is wearing a mask of weird toxic hyper masculinity the kind that you'd see from a gangster in a movie. we learn later that this is a front he puts up to protect the franky familys reputation, (which is a parallel to robin putting on a mask to save the strawhats) but the way he changes his personality to create a more confident version of himself that shows no weakness parallels usopps use of the same mask with sniperking. you could also argue that usopp is at least under the perception that hes saving the strawhats from having to care about him when putting on the sniper king mask, (i actually think he directly states this? its been a year since i saw the beginning of enies lobby and itll be a 4-5 month journey before i get to it on my rewatch please pray for me) and that robin is becoming more confident when she puts on the mask as well. (although as ive said before robin is a wonderful intuitive competent woman whos never actually used any of her skills for anything good. /loving). i think with robin and usopp theres more of an inherent lie in their confidence when they put on the mask because robin, while she presents herself as confident is very much not. (although i think shes a lot like luffy in this aspect where i think she is genuinely confident but is insecure about things that are very deeply meaningful to her and that drives them more than you would think because they seem confident everywhere else) and usopp is usopp. franky is confident but where his confidence lies is way different. its less that hes lying about being confident but more lying about the type of confidence he has. franky is the type of guy whos confident in bawling and hugging you so tightly you feel like youre going to explode. he doesnt have confidence like gang bege. franky wouldnt tell you to kill a guy
I really fucking love sniper king. i think in general sniper king is the best use of usopps character, because it highlights that lying is a good thing when it comes to him and his personality. sniper king allowed usopp to be there for his friends when he had to lie to himself to keep holding onto their relationship. lying in a lot if senses symbolizes usopps inherent want to hope for better things for himself that he thinks won't happen and i relate to that. a fucking lot. when usopp lies i think it speaks to an inherent hope and openmindedness for whatever hes lying about to be true. all of this is what usopps use of the sniper king mask represents, along with his want to be a hero type guy. (oh to be an antihero in an anime that wants actively to be the type of guy the protagonist is)
there is a gender aspect to it. like i think the reason usopp and franky wear the same mask is because of both of their relationships towards their masculinity and to further the idea that franky is everything usopp wishes he was in a lot of ways. i was like "why do people read usopp as transgender" a bit ago but then i realized it was a stupid question because. like usopp as a character is inherently tied to masculinity in a very trans way. i read fanfiction about this recently so I think I'm a scholar on it but zoro is very transguy in the sense he is masculine inherently but still feels a disconnect between him and masculinity despite that. very post transition transguy. whereas you look at usopp and you see like a pre transition transguy who feels like he has to inherently grow into masculinity and a lot of that is tied to for him a better stage in his mental health. (and im glad he eventually gets that post ts).
anyways back to the masks on the other hand i think theyre a lot like the lines in scott pilgrim. like the weirdo lines ramona gets when she's insecure about her relationship with scott due to past experiences. yes the 3 people who put them on really do change their behavior when they put them on but it's because of the same thing (past experiences influencing them to the point where they arent changing their behaviour in the present)
ALL of them being influenced by trauma
and usopp is the only one who can spin this as a positive utilization of the mask as opposed to franky and robin because of what we talked about previously (usopps lies are his hopes)
and i think usopp gets his "in his own head so much because of past experiences hes refusing to see the truth in the present" pre getting his sniperking mask. but because of how usopp works as a character, he wasnt in a mask there because to him because of his neuroses he sees that as the truth of who he is. i also think the "in his own head so much because of past experiences hes refusing to see the truth in the present" still applies to him as sniper king but ends up meaning something differently. because as sniper king he is not acknowledging the reality of his need to take accountability for the shit he started but instead reverting back to lies hes previously told for the sake of reverting temporarily to normalcy with his friends. (which is a positive in the sense nico robin is going to die but negative in terms of interpersonal accountability)
this is all to say its really good that you cant see usopp/franky/robin when they put on the mask. they are emotionally unavailable to the people around them like they're not even considering other people as a factor which continues the idea of the masks as something that turns kind people alien and shuts them off from whats happening around them. thank you for watching my thoughts develop in real time, anon.

This has been on my mind for weeks and I talked to my therapist about it today and told my girlfriend about it too so now it's time for me to update the gay people in my phone: I may have schizotypal personality disorder
#this is like the equivalent of telling the bees to me#rambling#like ive been thinking about ever since i learned that autism shares a lot of similarities with schizophrenia and looked into that#and then learned about negative/cognitive symptoms and realized i related a lot to them#and then i learned more about schizotypal personality disorder and it was fuckin scary how much i related to it#what with the magical thinking and the severe social anxiety that doesnt go away when i get to know someone#and the ideas of reference and the eccentricity and the communication difficulties and the strange thought patterns#and then i specifically learned about avolition as a negative symptom which describes the exact thing thats ruining my life rn#and. i was scared to talk to my therapist about it bc i was worried it could be used against me somehow#but it was good to talk it out with her and get some additional perspective on whats going on in my brain#and if it means i could maybe possibly work on fixing the avolition and the social anxiety (my two biggest issues for years)#then it would be 100% worth it tbh. and its also kind of helpful to have some sort of framework to understand whats happening in my brain#funnily enough when i told my girlfriend (who was previously mis?diagnosed with schizophrenia and considering autism)#about it she related a lot too. so i guess we'll see how that goes#its. crazy how much of an overlap there is between schizospec orders and autism#i feel like i might should write up a post going into detail about different schizospec disorders to raise awareness#bc like. it is so much more than just hallucinations and delusions#in fact its not even required to have both of those for any schizospec disorder. some only require one and others dont require either#there is so much to the schizophrenic spectrum that i was unaware of and I'm sure that's probably true of other people too

It’s been said before and I feel like its tough to talk about this without sounding like a cliche motivational speaker or a cult leader but my inner (conscious) voice can actually be so powerful. Acknowledging it and continuing to work to leverage it within the past few years has been one of the best things I've done for myself. It can't fix everything and I still frequently get stuck in toxic or unhelpful thought patterns or behaviors, but drawing upon even small successes which have been in large part a product of intentional self talk and my dogged resilience give me so much hope that though I may not succeed at fixing some issues now that one day I will be able to.

you ever have a conversation and you're a little uneasy for the next couple days but you can't figure out why and you figure it's probably just that some personalities don't mesh and you feel kinda guilty about it, and then BAM you realize they were actually being mean and manipulative and you're suddenly INCREDIBLY angry to make up for underreacting in the first place
