Warnings: PG-13, may contain smut (pending), additional warnings specified per chapter. Contains inaccurate representations of history and time.
Disclaimer: Though the intent of this drabble series is not meant to be religious, there are religious references (e.g. angels, heaven vs hell, devil, Greek mythology, mentions of multiple deities rather than one). They are not accurate nor do they necessarily represent mine or SVT's beliefs. All religions are welcomed here.
A/N: Important notes for this series under the cut!
The intent and structure of this series is meant to be unchronological. If the timeline and there seems to be a lot of holes doesn't make sense - good! That's the point. We’ll be skipping between past and present. As the series goes along the pieces will start falling together - promise.
The point in time in which each chapter takes place will be labeled accordingly (e.g. 300 BC vs present day). The chapters labeled "present" refer to the a current timeline revolving around the implied problem in the original drabble!
This au is completely fictional. Fantastical historical, if you will? That said, major events mentioned here are very similar to/inspired by the ones in world history! Present day is a modern dystopia: medieval meets technologically advanced? 😬
This is a drabble series! The chapters are meant to be short (1K-ish or less).
Though the idea came from Jeonghan's character(?) in the HOT MV, the plot was inspired by a multitude of Greek myths, namely Pandora's Box and Icarus and Daedulus.
Updates will be irregular to say the least (I have two ongoing series, one in the works, and drabbles for previous works to finish) . . . I'm publishing this on a whim since I have so many ideas bursting for this series, I couldn't keep it all to myself! I apologize if there are long periods without updates. Thank you be patient with me and waiting to see this unfold.
That said, taglists are the best way to stay updated! Please send an ask if you're interested in being a part of it. This is the best way to keep track of them. DMs and comments are easily lost.

Prologue
Harald Sigurdson x Goddess!Reader
Summary: Prince Harald of Norway has returned after years of staying in England, and the Saint Brice's Day massacre has changed him nonetheless. With the arrival of the Greenlanders, whom many of the townspeople of Kattegat look to, he sets his eyes on a woman who he has never seen before. He knew every person in the city, personally; so who was she?
Warnings: Blood, swearing, death, a tiny bit of anti-christian insults (let's be real here, if you're on Tumblr, you're unholy, don't deny it 😭), also a considerable amount of rewriting of Norse mythology
hel (the realm) is referred to as helheim to tell the two apart
please enjoy :)
Only a few had made it back alive from the cursed day. Many had fallen victim to the wrath of those had blessed the Norse with a gift that was one of land that the great vikings had once led great armies to conquer. The bonds formed, the land cultivated, and the livestock raised; all taken away in a matter of hours. Everything they had fought for was gone. Or so the Saxons had hoped.
And those who had returned from their time serving the new revolution in England had returned, only to see the turmoil erupting in Norway.
Jarl Haakon stood atop the second floor of the longhouse, gazing upon the newly returned warriors. Her name was quietly mentioned under the breath of a shieldmaidenm, which caused her to turn her head ever so slightly.
"Y/N." She smiled, leaning forward on the railing and gesturing the woman to stand next to her.
"Estrid." The woman folded her arms across her chest. "You wanted to bring something to my attention?"
"There was a man killed on the outskirts of the forest near Uppsala." Jarl Haakon paused, shifting her gaze from the first floor, to the second. "I want to know who killed him. Some say ghosts, others--Christians..."
"You want to know if Christians are waging a war with nonbelievers." Y/N sighed. "I know Kattegat does not truly have an established religion, and many people travel through here each day, but you know I would not let this city fall into their hands."
"That is not what I fear." The Jarl leaned in to whisper. "I fear any human within a certain distance being decimated by your abilities."
The two chuckled.
"You know, life would have been far more enjoyable if I had you as a sister in my early years." Y/N fixed the knife in her back pocket, before fixing her sleeves. "I should be on my way."
She turned to face a man in a leather and steel tunic, merely centimeters away from, her face. Y/N was infuriated that someone failed to acknowledge her sense of personal space. The silver necklace with the sign of the Christian God reflected the light off of the torches flame into her eyes, causing her to be blinded for a few seconds. After blinking a several times, she looked back at the man she was facing.
"Hello--" The man began to start his sentence.
"No." Y/N lightly shoved him and tried to exit through the staircase but he placed his hand lightly on her left shoulder to stop her.
