whoever decided that 2 books from Natsuo Kirino will be 195mm tall and then the matching 3rd one will, for some reason, be 190mm…. you're bad at your job and you should feel bad.

Just One More Page Challenge Day 20: Set in a Country Other Than Yours.
While I am looking to joining the JET program, I do not currently live in Japan, hence my pick for this prompt!
I try to read a lot of translated works, but I am definitely partial to Japanese literature. I particularly love Out for how it explores the role of women in Japanese society through the framework of a murder-mystery thriller.

Can't believe the book i started reading because i wanted to read something that would disturb me out of my depression, that I found by searching for "most disturbing books" was actually really fucking disturbing. Shocked and appalled but also completely in awe

“Men live by rules they've made for themselves. And among those rules is one specifying that women are merely commodities for men to possess. A daughter belongs to her father, a wife to her husband. A woman's own desires present obstacles for men and are best ignored.”
- Natsuo Kirino’s ‘Grotesque.’

The reason you haven’t been able to overcome your sense of inferiority is not she was beautiful (and you weren’t) but because you could never share her sense of freedom - “Grotesque”, Natsuo Kirino (i’m in love)

Quote
Yayoi stared at the wedding ring on her finger as if she'd never seen it before. It was a plain platinum ring. She and Kenji had gone to a department store to pick it out one warm Sunday in early spring. He'd taken one look at the showcase and then asked for the most expensive one they had; after all, it was a once-in-a-lifetime purchase. She could still remember how flustered and happy she'd felt that day. Where had those feelings gone? What had happened to that happy couple? She had killed Kenji. The cry of pain that she'd refused to utter burst from her now as the enormity of her act sank in at last.
Natsuo Kirino, Out (trans. Stephen Snyder)
