📹Stories from By The Cut of Their Cloth digital exhibition at The Mixed Museum @themixedmuseum ZADIE SMITH PORTRAIT in ICONS OF COLOUR EXHIBITION 📢EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE CURATORIAL TEAM! Zadie Smith is a critically acclaimed writer of mixed Black Jamaican and white British heritage. Born in Willesden, in the London Borough of Brent, her debut novel ‘White Teeth’ explored the lives of interracial families and friendships in a post-war Willesden setting. At the end of 2019, @brentmuseumandarchives hosted the stunning exhibition ‘Icons of Colour: Portraits of Brent’s Change Makers.’ The exhibition celebrated Brent’s rich multicultural heritage by sharing stories of inspirational people of colour associated with the area. Created in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery (NPG), the exhibition displayed the stories alongside portraits connected to Brent from the NPG’s collection. One of the highlights of the exhibition was a new portrait of Zadie Smith by artist Toyin Ojih Odutola. Commissioned by the NPG, the painting – entitled ‘Sadie’, Smith’s given name - was displayed for the very first time in Zadie’s home borough of Brent. As part of the By The Cut of the Cloth project, project Creative Director @warren_reilly conducted interviews with key members of the curatorial team of the Icons of Colour exhibition: Francesca Laws (Schools Programmes Manager at the @nationalportraitgallery and Aisha Tahir (Heritage Assistant at Brent Museum and Archives). Visit our By The Cut of Their Cloth exhibition (link in bio) to read these EXCLUSIVE interviews. They can be found in our Multiracial Brent section, under ‘Icons of Colour’. #Willesden #Brent #Portrait #NationalPortraitGallery #art #artists #mixedrace #biracial #interracial #fiction #portrait #exclusiveinterview 📸Sadie image by @Toyin Ojih Odutola. 'Their plan was to go on a twelve week vaudeville tour together during 1950. They reasoned: "If no one will give us a job acting together, we'll give ourselves one."'—Eleanor Harris, The Real Story of Lucille Ball. Just a few weeks into the tour, Lucy learned that she was pregnant. It was decided to curtail her onstage antics (flopping around on her stomach) and to cancel the last six weeks of the tour. Despite every precaution, Lucy lost this pregnancy, but would become pregnant again 3 months later with daughter, Lucie. This image of Lucy, created by Philippe Halsman in 1950, is in the archives of The National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. #lucilleball #ilovelucy #vaudville #ontour #miscarriage #nationalportraitgallery #pregnancy #theaudition https://www.instagram.com/p/CetqjieOrgB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A modern-day hero who fights for girl’s education
Born in Mingora, Pakistan, Malala Yousafzai came to prominence in 2009 after writing about her life during the Taliban occupation of her town Swat Valley and the ban on girls' education. In October 2012, she was shot on the left side of her head in an attack by a Taliban gunman on her school bus. She recovered in Birmingham, UK, where she remained with her family. In 2013, Malala was awarded the International Children's Peace Prize, and in 2014, she became the youngest recipient (17) of the Nobel Peace Prize with Indian activist Kailash Satyarthi. She founded the Malala Fund in 2013, which is dedicated to giving all girls access to twelve years of free, safe, quality education. She recently graduated from Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Oxford, and her portrait hangs proudly in our Gallery.

CONGRATULATIONS BISA!

Reposted from @bisabutler No entertainment on earth can match a good story compellingly told
- #OctaviaButler (1947-2006)
This is history being made! This is the first time a portrait of an African American woman, created by an African American woman, curated by an African American woman and purchased by an African American collectors collective has been entered into the permanent collection of the #NationalPortraitGallery.
This story begins with me in 1993 reading Imago by Octavia Butler in the library at the National Portrait Gallery while I was a student at #HowardUniversity .
The library was a refuge of calm and a place where I could dream and aspire. The words of Octavia Butler allowed me to imagine a world beyond my reality- through the eyes of a Black woman.

It was serendipity to be asked by The New York Times to create a portrait for the cover of the Arts and Leisure section and the gorgeous photo by @alice_a2studio captivated me.

Then fate shined on me again when my Howard sister #RheaCombs, the chief curator at The National Portrait Gallery asked if the portrait was available.
I said yes immediately and she reached out to the Black Commissioners and Collectors group for financial support and as it goes the money was raised in 17 minutes!
I want to send a huge thank you to Curator Rhea Combs, and Director Kim Sajet. Thank you to the collective ; Taylor and Wemimo Abbey wemsabbey ; Sol Aponte @solaponte and Jennia Fredrique Aponte @jenniafredrique ; Mahari Y. Bailey @mahariyared, Esq.; Lyndon J. and Janine Sherman Barrois @srbarroislyndon ; Ingrid Best @ms_ibest ; Devin W. Blackburn, Esq.; George Fatheree @fathereeleeo and Azita Fatheree; Kenneth T. Little; Nike Opadiran; Ayesha D. Selden @ayeshaselden .
Thank you Sheryll Cashin and Marque Chambliss for hosting!
Thank you to my home team @johnnyjbutler_ and @ehubbs37 for always being there and giving 1000%. You are so appreciated.
