Cuisine
Meal times
The German proverb Iss dein Frühstück wie ein Kaiser, Mittagessen wie ein König und Abendessen wie ein Bettler (Eat your breakfast like an emperor, lunch like a king, and dine like a pauper) sums up the German outlook toward meals.
A typical day begins with Frühstück (breakfast), when people drink coffee, tea, or hot cocoa and eat muesli with yogurt or milk or bread with butter, jam, honey, chocolate and hazelnut spread, sausage, or cheese. Some people also drink juice and eat a boiled egg. This usually takes place between 6 and 8 a.m. Children usually eat a mid-morning snack at school called Pausenbrot (recess sandwich) that consists of a sandwich, a piece of fruit, or a muesli bar. The adult version is called Zwischenmahlzeit (in-between meal).
Mittagessen (lunch) takes place between 12 and 2 p.m. A typical lunch dish includes potato salad with sausage or meatballs and meat with potatoes or vegetables. It is common for family members and friends to gather between 3 and 5 p.m. for Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake).
Abendessen (dinner) is eaten between 6 and 7 p.m. Sometimes it is a light cold meal with bread and cold cuts, in which case it is called Abendbrot (evening bread). Dinner normally consists of a salad or soup, bread, cheese, meat or sausages, mustard, and pickles.
Dishes
German cuisine varies from region to region, and what is considered typically German is actually typical in the south, mainly Bavaria, where cuisine is similar to that in Austria. There are also international varieties such as doner kebab, pizza, sushi, Chinese food, Greek food, Indian food, and Vietnamese food.
Bread and sausage are staples of the German diet. There are about 600 types of bread and almost 1,500 sausage varieties, including Bratwurst (made of ground pork, beef, or veal and spices) and Weißwurst (white sausage eaten with sweet mustard, a pretzel, and beer).