"Have you no idea who I am?" He began to have a smug smirk plastered across his face. "I am Prince Harald Si-"
"Oh I'm sorry, I have very quick question for you." She clasped her hands together and took a step forward towards Harald.
"Then ask." He replied softly.
"Does it look like I give a shit?" She laughed and Harald's smiled faded in return.
He was left speechless. No woman in Kattegat had dared to speak to him in such a way. It was even deemed an honor to speak to him in the first place. Harald was in such a flustered state that he had completely forgot what he was supposed to talk to Jarl Haakon about. Instead, he decided to pursue a new objective.
"Who was that?" He raised a brow at Jarl Haakon who had gestured to the same woman on the ground floor.
A man had grabbed Y/N by the waist, and she had immediately slammed his head so violently on the table, that it had resounded with a large banging sound. The man was stunned, and he couldn't move a muscle. She was holding a knife to his head, and she had not even moved a single facial muscle. In a way, she was seemingly stoic. Of course the longhouse was loud due to all the chatting and singing, and all of Y/N's statements were completely inaudible from the distance Harald and Jarl Haakon were at, but it didn't halt them from staring immediately her.
"Oh, Y/N?" Jarl Haakon shook her head and chuckled. "She helps to identify causes of death among those who died of unnatural reasons. Helps us to discover if there is any threat to our city. And the whole of Norse lands in the general region I assume."
"She is fierce, I dare say." Harald glanced at the mad who was still stunned at on eof the tables. "Is she always like this?"
"Yes, and do not tell my shieldmaidens this, but she is far more deadly than any of them may be."
"Why is that?"
"Y/N knows of every region to strike a person that will render them in incredible pain, or even dead."
"And what makes her different from any warrior?" Harald ran a hand through his hair before leaning his back on the railing of the second floor.
"As I said before, she deals with corpses, even going as far to cut them open to see which organs, and which bones are the most at risk of being damaged, to eventually kill someone." Jarl Haakon pointed to the man Y/N had fought, who was frantically screaming. "I would assume that man is permanently paralyzed."
"How do you know?"
"She likes to leave people incapacitated, knowing that they could do nothing to stop her from doing it again." She paused. "So if you are trying to question me on what Y/N is like, please do not try. That woman prefers to be alone, and unfortunately, I have no intention in seeing you die just yet."
~●~●~●~●~
Y/N closely evaluated the body that was brought to her. There was a large puncture wound through the man's chest, almost as if he tried to pull the arrow that was once there, out himself. It must have been one of those arrows that had curved points, which were extremely common among Christian warriors. She turned around to face a small wooden desk, where she unrolled a letter describing the incident that must have taken the man's life. The black print was very distinct, most likely written by the Jarl herself.
Y/N,
It was suspected that this man was killed along the path to Uppsala, near one of the only rivers that crosses the path. Whispers among the people say that it is the work of Jarl Kåre, but I cannot confirm, nor deny such accusations. I was going to send Leif and some shieldmaidens to investigate the area but I do not wish to put them in such danger, should Kåre truly be responsible for this murder. Being the most deadly person in the whole of Scandinavia currently makes you the most capable.
--Estrid
"Congruatu-fucking-lations me." Y/N reached under the desk to grab her sword, and a small satchel full of food. "I believed to be done with thousands of years of working with the dead, and yet, I place myself in the exact position that Odin had forced me into. Shit!" She hissed.
As she was getting ready, a knock resounded at the front door of her house. Y/N was sheathing her sword as she raced to the door to answer. They formally introduced themselves as the parents of the man who was killed. She nodded, and allowed them to take the body to burn, for a proper burial.
"Do you think he will enter the hall of the Aesir?" The woman came in and placed her hand upon her son's left one.
Y/N closed her eyes for a mere minute, and her mind was immediately in a bright land, with a table that stretched as far as the eye could see. The distinct Norse architecture was found in the houses the lined the edges of the table, around 20 meters back from it. Shouts and the clanking of cups of mead filled the air, alongside the sounds of large doors at the one end of the table where Y/N's mind had placed her. A man, around six feet tall, with bright shamrock eyes glared at the sun, before immediately looking around, finally resting his eyes upon her.
"Where am I?" He was shaking frantically. "Am I? No I couldn't be? Am I dead?"
