Warning! Potential spoilers for Stranger Things 5!
To recap, Alex received this dm on 13/2/23, seemingly confirming mileven breakup
Tumblr media
She received this message on that day, which states that mileven are still together and happy. However it’s also instantly debunkable bc they’re absolutely not going to do the Hopper-Mike feud bs again. That is beyond clear.
Tumblr media
On this past Tuesday, 20/2/23, she received a second message outright stating Mileven breakup.
Tumblr media
Finally, on Wednesday, 21/2/23, she received this message full of pretty plausible statements, with mileven breakup included as fact. Interesting.
Tumblr media
This person claims it’s all fake, with no rationale or alt info - what, is Will not important now?
Tumblr media
Worth noting: Millie is currently doing promo for Damsels, so she’ll be out of commission re: filming for a few weeks. Early March is probably when she’ll come back, but Finn will be be busy with his Ghosbusters 2 promo.
Two conclusions:
1.) there will be no mileven scenes filmed for a few weeks. Filming schedules are very tightly planned to accommodate other actor commitments, so it doesn’t seem like this posed a massive issue. Hm.
2,) Millie will likely be doing any scenes she has with Sadie and Caleb, aka Max and Lucas, when she gets back. As this message says.
This person is probably just smart and well-informed enough to figure this out, but it’s interesting.
There has been some very intriguing activity on a stranger things set a few days ago - red UD ligthing, castle Byers.., and Will Byers. Will’s plotline for season 5 seriously looks like everything us Will stans have been dreaming of in terms of plot relevance, emotional catharsis, etc. This pic dropped yesterday, and the spoiler acc seems to have confirmed it’s Will:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly,this also dropped today:
(Credit to @1987byler on twt)
Very strange framework, here. If the goal is to set up Will being rejected gently by Mike, but understood and accepted, why not focus on that? Why not have Vecna say ‘you’re afraid he’ll be disgusted by you. You’re afraid he’ll see you as the disgusting, broken boy you are’ or something like that? Elsewhere in the game, it’s being reported by players that Will is being taunted about how his friends are all ignoring him, and how Max fits into the group better than he does. This is canonically a sore spot for him - not so much the Max part, but the general point. So why not emphasise his fear of Mike’s rejection, rather than his hurt at Mike picking El over him?
Maybe because, if this is carried into s5 and we get scenes of Vecna taunting Will about Mike choosing El, it’ll be certain that Mike will indeed pick Will. Maybe this is a means of hinting that?
(Side note: at this point in the time line, El was really just a concept to Will. The one time he met her, it was for barely a minute as a delirious, dying child. By s4, it’s very clear that they’re close and loving. I’ll hear no critique of him for apparently not wanting her to come back - it’s very obviously Vecna twisting things, as he did with Max in s4 to make it seem like she actively wanted to murder Billy.)
Also worth noting: the best Mike can say about the girl he supposedly loved at first sight, after a whole week with her, is that she’s ‘cool’, ‘different’, ‘awesome’. Very lacklustre. Compare to how Lucas would describe the comatose max to a newcomer in s4.
Finally: Will quite literally utilises a never-seen memory of Mike and him in Castle Byers as his happy menory, his safe place. You know, like the Snow Ball and those other memories of good times with Lucas that Max clung to in s4?
Credit to @will80sbyers
This post by @nebulousfishgills reports Vecna saying that Will is ‘the key’, manipulating Will’s memories, and directly saying “You’ll finally matter to someone, Will.” Byler kind of has to be endgame, right? For this to make any sense as a narrative? ‘We can still be friends’ won’t cut it, not if, as the messages Alex is getting make out, Will is still so achingly in love post-time jump that he’s staying by Mike’s hospital bed after everyone else leaves and kissing his forehead (a). Not if they’re still emphasising that Mike is his safe place, his home, his light, in (technically) pre-season five promotional material.
All of this is… interesting, to say the least.
I’ll leave off by sharing the posts made by the wonderful @solgmorell on the set leak (x) and the VR byler stuff (x, y).
(a)
ETA: two of the previous dms Alex has gotten state that Will struggles with his friendships with the other party member this season due to being closeted. This game touches heavily on Will’s feeling disconnected from his friends, at least partly bc of his sexuality…. One is above, the other is here:

okay guys here’s my crazy unsupported st5 theory that is mostly just me projecting my need for madwheeler bonding and drama and angst also byler duh
Tumblr media
disclaimers: i never make theories so this is extremely messy probably, i know jack dookie abt writing shows i think of this as my own little version of what i would think would be very cool to happen, if this has loop holes dont ask me anything bc idk either
OKAY LETS GET ON IT
so first things first here is what i am taking into consideration for the theory to happen:
• mike pov, self reflection and introspection (he is gay and in love with will byers okay)
• madwheeler bonding, theyre both complex n misunderstood
• the upside down isnt just one dimension, i came up with this bc of how different the ud looks now
Tumblr media
compared to when henry arrived.
Tumblr media
to me theres like an umbrella dimension (yellow one) and others under it (blue one/hawkins ud, the void, etc)
this is also lowkey supported by the silly boobie diagram the writers posted abt
Tumblr media
OKAY PREPARE FOR THE WORD VOMIT
in this silly theory of mine, a new dimension variant of the ud will be revealed in season 5, serving as a parallel to the void. this is where max is
OKAY another thing is this is also heavily based on those “leaks” that were going around twitter (for me at least) earlier when the strike first started. i remember a few of them claiming that we would get a deeper insight into mike and his own things, so this is my interpretation
this would serve as another vanishing, not really bc its shorter, but this time mike will be getting stuck in this other dimension, eventually finding max BOOM madwheeler serve
Tumblr media
i mean look at them. the potential is insane
ANYWAYS
this dimension is like a combo of all the other ones, picture it like the hawkins ud, with the void’s wet floor maybe
lets go back to the fact max is here, this is her coma nightmare, its like this purgatory dimension vecna put her soul in
in this dimension inhabit your ghosts
this overwhelming, haunting, tormenting realm in your mind where you are constantly confronting all your bad memories, maybe this is kind of how vecna keeps max under his grasp, no happy memories allowed
okay so, mike gets there. how? when? i dont fucking know this is honestly just word vomit fanfiction to me
at first hes confused, scared but mostly confused, picture him screaming for wills name (the parallels) at first it’s empty and eerily quiet, but as he accepts it, the ghosts start coming in.
he gets BOMBARDED with these bad memories, some of them he cant even remember because come on, bro is always neglecting his internalized feelings/monologue in fear of what they say about him
this is where we get his pov on the whole will and eleven situation, amongst other things (like the way he’s constantly stressed thinking about the safety of the people he loves)
for a moment we see him break, bc these ghosts are LOUD and MANY
but it stops
max is here, she’s like “MIKE?”
“MAX?”
shes been here for a fat minute, she knows how to handle these ghosts in fact shes been going thru them one by one ever since, because shes done hiding. and she suspects that the only way to get out is by confronting them.
max saves mike from his ghosts, explains that this place is seemingly a purgatory with levels of memories and ghosts to overcome
this is how we get our madwheeler bonding we so graciously need, as they are part of eachother ghosts since theyre so similar it makes the other mad
this is how our complex misunderstood characters are broken down, explained to the audience, while also discovering the mystery that is this new dimension where at the finish line they might just figure out how to defeat vecna.
because they will
after overcoming the ghosts they find the place that vecna didnt think they would reach as he was so sure they would break and collapse on their own madness
think of it as how el found the source in season 3
Tumblr media
or how max found vecnas lair after running away in dear billy
Tumblr media
except this place is vecnas actual mind, they can see hear and feel what vecna is thinking, his plans and everything
mike wonders how will feels being able to feel this all the time
will feels this all the time
will is always connected to this piece of vecnas mind, to this source
he can always hear vecna
until he suddenly hears max… and mike and theyre calling for help
Tumblr media
theyve figured out key clues on how to defeat vecna, and they have an idea on how to get out. this is how will’s connection comes in handy
mind walkie-talkie
maybe thats what this theory should be called, idk
-
so thats how we get our byler confirmation, madwheeler bonding like never before, mike focus, and the key to defeat vecna
at least in my head
i know this was messy and all over the place but it was very fun to explain and drop all my thoughts ive been vomiting on the gc for months now
let me know what you think, what you would add, if theres anything you think will support this theory?
its all just a theory, for fun! pls keep that in mind
thank you if you’ve read this far🫶

anonymous prompt: “this isn’t byler but do you think you could write some hopper trying to achieve some step-son stepfather bonding time with a reluctant Will?”
As it turns out, in some weird subversion of all of Jim Hopper’s expectations, teenage girls are a hundred times easier to figure out than teenage boys.
El had been a bit of a blank slate at first. She liked Eggo waffles and daytime TV and when Jim put his records on, she didn’t complain. Maybe she just didn’t know that there were other types of music out there, but as far he was concerned, there wasn’t much worth knowing about that wasn’t Jimi Hendrix anyway.
