Firestar was pretty young when he became leader and he had seen, what, four warrior ceremonies before?
So if there had been any naming traditions in the clan (such as -claw never being used for medicine cats but reversed with names that warriors can’t get, because medicine cats name their own apprentices) he wouldn’t have known.
And I’m sooo in for the sheer drama of a young Firestar, in the midst of all the other drama (Tigerstar, Tigerclan, hounds killing cats, Tawnypaw leaving, Feather Storm and Mistyfoot being around because of the purge in Tigerclan etc etc) offending the whole clan by giving a name that is considered a bad omen or inappropriate or something.
Then again if you can name a cat Lostface and the only thing that people seem to find weird in that is that the cat bearing that name didn’t like it, I can’t imagine what would be considered inappropriate.
But like, naming Brambleclaw after his blood-thirsty father could have made a few people frowning.
What if giving the “fall” suffix to someone who’s the sole survivor of their litter is considered a bad omen because the other “fell”? What if giving the suffix “flight” to someone with a prefix that isn’t a bird is considered arrogance/pointing the newly warriored arrogance? What if giving the same suffix to two siblings, even not littermates (like Darkstripe and Graystripe, or Lilyheart and Cinderheart, even if three of these four cats were named by other leaders) is considered insulting? What if using the same sets of suffixes multiple times is considered insulting too? (for example, if Berrynose had been named Berryfur, it would have been the same set of suffixes for the litter as for Sootfur, Rainwhisker and Sorreltail)
What if deciding the mentors without the parents’ approval (we saw Bluestar talk to the queens in the first arc about mentors at some point iirc) was considered the first step of a decadent area for the clan as the leader was starting not to take anyone’s opinion into consideration? Likewise, what if starting the apprentice ceremony without a warning was considered insulting to the parents, the mentors and the kits, because it didn’t let them any time to prepare?
I. Want. More. Drama. Linked. To traditions Firestar might have not known because he hadn’t been in the clan that long.

what decides if a cat gets a pattern suffix vs. fur/pelt? Because i can see tortoiseshell cats on the allegiances who got -fur/pelt instead of -dapple, like Wigeonfur and Mosspelt (that is, if i understand the meaning of "dapple" as a non native speaker xD) and bicolor cats who didnt get -patch
The usual rule is that if the prefix already describes a pattern, the suffix also describing that pattern would be redundant. For example, Cherry- means "a brown tortoiseshell", so it's very unlikely for that cat to be named Cherrydapple or Cherryspeck because, well, you already know she's dappled/speckled just from her prefix. Same goes for bicolor cats - a lot of bicolor names are specific to that singular definition of (color) with white, so using -patch is more rare than you'd expect (RiverClan does often use names that don't imply white coloring for the sake of variety in their very-much-bi-or-tricolored community, but since everyone kind of expects that from them and knows to guess that Gingerpaw of RiverClan is actually ginger-and-white, -patch doesn't see a lot of use there either).
There are exceptions to this rule, as there are to many things in this culture - if a particular name sounds good when paired with a pattern suffix, the leader may be inclined to name the up-and-coming warrior accordingly (consulting them first, of course); or a cat may develop starker markings as they age, meaning their prefix doesn't quite showcase what they look like as an adult. But overall, you're very unlikely to meet a Brindlespot or Starkstripe. It's like someone's first and middle/last name being the same thing. Doesn't always work that well.

Loner joining Skyclan: "Hi everyone my name's sledgehammer''
Leafstar (probably): ''two parts name, sounds right, let's not change it''.
Kittypet joining Skyclan: "Hi everyone my name's Marmalade."
Leafstar (probably): "No idea what it means. Let's call you Marmaladewhisker".
Rogue joining Skyclan: "Hi everyone my name's Robert"
Leafstar (probably): "What about Robertpaw, then Robertfang?"
Everyone else: "Yeah these three all sound like warrior names"
Firestar, from Star Clan, crying over Sandstorm's shoulder: "why didn't Star Clan try to stop them from doing that?"
Cloudstar and Birdflight, purring to each other: "Wait what who? I mean yeah new Sky Clan and all, but I'm pretty sure it's not us who are supposed to watch over them are we?"
Skywatcher: "Well Idk you named me Skywatcher so I kinda thought the name could be whatever unhinged shit you wanted."
Yellowfang: "Don't look at me I named my kit Brokenkit, I'm not gonna take take it out on other cats for what stupid name they give their warriors."
Bluestar: "OK we might need to re-organize whatever is going on in Starclan, Spottedleaf was kinda doing everything around here, omens for you, omens for your daughters, omens for Sky Clan, omens for your grandson Jayfeather, I mean we should have helped her but she was too busy to try and explain to Leafstar a proper naming system I suppose"
Meanwhile, a few seasons later:
"Hey what if we named our kit after his granddad who just died in a fight?"
"OK what would it be?"
"Sledgekit?"
"What does that mean?"
"No idea."
"Rad, let's do that"