"Rolf I presume." Y/N crossed her arms. "Welcome to Valhalla."
"No, I am no warrior. I do not belong here. I do not deserve to be given such high honors by dying to a Christian!" Rolf turned his attention to a man handing him a cup of ale. "And you. Who are you?"
"Another goddess that has taken over Valhalla in Odin's absence." Y/N gestured one of the men sitting at the table to hand her a cup of mead. "I am Hel, but please, Y/N will do just fine."
"Odin is gone?" He paused. "So you are in charge of choosing who gets into Valhalla?"
"Yes."
"Why me?"
"You have a good heart. Your sister has been diseased since birth and yet you risk everything to fight for her cure." Y/N flashed a quick smile. "The only reason you died that day was because Haakon was paying you to search for Jarl Kåre--and that money was going to be used to buy medicine for her."
"So I have died for nothing." Rolf dropped his cup and buried his face in his hands. "My sister will have no one to care for her. Our parents--they abandoned her! Left her to the wolves, and I-" He shook his head. "I'm gone."
"Actually," Y/N pointed to the left of him, at a small blond child, tugging at his tunic.
"Tove!" Rolf tightly hugged his younger sister tightly. "I didn't know children went to Valhalla."
"They do now."
"How can I thank you? Please, if there is anything I can do--"
"A name. Or features." Y/N waved her hand and images of three men appeared from what looked to be black smoke. "Which one of these men is responsible for... Um..." She stared at Tove who waved her hand, realizing that death was going to be a drastic topic to mention in front of a child. "You know."
"This one." Rolf's voice broke as he pointed to the man on the left, with Christian sigils lining his neck, and a cross carved into his forehead.. "He--"
"No need." Y/N placed her hand on the man's shoulder. "You have suffered enough. Please, enjoy yourself."
The horns resounded, and all of the warriors at the table rushed out of their seats, weapon in hand. Tove went towards a little bench to show her dolls to her brother, and Rolf soon mouthed a "thank you."
Y/N opened her eyes, knowing that only seconds had passed since she closed them. While Rolf's mother cried for her son, his father simply stared at the corpse in anger, almost in disappointment.
"He will go to Valhalla."
"Thank the Gods!" Rolf's mother looked up.
"But you both will not share the same fate." Y/N chuckled. "Do you know what Hel does to those who abandon their sick and dying children?"
"How do you know about that?" Rolf's father growled, almost lunging at Y/N. "No one knows anything about what happened to--"
"Tove, was it?"
Rolf's father unsheathed his sword and swung it at her, but she caught the blade her hand. It clearly drew blood, but Y/N did not flinch. She grabbed the sword by its blade and hit his head with the hilt. Rolf's mother looked at her in horror, as Y/N just sighed in response.
"Now, take your son's body and leave, or it will be the both of your corpses upon this table before nightfall." Y/N gestured them out, and Rolf's father immediately picked up his son, carrying him out, with Rolf's mother following close behind.
Y/N closed the door behind her, as she left her home. She glared at the cut on her hand that was a few centimeters long, as it quickly healed to the point where it was if nothing happened.
The stables near her home harbored her horse, Orphnaeus, whose coat and mane were as dark as the depths of the place where he remained for many years. After escaping Hades and Persephone many times, and as a gift for helping to ensure peace in both of the gods' realms, the two gifted Y/N their most reckless, and violent horse.
"Hello again." She placed a hand upon the horse's head as Orphnaeus laid it over her shoulder. "I know, I missed you too. But we have another quest."
~●~●~●~●~
The area where Rolf died was soaked in blood. Some parts were dried and others looked as if they were still fresh. It looked like the Christians had been taking believers of the Norse pantheon here to die, every time. Y/N took a step back and a black smoke began to appear in the air, turning into the shapes of the people who had their lives taken in this very spot. The screams she heard in her head--humans of every gender, every age, and animals as well.
"Fuck me." She looked around for any signs of the Christians, and she began to hear the trotting of horses nearby.
Instead of hiding, she merely stood up and stretched, as well as making her magic disappear before the men arrived. She turned to face a group of men wearing a necklace with a cross on it. The man with the cross carved in his forehead was the first to dismount his horse.
"Haakon sent you, of all people to combat us?" The warrior stepped forward, holding the point of the sword against Y/N's throat. "Kåre expected better."