And then things started falling into place a little. El liked Eggo waffles, but she liked them most with the kinds of toppings on top that he wasn’t supposed to technically be eating anymore– whipped cream and candy and enough sugar to induce a heart attack twenty years early.
She liked the daytime TV just fine, but she liked it better when he watched it with her, telling her what all the unfamiliar words meant. Word of the day, he’d said as a joke, when she’d asked what infatuated meant. The irony of that wouldn’t hit him for another year or so.
She liked Jimi Hendrix okay, but he suspects that she actually just liked watching him dance around to the records more than she did any guitar riff, no matter how captivating they might have been. He doesn’t blame her. He’d never claimed to be a good dancer, but he sure could be an entertaining one.
So this is where he stands, currently. Teenage girls are fine. Teenage boys are, actually, a mystery beyond comprehension.
Or maybe it’s just Joyce Byers’ teenage boys that are hard to figure out.
Yeah. That’s probably it.
Jim’s sure he hasn’t been like this when he was younger. He’d been very straightforward about his interests: his dad’s vinyl collection of 50’s rock ‘n roll, the chocolate milkshakes at the local diner, and cutting class to smoke with Joyce Byers under the east wing stairs.
Some of these more so than others, maybe, but they’d been very simple interests all the same. Nicking Marlboros from his dad’s jacket pocket when he wasn’t looking, then slipping them into Joyce’s waiting fingers as she slid into the stairwell next to him. He’s pretty sure his dad knew where the cigarettes had been going, and he’s also pretty sure he didn’t care.
“What are you smiling about?”
Seventeen-year-old Joyce vanishes in a puff of stale smoke, and suddenly, she’s here in front of him again. The real thing this time, not a hazy, memory-worn apparition– faded cotton shirt, plaid flannel pajama pants. Smiling down at him, holding a pan of scrambled eggs in one hand and a spatula in the other.
Jim raises his eyebrows. “Nothing.” He shakes his head as she spoons eggs onto his plate. “I just– I haven’t seen you smoke in a while.”
Joyce huffs out a small laugh as she slides into the chair next to him. It’s early, barely seven in the morning. The kids don’t usually get up until well into the midmorning on summer days like this, so early mornings are for them and them alone. “I’m trying not to. El doesn’t like the smell.”
“Oh. She told you?”
“Will did.”
“Ah.” He takes a careful sip of his coffee. “What about Will? He doesn’t mind it?”
He can’t see Joyce’s mouth behind her mug, but her eyes are definitely smiling. “He doesn’t like it either. He just stopped saying so after a while.”
“Yeah, that sounds like him.”
Joyce laughs again, this time as she squirts a generous dollop of ketchup on her plate. “What, you didn’t kick the habit when you were locked up?”
“Oh, no,” Jim chuckles. “No way. I thought I would, for a while, but– it’s true, you know, what they say about cigarettes being worth as much as gold in there.”
“Really?”
They don’t talk about Russia much– at least not out here. Not in the morning, not after a good night’s sleep, not in the kitchen, where things are supposed to be happy and warm and filled with light. This isn’t the place for it– for things that are dark and cold and desolate, for monsters or funerals or death.
He clears his throat. “Hey,” he says instead, “listen, I was thinking.”
“Oh, yeah? About what?”
“I was thinking, maybe,” he starts, speaking more into the inside of his mug than to Joyce, now. “Maybe I’ll take Will out for the day. Do something together.”
If Joyce is surprised at all, it doesn’t show. “Yeah? To where?”
“I hadn’t thought that far ahead,” he admits, and she gives him an amused look. “I wanted to ask you first.”
Now she looks surprised. “What? Why?”
“I don’t know,” Jim shrugs, “he’s your kid! I didn’t want to cross any boundaries, or–” He trails off at the look on her face. “What?”
Joyce ducks her head, smiling softly. “No, that– that’s sweet, Hop. If he’s okay with it, then I’d love for you two to do something together.”
“Really? You think he would?”
“I–” Joyce starts, and then gets a contemplative look on her face. “You know he adores you, right?”
“Please,” Jim snorts, “he’s a sixteen year old boy. He doesn’t adore anybody.”
“Except–”
“We don’t talk about Wheeler before noon, Joyce,” Jim interrupts, and then Joyce is throwing her head back in another laugh. It’s a nice look, Jim thinks, maybe not as privately as he’d like. He’s sure she can tell exactly what’s on his mind.
“Okay! Sorry! But yes, of course. Go have a day out, just the two of you.”
“Okay,” he agrees, then takes a sip of coffee. “Okay. Sounds good.”
—-
The issue here is that given Joyce Byers’ infamous overprotectiveness, he’d thought acquiring her blessing to have a bit of adoptive father-adoptive son bonding would have been the hard part. And now he’s standing in front of Will’s room, hand raised to knock, feeling just about as jittery as he had when he had to give the Wheeler kid the shovel talk.
Both times.
Now or never, Jim, he thinks, because for all of his bravery fighting monsters and Russians and that time he broke his own ankle and ran through miles of snow on foot, this doesn’t compare. This is Will. This is Joyce’s kid. And he doesn’t know why that makes him so nervous, but it does.
You can do it. It’s just a teenage boy.
He sighs, and raises his fist.
“Yeah?” Will’s voice is faint from behind the door. “Come in.”
“Hey,” Jim says, and then steels himself, gathering every remaining bit of courage in his body to say, “you got a minute to talk?”
Will raises his eyebrows. “Sure,” he says. It’s wary, cautious. He sits up further, from where he’d been reclining back on his pillows. “What’s up?”
It doesn’t take a genius to see that he’s on edge. Jim supposes maybe this is a bit out of the blue, so he tries to relax, tries to make sure his body language reads I come in peace. “What are you reading?” he tries, nodding towards the book in Will’s hands.
“Um.” Will turns it over, looks at the cover like he has to remind himself. “It’s Slaughterhouse Five. Jonathan gave it to me,” he says slowly.
Jim lets out a low whistle. “Damn. That’s impressive, kid. Is it any good?”
Will shrugs. “It’s okay so far. I just started though.”
Jim doesn’t know enough about Slaughterhouse Five to keep this conversation going with any merit, so he figures maybe he should just cut to the chase. “Hey, listen,” he starts, and Will’s eyebrows creep a little farther up his forehead. “I was thinking of spending a day out. Go for a drive, grab some lunch. You want to tag along?”
“Oh,” Will says. “Um.” He holds up his book. “I was thinking of getting ahead on this, actually.”
Jim Hopper has braved Russian prisons, secret labs, an underground dimension, his own faked death, and being stood up by Joyce Byers. This is fine.
“Okay,” he says, “that’s fine. No worries.”
“Sorry,” Will adds for good measure, still half-upright on his bed and looking very much like he does not want to be having this conversation.
“Seriously,” Jim says, already backing out into the hallway. “It’s okay. Have fun with the book, kid.”
—-
“He hates me, Joyce.”
Joyce shoots him a look as she climbs into the passenger seat of the car. “He does not hate you, Hop. Maybe you just caught him off guard.”
Jim groans, putting the car in reverse. “I knocked before I went in!”
“Jim.”
“What?”
Joyce pulls the cigarette out of his mouth and drops it into the ashtray. “Please don’t smoke in the car,” she chides. And then, “Well, what did you say to him?”
“I asked him about his book, and then if he wanted to tag along with me while I–”
“Okay, I’d say that caught him off guard a little.”
“How?” Jim exclaims, and then Joyce laughs.
“I don’t know! Will’s just– he needs a second, okay, Hop? Don’t take it personally. I promise he does not hate you.”
“Okay,” he grumbles, as they turn the corner past the high school. “One more shot, and then I’m accepting the fact that both your kids hate me.”
“Jonathan doesn’t hate you either,” Joyce says, but she looks like she’s fighting back a smile. “He just– he doesn’t show affection like that.”
“They hate me,” he repeats, accelerating down the backroad. “They both hate me.”
—-
Attempt #2 goes better. Somewhat.
“Hey,” Jim says as he walks through the door the next evening. Will is curled up on the couch, sketchbook open on his lap. He looks up as the door opens, startling slightly, then relaxes.
“Oh. Hey, Hop.”
Hey, Hop, he thinks. That’s better than Hello, Chief.
“Is your mom home?”
Will shakes his head and looks back down. “She’s at the Wheelers’. She’s having, um. Wine night. With Mike’s mom.”
“Oh, okay.” Jim pauses. “Hey,” he starts, and Will looks back up. “Listen, I don’t suppose you want to watch a movie or something tonight?”
Will blinks. “A movie?”
You’ve come back from the dead, Jim, he thinks. This is just a sixteen year old boy. He shrugs. “Yeah, you know, everyone’s out for the evening. Thought we could make a night of it, just us two.”
“Um.”
“You can pick,” Jim offers, tossing his hat on the kitchen table. “I won’t judge your taste, I promise.”
Will’s lips twitch upwards at the corners, ever so slightly. “I have good taste,” he protests, and Jim shrugs, like sure! Okay! “But I can’t today. Um. Sorry.”
“Oh. Big plans tonight?”