National Chocolate Cake Day
Indulge in this delectable cocoa-based dessert, make the original pioneering recipe or put a modern twist on this classic by adding flavors like matcha.
There before you is the ultimate in birthday confections, a rich and luxurious chocolate cake with rich strawberry filling, you know it’s going to be a good day. Maybe you’re just coming into work, and some thoughtful soul has laid out a tray of chocolate cupcakes, each with their own design and one waiting for your mouth to wrap lovingly around it and fade away on a cocoa fueled holiday. However you like your chocolate cake, National Chocolate Cake Day gives you an excuse to indulge as deeply as you’d like!
History of National Chocolate Cake Day
Chocolate cake has been with us just over 150 years, having first come on the scene in 1764, when it was discovered that grinding cocoa beans between heavy stones produced cocoa powder, which could then become chocolate. 60 years would pass before Conrad Van Houten discovered a method by which he could mechanically extract fat from the cacao liquor which produced cacao butter. Long story short, this man is the reason that chocolate is actually affordable, and we all have him to thank for it!
From this point forward the types of cake and techniques involved in making them just kept expanding, so there are dozens of kinds of cake on top of the original ‘traditional’ chocolate cake. From the Black Forest cake with its cherries to the German Chocolate Cake with its rich coconut pecan frosting, new types are being invented all the time, and chocolate still reigns as King.
In the early days, people didn’t consume chocolate as a solid snack we do today in the form of bars or cakes. During the era of the 1830s and 1840s, it was primarily a drink that you mixed with water. Furthermore, it wasn’t even sweet. The original chocolate drinkers would often make up a savory, almost bitter beverage that they would typically consume early in the morning.
The first verifiable recipe for chocolate cake appeared in Eliza Leslie’s 1847 cookbook. The actual formula, however, wasn’t quite what we’d recognize as a chocolate cake today. Leslie’s recipe called for chopped pieces of chocolate inserted into a plain sponge, instead of adding cocoa powder to the mix itself. You can imagine, though, how delicious this thing would have tasted. There would have been tiny chunks of melted chocolate throughout its core, providing a melt-in-the-mouth experience people would still very much enjoy today.
Over the years, authors and cooks such as Maria Parloa added their own twists on the chocolate cake. They began incorporating all of the trappings of the modern version we’d recognize today. First came the frosting, followed by the inclusion of de-fatted cocoa powder into the batter mix. After that came a range of chocolatey fillings, designed to make the dessert even more delightful.
By the 1920s, the humble chocolate cake had become mainstream, and manufacturers began to sell the recipe outright. O. Duff and Sons released the first boxed chocolate cake, ready to eat – no baking required. And in 1947, Betty Crocker released a pre-made chocolate cake mix. Ultimately, making chocolate cake became more straightforward. Almost anyone could do it, even if they lacked experience in the kitchen.
Chocolate cake became a part of the culture increasingly throughout the late twentieth century and early 21st, leading to the development of National Chocolate Cake Day. This particular day was designed as an opportunity for chocolate and cake lovers to pay homage to this chance invention. Remember, it was only with the discovery that sweetening chocolate created a delicious dish that we even have this most beloved of desserts.
National Chocolate Cake Day Timeline
1764 Cocoa beans are ground between stones to make chocolate
Dr. James Baker financially backs the production of grinding cocoa beans to make chocolate, which would eventually become an important ingredient in chocolate cake. This is the beginning of the company still known as Baker’s chocolate.
1847 First recipe for chocolate cake is printed
The Ladies Receipt Book by Eliza Leslie (of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA) is the first to print a recipe for chocolate cake. While other cakes containing chocolate were referred to or known of previously, this is the first recorded recipe for the public.
1948 Pilsbury launches first boxed chocolate cake mix
Motivated by making life easier for women in the kitchen, the idea for a powdered cake mix comes in the 1930s, but is set aside for a time due to WWII. It is picked up again after the war and Pilsbury is one of many companies trying to market the product.
1957 First published recipe for German Chocolate Cake appears
Created in the United States using the “German’s” brand of chocolate, this cake covered in coconut-caramel frosting is featured in the Dallas Morning Star newspaper.
1967 First Ding Dongs are produced
Making little chocolate cakes accessible to just about anyone, even on the go, Hostess Brands supplies North America with these little cream filled, chocolate covered cakes. About the size of hockey pucks (but a bit taller), in Canada they are known as King Dons.
How to celebrate National Chocolate Cake Day
The way to celebrate National Chocolate Cake Day is deliciously simple and perfect.
Throughout your day, incorporate as many types of chocolate cake as you can! Take chocolate cake batter and use it to make chocolate pancakes in the morning, topped with caramel syrup and whipped cream. Use the rest of the batter to produce chocolate cupcakes, place a strawberry in the center of each one and take them to work to share with your workmates.
Then when you get home, go ahead and go all out and serve yourself up a big old slice of chocolate cake for dessert, and then eat it first. After all, when it comes to dessert you really shouldn’t wait, who knows what could happen during dinner! National Chocolate Cake Day is all about this delicious treat, so don’t make yourself shirk one opportunity to wrap your lips around another delectable bite of these cocoa-rich concoctions!
Don’t forget, though; National Chocolate Cake Day is an opportunity for you to be adventurous. You don’t have to stick with today’s boxed cakes or even modern recipes. What about digging out Eliza Leslie’s original 1847 cookbook and trying the very first official chocolate cake for yourself? You can relive the experience of the early pioneers of the art, experiencing the cakes that they enjoyed at the dawn of the chocolate cake era.
Another idea is to make a super contemporary chocolate cake that includes state-of-the-art flavor fusions. You could try all sorts of combinations, everything from matcha to pistachio. National Chocolate Cake Day is a chance for you to experiment with exciting chocolate twists. Then, once you’re finished in the kitchen, you can serve your creations to your friends to see what they think. Just be prepared for some honest feedback! Everyone has their own idea of how the perfect chocolate cake should taste.