"Well then." She placed her hand on his shoulder, which he raised a brow at. "You didn't expect this either."
The warrior's men watched in horror as he was beginning to age rapidly. His skin clinged tightly on his bones, as if all the muscles in his body lost their moisture. He was soon, a pale grey, and his body fell to the ground. His right-hand-man stepped forward, and a few thuds were heard as half of the men fell to the ground without warning.
"Devil-spawn!" He clutched his necklace tightly, and Y/N chuckled.
The men who collapsed, rose again, and their eyes reflected no light. It was if their souls had left their bodies to fend for themselves. They surrounded the elite, and a yell was heard from behind Y/N.
"Y/N! Wait!" A voice screamed, and she turned around.
There came familiar face. An unfortunately, familiar face. Prince Harald unsheathed his sword and raised it against one of the undead soldiers, and it smacked him with the hilt of its axe, rendering him unconscious. Harald was about to have his head fall upon the rocks that surrounded the edges of the river, but Y/N caught him in time. With one arm, she held his entire body up, as it was wrapped around his back, and with the other, she reached for her pouch of food, which had been emptied the day before, and had been stuffed with river reeds. This had been tucked under his neck to position his body in a slightly more conformable position.
"Thank you." Y/N said to the soldier, and cocked her head to the side to signal the undead to kill the rest of the living soldiers.
After the last man had been slain, the undead fell to the ground. Y/N sat next to Harald, before looking up to see Haakon and the shieldmaidens walking towards her. They had not been searching for her, but rather, Harald, who was supposed to spend his time with Freydis.
"He saw me." Y/N sharply exhaled. "You need to--"
"Lie to him? Make it look as if the shieldmaidens killed them?" Haakon smiled. "I know."
"Tell him he hit his head too hard, and he started hallucinating." Y/N stood up, plucking a hair off of his head.
"What's this for?"
"I don't know, the man seems, wrong."
"What do you mean by that."
"I don't feel right around him."
"You desire him?"
"No, I just--" Y/N paused. "One of the Norns lives in this forest. I need answers."
"This is strange, even for you." Haakon gestured one of her shield-maidens to alter the scene in order to make it look as if they were killed by them.
"I just don't understand him. He seems human, but--"
"Go wherever you need to. We will take care of this."
~●~●~●~●~
Y/N dismounted Orphnaeus, slowly approaching the small, moss-blanketed cottage in the woods. She had felt extremely uneasy after her confrontation with Harald, but she could not understand why. Perhaps it was because he reminded her of Baldur. After all, the humans never began to understand their story. Any form of romantic love for Y/N was outlawed by her father, Loki. She had truly fallen for Baldur, and he had felt the same for her. But by his father, he was forced to marry Nanna, a goddess of joy and happiness. And once Loki had caught a hint of such a relationship forming, he had tricked Baldur's brother into killing him, ending any chance he would have to spend his life with Y/N.
After all, it's what drove her mad. Not only his death, but the losses during the days of Ragnarok. Fenrir, alongside Loki and Angrboda, had been angered by how Baldur had attempted to "plague" their Jötunn bloodline, and led a battle against the gods in Asgard. Jörmungandr had attempted to halt such a push, and he inevitably caused more trouble--as the seas began to churn violently. Thor was sent to subdue him. Y/N, herself, sat in Helheim, weeping for the loss of her loved one, sending a Jötunn in her place to fight in the great war. All that was left was 8 shattered realms, each of which were taken into control by herself. In the end, all the major gods that remained were her and her 2 brothers. The fates on the other hand, fell to Midgard, condemned to live the rest of their life there.
Only now did Y/N begin to realize all of her trauma, and perhaps even the reasons behind why she had seemingly pushed everyone away since she had arrived on Midgard. A Goddess of 8 realms was not only a privilege, but a curse. But she would never accept that small beat her heart skipped when she saw Harald for the first time. What if he was human? He'd grow old, and die, while she lived until the universe met its bitter end.
She reached to knock on the small overgrown cottage's door, and the Norn opened it immediately. Unphased, she gestured Y/N inside, who immediately sat on the stool propped against the wall next to the furnace of the house.
"Harald Sigurdsson, hm?" The Norn placed a few leaves in a cup of hot water and sat it on the table in the middle of the room.
"Unfortunately."
"He makes you feel uneasy? Does he not?"
