must have books | dear nursing student
After being accepted into nursing school, I had no idea what to do next. I started looking up all kinds of stuff trying to figure out what to expect; YouTube, ALLNURSES, Instagram etc. I took bits and pieces of advice from all of them. I'm going to start by sharing the books I have found useful. This is mostly dedicated to those that procrastinate or can't stay focused long enough, like me. These are easy reads that are broken down into small sections which makes them engaging.
Pre-Nursing School ○ Saunders NCLEX-RN
This book should be purchased before you even get a stethoscope. Things to study before starting first semester  — ○ Fluids and Electrolytes ○ Acid-Base Balance ○ Vital Signs ○ EVERYTHING ABOUT DIABETES MELLITUS Practicing the clinical application questions will be good review to get yourself use to the types of questions you'll see on your first quiz and test.
Tumblr media
Pre- or During Nursing School ○ Pearsons Pathophysiology Reviews and Rationales ○ Elsevier Nursing Diagnosis Handbook | An Evidence-Based Guide to Planning Care
— these two books saved me during first semester —  ○ Learn how to use the NDH, it's a lifesaver | Elsevier ○ Get familiar with pathophysiology, nursing assessments, client-centered nursing care, nursing interventions | Pearsons R&R
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moving onto Pharmacology ○ Pearsons Pharmacology Reviews and Rationales ○ Pearsons Nurse's Drug Guide
I plan to continue to use Pearson Reviews and Rationales books through the rest of my nursing program. These books are far from the dense nursing school textbooks but contain the same information. Alongside the Saunders NCLEX-RN, you should be set for your nursing school journey.

NOTE — Please stop buying other peoples notes, TAKE YOUR OWN NOTES! These books have more information than any individualized notes seller out there. Taking your own notes allows you to personalized your perspective on the topics you learn.

Taking a "Gap Summer"
I recently graduated from nursing school in June. Unlike most of my classmates who have already taken their board exams and are officially working as nurses, I decided to take a longer break. These past four years haven't been easy. I know deep down that I am not ready to jump into the workforce just yet. Switching from a student to an adult identity requires me to examine the life I want out of myself, so I decided to put a plan into place to ensure I become... her.
Here are the habits I want to build in the near future:
Attend yoga 5x/week and walk long distances (at least 10k steps a day) 2x/week
Read for at least an hour every day (I will definitely post book reviews/learnings to hold myself accountable)
Attend the next Black Girl Book Club in my city (So excited)
Wake up before 7am
Stay off of social media (with the exception of Tumblr)
Work on writing my book (at least 1hr/day)
Study for my board exam (the NCLEX) 6x/week which I plan to take in September
So far it has been two weeks, and I already feel so much lighter and more disciplined. Especially getting rid of Tiktok! It has given me so much time to focus on hobbies that I am proud of.

Omg I hope you pass your nclex! I’m taking mine soon too!
I’m happy to report I did 💗💗💗 and YOU will too! Just keep safety in mind when you read the questions. They don’t want you to know absolutely everything, they just want you to be a safe practicing nurse! And listen to this song…. It hit home when I was driving to my exam 🥰😂

I PASSED MY STATE BOARDS! GUESS WHO’S A LICENSED NURSE NOW! Meeeeee!!!!!
Idk surprisingly it was a really easy test. I was done in two hours and there was only 3 out of 75Q that I was completely unsure of. I thought. Would be harder. The practice exams on uworld were much harder.
My colleague paid the $8 to get the quick results. We were supposed to check together by the waterfall. She did it first I’m like fuck it I’ll pay the $8 and check too. It was so nerve wracking because the two preceptor nurses were around me and were like COME ON CHECK IT I’m like calm down let me breathe
My hands were shaking and I was hyperventilating. And then I saw it.
Tumblr media
I WAS THRILLED. I gasped really loud and said I passed and my preceptors started clapping for me and then someone ran over and was what’s going on and they’re like she just passed her boards and they congratulated me too!!!
I told my family about it. My dad was happy for me and knew I was going to pass. My cousin did too I love her. My mom smiled really big. I’m so happy.
It felt so fast and surreal though. Like so much has happened this year for it to be over. I’m happy. I’m a happy gal.
Time to masturbate to celebrate. I have fucking work tomorrow lmao but whatever
They also sent an email about a 3% raise im like lmao okay whatever!
I PASSED WHOOOOOOOOOOO
I’m gonna be like haaaaiiiiiii I’m gonna be your nurse todaaaaayyyyyyyy.
I had so much anxiety and I still do because I feel incompetent but this shows that I can do it.

Statins
Which laboratory values should be monitored in a patient taking statins?
a) Blood glucose and hemoglobin
b) White blood cell count and platelets
c) Liver function tests and creatine kinase
d) Serum potassium and sodium
-------------------------------------------
Explanation: Statins are a class of medications used to lower cholesterol levels in the blood. As with any medication, statins can cause side effects, including damage to the liver and muscles. Therefore, it is important to monitor liver function tests (such as AST, ALT, and bilirubin) to ensure that the medication is not causing liver damage. Creatine kinase (CK) is an enzyme found in muscle tissue, and elevated levels can indicate muscle damage. Therefore, monitoring CK levels can help detect muscle damage associated with statin use. Blood glucose, hemoglobin, white blood cell count, platelets, serum potassium, and sodium are not typically affected by statin use and do not require monitoring.
Answer: The correct answer is c) Liver function tests and creatine kinase.

Took the NCLEX for the 4th time yesterday.
Took 3 hours. Had 145 questions. Felt like throwing up after.
The whole ride home, I just felt sad. Defeated. I couldn’t sleep last night either.
I know I didn’t study enough. I know I waisted a lot of time.
I think maybe I should talk to my doctor about upping my Zoloft.

6 P's of DYSPNEA
Possible foreign body
Pulmonary embolus
Pneumothorax
Pneumonia
Pump failure
Pulmonary bronchial constriction
Dyspnea has six major causes: 1. (Possible) foreign bodies can become trapped or logged within the trachea restricting air flow. 2. Pulmonary embolisms can prevent complete oxygenation of the blood in the alveoli due to restricted blood flow. 3. Pneumothorax collapses the lung and prevents full expansion, restricting oxygenation. 4. Pneumonia leads to poor lung ventilation too. 5. Pump failure refers to the heart not beating appropriately. If the heart is not perfusing the lungs, then the lungs will be unable to oxygenate the blood. 6. Pulmonary bronchial constriction prevents the passage of air into the lungs which contributes to dyspnea. Don't forget to save this, nurses!