“Actually,” Will starts, pursing his lips. “Mike and I are grabbing dinner soon.”
Oh. Oh. Okay. It’s a bit of a low blow, getting passed over for the Wheeler kid, but it’s fine. Jim can roll with the punches. “Huh. Anywhere good?”
Will shrugs, but he looks like he’s on the verge of a smile. “Just the diner on Main Street.”
“Oh, the diner,” Jim laughs, pulling out a chair. “I used to go there every day when I was your age, actually. Best milkshakes on this side of Indiana.”
“Yeah?” Will puts his pencil down. “What was your order?”
“Ham and cheese. And a chocolate milkshake,” he answers immediately. He dreamt about those milkshakes, thought about them during long, cold nights behind bars, nothing but prison-grade gruel to fill his stomach. Comfort food. The kind of memory you hold on to longer than you’d expect.
“I get ham and cheese too,” Will says, and then he looks a bit surprised at himself, like this was something he didn’t mean to say. “Except I get, um. I get strawberry instead.”
Jim pretends to think it over. “Strawberry’s good,” he admits, “but not good enough.”
“Hey!” Will says, laughing. “Come on. Chocolate is so boring.”
That feels like a win, even if it’s a small one. He’s smiling before he realizes it. Making light banter over milkshake flavors shouldn’t be this exciting, not for someone like him, not for someone who’s been through what he has, but–
“You need a ride?” Jim holds up his car keys, still clutched in one hand. “I can drop you off.”
The smile fades slightly from Will’s face. “Oh, um. Mike’s picking me up, actually. In, like, ten minutes?”
“Wheeler can drive?”
“He got his license last month,” Will says, picking at a loose thread on the blanket. Jim’s first instinct is to protest– something about that’s not safe, and I don’t know if that’s the best idea, but he bites his tongue.
If Mike Wheeler can kill monsters, he can drive a car just fine. Probably.
“Okay,” he says at last, standing up and grabbing his hat. “Have fun, kid. Tell Wheeler to drive safe. Five under the speed limit. It’s my buddies on patrol tonight, remember.”
Will looks like he simultaneously wants to laugh and groan. “Yeah. Yeah, thanks, Hop. I’ll tell him.”
“Have a milkshake for me,” Jim says, then slinks off to his room.
Okay. That could’ve gone worse.
—-
“Okay, I don’t think he hates me.”
Joyce gives him a look like see? “I told you he doesn’t hate you,” she says, reaching across him for the olive oil. “What did you say this time?”
“Something about watching a movie,” Jim says. “I was– God, okay, Joyce, can you take over the onions for me?”
Joyce laughs, and says, teasing, “Broke your way out of a prison but chopping onions is too much?”
“This is why I don’t cook,” he says, then makes his way over to the record player in the corner of the living room. “I’ll take over music duty.”
“Sure,” Joyce calls. “You don’t cook because of onions.”
Steely Dan crackles to life as he turns around. “Oh, yeah,” he grins, “this is it. This is the good stuff.”
“Jim,” Joyce laughs. “What– are you supposed to be dancing?”
Hey, he’s said it before. He’s not the best dancer, but he’s definitely an entertaining one. “Times are hard,” Jim croons along, and Joyce’s laughter grows. “You’re afraid to pay the fee–”
“You’re awful,” Joyce shakes her head, even as Jim grabs a hold of her hands. “And– Hop, my hands are all onion-y.”
He ignores her. “When you need a little bit of lovin’–”
“Ew,” comes a voice from the hallway, and Jim turns around.
“Hey, hon,” Joyce says absentmindedly, dropping his hands and wiping hers on the towel. Onion, she mouths at him. “What’s going on?”
Will shoots him a bit of a strange look. “Sorry. I was just wondering when dinner was going to be.”
“Twenty minutes?” Jim offers, then grins. “Thirty if your mom tries to put me back on onion duty.”
Will crinkles up his nose and turns in the direction of the living room. “What are you playing?”
“I don’t wanna do your dirty work,” Jim belts out in response. Joyce and Will stare, identical dumbfounded expressions on their faces. “Steely Dan?” Jim offers.
Nothing. Apparently he’s dating into a family with zero taste.
“Sorry,” Joyce shrugs. “It’s cute, though!”
Cute! He squints in Will’s direction. “You too?”
Will mirrors Joyce’s shrug. “Sorry. It’s not really my thing.”
“Oh? What’s your thing, then?”
Will stands up a bit straighter. “I don’t know,” he says. “Um. I like The Cure. Stuff like that.”
“The Cure,” Jim muses. “That band, you got the, uh. You’ve got records of theirs, right?”
“Yeah,” Will smiles, then moves forward to sit down at the table. “Jonathan gave me some of his older ones when he left for college so I started, uh. I started collecting them.”
Okay. Okay, he can work with this.
Over Will’s shoulder, Joyce shoots him an impressed look and a thumbs up. You got this, she mouths, and then, aloud: “Hey, I just remembered, guys, I’ve got to go deal with the laundry. Just a second.”
Will frowns. “The laundry isn’t going right now.”
“Okay, then I’ve got to run a load. Be right back,” Joyce says, and then she flashes him another thumbs up and she’s gone, off down the hall.
There’s a moment of silence. Will looks around the kitchen– at the pasta boiling on the stove, the dishes in the sink, the wooden grain of the table. “Okay,” he says after a moment, “I think I should–”
“Hey,” Jim blurts out, “why don’t you, uh. Why don’t you bring one of your records out? You can have a turn.”
Will stops, halfway out of his seat. When he speaks, it’s quiet, a little pleased. “Yeah?”
Jim nods, spreads his hands out. “Show me what you got.”
Will comes back a couple minutes later with a record in his hands. “Um,” he starts, “so this is their newest one, they released it a couple months ago.”
The red of the cover looks vaguely familiar. Jim’s sure he’s seen this one around in the record shops, something like that. “Very interesting,” he says, as Will drops the needle carefully onto it. “This is, uh–”
He knows the band, of course. He’s not that out of touch. But Will’s mouth twitches as he says, “The Cure,” and then, “um. This is one of my favorites so far.”
Jim doesn’t know what he was expecting, but it wasn’t the guitar. Drums, coming in steady and insistent. He lets out a low whistle. “Alright, wow. Didn’t take you for a rock fan, kid.”
To his surprise, Will smiles. A real smile. “Yeah,” he says, standing awkwardly by the record player. “Jonathan got me into them when I was younger. Um. I guess he liked stuff that had loud guitar and drums and stuff so, you know, I also– I like that stuff too.”
“Loud guitar,” Jim snorts. “Yeah, that sounds like your brother.”
“My dad– um,” Will says, hesitantly. “Lonnie. He hated loud music. The drums and the– I think that’s why Jonathan listened to it so much.”
Right, Jim thinks. Lonnie Byers, an infamously giant piece of work. That checks out. And then, another smaller voice pipes up with You’re the chief of police, Jim. You can get away with–
“Oh, kiss me, kiss me, kiss me,” the song croons, “your tongue’s like poison–“
Will’s eyes widen. “Um,” he says, fiddling with the player. “Um, actually, let’s– I like this other song too, so–”
Jim bites back a laugh. “I like it,” he says, which isn’t a lie. It could grow on him. “The guitar. It’s nice.”
“Really?”
“Yeah,” Jim nods, and then, as the second song starts to pick up– “Will.”
“Hm?”
“Is this a love song?” he grins. “Your second favorite is also a love song?”
“I– no,” Will splutters, immediately turning a brilliant scarlet. “‘Just Like Heaven’ is not a–”
“–I kissed her face and kissed her–”
“Lots of kissing in these songs,” he points out, and Will groans.
“Oh my God, it’s not–! The album is literally called Kiss me, Kiss me, Kiss me–”
Jim grins. Teenage boys are complicated, maybe, but you can count on them all getting flustered the same way. “I’m just teasing, kid. Could you go get your mom, please, because this sauce is about to burn and I don’t trust myself with it.”
“I wouldn’t trust her with it either,” Will mutters, even as he peers around the corner into the hall. “Mom?”
If Joyce hears him laughing, then– whatever. Jim gets a pass. It was for a good cause.

With the new atla series out I'm seeing a lot of zutara and kataang beef again annnnnnd aghhhh.
As someone who thinks both are fine, here are how I see both sides.
For kataang antis...I think you guys call them that? Idk, but for them, they say Aang is like a little kid and they mention the age gap all the time. But in the original show, Zuko and Katara have the same age gap so frankly that just doesn't work 😭 not to totally disregard that take though because I know fourteen year old me would not date a twelve year old, but I think some of y'all are pushing it. ESPECIALLY when y'all start mentioning the family dynamics like, "Aww a big sister and a little brother," liiike....now y'all are being annoying 😭😭
But some zutara antis are saying they feel that zutara is a self insert and....no, like I'm sorry but that's just a cop out 😭 like if you don't like the ship then just say that but this is a stupid reason for that, because it's just not true😭.