I have the mc, some world building and a mentor type so far but they can and probably will be changed lol
I also don't have like... Any names, cause I suck at naming ngl. I named most of my cats after food. Like, candy in specific. Lmao.
Any tips on balancing magic types? It's inspired off of mha but I'm also gonna add other stuff!

Reading statistics around family names can be mind-blowing. Especially when you go look at East Asia and compare to Europe or North America.
Less than 300 family names in South Korea and 3 shared by nearly half the population. Also, one of the very few countries gaining new family names (because of immigration). China has a famous list of 100 names which cover over 80% of the population.
Meanwhile, France has somewhere between 800k and 1,200k family names, partly due to various spelling existing for identical pronunciations, and between 50 to 80% of the population has a rare family name (less than 50 people sharing it).
Of course, this is linked to history and how/when people got a legal family name in each country. But still.

Ranking and Naming System
(in order, from highest to lowest)
Firsts - leaders. Selected by the previous leader, and given a new suffix upon their selection, but they use their previous name until their leader dies. There are seven different leader suffixes (see end of post).
Seconds - the deputies, the seconds-in-command. They are selected by the leader once that leader is formally a First, and given their leader name in secret by the First.
Watchers - those who watch for signs from their gods. Like a warriors medicine cat, in how they are seen as very spiritual, and Watcher trainees have to be "accepted by the gods", or at least by the colony's god. Common Watcher suffixes are Sight, Whisper, Seeker, and Gaze.
Elders - the old cats of the colony. Usually 12+ years old. Respected for their experience and wisdom.
Hunters - the cats who hunt for the colony. Not much else to say.
Fighters - the cats who defend the colony, both from other colonies and other animals. At least one usually accompanies a hunting patrol, in case they run into something dangerous, and these cats are the ones who check the borders. Common Fighter suffixes are Strike, Fang(s), Claw(s), etc.
Healers - cats who use herbs, physical therapy, and any other natural remedies to heal their colony. They can wander freely, as well as gather herbs on other colonies' terrority, or ask them for herbs. (for instance, a Sandcat might ask a Junglecat for herbs that need a lot of moisture to grow.) Common Healer suffixes are to do with plants (Blossom, Mint, Sage, etc).
Nursery Queens - adult cats who cannot hunt, fight, or heal their colony, OR, pregnant queens who feel safer in camp than the rest of their territory.
Trainees - young-ish cats in training for a job. They don't have their job ranks. They're anywhere between three months to one year old, and only have the first half of their name, chosen by themself upon declaring their job (Bird, Maple, Wind, etc).
Kittens - lil baby kittens. Between from zero months to three months. They're confined to camp, and named after something about their appearance (Spots, Brown, Patch, etc).
Name Examples:
Oak Sky, Coyote Claws, Dusty Mint, Canyon Feather, Sorrel Storm.
Leader Suffixes (and their meanings):
Pool - a First who is peaceful, or who the previous First wishes to have a peaceful reign. Often given by Blaze or Storm leaders.
Heart - a compassionate or kind First, or one who puts their colony first an exceptional amount/even before they were a First or Second.
Ice - a First who is cold or ruthless, or who can do what needs to be done without emotions getting in the way. There's a bit of stigma about Ice leaders, because they tend to historically have contained some fucked up cats in their ranks.
Call - a First who has a spiritual aspect to their leadership, such as an Islandcat who almost drowned, or a First whos predecessor was given a sign by their god of who to pick for Second.
Blaze - a First who is a changemaker, who burns bright and quick. From the phrase "go out in a blaze of glory".
Storm - similar to Blaze, but not the same. A first who is a changemaker, who has a great impact on their colony or the colonies as a whole. From the phrase "to take the world by storm".
Song - a First who is good with words, or is charismatic. Often a good diplomat or mediator, and often improves the relationship with their own colony and the others.