THE APPLICATION
was that ADLER BARNES i saw by the lighthouse today? i heard that the THIRTY THREE year old who has been in nightrest for ONE WEEK and works  as a  VETERINARY TECHNICIAN has a reputation of being UPLIFTING, but also ANXIOUS. they reside in ASHMORE & people in town usually associate them with LEATHER BIKE JACKET HANGING IN HIS CLOSET, BABY BLANKET TUCKED AND HIDDEN UNDER HIS PILLOW, WRITTEN LETTERS TO HIS CHILDHOOD SELF HE’S NEVER READ. let’s hope the killer doesn’t go after them next.
THE HEADCANONS
In his spare time, Adler likes to fish. You can find him on the river watching the water ripples underneath the stars.
He doesn't know much about his family as he was placed in foster care at six months old. All he knows is moving from house to house.
While he doesn't quite know how he feels about being a father, Adler wouldn't mind having children. The responsibility scares him slightly, but he wants to provide a safe space for children that he never had.
A true animal lover at heart, Adler has had several pets growing up. While they were never allowed in his household, he would be known to be the 'owner' of wild animals growing up; feeding them concoctions he would create from leftovers in his houses.
Adler has never loved holidays, but New Year's Day has always been his favorite. He finds himself looking forward to the change it provides every year.
Adler was a terrible student. He went to school every day, but regardless of how much he tried, he barely passed every year until he reached high school. That's the first time anyone ever really gave him the chance and he felt he could finally allow himself to pursue a future that was receivable.
THE SUMMARY
Adler grew up in the foster care system - his mother was a teenager when he was born - after none of his biological family would take him. He bounced from house to house, seeing more than thirty by the time he made it to high school. That's when he met the people he calls his parents; both were older at the time with children graduating college and getting married, but they loved Adler like he was their own. It was the first time he'd had any real sense of a family, and he knew he would do anything to make them proud. That's when he moved to Salem after bouncing from town to town his entire life, and after graduating with honors, he moved onto college, getting an associate's degree in veterinary medicine; he'd always loved animals and wanted nothing more than to be able to take care of them. During this time is when he met Selin. The two dated, but Adler has commitment issues and broke it off when he got scared. A year later the two were married in Vegas a year ago, telling no one that they'd done it. After a year of being married, She left, signed divorce papers, and now a year later Adler is in the same town as her - divorced papers unsigned - unknowingly to him.

Day 27-28
Today is Husband’s birthday, so we of course spent time doing laundry and putting on the tire we got fixed. Although it sucked away much of the morning, we were able to have a great rest of the day. First, we went to Leavenworth, a mock Bavarian Germany town, filled with decorated buildings, German food, and all the tourist activities you can think of.
Tumblr media
We visited a few shops, like Krampus Kave, the local gaming store, and ate decent German food at Ludwig’s. Into the mountains we found Wenatchee State Park, which had a windy and gorgeous beach where we sat and read, watching the windsurfers and a wildfire on the other bank.
Tumblr media
I’ve started Jaws by Peter Benchley and I must say, I wasn’t very excited about it, but from the first paragraph on this has kept me enraptured and I’ve seriously been enjoying it.
Tumblr media
We headed back into Leavenworth for a birthday desert; a delicious German Chocolate Cake, German Apple Cake, and an apple cider to celebrate the German heritage Husband didn’t know he had until recently. The next day we left our hotel and headed back into the Snuggly Sanctum of Snuggle (Copyright Ashton, 2022) and onto North Cascades National Park.
Tumblr media
We camped at Marble Creek and enjoyed the views of the mountains and Diablo Lake on our way in. I had planned this trip in order to see this specific park, since I had heard of its glory and that it’s the most under-visited National Park in the lower 48. So far, every trailhead has been busy and full just as any other major park I’ve been too, so I’m expecting that like us, others have heard this and are coming out in droves to see and experience such a beautiful place.
Tumblr media
Taking a hike tomorrow,
Haylan

White, milk or dark chocolate?: White
Whats your favourite type of cake?: Red velvet.
Whats your 3rd favourite animal?: Crested pigeon.

What's a fun fact to tell at parties?: My parents are using me as their own personal retirement fund. That's not a fun fact, but it does occupy my mind a lot these days, and maybe that's why I'm not invited to parties anymore.

Describe your favourite jumper?: Warm, blue, and large but also not overwhelmingly heavy.

Are you scared of space?: Yes.
Can you knit?: No.
What's the fanciest restaurant youve ever been too?: I feel like that's a question for a) someone whose parents didn't drag him to the OPERA on a regular basis, and b) someone who actually has a set of criteria for determining the relative fanciness of restaurants.

Have you ever been on a cruise?: Nope.