As someone who shipped byler when I was like eleven, I know how it feels to be called delusional 💀 but one thing I just won't stand behind is see y'all call zutara shippers delusional like everything for that ship wasn't there. Red and blue, zuko getting struck by lighting, the enemies to lovers. Everything was there! I think the downside of that is some zutara shippers are saying that that's proof for the ship which it obviously isn't.
But at the end of the day it's whoever Katara chooses, which in this case was Aang. I just don't see how this became a whole war....again, like? Be normal??
Edit:
I know I kinda said this up above with the Katara is a self insert, but I think I need to get more in depth because now I keep seeing it.
Because it is actually pissing me off when kataangs say, "people just ship zutara because they wanna live their fantasies out through Katara,".....ummm no?? 😭😭 Like maybe people ship zutara because Zuko and Katara are cute together?? Especially since kataang was supposedly an insert ship 😭😭?? The call is coming from inside the house💀 but even if that was the case wouldn't they just ship the cannon ship zumai...?
But it makes me mad because it totally disregards Katara as a character and just dumbing her down to a self insert, y/n type girl when nooo she is her own character.
One last thing is I was alwayyyys a sokka girl. I don't know why, I just liked the goofy blue type. Kinda like Voltron, everyone liked Keith but I was rocking with lance😭 the only time I like the red character over the blue was in TMNT 2012 version but anyways. What I'm saying is I never saw a zutara fan art and went,"sigh, I wish that was me🥺🥺" umm no💀

lark's recently-read byler fic recs
thought people could use some uplifting 💕🫶 please remember to hype up your favorite fics and art and other creative work & remember there's always something new to enjoy!! browse the tag or ao3 page & give someone's work a some love!! xoxo
If Time Runs Out by @rainypebble07 (T, ongoing, 14k+) - BYLER PIRATE AU!!! 🏴‍☠️ i literally just discovered this one today and i'm actually obsessed. i have never seen any other pirate aus (🤨) n i just wanna say u guys are missing out on the concept and on this fic bc i'm so invested. i'm so excited to see where this fic goes. royal mike x pirate mike is SO GOOD.
how to get your crush to believe you love him: a guide by mike wheeler by @newlesbianprideflag (T, 3/4, 11k+) - mike goes across the country to visit will at college in an attempt to confess his feelings to him. will, who has a boyfriend already and would like to think himself very over mike, thank you, is not impressed. this one deconstructs a lot of popular/fanon tropes and is really great so far!!
california show your teeth by @fireflywitch (T, 8/19, 63k+) - ok this one mayyybe only has background byler but i'm reccing it anyway bc it's one of my FAVORITE regularly updating fics maybe EVER. in early 1985, chief hopper and his average, normal family move from lenora hills, california to hawkins, indiana--the latter of which has had multiple tragedies over the past few years, to which the new chief's family may or may not be linked. LIKE WHATTTT 👀 go read it RN. masterpiece
All Good Dogs by @hellfiremike (T, 1/1, 3.8k) - this one actually made me cry. featuring: an EXCELLENT character study of will byers, a heartfelt examination of canon and what comes after, and chester the dog getting the attention he deserves and never got in canon 😭
kiss me (try to fix it) by birthofv3nus (T, 1/1, 4k) - will has kissed every member of the party except for mike, who is, understandably, taking this news *SO* well and is not jealous about it at *ALL.* but maybe his situation is not quite as dire as he believes it to be....ugh this one was such a fun read, and you know i loveee party dynamics!!
drank my poison all alone by silverluminoqity (T, 1/1, 4k) - mike is going through it, and, though vecna seems to have been vanquished, maybe he's not so completely gone as everyone thinks.... this is an excellent exploration of both mike's guilt as well as his evolution as a character, and how he views himself. super in-character and super good!!
high tide came and brought you in (and i could go on and on) by silverluminoqity (T, 1/1, 8k) - MOTEL FIC MOTEL FIC MOTEL FIC 🥳 or, mike and will have yet another heart to heart, and some things are revealed. this fic is just so completely heartfelt and UGH i was MELTING the ENTIRE TIME, holy SHIT. probably in my top 3 motel fics EVER tbh.
Chasing Heartlines by @cherryisgone (T, 1/2, 6k+) - i was so excited to read the first chapter of the sequel to maybe one of the best byler fantasy aus ever!! knight mike pining after prince will is something that can actually be so personal to me. i love a good mike-won't-shut-up-about-will fic. the attention to detail in this fic is actually INSANE.

kids show up, and i get no kisses.
Tumblr media
billy hargrove x gn!reader
word count: 1,254
warnings: swearing, suggestive comments, fluffy fluff
a/n: hi!! some billy for you. this is my way of romanticizing a holiday i’m not totally over the moon for, but this is how i wish it’d be. if you don’t celebrate it, you can skip this, or imagine eating a whole bunch of stuff you like, or ignore me as a whole. this is also me encouraging byler. i hope you enjoy it!! <33
————
Billy's palm was warm where it rested on your bare thigh, callouses scratching back and forth from time to time. He'd made himself at home, his legs over yours, sticking where skin met skin. He had on those little green shorts despite the fact that it was freezing outside.
It was one of those days where neither of you had to work, and it was too cold for him to go outside. A day where he insisted on being on top of you the whole time, insisted on being all over you. Not that it bothered you. You did live together after all.
Billy was staring at the television, some rerun of something on. You thought he was paying attention, but his words told you he'd really been off thinking away.
"Are we supposed to, like, do Thanksgiving or somethin'?"
This would be your first major holiday living together, and honestly, you'd thought about it, but you weren't really sure. You certainly didn't want to go home, and that wasn't going to happen for Billy either.
You turned to look at him, light from the tv creating shadows on the slopes and plains of his face. He looked so pretty. "Do you wanna? Like eat together maybe?"
"Hm. Maybe?" Billy rubbed his nose. You reached over him to pull the chain on the lamp, room darkening from the now fully set sun. He set a hand on your back to steady you, but when you moved back he pulled you fully in his lap, setting your forearms on his shoulders.
"Did you celebrate it at home?" You questioned tentatively, swiping a thumb over his freckles and giggling lightly because of how much you liked them. He wouldn't even scold you for your fawning anymore.
"Mom cooked when I was a kid, but clearly that went to shit. Susan fucked something up on accident once and then Neil just made us go out to eat after that, or eat leftovers. I think we might've gone to like a grandparents or something when I was really young? I don't know."
"Why don't we figure something out, yeah? Pick stuff out. Maybe we could have Max over?"
Billy contemplated, dramatically taking your face in his hands. "Okay," he drawled.
————
That's how you found yourself in the grocery store, list in hand as you searched through the potatoes for some that looked promising. You found some just as Billy returned with the peas he'd wanted.
Moving to another section, you looked through the pie crusts before glancing up to ask Billy for help. You caught him in the act of racing down the aisle, body hoisted up on the cart, leg pushing him off of the tile until he reached the end cap and spun around. Clearly he was bored.
He caught your gaze, tossing his head back and laughing because you'd seen him. But you didn't mind when he got like this. Any chance for him to release some of that childhood energy was good. Deserved.
"Need somethin' baby?" He put his hands on his hips, out of breath.
"You want pumpkin or apple pie?"
"Pumpkin."
"Good. Wasn't gonna make apple anyhow."
He grinned at you, fixing the collar on his jacket, brown leather worn in from years of wear. "What else do we need? I can get whatever you want."
He peered over your shoulder at the list, reading the things you hadn't marked off yet. "Milk, eggs, gravy. Come on sweet thing." Billy placed one hand on the cart, reaching the other out to take yours and place it on his belt so you could grab hold. "I'm on it."
————
Billy was finishing deviled eggs when there was a knock at the door followed by, "I'm coming in! Please be decent!"
You laughed over the stove where you were finishing mashed potatoes. Max entered the kitchen along with Lucas and Will.
Billy wiped his hands off. "Hi boys. Hi shitbird." You turned in time to catch their hug—short, but kind, and followed by a yank of Max's pigtail.
Will made his way over to you. "Smells good." He hugged you sweetly and then snuck a roll. Lucas followed, and then Max.
"Are we having macaroni?" She asked, hopeful.
"Your brother made it." You looked over at the timer on the counter. "It's almost done." She laughed in triumph before offering her help, which you declined, telling the three of them to do whatever.
Billy cut up the turkey into thin slices, so that it was "fall-y apart-y" the way you liked, and then the five of you sat on the floor around the coffee table in the living room to eat, the Macy's parade on in the background.
Will sat to the left of you, Billy on your right. You took this as your gateway to breach the question, knowing he recognized your home as a safe space, even though everyone knew now. You turned to him and he looked up, watery doe eyes meeting yours. But apparently, Billy was wondering the same thing as you.
"How's Mike?" He asked, looking around you, beating you to the question.
Will blushed, but smiled nonetheless. "He's good. He's really good. Finished a campaign the other night."
"Yeah? That's good."
You all drifted into varying conversations throughout your meal, Billy and Lucas talking about basketball, while you, Max, and Will critiqued the varying dance groups in the parade or talked about what they were doing on fall break.
