@defractum @nyquildriver @navigatingrealities thank u for validating me..... I did in fact cancel on her bc Wow there’s no way I’m dating someone who says the problem with millennials is that they care about social justice
also hey as uk people can you guys confirm that the conservative party here does in fact also suck bc she very much tried to tell me that no they’re good actually and nothing at all like american conservatives

navigatingrealities said: I also re-read The Goblin Emperor this year (it does help a lot to already know the names a bit) and read the new Becky Chambers (less plot than her previous but still really good). I have The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare (the 1st one by her I’m reading) and looking forward to it! That I’d recced this year Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, Jade City by Fonda Lee and Less by Andrew Sean Greer <3
I am waiting to buy the new Becky Chambers but I am excited about it! Spinning Silver is on my shelf, but I want to get through with some that have been lent to me. Less and Jade City both look interesting! I’ll have to keep my eye out for them.
Tessa Dare has a new one in the Duchess Deal series coming out next week, I am excited for it!

Auntie, do you have advice for crochet beginners? Like, unique advice from a heathen or your perspective in general?
Patience. And don’t be afraid to fuck up.
That’s it.
Mom taught me when I was...maybe seven? I saw her doing it and wanted to learn. So she taught me the basics, gave me a pile of yarn, and let me go to town.
I just played around a lot, made some very simple potholders and similar, made myself a bag, fucked up a lot, learned that it’s no big deal to fuck it up, learned to rip out rows and redo it if I don’t like it.
I never learned to follow patterns. I’m still not great at following patterns. I can see what I want in my head, and know how to make it that shape. For clothing, I just fit it to myself or whoever I’m making it for a lot as I go.
It’s a work of love, to make a crochet item for someone else. You can put a little of that love into each stitch, and the hope that it keeps them safe and warm and brings them pleasure. I feel Frigg smiling on me, when I do it, and I find it calming.

Submission from @navigatingreality:
So I fell in love with CoT way back when I was a wee teenager. I recently rediscovered it browsing through Ao3 and I never realized how much “The Walls, The Wainscot, and The Mouse” influenced me and what happiness could be (a little cottage named Home). I took this picture on the Caribbean side of Cuba back in June, and I love the idea of Crowley walking through its crystal clear water and finding perfectly formed conch shells without cheating.
Hearing the phrase “way back when [you were] a wee teenager” is profound, because it drives home not only how long I’ve been working on this series, but how long this series has been a part of my readers’ lives.  I have literally watched many of you grow up.  I was 23 when I wrote A Better Place, which became the first installment, and I was 28 when I wrote The Walls, the Wainscot, and the Mouse, which became the second.
In the years between then and now, the other installments came almost faster than I could keep up.  Despite the somewhat more leisurely pace between about 2015 and now, I have never stopped working on this.  It runs constantly in the background of everything else I do, and even once I complete it, it will still be the most persistent piece of script in this overcrowded head of mine.  I will take thoughts of it to my grave.
Thank you so much for sharing this photo!  I was lucky enough to go shelling on Sanibel, finally, a year and a half ago, but I have not yet been to Cuba.

Any books that you finished and you wish you haven't spent your time with them? I'm finding that some books I have read weren't worth it and I could have been reading others... Happy New Year (in advance)!
There are two books I just hated but finished anyway, though there was much skimming for both, in the interests of full disclosure. The first was “Best Friends Forever” by Jennifer Weiner and the other was “The Book of the Mandolin Player” by Anne Britting Oleson.
The first one I sort of expected to dislike but read during the lazy part of summer when I was just kind of finding what I could instead of ordering more or going to the library. The second, based on title alone, I expected to like, but it rubbed me the wrong way the whole way through, and was just a general mess. Would not recommend either book, but particularly not the Oleson!

I laughed at the King of JJ theme song... same, tho, it's so fucking catchy
I think it’s beautiful how this is the only part of the post both of you fixated on lololol. (I totally went away and played it like three times just now ;____;)

9 (you know I love your dresses), 26, 32, and 97
9. where do you shop?
i’m too aesthetic for the high street so it’s a combination of thrift shops and independent designers? my fave places to shop are:
miss patina (at least half my workwear comes from there)
book of deer (fyi the girl who runs this is the sweetest girl in the world and she paints pictures on the envelopes when you order stuff)
pretty dress company (pricey, but the dresses are really high quality and gorgeous)
lindybop (really cheap dresses with cute prints!!)
british retro (the fit on these dresses are perfect and they have huge really full skirts)
i often go thrift shopping in brick lane which has some of the biggest vintage stores in the country, and also has the laden show room which is an amazing store where independent designers and fashion students sell their clothes (fyi it’s 90% sample sizes so not ideal for larger ladies)
oxfam has an online store and it is wonderful and for a good cause
(gosh, that got a little long!)
26. how many pillows do you sleep with?
two very fluffy ones
32. 3 favourite girls names?
aurora, viola and vienna (i like names that end in an a aparrently?)
97. dark, milk or white chocolate?
i am a chocolate purist who only likes dairy milk, i’m not fond of the other two at all, or of having anything in my chocolate

April minutes
This got really long so it gets a keep reading. Also THE BET:
In the amazing fic, Ragnarokr (Sasu centric) and in any subsequent sequels, the parties bet on the state of life at the end of the story of Itachi Uchiha:
navigatingrealities bets that he is dead by the end of the story
seagreeneyes and lurkersown bet that he is alive by the end of the story
The loser or losers must read a fic by the winner or winners’ chosing (triggers and squicks will be obviously taken into account)
The Novice by Taran Matharu (Harry Potter meets The Lord of the Rings meets Pokemon)
The Sin Eater’s Daughter by Melinda Salisbury (amazing covers!)
Red Rising by Pierce Brown (The Hunger Games meets space)
The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud (really good worldbuilding: magic and revolution)
A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab (Alternate realities + magic)
Red Sister by Mark  Lawrence (Lesbian warrior nuns!)
Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence (all the trigger warning; it’s the grimmest grimdark fantasy)
Magic’s Pawn by Mercedes Lackey (published in the late 80s, gay mc!)
Bitten by Kelley Armstrong (lady werewolf with a pack of male werewolves. A lot of trigger warning, proceed with caution, ask if you want specifics)
Lounge Books (web with book recs which have multiple reviews and also promote book offers (0.99) and should have a focus on diverse and LGBTQIA friendly books)
BookBub (Great Deals on Bestselling ebooks; you can select the genre you prefer and they send you offers)
Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge (a classic that I have never heard of before)
Odd Buddies (Hannigram: Sentinel!AU)
Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee (A lady General resurrect an old general that destroyed two great armies: the enemies’ and his own, dum-dum-DUM!)
Dreadnought by April Daniels (trans girl superhero!)
DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS  (the Lee/Gaara fic that everyone should read)
Clouded Mind and Heavy Heart (Dark NaruSasu)
Days (Football anime)
Strong Woman Do Bong Soon (K-drama about a woman thats superstrong and becomes the bodyguard of a CEO)
The Veretian Flytrap (Lamen ABO!AU)
Eyes Half Closed (Andrew/Neil, ABO!AU)
Dhoom 2 (the Bollywood movie, starring the Queen of England)
Bride and Prejudice (The Pride and Prejudice Bollywood adaptation, a.k.a Mr Bingley can get it)
Victory Lane (Toretto/Brian, soul mates!AU)
Life Sentence (Toretto/Brian, soul bound!AU, kinda?)
