I’ve realized something about many of my favorite characters:

- Scorpia (She-Ra)

- Izzy Hands (OFMD)

- Camina Drummer (The Expanse)

They’re all morally ambiguous people who are loyal to a fault and who have unrequited gay crushes. Somehow, this manages to reel me in almost immediately. It doesn’t matter if their crush is also gay and already part of an adorable ship that’s objectively much better for them. Nope. Out of the way, I’m here to support my blorbo in their hopeless pining.

I’m going to give partial credit to Ymir (Attack on Titan), whose crush is basically required but who still gets fucked over by the narrative, and Guillermo De La Cruz (What We Do in the Shadows) who has had a seemingly unrequited crush, but who I suspect will ultimately get rewarded by the narrative similarly to Martin Blackwood (The Magnus Archives). They’re also probably my favorites in their shows. Unfortunately Martin himself never quite managed to make my favs, probably because I knew going in that JonMartin would be canon and because JonElias just looked too much like Hannigram for me to stay away from it.

When Drummer received a scholarship to attend Luna University, she almost turned it down. She didn’t want to be the Inners’ charity case, something they could look at and make themselves feel better about how they treated the Belt.

Ultimately, Fred talked her out of it. Told her the Belt needed her to learn the skills to build itself up, to free itself. “Besides,” he said. “The university is near the UNN Bush Naval Yards. Might be interesting to see what they’re building.”

Drummer hated being surrounded by the Inners, their arrogance. Hated how the Earthers were so careless, even in Luna’s vacuum. But she was even more disappointed in her fellow Belters covering their tattoos, hiding their accents.

Second semester she was in some bullshit chemistry class that she needed to take to get the advanced classes she was interested in. It was bullshit until she was assigned her lab partner. Naomi was gorgeous, brilliant and proudly displayed her Belter tattoos.

They attacked that course like it was an unguarded, lost cargo ship. In the lab, they developed an easy rapport and finished the simplistic tasks quickly. They’d then go to lunch and talk until Naomi’s next class, two hours later. Drummer found out that Naomi ended up on Luna because she had an Earther boyfriend who had changed his mind and entered the UN Navy. Dumped his ass but figured she’d get her engineering degree.

And when Naomi asked her to a club, Drummer thought nothing of dancing with her, escorting her to her dorm room and kissing her goodnight.

Redneck Neighbor Doug: Why Belters are Space Cajuns

If Mandalorians are space rednecks, then Belters from The Expanse are space Cajuns. This is not up for debate, according to the nerdiest Southern man of all time, my neighbor Doug, who, it turns out, loves this show too. I'm 99% sure he's also a TNG and Battlestar fan, but that would just kill me with exhaustion if we went into full deets about it.

Onto our friends in the Belt and why they have so much in common with the French-Americans who reside in the wilder parts of the deep American south of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

I will elucidate now, via Doug, on what Belters and Cajuns do that make them…them:

They make do: First thing we see in the entire series is how much the Belters are royally crapped on by life. They live in space, which permanently alters their bodies, to the point where they can not survive on a planet. To quote, “Belters work the docks, loading and unloading precious cargo…never meant for us”. They don’t have the wealth of Earth or the incredible military drive of Mars, but they’re scrappy, innovative, and do what they can to survive, whether it’s by smuggling, pirating, or allying themselves with powerful folks. Like the French folks in Acadia who got flung from their homes to the bayous of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, who scrape a living by fishing, boatmaking, bartending, and/or serving as a member of the X-Men. Cajuns and Belters do what they can to survive, giving them an edge that others do not have.

They party hard: Belters love drinking, having parties on their ships and in port, banging everyone on the crew, and overall just being wild. After all, you never know when you’re going to get your air or water cut off by the Inners, might as well live it up. And Cajuns, well, they invented Mardi Gras and their saying is ‘Laissez les bons temps rouler’ or ‘let the good times roll’. Life isn’t easy on a swamp that is constantly wacked by floods or hurricanes, but they party as much as they can. Just like the Belters.

Their women: Some of the best damn characters in the series are the angry ladies of the Belt (Camina Drummer and Naomi Nagata). Man, they something else. They’re loving, fierce, smart, crazy, and can go from Bambi to Banshee in five seconds. Cajun women love to host parties, help with church, and cook and make an amazing roux from dirt and crayfish, but God help you if you piss one off. Those pot carrying arms can snap a neck quicker than a blue crab shell. 