Eventually, Billy helped you clean up while the kids set up Monopoly on the table in place of the food.
Standing in front of the fridge, rearranging the Tupperware, Billy wrapped his arms around you, snuck his warm hands under your shirt to rub at the chub of your tummy. His nails grazed your sides, making you laugh.
You shut the fridge, turning around to face him. "Something you need, Mr. Hargrove?"
His smile reached his eyes, and you reached out for his freckles again. He leaned into your touch. "Just you. And I want pie."
"'Course you do. Anything else?"
"Kisses. Kids show up, and I get no kisses, even in my own damn house. Pretty please?" He batted his lashes at you. "I've been so good today."
"Today."
He scoffed. "Rude."
You took his face in your hands and kissed him anyhow, slow and sweet, eliciting a groan from him. You pulled away, but he muttered an "Uh, uh," instead.
This time he ran his tongue along your bottom lip, before slipping it into your mouth. You pulled away this time, making him pout. "B, in case you forgot, there are minors on the premises."
He kissed your forehead. "Yeah, yeah."
Speaking of, said minors joined the two of you in the kitchen and you doled out pie to each of them. Leaving you and Billy alone again, you watched as he spooned out cool whip on either of your slices. He rubbed your nose, ridding his index finger of the creamy substance he'd gotten on it.
He used it as an excuse to lick it off, swiping his tongue over your nose. "Billy!" You giggled—exactly the reaction he'd been hoping for.
The five of you spent the rest of the afternoon talking about everything and nothing, whining over board games, and eating yourselves so full that there was no other choice but for all of you to nap in various locations, splayed out over whatever surface was around.
You couldn't have asked for anything better.

How I see Prince and Paladin byler is kind of dark ngl-
let me share my idea.
This takes place in 1700s in my idea just so you know!
Mike is a poor orphan who is 17-18 and needs to find a job so he tried to get one at the castle to be a person paladin to the Prince. Prince is a sassy, snotty teen, most of his personal paladins have quit because of his snottiness. The Queen decides to hire someone more of his age to maybe help. (The Queen is not Joyce just so you know, and Will doesn’t have any siblings in my version of the au as well.) Prince Will just has him and the Queen until Sir Micael the Paladin shows up. He becomes a live-in-paladin.
The Prince isn’t all that nice to the paladin at first, but the paladin needs his job so he decides to suck it up. Until one day he finally decides to talk to the Prince since he’s going to have to stay w/ him until he can be “trusted”. The Prince agrees to this. They start hanging out in the grand garden of the palace. Mike would put frogs on Will’s shoulder and tame it to stay there (he was kind of a frog whisperer). Mike loved all animals, he would tell Will that it was his duty to love anything and everything. Mike would spend some of his time after dinner in the library in the castle as a way to get tired. Mike and Will spend days together talking in the garden and around the house. Until one day Mike decides maybe they should go out to his village and where he learned to be a paladin.
Mike takes Will to the village they have a ball. They even sword fight each other (in a playful all-fun-n-games way.). Mike and Will get back and the Queen isn’t home. Mike asks Will about his knack for painting and goes up to the art room to look at it. Later on after looking Mike gives into his urge of kissing the Prince.
Mike panics after word, but Will calms him down by kissing him back. They end up laying in bed together after a make out. Mike then feels a rush of pain/guilt.
“What if they catch us?”
“They won’t.”
“But, what if they 𝘥𝘰”
Will thinks Mike is silly for thinking that some servants would budge in on their business and watch them, but Mike wasn’t lying. He was terrified. He didn’t want Will to die.
“I would take the blame for you.”
“No, Mike, we are in this together.”
“Be honest Will! If they do find out, who will end up getting burnt?”
“I…”
“If a Queen ant and a regular worker ant do something wrong together, which ant will pay the sacrifices Will?”
“Maybe this was a mistake then…”
Mike leaves Wills room at the verge of tears. Choking up so much, he just hopes Will doesn’t see him.
“Yeah, maybe your right.”
The queen returns and Will and Mike have to go down to have dinner w/ her. They have to act as if nothing happened. They didn’t want to be… “disgusting”. After dinner like goes into his room and sobs. He couldn’t take the pain, he 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 Prince Will, but he couldn’t 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 Prince Will.
A day later the queen calls Mike down to talk to him. Mike had a feeling he knew what was going to happen. The Prince was clueless to this all, but its not like the Prince wasn’t in pain. He didn’t want to marry a girl…
“You disgusting swine! How dare you poison my son into that with your- with your 𝘞𝘐𝘛𝘊𝘏 𝘊𝘙𝘈𝘍𝘛! You are being sentenced to be hung, tonight.”
Mike expected this 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴𝘯'𝘵 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘭. Will found out about the hanging and was asked to come, of course he didn’t go he 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 Mike so much. He sobbed when he found out, he sobbed and sobbed and sobbed. Sir Michael the Paladin was dead the next day Will woke up. Will could never move on- he hears a knock at his door.
“Prince I was cleaning out Sir Michael’s room, I think this is for you, Your Highness.”
Will opens it and reads it
“Dear, Will, I don’t want you to cry about my death. I need you to move on, but moving on doesn’t mean forgetting about thou. Remember everything, the library, the art room, the village, the pond, the frogs, the talks, and especially 𝘮𝘦. Please, for the sake of your legacy and family marry a Princess and have a good life, William. No matter where I am, I will always be looking out for you and protecting you, my dearest William. I don’t regret anything, I would do it all over again if I could. I love you. - Love, Michael the Paladin.”
———
I LOVE THSI AU AND HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT IT SO MUCH I HOPE YOU LIKE MY IDEA OF IT :D

I’m a firm believer that El will be the one who breaks up w mike in s5
Tumblr media
ISTG DUDE I ALWAYS SEE MILEVENS SAY “mike isn’t gonna break up with el just for Will” OR “el isn’t gonna sacrifice herself for a mlm relationship” which is just dumb
Like duh ofc they’re not doing that. Like firstly, if either of them break up it’s not going to be because of Will i think (at least not for mike, cause I feel like for him it would have some relation but it wouldn’t be his sole reason) but mike wouldn’t break up with El just for Will, el would break up with mike just so the two of them got together. Also that’d just be BAD story telling
*also tiny lil note: when I say “it’d” I mean “it would” idk some ppl don’t get it when I text like that, also I’m not sure if it’s a real grammar thing soo ye, it’s just easier than saying the whole thing. So just letting ya know. Also another thing: this post was made cuz of right here*
If El broke up with Mike:
El would break up with mike because she realizes that they’re relationship is somewhat toxic and one-sided. She’d do it for herself CUZ MISS GIRL WILL BE INDEPENDENT 😆 but seriously, she would have this self growth yk? Like she’d have a montage of finding herself(like in season 3 kinda) finding her interests, hobbies, etc. she’d learn that she isn’t a monster or just a super hero. She’d learn that she’s just Eleven. And that’d be so good for her. She would learn that she doesn’t need a boyfriend to be deemed “normal” or something. She’d learn that she’s not a freak. She’d learn that she’s more than her powers. She’d be quite literally an independent woman™, not needing a man. (Honestly she never needed one before either🤷🏽‍♀️) that’s her arc for s5 (as well as the defeat of vecna duh💀). While all that’s happening, Mike n Will are gonna have their relationship act. Yk the whole sh-bang. their internal conflict within themselves(Will’s self hate, Mike’s self discovery), the social conflict with society/friends/family(homophobia, approval or denial), the conflict they have with each other(mike n will’s friendship, their romantic love for each other, their miscommunication) that’s Mike’s(and Will’s) arcs for s5. (As well as whatever happens outside of their relationship duh).
If Mike broke up with El:
Mike would break with el because he’d realize “woah I don’t love her like she needs me to” (I do believe he loves her, but not in a romantic sense tho). It’d go like this: him realizing he doesn’t have those feelings for her, or for any woman, then he’d learn to accept that and then he’d break up w her. He’d keep learning abt himself and his sexuality. I do think eventually he would acknowledge his feelings for Will and then the whole sh-bang will start 😝 I mean honestly it’s not much different from if El broke up with him. Maybe the perspectives would change or something, idk I’m not the duffers 🤷🏽‍♀️😭 but el maybe would still have epiphany of “I’m actually a human person”
ACTUALLY WE WOULD BE SHOWN THE STUFF HAPPENING BACKWARDS. Like if El broke up with him, we’d see her character development first then his. But if Mike broke up first, we’d see his character development first. If mike broke up first it’d be: break up, then Mike’s first phase of his character development, then El’s first phase, then Mike’s, then El’s, etc.
Or if El broke up first it’d be: break up, then El’s first phase of her character development, then mike’s first phase, then El’s, then Mike’s, etc.