"Yes. And for what I believe may be good reason. Or, for a bad reason, depending how you look at it." Y/N pulled the small brown hair out of her pocket and set it on the table.
A brief silence filled the room as the Norn stared at the hair.
"I assume this is the part where you call me insane, and then I lea-"
"No." The Norn paused.
"'No' I am insane, or 'no' I should leave?" Y/N raised a brow.
"Not entirely human." The Norn looked up to the goddess. "I, just don't understand how you knew that."
"I mean, if he's some type of creature, or god, I should know." She paused. "The Christian pantheon has agreed to leave the Norse lands under our pantheon's jurisdiction."
"It is not for that reason. We Nornir have lost much of our power after Ragnarok, and it seems that Ymir has destined it to fall into the hands of another."
A blank stare was once again, plastered across Y/N's face.
"Everytime I seek guidance from one of you three, I am left with more questions." Y/N sighed, and turned around to leave, knowing that the Norns were not known for their subtlety.
"You detected he was not of our gods. Only the Norns have the strength to accomplish such a thing."
"So I have some of your power? That makes so much of a difference in a pantheon with DWINDLING AMOUNTS OF FOLLOWERS." Y/N growled, and furiously swung the door open. "How hard is it to tell me what I want to hear? I have sought guidance twice in thousands of years compared to most of the other Æsir. And yet, I recieve the same treatment."
"Deceiver, deceiver. Son of the fallen Once graced." The Norn sighed. "He is Harald's father. Now, leave me, since you clearly in need of discovered the power he who came before has blessed you with. While I sip my tea and wallow in my suffering once more."
"How useful." Y/N hit her forehead against the door of the Norn's cottage before slamming it shut.
She didn't know many gods outside her own pantheon, so the Norn's information was near useless. It was time she had taken upon a new quest: one that involved solving a mystery of the living, rather than the dead.

BASICS
FULL NAME: HADES
» MEANING: Hades [ Greek Aïdes (“the Unseen”), also called Pluto or Pluton (“the Wealthy One” or “the Giver of Wealth”), in ancient Greek religion, god of the underworld. Hades was a son of the Titans Cronus and Rhea, and brother of the deities Zeus, Poseidon, Demeter, Hera, and Hestia. ]
VERSE: How To Kill A King.
OTHER NAMES: Hades uses the name AIDONEUS KING/AIDAN KING whenever he visits the human realm. Aidoneus, Aides (meaning, like Hades, the unseen), Pluto (the rich one), Ditis Pater, Dis Pater, Dis(all meaning the rich one), Orcus (killer), Polydectes (the receiver of many), Clymenus (the Illustrious), Eubulus (the giver of good counsel), etc. He is the "one of many names". As a Turkish Lord, Hades is simply known as Kara.
AGE: Undetermined; it varies in human form, he appears to be in his late 20'a, late 40's.
DATE OF BIRTH: The exact age of Hades is never given. However, in Greek mythology, he is older than the Greek nation. He was born not long after the creation of the world. He is the eldest son of Cronus and Rhea, and he is younger than his three sisters, Hera, Hestia, and Demeter.
PLACE OF BIRTH: The most common story is that Hades was born to the Great Mother goddess Rhea and Kronos (Father Time) on the island of Crete, along with his brothers Zeus and Poseidon.
SPECIES: God.
POWERS: Invisibility, Riches, Power over the dead. Hades is the lord of the dead and ruler of the nether world, Hades sits on a throne made of ebony, and carries a scepter. He also has a helmet, given to him by the Cyclopes, which can make him invisible. Hades rules the dead, assisted by various helpers, such as Thanatos and Hypnos, the ferryman Charon, and the hound Cerberus. strengths include his wealth of the earth, especially precious metals; persistence; and determinedness. His weaknesses include his passion for Persephone.
OCCUPATION: God of the Dead and King of the Underworld.
GENDER: Cisgender Male.
PERSONALITY
Hades was depicted as stern and pitiless, unmoved by prayer or sacrifice (like death itself). Forbidding and aloof, he never quite emerges as a distinct personality from the shadowy darkness of his realm, not even in the myth of his abduction of Persephone.

