Remote Luxury in the Colorado Mountains: Gateway Canyons Resort Is Like Nowhere Else
Remote Luxury in the Colorado Mountains: Gateway Canyons Resort Is Like Nowhere Else
I’m often asked if I prefer adventure to luxury travel.  I have no answer: Every journey is different, and I’m not defined by a style.  Wherever I may roam, my trips are unpredictable.  I’m as comfortable exploring an emerging wine region in Portugal as I am riding a zipline through a cloud forest in Costa Rica.  At Colorado’s Gateway Canyons Resort & Spa, I discovered that it’s possible to blend…

Rio Grande Ski Train Coach 1017 Denver Union Station by John Rus Via Flickr: Light snow is falling as Rio Grande Ski Train coach 1017 waits out the evening of February 2, 1985 at Denver Union Station.
Come morning, skiers will arrive for a scenic trip on the former D&SL "Moffat Road" to the slopes at Winter Park aboard the vintage ex Northern Pacific cars.
Purchased by the Rio Grande in 1960, the 71' Pullman coaches, (built in 1915), were operated until sold to the Napa Valley Wine Train in 1987.

Postcards from Snagglepuss
Napa Valley, eat your heart out!
SOMEWHERE IN THE FINGER LAKES WINE COUNTRY OF UPSTATE NEW YORK: So here we are, our motley little company of vagabonds in our new motorhome-centrist model of reportage, in a modest little winery in a rather interesting sort of place to associate with wine: Upstate New York, the Finger Lakes country even ... and to know that such has had Bacchanalian associations since just before the Civil War, one winery in Hammondsport having been registered as early as 1861, and even winning accolades as early as the 1890's for producing sparkling wines rivalling those of France's Champagne district!
At any rate, our company, as led by yours truly and Huckleberry Hound, find ourselves in the tasting rooms of a decent little winery beside the shores of Seneca Lake, such being part of a group of narrow, yet substantial, lakes of glacial origin in central New York, roughly encompassing the region between Syracuse and Rochester ... a winery as is pretty much starting to come noticed, in particular for some non-alcoholic wines such as we could get used to on occasion. After all, spare us your Night Train, your Thunderbird, your Wild Irish Rose even; we're Funtastics, and we're practically above such "fortified" nonsense as would make Bacchus cry!
At any rate, our crew is being guided through some chartucerie chosen to complement some non-alcoholic white wines such as best go with a table of Italian salames and proscuitto, German summer sausage, English water crackers and Norwegian Jarlsberg cheese ... and for sheer playfulness, Wally Gator couldn't resist the sheer experience of a winery tasting room for the first time!
"Though I have to admit, don't you know," Wally remarked, "my own tastes have tended to Old-School Floridian--Cuban sandwiches, Keys conch stew, battered shrimp and hush puppies, key lime pie, Caribbean rum cake and some hearty espresso in the Cuban manner!"
"I take it," Huck remarked, "the sort as is lovingly deep roasted and brewed on one of those stovetop espresso pots."
"Who'd have guessed?" was how Wally remarked.
As for Yogi and Boo-Boo, those ursine buddies were a little surprised by "such a fancy cheese-and-crackers setup," as Yogi parsed it, adding, "I have to acknowledge that back in Jellystone, we managed to sneak off some cheese, sausage and crackers from tourist types on occasion--"
To which Boo-Boo added, "With the inevitable objections from tourists and the rangers, no doubt."
"Such is life," said I as the sensation of such an unlikely sort of non-alcoholic white wine passed through my palate.
"At least it's a step ahead of bananas almost constantly" was how Magilla Gorilla parsed things while unto another pairing of some hunter's sausage and cheese onto a savoury cracker, adding "But who could resist such an unlikely wine as this?" (Which had a waiter serving our tasting room table explain that the wine was non-alcoholic.)
"Quite delectable," Huckleberry Hound remarked in his laid-back Southern manner, "to say the least." Especially considering that the width of Seneca Lake is barely a mile or so between shores.
(Oh, and did I mention the "I [Love] NY" buttons handed out in the end?)