Ofc it’s not gonna be like that all the time, I mean u gotta have cuts in between it happening. Like in s4 the Cali gang were having their story development while El’s was going on so kinda like that I think. Kinda like it’s always been in this show🤷🏽‍♀️ atp I’m just yapping BUT YEA I think I’m going in circles and not making sense at all but in my defense is 1:27 am and I couldn’t stop thinking abt Byler and El soooooo ye
Conclusion: I hope El breaks up with him first cuz girl power and I just love her
A LOT
and this post is kinda pointless ngl😭 but it’s late and I’m tired so it’s fine

What a beautiful girl 😭❤️

perhaps season five apocalypse vibes for the prompts?
(btw i love your writing so so SO much like you are such an inspiration to me anyway bye <3)
AWWW okay first that's so sweet tysm <333 sending you a big ole hug
and second, i LOVE my s5 apocalypse vibes, so here you go. have some byler in a (new and improved) castle byers together.
built to fall apart (then fall back together)
If Will had a nickel for every time he has been forced to hide inside a little fort made of branches and twigs from a deadly monster hunting him down and wanting to eat him alive… he’d have two nickels.
And look. Okay. Two nickels? Not a lot of money. You really can’t buy anything with two nickels, not like you probably could when his mom and Hopper were his age or maybe even younger.
But two times hiding inside a Castle Byers from a demogorgon?
That’s two times too many.
This isn’t fair by any means, but then again, nothing about Will’s life has been fair since November 6, 1983. Ever since that first encounter with the demogorgon, it’s been one bad thing after another, and well… ending up back here feels annoying but also not surprising in the least.
At least this time, Will isn’t alone, and this time, he’s not technically in the Upside Down—though nowadays, all of Hawkins might as well be the Upside Down. It… it’s gotten bad these past two years. As One has been recovering, the Upside Down has been growing, reaching further and further into Hawkins, and transforming Will’s hometown into something ripped right out of an apocalyptic movie.
Everything is coming to blows, and Will can feel it. He can feel him, ready to soon return and put and end to all their planning and preparing. One is just waiting now and biding his time—simply looking for the perfect opportunity to strike, to come back, and to put an end to humanity once and for all.
It’s only a matter of time now.
Hell, for all Will knows, this could be the beginning of the end, and wouldn’t that be funny in the world’s least funny way? To end right where he began—running and hiding for his life from the same type of monster that kidnapped him all those years ago. Because right now, there’s a demogorgon sniffing around the abandoned forests right outside Will’s old childhood home, desperately seeking out its meal, and hoping to finish what it’s already started, and right now, Will is seventeen but feels twelve years old again—terrified for his life and wondering if this might be how he dies.
Will takes a shuddered breath, his eyes wandering down to the blood gash on his ankle. The strips of cloth that Mike had desperately tied around the wound are already soaked, dark maroon tainting the soft green fabric of Mike’s bandana. Bile rises in the back of his throat, but he forces it down.
Sooner or later, the demogorgon is going to find him. It always does, doesn’t it? Castle Byers – it’s not such a good place to hide. The demogorgon found him there, in the Upside Down, anyways, and the first Castle Byers had been torn down by Will’s own hands in one final act of self-loathing, right before the Mind Flayer had returned.
This hiding spot’s probably the worst place they could be right now.
And yet, despite the fact that they could be moments away from death, Will can’t help but look around at their silly little hiding spot.
It’s bigger than the original Castle Byers was, which is definitely a good thing in this instance. Will’s not so sure that the both of them would’ve been able to cram inside the original Castle Byers—not with Mike Wheeler’s gangly limbs and with the rifles and other supplies they’d both brought on patrol. But still, though this new fort is larger than the original one was, it’s not that much bigger, so both Will and Mike are pressed against each other, close enough that Will can hear his best friend’s unsteady breathing and feel the way he’s trembling.
Will’s hand twitches, brushing up against Mike’s hand, and in the silence, it’s easy to hear the way Mike’s breath catches. Neither one of them says anything, and Will’s never been more glad for the darkness and how it conceals how red his face must be right now.
The darkness, however, also makes it a little bit harder to take in the rest of this new Castle Byers. All Will knows is that there are little pictures and drawings and posters taped to the walls of the fort, just like in the old Castle Byers. On the little table beside Will, there are a few books and other trinkets, but that’s not what catches Will’s eye.
No – what catches his eye is a picture, a little difficult to see from far away, but luckily close enough that Will can reach out and grab it. Sure enough, it’s exactly what he thinks it is: the old pictures of the Party that he had ripped in half, right down the middle before the destruction of the original Castle Byers. The picture is a little faded and there’s a piece of tape holding it together, but it’s here.
It’s here, and Castle Byers is here too, and Mike is here, his hand clenched tightly around Will’s own.
“Come on!” Mike had yelled, his arm wrapped around Will as the two of them limped through the forest. “I know a place we can hide!”
He knew this place was here.
Mike knew that this new Castle Byers was here.
Which means…
Will looks around again, taking in as much as he can of the rebuilt fort. His heart pounds inside his chest, and outside, a monster lurks, waiting for the right moment to strike and to kill them both.
Inside? Inside, Will is reeling—overwhelmed with a dozen different emotions and thoughts swirling around inside his head. Mike… Mike rebuilt Castle Byers for him. At some point or another, after their fight, after Will destroyed his childhood fort, Mike must have come back to the forest and rebuilt this place to be nearly identical to the one Will grew up with.
Why? Will thinks, and he dares to look over at his best friend. There’s worry written all over Mike’s face, but when he catches Will looking at him, his expression softens. Why would he rebuild this place?
Mike’s gaze flickers to the walls of their shared hiding spot; then, he scoots in closer, so there’s no space left between the two of them. “You probably have a lot of questions,” he whispers, just barely loud enough for Will to hear.
And honestly, Will can’t help but laugh, both because that is the understatement of the year and because this is the worst possible time to find out about this. If they slip up even just a little, then they’ll end up dead—demogorgon dinner in the middle of the forest, miles away from their family and friends.
“Yeah,” Will breathes, and he glances over again, meeting Mike’s eyes. “Probably… probably not a good time to ask them though.”
Something like a laugh escapes Mike’s lips. “Probably not,” he echoes back and scoots closer. Neither one of them says anything else, and so silence settles over the two of them once again like an old, unwelcome enemy. The only thing that Will can hear is the nervous thumpthumpthump of his own heartbeat, joining in with Mike’s careful breaths taken every few seconds. In and out. In and out. In and out. In and—
“Will?”
Will flinches and turns back around, so he and Mike can meet eyes once again. It’s a little difficult to see in the darkness, but there’s hesitancy written all over Mike’s face. He looks like he wants to say something—something that’s urgent and something that he’s been waiting forever to say and something that Will simply can’t figure out just by studying his best friend’s face. But whatever it is… it’s important to Mike to say this.
Important enough that he’d risk being heard and found by the demogorgon to say it.
“Yeah?” Will whispers back. He scoots closer too, and maybe it’s the blood loss or the fear or the adrenaline talking, but Will thinks he sees Mike’s eyes wide and hears his breath catches and notices the way Mike’s gaze flickers downward for one, two, three moments too long.
Oh, Will thinks, somewhere distantly in the back of his mind. Maybe that’s the answer to his question.
Why would Mike rebuild this place?
It feels a little bit ironic, but Will thinks that maybe, just maybe, the answer might just be the same reason he tore down Castle Byers in the first place.
(Because I love you.
Even though I shouldn’t.
Even though it’s supposed to be wrong.
I’m in love with you.)
Mike swallows the lump in his throat. His gaze has returned to Will’s eyes now, instead of his lips—his lips—and he reaches up with a trembling hand to cup Will’s cheek. This time, Will’s breath catches, and he watches with wide eyes as Mike thumbs away some of the dirt on Will’s cheek, taking special care to be as gentle as possible.
“I…” Mike starts to say, but he stops again, lips pressed together nervously. He looks away again, this time glancing out at the world beyond the shared hiding spot. It takes another moment for him to look back at Will, but when he does, he seems a lot more at ease, that familiar determination returning to his face. “We might not make it out of here.”
Will winces. Truthfully, a small part of him had almost forgotten about that, but yeah… that’s the unfortunate reality of the situation they’re in. There’s a monster outside of Castle Byers, and it wants to kill both of them. Will’s ankle is currently bleeding through, and any moment now, the demogorgon might catch onto his scent and come have both of them for dinner.
Romantic. So romantic.
“Right.” Will nods slowly and swallows the lump in his own throat, looking down at their intertwined hands. It feels like some sick joke from the universe that this would happen—that the two of them would finally find the courage to confront everything that has been going on between them, to finally acknowledge the path they’ve been stumbling down together for quite some time now—only when they’re about to die.
Leave it to the universe to give him a shred of happiness and a taste of a happy ending, only to rip it away.
Mike takes another breath, and he squeezes Will’s hand tighter than he ever has before. “I-I guess,” he whispers nervously, “I… I just wanted to say—”
“Don’t,” Will blurts out.
Mike freezes. In the darkness, his eyes go wide, and he stares back at Will in complete shock. “W-what?”
Will takes a deep breath, glancing at the entrance to Castle Byers, then back at Mike again. “Don’t,” he repeats, softer this time. “Whatever you’re going to say… don’t say it… not if you’re only saying it because we’re about to die.”