HISTORY: As Pluto, Hades is the God of Wealth (as plants and metal come from the underworld) and is hence highly regarded. Otherwise, as God of the Dead, he is feared, and Hades is not a good thing to speak. He will not help people if they give him sacrifices, though will occasionally answer people's curses. To pray to him, one must pound on the ground with rods or their hands. He was only worshiped as the God of the Underworld on Elis, though, as Pluto, he was more widly venerated, often with Dionysius, Demeter, and, of course, Persephone.
He is often referred to as the "Dark Zeus" or "Zeus of the Underworld", and is usually portrayed in a similar way as Zeus, except with dark hair, and a rather depressing look on his face. He, like the other male first generation Olympians, is seen as strong, muscular, and bearded. When the male Gods drew lots for the Universe, Hades drew the Underworld. He never seems especially unhappy with his lot (it's Poseidon who rebels...not Hades, contrary to popular modern literature), and rarely appears on the surface. In fact, he was only seen to have appeared to flirt with Mintha, abduct Persephone, and be cured of an arrow wound inflicted by Hercules. However, if he did wish to appear, he has a helmet of invisibility, so no one would know. He is often one of the Olympains, but is rarely on Olympus (which, like the earth he shares jointly with his brothers). In many stories, even, he looses his chair to Demeter as he is so rarely there.
Hades is seen as very faithful to his wife (especially when considering Zeus and Poseidon), and is only known to have flirted with two nymphs, Leuce and Mintha, both of whom were swiftly changed into plants by Persephone. (In some stories, Leuce dies of a natural cause and Hades changes her, after her death, into a poplar.)
Above all, though, Hades is a just, terrifying, and inexorable God. He is childless, and his wife often does not love him. (Even if she does, she is gone for half the year) He is "grim" and "fearsome", but he is neither evil, nor unjust. In fact, he may be the one just Greek God.
ROMANTIC HISTORY: Though the attempted consort of Mintha (changed into a mint plant before he had the chance) and sometimes the attempted, or successful, consort of Leuce (changed into a popular), he is usually seen as being very faithful to Persephone.

A kumiho or gumiho (Korean: 구미호; Hanja: 九尾狐, literally "nine-tailed fox") is a creature that appears in the folktales on East Asia and legends of Korea. It is similar to the Chinese huli jing, the Japanese kitsune and the Vietnamese hồ ly tinh. It can freely transform into a beautiful woman often set out to seduce men, and eat their liver or heart (depending on the legend). There are numerous tales in which the kumiho appears, several of which can be found in the encyclopedic Compendium of Korean Oral Literature (한국 구비문학 대계/韓國口碑文學).
Mythology
The old Chinese text Classic of Mountains and Seas, the earliest record to document the nine-tailed fox, mentioned that the fox with nine tails came from and lived in the country called Qingqiu (靑丘) three hundreds miles east, the term meaning "green hill" interpreted as the country or region of the east and was later historically used to refer to the region of Korea at least since the era during the Three Kingdoms of Korea. However, the name of Gojoseon (called Joseon in the record), the Korean kingdom that existed along with other minor states of the Korean peninsula at the time, was separately introduced in the same record.
Kumiho and other versions of the nine-tailed fox myths and folklores share a similar concept. All explain fox spirits as being the result of great longevity or the accumulation of energy, said to be foxes who have lived for a thousand years, and give them the power of shapeshifting, usually appearing in the guise of a woman. However, while China's huli jing and Japan's kitsune are often depicted as either good, evil or neutral, the kumiho is almost always treated as a malignant figure who feasts on human flesh. It is unclear at which point in time Koreans began viewing the kumiho as a purely evil creature, since many ancient texts mention the benevolent kumiho assisting humans (and even make mentions of wicked humans tricking kind but naïve kumiho).
In later literature, kumiho were often depicted as bloodthirsty half-fox, half-human creatures that wandered cemeteries at night, digging human hearts out from graves. The fairy tale The Fox Sister depicts a fox spirit preying on a family for their livers.
Knowledge beads
The most distinctive feature that separates the kumiho from its two counterparts (Japanese kitsune, and Chinese huli jing) is the existence of a 'yeowoo guseul' (여우구슬, literally meaning fox marble/bead) which is said to consist of knowledge. According to Korean mythology, the yeowoo guseul provides power to the kumiho and knowledge (and intelligence) to people if they can steal and swallow one. The kumiho can absorb humans' energy with it. The method of absorbing energy with the "yeowoo guseul" resembles a "deep kiss" (i.e. a kiss using a tongue). The kumiho sends the yeowoo guseul into people's mouths and then retakes it with their tongues. If that person swallows the yeowoo guseul, however, and then observes "sky, land, and people", each observation gives the observer preternatural knowledge. But the person fails to watch the "sky" in most tales, so they get a special ability but not the most important one.