They speak in patois: Ever heard Cajun French? It ain’t from Paris, that’s for sure. It’s mixed up and raw and beautiful in its own right, and for many generations, it was looked down upon by English-speaking neighbors. Belter creole is similar, a smashed up beauty of a language that has come out of life in space, filled with English, Chinese, Farsi, German, Hindi, and other languages. It even has a similar lilt to the bayou! 

They are ungovernable: There’s a reason the Cajuns were never quite able to fully rebel against the various governments that took over their swampy goodtimes. They’re loyal to each other and their land, and that’s about it. Belters are the same–they’ve tried with the OPA, and even then, there’s different factions and squabbling (Anderson Dawes vs Fred Johnson, for example) and it’s only until there’s a genuine, alien threat to they get all united (plus Camina Drummer comes to power, but that’s neither here nor there). 

They’re good at figuring out solutions: Cajuns live in gator and snake infested swamps that flood and hurricanes smash through routinely. But they live and thrive regardless, with their pirogues and their bridges and their houses on the water. Same with Belters: their lives are lived in space, with crappy gravity and air. But they’re scrappy and tough and figure out how to survive. A Redditor pointed out that many of the more ambitious, driven Earthers left generations ago to live on the Belt, as the option was staying on Earth and living on an increasingly overcrowded, shitty planet. Not unlike the ancestors of the Cajuns who left France. 

The Spice Must Flow: Belters have to pack their shitty food full of peppers and spices to make it palatable, to the point one of the nicknames for their most famous dishes is called ‘red kibble’. And have you ever had proper Cajun food? Crawfish, alligator, boudin, and frogs are freaking amazing when done properly, although my fancy British friends were horrified that I enjoyed them. Pass me them mudbugs with some Cachere’s seasoning, collards, and corn, I wanna feel the pain. 

They work in weird and hard places: See above for both Belters and Cajuns. Jobs Cajuns have had range from oil fields to swamps to cities filled with yellow fever. But they take it and have a good sense of humor about it. Same with Belters–they work on rough ships, in radiation filled places in space, and don’t bitch about it. To quote the gaunt Belter, ‘They built the solar system on our backs’. 

Everything and anything can be used as a weapon: A gun? Peshang! Guns are for fancy Inners. Belters will use guns, AND pipes, chairs, each other, elevators, fists, a toothbrush, shives, you name it, they’ve killed with it. They’re tough and scrappy, and so are the Cajuns, whose fights are notorious in the bayou and beyond. Don’t mess with them. 

So yeah, Space Cajuns.

this weekend i watched iwtv, the terror (first half very beautiful and comprehendable, second half i have some questions), the bear (everything tumblr said it was), and the expanse (almost done the second season)

some thots on the expanse so far

i wasn’t sure i liked most of the first season, but was stuck in bed, so i powered through it. and i miss shitty cable sci-fi. it’s the first space show i’ve seen since sgu, lmao.

the first season very much Feels Like A Book. that way books are so particular about all the threads connecting, where television (esp kinda b sci-fi shows) are more lax. this is especially charming.

the expanse has a very small amount of fanfic? i am avoiding spoilers, i just wanted to see!, but it’s f/f is the biggest category? and the top ship is the hot milf? god is good? i love chrisjen. holy shit.

i also do not know anyones name and spoiled myself trying to look some up. you should not pay for streaming services ever, and esp not pr*me who gives you a fucking ad in between each eps, but on the other hand if you want to know characters names without looking them up on the database where you will learn the number of eps they’re in, or a wiki which will spoil everything in a single sentence, the nightmare x-ray gimmick is actually pretty useful. sorry.

i just wanted to know drummer’s name so i could more adequately imagine her and naomi getting married in the mormon chapel (slow burn, 200k, au) (racket ball after game, 5k, explicit) (anarchist book club coffee shop au, 20k, archive locked).

took a lil break because i am currently frustrated with naomi’s characterization, where it doesn’t feel like she’s being given the room to be the moral centrepiece but actually just a wet blanket. like. this truncated version of her is making me want to scream. she’s not that!!!! and it’s so close to being a good continuation of her arc but fails to be and it’s driving me to violence.