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day.
The Duchess Of Sussex has discussed the trope of ‘the angry black woman’ in the latest episode of her Archetypes podcast. Meghan who – allegedly – has been characterised by royal aides as a “rude bully”, says she finds herself “cowering and tip-toeing into a room” because she worries about how she might be perceived by others. Interesting. I’m sure Harry was principally attracted to her because she was a “rude bully”. Not! This reminds me of a group of black, female wine lovers, who were on the Napa Valley train, excitedly looking forward to a holiday of wine-tasting (and buying!) What happened? They got thrown off the train because some white people said they were making too much noise and destroying the sanctity of the Napa Valley experience. This is very ugly cultural warfare. It’s not your way or it’s not your style, so you shut it down!
Temporary traffic lights are the bane of everybody’s life. Sometimes they’re necessary? Sometimes they’re erected just to cause frustration and misery? Manor Park Road is a crucial road than runs through Harlesden. Cars come off the North Circular with the express purpose of getting on to the Harrow Road and down into Central London. The 18 bus carrying people from Sudbury to Euston station has to come down Manor Park Road. Right now, during rush hour, we don’t just have temporary traffic lights, we have temporary paralysis and many non-productive hours! On Monday, I went to pick up The Trouble from the station and, after 15 minutes, I called her and said, “I can’t get to you! Start walking home!” I then tried to get home. No joy! The side roads and the side roads off the side roads were jammed with cars trying to get out of traffic. Our son called to say he’d been stuck on Neasden roundabout for 20 minutes! Just when you thought life couldn’t get any worse, the boss of some construction company makes it worse!
On Tuesday, WhatsApp went down for two hours and approximately two billion WhatsApp users lost their mind! And now they want answers from Facebook owners Meta! Show me a business that runs smoothly 24 hours of every day, 365 days of every year. It doesn’t exist. Show me a person that is totally efficient 24 hours of every day, 365 days of every year. Do me a favour!
University bosses have come under fire after they stopped using students’ names for their emails and usernames because it is not ‘inclusive’. The practice has been scrapped for reasons that include people changing gender part way through their course, the University Of York said. No, this is not a joke.
This time last Thursday, I said, don’t worry about Cruella Craverman. She’ll be back in an influential job in no time. And, lo and behold, Fishi Ballsack has appointed her Home Secretary and that really tells you all you need to know about him. If he’s endorsing pain, torture and cruelty, creating a functioning economy is probably not top of his priority list. Cruella doesn’t just want to restrict your human rights; she wants to deport you! As in every authoritarian state, dissenters are dealt with!
Yesterday’s status and comments was again dominated by farting and, as I listened to Luther’s ‘Never Too Much’ on Mi-Breakfast, I was amused by the lyrics. What if Luther sang, “ Woke up today, looked at your picture, just to get me started/The beans last night were very tasty but I almost farted.”
Have a throbbing and thrusting Thursday (with hopefully a few thrills through your thoroughfare?) I love you all.

Napa Valley Vine Trail, CA (No. 4)
It’s remarkable how a single trail brings together an entire region. As California’s Napa Valley Vine Trail grows to reach its ultimate 47-mile potential, community members and visitors realize the beauty of connectivity and accessibility.
Chuck McMinn, founder and president of the Napa Valley Vine Trail Coalition, championed the trail—a vision of practicality and aesthetics—from the beginning. When vacationing throughout the world, McMinn says he and his wife always made it a point to rent bicycles to explore the region. Living in the scenic Napa Valley, he said it struck him, “Why don’t we have a trail like these other places?”
Napa Valley is synonymous with the green, rolling hillsides of classic wine country. There’s a particular appeal to walking or biking between the long-established vineyards, creating a deeper relationship between the people utilizing the trail with the grape growers and vintners who are the heart of the region.
Launched in 2008, the trail currently covers nearly 20 miles, which are open in a few disconnected sections. Beginning in Vallejo, the trail travels north through the City of Napa and its Rail Arts District, an outdoor art exhibit. Lined with vineyards, the paved pathway continues to Yountville, paralleling the Napa Valley Wine Train and State Route 29, offering a safer alternative to sharing the road with vehicles.
In 2022, the gap between Vallejo and the City of American Canyon on the southern end of the route, as well as the section between St. Helena and Calistoga on the northern end, will open, adding another 12 miles. The remaining 15 miles is in the works. By the project’s completion, anticipated by 2025, the Vine Trail will connect two counties (Napa and Solano), five cities and one town, and will link to two expansive regional projects, the Bay Area Ridge Trail and the San Francisco Bay Trail.
“I can’t say enough good things about this project,” said Joel King, board member of the Napa County Bicycle Coalition and avid Vine Trail cyclist. “There are so many benefits.”
King said prior to his retirement, he bicycled daily to work, and now appreciates the opportunity to pedal into town for errands, as well as use the trail for recreation. Although King is a lifelong bicycling enthusiast, the Napa Valley Vine Trail holds an appeal for all types of trail users, particularly because many residents live within just a half-mile from the route.
“You see a lot of regular people riding on it,” commented King. “The Vine Trail makes it so easy for people to get on the trail and go. You can go car free through the entire Napa Valley.”

Craun, a classically trained artist, philanthropist and co-founder of the cult wine powerhouse Memento Mori, is now focused on bridging the two worlds of fine wine and tequila. Though the flavor profiles could hardly be more different, El Negocio underscores the…

Napa Valley
This morning we decided to do a bit of a drive north of San Francisco to the wine region of Napa Valley. This also allowed us to do a round trip over various bridges in the bay starting with the Bay Bridge and then north into the Napa area where we stopped for breakfast. There were so many wineries and vineyards it was difficult to keep up!
We then turned east towards the hills and our route took us over the ridge into the adjoining Cappell Valley which we followed to Lake Hennessey and then back to St Helena and then the route back south through Zinfandel. The number of vineyards was astonishing and we also saw the Napa Valley Wine Train which has got to be a must if we return to the area.
Due to slightly dodgy stomachs, we decided to return to the city, which was just as well as the rain decided to set in, which had been promised. We came back via the San Pablo Bay road which allowed us to see a fair bit of birdlife, including an egret sitting right next to the road and lanes of traffic, and then up and over Golden Gate bridge which was clear at the time.
Back at the hotel we got some stuff for another bed picnic tonight whilst packing all the stuff ready for the next two days of flying as we cross the International date line going this way and lose a day but even so we still leave tomorrow evening for Auckland and then fly straight on Sunday to Melbourne. Tomorrow we intend heading to Sausalito for an early lunch before heading to the airport and if we get time and the weather is reasonable to go to Muir Woods but the forecast isn't great.