He pauses here, swallowing the lump in his throat and looking away, unable to meet Mike’s eyes. “If you really mean it,” Will says quietly, “then… just wait. Wait until we’re out of here or… or at least until we know we’re safe. Okay?”
For a while, Mike is quiet, and he grows tense beside Will, like he’s not sure how to take this request. The silence is dreadful, and it makes Will almost regret stopping him from saying this.
But… if Mike is really going to say what Will thinks he’s going to say, then he can wait. He can wait until the two of them are safe, until they don’t have to hide from a monster trying to kill them, until they both can actually focus on what’s been said to each other, instead of fearing for their goddamn lives. They’ve waited this long. They can wait a little bit longer.
“Okay,” comes Mike’s response, a whisper barely audible in the silence. He shifts closer again to Will and moves, wrapping an arm around Will’s shoulder and pulling him close. “But… but I do mean it, Will. I swear I do.”
Thumpthumpthump goes Will’s nervous heart, and despite the circumstances the two of them are in, Will can’t help but smile. “Good,” he whispers back and looks up at his best friend, meeting his gaze in the darkness. “Then… I’m excited to hear what you have to say. You know… if we don’t die.”
A quiet huff of a laugh escapes Mike’s lips, and he rests his head on Will’s shoulder, hugging him close. “We better not die,” he mumbles. “That would really, really suck.”
“Yeah,” Will whispers back with a laugh of his own. “It really, really would.”
Neither one of them says anything else after this. True to his word, Mike doesn’t say what he had tried to say, but at the same time, he does. The two of them… they’ve never been big on words, anyways. Actions have always spoken louder. So, in the darkness of Castle Byers—that was rebuilt by Mike for Will—the words I love you are never spoken aloud, but they’re said to one another anyways.
Mike holds him closer,  and he gently runs his hand up and down Will’s arm, keeping him calm and reminding him that he isn’t alone. I love you, Mike says, when he lets Will lie against his chest, and when he wraps an old blanket around the two of them. I love you, I love you, I love you.
I love you too, Will thinks to himself, arms wrapped around Mike’s waist. He listens to the quiet sound of Mike’s heartbeat and forces himself to breathe. They’re going to make it out of here.
They have to.

🏹 ˖ ࣪⊹ — never a winner
pairing: mike wheeler x fem!reader
summary: inspired by something i saw on tiktok // knowing mike all these years you would’ve thought he would finally realize and chose you, but not when someone else enters the picture
warnings: this could also work for byler but it’s reader
age of pairing: 14-15
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i was fine,
being friends with mike wheeler was all fine and fun until one night he had you sitting on the ground against your bedroom door rethinking your entire friendship with him. all those conversations, small flirty moments, times he would hang back just to talk to you. could it be? no no you were being delusional. but then why would he say he has a crush on a girl to you. he asked you about girl advice, something the mike wheeler had never done in all the six years you’ve known him.
he was saying if he should call her or go up to her, and after a long conversation full of do’s and dont’s, you finally convinced him to bring her tomorrow to the dnd meeting. you honestly thought he was going to bring no one and then say it was you. because you hadn’t seen mike talk to girls and he can’t even talk to girls.
he tried asking for an eraser to carly pent and stuttered so bad, the teacher gave one to him instead to save him from embarrassment. that was what—? like a week ago!
so you dressed your best with a smile on your face and biked over to the wheeler’s house for the meeting. you saw a few bikes, red and blue and the other colors that the party had. then your eyes fell upon a shiny silver one with the engravings ‘el,’ one you had never seen in your life. maybe mike or will got a new one? or maybe it’s lucas? he was asking for a new one for months now. but what the hell does ‘el’ mean?
so you shrugged off the weird feeling and entered the house. you greeted mrs. and mr. wheeler as always and handed them a box of cookies your mom instructed you to give them. then you ran down the stairs with such excitement to tell mike how you felt and not feel awkward anymore. you were tired of waiting and you knew—you just knew that you were the girl he was talking about.
but the second you jumped from the second to last basement step due to a habit you developed, you saw a sight from your nightmares. another girl. she had brown messy hair with a plain shirt and flannel. she held a blank stare and you returned it out of confusion.
when you came.
your mind went poof—! and all your pent up excitement went out the fucking window. “y/n!” you group collectively greeted and you may have muttered a hi or two but your eyes were fixed on this girl. you prayed mike would say she was his cousin but no. the universe hated you. “so now that everyone’s here, i’d like you to meet our new addition to the party, el.” mike seemed happy about this, like he arranged it.
the tone in his voice indicated that he wasn’t trying to be funny or pulling a prank. he actually just invited this girl to join the party. the party that you helped create and max joined, but you didn’t mind. she was funny and entertaining that she was easy to like but by the look on the other girl’s face you weren’t going to like her as much.
and we fought
the next weeks were the most horrible weeks of your life. you never felt so useless, like you didn’t matter. and you especially didn’t know one girl could do all this. she didn’t even do it on purpose, it wasn’t like she was out for you. but she liked mike. she would cling next to him everywhere, whether it was school, meetings, lunch, hangouts. it got frustrating.
you found yourself crying yourself to sleep and asking why she had to come now! but you picked yourself up, you were not going down without a fight. so like a movie, you and el fought for mike. you didn’t know who mike liked. sometimes he would favor you more but sometimes he would favor her more.
like it was all some silly game
your friends didn’t recognize you. you disregarding almost everything else in your life for this. you couldn’t lose! you couldn’t give up now! you were so far in this stupid game. yet you were always tied, no matter how hard both of you tried to one-up each other. it’s be impossible and it wasn’t even like mike made it easier! he didn’t even notice you and el were fighting like lions for him.
over him…
the rest of the party sat on the sidelines, waiting for this dumb feud to be over. they all knew what was happening expect mike. he was oblivious to the fact he would accidentally flirt with one of you guys then do it the other day to the other one.
who he’d chose
but it was obvious? you had been there for mike since he was little. you were there when he got injuries and learned new things. when he failed algebra and had to take it in the summer or when he fell down the stairs and had to get stitches. who had held his hand while he was crying and getting pulled into the ER? you. who helped him all night with flashcards for a midterm? you. who gave him almost all the comic books stacked among his bedroom? you.
and you handed over your win, time after time. you let other girls talk to him and like him. you weren’t possessive or anything but wasn’t this your final time to win? wasn’t it finally your chance to have a happy ending? to put a stop to all those times to sat and stared mike look at another girl. why couldn’t this be the time he looked at you like that!
after all those years,
so you weren’t going to give up. you were going to make the first move if mike wasn’t going to. you picked up the phone that was on top of your bedroom dresser and punched in mike’s basement phone’s number. you felt like you were running out of time. like if you waited another second you would die from drowning or run out of air.
the phone was silent and you nervously tapped your foot. but he picked up. “hello?” you sighed in relief, “mike! it’s y/n! i have something to tell you and it’s urgent.” you were desperate to just get out a few words and end this. all of it.
“wait—wait y/n, can you tell me later?” he said. he sounded distracted but you ignored it, “nono! it’s urgent please!” mike finally agreed, “y/n i’m sorry but i have a date with el and i cant be more late, so just call me later!” he hung up.
i’d never thought i’d lose.

Can you maybe write something about will when he was younger did a comic about the reader and Jonathan and it's about them getting married or generally something about them being together, and it was long forgotten so when the Byers move out Jonathan and will find it, and Jonathan is really confused about why will wrote something like that and will says he did it because it's obvious Jonathan had/has a thing for the reader and he also totally thought they were dating until he asked joyce when they were getting married and she told him they weren't together and his little world just broke down?
prophecy | jonathan byers
Tumblr media
summary: will always thought jonathan was in love with his best friend. turns out, he had been right all along.
pairing: jonathan byers x gender neutral reader | side byler
warnings: none
note: aaaa i love this idea so much!!! i was heavily inspired by that jonathan and will scene in s4. even though will tells jonathan he'll always be there for him as well, we all know jonathan wouldn't want to bother his little brother with his own problems. but i couldn't help myself and wrote a lil byers pep talk :) i hope you enjoy!!!!
̟ ̇.˚︵‿୨♡୧‿︵˚.✩
“what’s this?” jonathan asked, walking up to his brother, who was emptying out some boxes on the other side of the room.
will stopped what he was doing and directed his attention towards jonathan. he was holding a drawing, one he recognized as his own.
“oh my god!” will laughed loudly, taking the piece of paper. “i can’t believe this is here. i’d forgotten all about it.”
“but what is it?” jonathan asked, not understanding the reason for the boy’s excitement.
“it’s you and y/n,” will said obviously. “getting married.”
“what?”
“i made it a couple of years ago,” he laughed to himself, still admiring the drawing. “i remember i asked them what their favorite flowers were, and i spent so long designing the ring.”
“but,” jonathan started, growing more confused by the second. “why would you draw us getting married?”
“because,” will glared at him, giving him an obvious look. “you totally liked them.”
