Name of the Game Winners!!!

Congrats to our winners!!! Apparently I’m feeling abzany today. There were a lot of tokens, especially artifact tokens, among the submissions, probably cause they’re a good tool to use for the “gathering” flavor, and those are well represented within the winners (and the runners. Spoilers).

Gatherer’s Guile by @bread-into-toast

First of all, sweet art. You did a really impressive job there. I also love the card mechanically. I think a card that turns food into kinda-sorta-treasure is neat, and I think it makes sense that it enables itself. My only critique is that I don’t think I would have made the mill optional. Simply “mill a card and create a food token”. (Or cut the mill entirely, but I think it works fine either way and this is golgari afterall, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the mill was a useful addition). The card heavily incentivizes choosing to put the card in your graveyard already, since not only do you get a food but it even makes that food significantly more useful. This way, it’s presenting less of a false choice. But overall, this is still an extremely great card.

Okay I’ll be real, I literally oooohed when i saw this card. I love, love, love it. It tells a great little story- creatures keep dying, and once we have enough evidence we’re gonna get rid of the creature/planeswalker that we think did it. (How sus). The numbers on this look just right, and I’m glad you added the sorcery speed rider so that it doesn’t make combat math too complicated. I don’t think there’s really anything I would change here.

Kinsfolk Gathering by @socialpoison

This looks like a great card for a token archetype! Two creatures, one noncreature, cheap and efficient. Again, this card looks great. Honestly it could probably pretty easily be a common, though multicolor commons like this aren’t too…… common so I don’t think uncommon is a bad choice either. This looks great, seems like it would play well, and has some cute little flavor.  What’s not to like?

Listen, you should never film strangers in public without their consent, but I swear there need to be fines or something for people who do that shit in some spaces. For example: I had to go to the ER last night, and some jerk filmed a woman who just came in and was clearly having an asthma attack. She immediately got to go back, and he was unhappy about that. Believe me, I get that it sucks having to wait when you're in pain, but you don't get to pick who deserves care when. The medical system in the US is a nightmare, and the ER could be the worst moment of someone's life. No one deserves to be recorded because some jack ass believes someone doesn't look like they need care.

The Name of the Game

You know those times where you’re watching a movie or reading a book or whatever, and they say the title? Like in marvel where when they first found out about thanos and iron man looked at the camera and said “wow this truly is an avengers: infinity war”. We all remember such a classic moment of course.

Well I want you to make a card called “magic: the gathering”. Colon included.

Okay not really.

Make a card with the word “magic” or “gathering” in the card’s name

Credit to @minopug for coming up with this suggestion, in the Inventor’s Fair discord

Mandatory: Make sure the card name includes the word “magic” or gathering”. And I mean the word not an unrelated word that happens to share all the letters. Don’t make a card about a character named “magic” or something, ya know?

Encouraged: Try to use the actual word, but if you need to do a slight variation that’s okay. “Magical” or “Gather”. “Magician” is a step to far though. If you have any questions feel free** to ask.

Optional: You’re free to use both words if you like, but make sure it doesn’t sound awkward from trying to force a name that does have both, which leads me to my next

Warning: Make sure your card name sounds like an actual card name that might be printed. This is a common issue I’ve seen with these card-name based contests. Like in one we did a while back (back when I was a contestant) where you had to make a creature where the name was the same as the typeline, I saw a lot of people making a card that had an interesting typeline, like “faerie elk” or something (to use an example that I’m pretty sure no one actually did) but that doesn’t sound like a card that would actually get made. So sound out the name in your head, or even out loud, and decide whether it sounds like it could be a real card. Don’t choose a name for the sake of the contest, choose a name that happens to fit the contest. If someone were to look at this card and not know about the contest, they shouldn’t be able to tell it was made for it.