kinda funny how Leafpool, a medicine cat, named her kits with normal names (old clan, bird, tree) while Squirrelflight, not a medicine cat, named three of her four kits after medicines (dandelion leaves, juniper berries and alder bark)

Idk if this was asked before but was there any reason you changed the name to Rosy instead of Princess? Story or just personal preference?
She was named Rosy because that's what her cat name is. Kittypets have two names: the name their human calls them and the name they call themselves. A cat is not going to know what an "Oliver" or "Hattie" is, nor would they be able to translate it properly into feline-speak, even if they know the sound that a human uses to call them home. They need a separate name entirely to talk with their fellows.
Cats generally name their kits or themselves based on their appearance - for example, Onion is named after a white plant, Rusty was named for his rust-colored fur, etc. Kittypets have a wide variety of options, since they're exposed to a lot more stuff and have names for those things, though they don't see a lot of nature-related things. The Clans follow the structure of appearance-prefixes, but they're pretty much relegated to colors, patterns and things they see in their territories.

[...] During the early stages of the war, the army gave sweeping approval for officers to adopt Lavender’s kill lists, with no requirement to thoroughly check why the machine made those choices or to examine the raw intelligence data on which they were based. One source stated that human personnel often served only as a “rubber stamp” for the machine’s decisions, adding that, normally, they would personally devote only about “20 seconds” to each target before authorizing a bombing — just to make sure the Lavender-marked target is male. This was despite knowing that the system makes what are regarded as “errors” in approximately 10 percent of cases, and is known to occasionally mark individuals who have merely a loose connection to militant groups, or no connection at all.
Moreover, the Israeli army systematically attacked the targeted individuals while they were in their homes — usually at night while their whole families were present — rather than during the course of military activity. According to the sources, this was because, from what they regarded as an intelligence standpoint, it was easier to locate the individuals in their private houses. Additional automated systems, including one called “Where’s Daddy?” also revealed here for the first time, were used specifically to track the targeted individuals and carry out bombings when they had entered their family’s residences.
In case you didn't catch that: the IOF made an automated system that intentionally marks entire families as targets for bombings, and then they called it "Where's Daddy."
Like what is there even to say anymore? It's so depraved you almost think you have to be misreading it...
“We were not interested in killing [Hamas] operatives only when they were in a military building or engaged in a military activity,” A., an intelligence officer, told +972 and Local Call. “On the contrary, the IDF bombed them in homes without hesitation, as a first option. It’s much easier to bomb a family’s home. The system is built to look for them in these situations.”
The Lavender machine joins another AI system, “The Gospel,” about which information was revealed in a previous investigation by +972 and Local Call in November 2023, as well as in the Israeli military’s own publications. A fundamental difference between the two systems is in the definition of the target: whereas The Gospel marks buildings and structures that the army claims militants operate from, Lavender marks people — and puts them on a kill list.
In addition, according to the sources, when it came to targeting alleged junior militants marked by Lavender, the army preferred to only use unguided missiles, commonly known as “dumb” bombs (in contrast to “smart” precision bombs), which can destroy entire buildings on top of their occupants and cause significant casualties. “You don’t want to waste expensive bombs on unimportant people — it’s very expensive for the country and there’s a shortage [of those bombs],” said C., one of the intelligence officers. Another source said that they had personally authorized the bombing of “hundreds” of private homes of alleged junior operatives marked by Lavender, with many of these attacks killing civilians and entire families as “collateral damage.”
In an unprecedented move, according to two of the sources, the army also decided during the first weeks of the war that, for every junior Hamas operative that Lavender marked, it was permissible to kill up to 15 or 20 civilians; in the past, the military did not authorize any “collateral damage” during assassinations of low-ranking militants. The sources added that, in the event that the target was a senior Hamas official with the rank of battalion or brigade commander, the army on several occasions authorized the killing of more than 100 civilians in the assassination of a single commander.