“what are you talking about?”
will rolled his eyes and groaned loudly. he didn’t know if his brother was pretending or if he really was that oblivious. he guessed it was the latter.
“i thought you were dating. like, i was sure of it. you were together all the time, it just made sense. so i asked mom when you were getting married. that’s when she told me you two were just friends. honestly, i was heartbroken. i think i cried for a week.”
“when did this–” jonathan chuckled awkwardly, running a hand through his now sweaty hair. “when was this?”
“does it matter?” will handed the paper back. “i still can’t believe i was wrong, though. i could’ve sworn there was something going on.”
jonathan stayed silent, staring at the drawing in his hands. will had always been talented, ever since he was young. he had managed to recreate the color of your hair by blending some of his hundred and twenty crayons, and he had drawn the blue converse you always used to wear. in the picture, you two were holding hands, while fireworks and multicolored hearts exploded in the background.
jonathan smiled, noticing will had also portrayed your height difference. it had been a long time since the drawing, but you were still shorter than him.
“you weren’t.” he whispered. “you weren’t wrong. not about me, at least.”
“wait,” will said, astounded. “what?”
jonathan sighed, sitting down on the floor, glancing around the unfamiliar room, overflowed with their belongings. will sat down next to him.
“you’ve always been a good judge of character.” jonathan gave him a sad smile.
“but,” he shook his head. “why didn’t you ever do something?”
“what could i do?”
the answer seemed obvious to will, but the way jonathan had uttered the question with genuine exhaustion and hopelessness took him aback.
“sometimes i think it’s just scary to open up like that.” will started, his quiet voice echoing off the empty walls. “to say how you really feel. especially to people you care about the most. because, what if… what if they don’t like the truth?”
jonathan nodded as tears gathered in his eyes.
“they’ve been my best friend forever, and… you’re their friend too. what if i ruined everything? not just between me and them, but for you, as well? i would never forgive myself.”
“you’re my brother.” will whispered, placing a hand on the other boy’s shoulder. “and i love you. i would never want you to hide how you feel. no matter what.”
jonathan wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, and let out a chuckle, “when did you get so wise?”
“i learnt from the best.” will joked, squeezing jonathan’s shoulder. “now, here’s what we gotta do. you’re gonna invite them over for spring break. and we’ll come up with a plan so you can tell them how you feel. and luckily all goes well and this,” he pointed at the drawing. “will end up being a prophecy, or something.”
jonathan laughed, shaking his head.
“whatever happens, i'll be there for you. deal?” will asked, extending his hand. his brother stared at him for a second, before gripping his hand.
“deal.” he nodded, a teasing smile growing on his lips. “and you’ll invite mike.”
will’s face fell as he stammered, struggling for words, and jonathan burst into laughter, giving his brother a hug and tackling him to the ground.
“what? you think i don’t know my brother, too?”

"El never had romantic feelings for Mike"ers 🤝 "Mike had romantic feelings for El"ers
Y'all think y'all are arm wrestling bt it's actually called a handshake in most parts of the world.
Both come from some weird desire for romantic miIeven to have meant nothing/something for both.
Cuz everything has to be just right and fair and neatly tied in a bow. God forbid the gay boy have struggles with his sexuality or the straight girl get her heart broken in the process. Evil evil things. To have your feelings unrequited. Unless it's Will. Cuz he's single and has to stay single and pure and loyal and what not, and it's only temporary. Soon in a few years after the time skip at the end of the series he'll be rewarded for being reduced to a pathetic little sap with no social life beyond Jonathan, Mike and the horrors of having spidey sense for 2 seasons.
And yeah there will be cirque du soleil levels of acrobatics being performed to show why this story and narrative makes sense. And I'm not opposed to it for being that but just that on show that prides itself for show don't tell it neither shows nor tells and then there's outside the show telling by cast cuz inside the show showing was less subtle and more in the realm of not there at all.
MiIeven is NOT a "plot device" for Byler any more than Mike being revealed gay is a plot device for independent El. They're both self contained arcs for the respective characters. MiIeven thoroughly exploited the BSY dynamic with how their interactions were framed and played and okayed and filmed. It's incredibly condescending to fault the GA for buying into the self insert fantasy of nerdy boy gets supergirl when the show didn't shy away from profiting off of it. Regardless of Mike's impending sexuality. Especially because of the super ambiguity of Mike's sexuality it cannot be classified as anything but trope exploitation. Subversion where? Leaving some visuals here.
Tumblr media
El initiating the kiss in S1E6
And I'd love it if anyone explains them to me that's not the tired af "El's idea of romantic love comes from her watching soap operas" cuz she was shown watching it once. She was stuck in a cabin with a TV so she watched TV most of the time and daytime is soaps. You know what she (also) watched regularly? Westerns. Miami Vice.
Also El did make the first move in s1e7 to kiss Mike. Before Mike ever kissed her in s1e8. And before the soap operas n all other things. Point being. The BSY has always been BSYing.
Tumblr media
Poor babies being forced by Lucas, Nancy and daytime TV into making out and enjoying it. Tsk tsk. (S3E1)
Tumblr media
A forced to be flustered and blushing El after talking to her boyfriend.
Tumblr media
Time to make out some more. It hits different at 4:20. - Mike & El probably. Dunno it's on mute.
Tumblr media
Naive but powerful fawn rebelling against father for nerdy boyfriend. Ya. White American thing cuz Mike would be pissing his pants if he were anywhere else or maybe anyone else. (Can you imagine Lumax this way?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For God's sake your platonic soulmate and so called lesbian awakening's brother is dying there.
Tumblr media
Don't even understand the point of this shot. Since Mike never looked Billy's way. Or comforted Max. A glance at El that, idk what it meant, no mike crow expressions to guide me.
Tumblr media
Scenes from a Marriage (1973) dir. Ingmar Bergman
Tumblr media
Scenes from a Marriage (2021) dir. Hagai Levi
There's an intentional way in which the MiIeven scenes (not just the kisses 🤮) are filmed in a more "adult" way as opposed to the "cute teenaged romance" way that some people purport it is in contrast to Lumax and Duzie. (I guess they didn't go through puberty.🤷‍♀️) Heck even Jancy, Stancy never looked this weird even though sex was shown/ implied. (Because they were played by actors born in the 20th century and even then they weren't 13 🤷‍♀️.)
MiIeven is not a plot device for Byler. It is fan service. The adults shipping them and comparing them to various other adult couples isn't outta nowhere. Please compute. Which is why it was stretched for 4 seasons.
As of NOW Mike's sexuality is still plausible deniability and the breakup too is neither here nor there. It's NOT straightbaiting. Lmao. Not at all. It's fan service. Leaving the OBVIOUS BSY aside, the point neither party were forced into anything nor were they doing it to keep appearances cuz canonically NOBODY cared. Not Dustin, not Lucas, definitely not Will and I'm sure neither did Max.
El was a willing participant and initiator and Mike was also not opposed to it until puberty monster/feelings caught up with him. El has shown her attraction to guys and it is okay. There's no need to take that away from her cuz that is also an experience of girlhood. She barely has any experiences anyway. Let her have that.
It's the same for Mike. He's not some evil monster for being gay. Not anymore than Joyce was for being with Bob out of convenience and the fact that she liked him n didn't hate him. Mike does love El and cares about her deeply as all of S4 shows.
So to sum it up. Yes I smooshed 2 posts cuz I couldn't be arsed talking about these 2 AGAIN. But Mike and El were independent agents when they decided to embark on their disastrous romantic journey and Born Sexy Yesterday is REAL.
P.S. If you find this shit cute and y'all roll your eyes over byler kissing n what not (even in fics goddamnit). Hit your head against a spiked wall till you can't no more. Piss and love. 💙💛
P.P.S. Mike's the clingy one. NOT Will.

I know many Bylers want ot theorize that when Will decides to go the UD Mike will follow him. But I think it is crucial for Will to face the UD alone first for his character to progress. Sure Mike can help him but them spending the time together while Will is facing his own mystery and UD/Vecna connection seems weird. I want Byler moments but I need the characters and plot to make kind of sense.
I also wonder if instead of like Will and Mike being paired up alone maybe they will add other characters to help them like maybe Jancy? Not sure if it was intentional but when the last shot focused on Will's touching neck he had Nancy and Jonathan standing by his side. And the focus was mostly on them. It makes me wonder if he will be paired up with Nancy and Jonathan for some time. It would make sense as Nancy knows so much stuff about Vecna now and can connect mysteries about Will too as she's suspected the lights coming to life thing, n knows the UD is stuck in the time Will went missing. Jonathan would naturally help and stay by Will's side because Will is his bro and Nancy will be there too.
I totally agree with the part about Will facing things alone. Although, I’ve personally speculated that Mike might follow him initially and then they get seperated later down the line, perhaps when Will is nearing a personal confrontation with Vecna. I do definitely think that part of Will’s Upside Down journey should be faced alone, considering how personal it is to him. But of course, I can’t help but also wish that Will have more screentime with other characters. Hopefully they find a way to balance his personal journey with his relationship to other characters.