Powers
Most legends state that while a gumiho was capable of changing its appearance, there is still something persistently fox-like about it (i.e. a foxy face, a set of ears, or the tell-tale nine tails) or a magical way of forcing; its countenance changes, but its nature does not.
Although ancient legends indicated that kumiho could help humans, in modern times, these animals are known to eat human livers and hearts. They usually carry out their evil acts by tricking people into consuming their organs.
Unlike Japanese kitsunes, which are portrayed as having multiple tails and magical abilities, kumiho is a nine-tailed creature all throughout their lives. According to Korean mythology, if a kumiho doesn’t eat human flesh for a thousand years, it might transform into a human. This is because the animal’s soul can still seek human flesh.
**Akira is deemed to be very strong even at a young age as a kumiho. She fights well because of her extensive training and has the ability to use her kumiho powers of bending and stopping time, appearing and disappearing, etc. Although sometimes, she can be impulsive. Akira is trained in taekwondo, sword fight, and other forms of martial arts. She also boxes often with Seungyong.

Zipna, Chief Attendant of Turan
view this post on wordpress.com
Zipna is attested chiefly on Etruscan mirrors with Turan. As seen on the Leningrad mirror, Zipna is the chief attendant of Turan’s circle, bringing alabastron and perfume dipper. She appears as a well-addressed woman with wings, making her another Lasa in Turan’s circle. In her known depictions, Zipna appears with Turan and in some capacity related to beauty and cosmetics.
Zipna appears in a romantic scene with Atunis and Turan, holding a jar and a rod to apply the ointment. She stands behind Turan, while the other attendants of Turan dance around the mirror. She stands behind Turan, while the other attendants of Turan dance around the mirror. The large swan is Turan’s personal swan named Tusna. Surrounding the mirror are Turan’s other attendants, Alpan, Achvizr, Munthuch, Mean, Hathna, with an unknown man and woman.
Figure 1. Etruscan mirror with Tusna, Atunis, Turan and Zipna in the center and Alpan, Achvizr, Munthuch, Mean, Hathna, along with an unknown man and woman flying around the edges. From An Archive of Images of Etruscan Mythology.
Figure 2. Thalna, Zipna, Turan and Atunis: consummation of the marriage. Etruscan mirror in Tarquinia, Museo Archeologico Nazionale
She also appears in a mirror that depicts the union of adult Atunis and Turan. Along with a masculine Thalna, the two adorn the couple—Thalna holds a wreath and Zipna releases the perfume that announces the union of Turan and Atunis. In this capacity Zipna appears to be related to legitimising a union through the usage of perfume. Unlike her other depictions, Zipna lacks wings, which is not unusual for one of the aiser, especially for a member of Turan’s circle.
Considering her role in bringing Turan her makeup and perfumes, we can assume that Zipna is a goddess associated with perfume, beauty, and adorning oneself—perhaps even sexuality. marriage, and romance, considering her usage of perfume to legitimise a union. We can also take the alabastron and perfume as her symbols, as she is portrayed as holding them.
Worship wise, honouring Zipna will likely have to mostly be built upon personal gnosis. However, considering her known depictions, one can honour her by offering cosmetics, perfumes, and other beauty related items. Honouring her may also be done through self-care and doing your makeup, beckoning her to one’s side to guide your hand. While today dressing up is often done alone, Turan always has her circle to adorn her. Beauty and care then is a communal act, a moment to come together and smile at your features. If marriage is ever a wish to come, Zipna then can be invoked to bless the union with her divine aromatics.

Okay so THIS is going to be the big official Alastor info post covering portrayal notes & other little bits & pieces about the muse in an effort to give myself & others a reference on how I plan to write him & a little bit of info that I think is important to cover for good faith & transparency reasons. Due to some of the sensitive nature of this post please read on with caution. This post contains mentions of creates in Native American folklore & mythology. Out of respect these creatures names will be censored & will be mentioned as little as possible, however I believe it is necessary to cover them in some way as they are canonlogically stated to be sources of heavy inspo for the character which is very obvious to the text. The post also contains mentions of real life bigotry & religion, please read on with caution !