trying to imagine changes that would have taken up the same amount of screen time but would have been more effective:

having the crew bust in to the aid ship in 2x09 the weeping somnambulist, being like: i am holden, saver of worlds, instead of mars cosplay. using this to really lead in to naomi’s distaste for Causes and jim’s newfound expediency through violence. having the pirates only go for the 10% (20% if you want to give a bone to jim, which i don’t) and not be especially murderous, (which also reaffirms the mundanity of this kind of violence, it’s structural) and then still having jim choose to be the hero to deleterious effect. those scenes dragged for a thousand years and blew chunks, and they seriously undercut naomi’s character and politics (and the politics of the show).

like. wrt the vulture preying on families looking to get reunited with stolen security access. is that the best example of violence as expediency and holden’s impaired judgement coming to align with amos (my belovéd)? i would personally break his legs for free. which again leaves…. wet blanket :(

idk i just think that would be a more useful base to cut from. idk!!! just really truncated her!!! the 10 second scene of her and pax mentioning her lost son in the hallway. like. the narrative about state experimentation on children doesn’t care about these kids at all huh.

a final note: having miller and julie die naked while being consumed by the alien life force, embracing a nuclear bomb is so comically close to being My Shit™ but i do not condone heterosexuality like that. also having an ingenue and not having her be gay about it is simply bad writing. and finally having her naked in her final scene (which is also the only one where we see her in real time) be naked (literal male gaze) is just so fucking boring. if they weren’t going to put her in the razorback gear (and then transforming to her dead self as they embraced etc) they should have just used the consumed state. i also hated that her solar plexus was exposed. we deserve so much better than that.

naomi x drummer vs naomi x holden?

This one is hard! I really don't ship much of anything in The Expanse, I never felt like there was much romantic chemistry with anyone? Though Drummer is something of an exception.

I think probably I ship Naomi/Drummer more, but it's not a canon where I care enough about either ship to have a super strong preference! But at the very least, their friendship and push-and-pull is more important and central for me than Naomi and Holden's relationship.

For the prompt list; Chrisjen x Bobbie, number 20. "If you die, I'll kill you" 😌😌

Chrisjen knew that their plan was for the best. Bobbie’d go batshit crazy if she was cooped up on a ship orbiting Earth as Chrisjen sat in meeting after meeting. Besides, she needed someone she could trust out in the Belt and beyond. It certainly wasn’t Camina Drummer or James Holden.

With all that being said, now that it was time for Bobbie to leave it was fucking hard to let her go. She could see Bobbie struggling, as she set her duffle near the Rocinante’s entrance. It was insufferably endearing at how she was trying to hide her enthusiasm for the adventure ahead, even as she wrapped her arms around Chrisjen’s waist.

Chrisjen hated the way her own lower lip trembled. She never could tame that one give away of her emotions, not matter how often her father had admonished her to tame it. She rested her forehead against Bobbie’s chest, listening to her breathe.

“I’ll miss you, ma’am,” Bobbie said, her voice thicker than usual.

“Be safe, Bobbie.” She turned her face to look at her. “I know that’s a fucking impossible order, so I’ll just say that if you die out there, I’ll kill you.”

Bobbie chuckled and leaned down to kiss her. The events of the past year had forced Chrisjen to take nothing for granted and she found herself clinging to Bobbie, trying to memorize the feel of this kiss.

“Oh hey, Chrissie, do I get a good bye kiss, too?” And fucking Burton ended the moment.

Bobbie pulled away with a groan. “In your fucking dreams, Amos.”

“Most likely.”

Chrisjen rolled her eyes and raised up on her tiptoes to give Bobbie one brief kiss to the lips. “Don’t kill anyone while I’m away, ma’am.”

Reluctantly, Chrisjen stepped away from Bobbie. She heard Holden and Naomi enter. “If she dies, I’ll fucking kill.you, too, Holden.”

“I’ll keep that in mind,” Holden responded.

Bobbie laughed and picked up her duffle. “Go ahead, ma’am. Go save Earth.”

Chrisjen nodded and watched her walk into the ship.