Lets get the messy stuff out of the way first. I know its been admitted that Alastor takes heavy inpso from W*ndigo but I ACTUALLY personally think Alastor is infinitely more similar to the slightly less popular mythology of Sk*n W*lk*rs & I am pointing this out souly because of how many similarities there is in Alastor’s design / history & these creatures as opposed to the fandoms silly obsession with him literally being a W*ndigo which he's actually literally not & which is very disrespectful all around so no, I will not be portraying Alastor as actually either of these creatures & anyone in the fandom trying to say this is what he literally is, is factually wrong on multiple levels. He’s a demon. Folks really have no reason not to leave it at that, god.
Anyway, in the same vein I am not Navajo & I don’t want to be disrespectful to Navajo culture so I’ll always do my best to keep things tasteful & vague, which is why I am also censoring the names of BOTH the creatures in question here & this will be the last time I actually mention either of them if I can help it, but this character shares sooo many traits with these beings, the latter more than the former, & this isn’t even the only thing I want to address here with Alastor. Even though Alastor is literally NOT one of these creatures they were used for inspiration so there is & always will be a big overlap in aesthetics & visuals that will probably be associated to them no matter what I do to try separate them from who / what Alastor actually is.
Another inpso stated for the character was Dr. Facilier & this actually furthers the fact that there is almost infinite similarities between Alastor & Sk*n W*lk*r myths, while the same can’t be said about the W*ndigo. The only similarities Alastor has with W*ndigo are the bastardisations of W*ndigo in popular horror media which came about due to frequently being mixed with & confused with Sk*n w*lk*rs. In fact almost all popular media’s take on W*ndigo’s freaky traits aside from the cannibalism are actually attributed to sk*n w*lk*rs & are NOT traditional to W*ndigo themselves, W*ndigo actually have nothing to do with deer or stags & do not resemble them in any way. These likeness are traced back to a very old movie where inspo for the appearance of the creature was taken from werewolves, but anyway moving on & back to Dr. Facillier
The other thing I want to mention is that its been made pretty clear that Alastor is, in fact, a “Witch Doctor” type of character. He is a bokor. He is more so than anything HEAVILY linked to Vodou / “Voodoo” which is actually another complication with the character as the “Voodoo” we see with Alastor is what we call “Hollywood Voodoo” which is pretty much a racist parody & demonization of Voodoo sensationalised by white folks for media. If not obvious the problem here is Vodou / Voodoo is an African religion. Its an actual legitimate religion & popular portrayals of it being evil, scary dark magic is both totally false & also extremely racist & disrespectful. Vodou / Voodoo practitioners are still victims of hate crimes to this very day.
So, again, without trying to be insane & going too far into all the bad parts of all this & being overly critical of everything, I want to state up front that while I CANNOT remove these things from the character entirely I’ll do my best to handle them in a way that I hope to minimize any offence. To start with I wont be portraying Alastor’s magic as “Voodoo” as such. I’ll be placing it down to Hoodoo which is more general occult & less associated to the actual religion. That being said given these things will always be related in someway, what does draw from Voodoo I will try to handle in a more empowering way as opposed to a demonising way, although I realise that may seem contradictory when Alastor is a literal demon.
But I feel like I can kinda lessen the negative parts of this with the fact that IMO, Alastor is a POC. For me he is very much mixed race but its not exactly a perfect secret that Alastor’s not white. In my personal headcanon his mother was of African decent & most likely practised Voodoo in its true form as a religion, where Alastor learned what he did to use in his own personal way, removed from the actual religion. This makes the most sense to me given Voodoo is an exclusive religion & you don’t just sign up & you’re in. Its usually passed down.
I also wanna just share a quote from an anthropologist that studied this stuff named Ira Lowenthal. This is in regards to the origin of Voodoo & its practise among African slaves.
““They were treated as cattle. As animals to be bought and sold; worth nothing more than a cow. Often less. Vodou is the response to that. Vodou says ‘no, I’m not a cow. Cows cannot dance, cows do not sing. Cows cannot become God. Not only am I a human being - I’m considerably more human than you. Watch me create divinity in this world you have given me that is so ugly and so hard. Watch me become God in front of your eyes.”“
This is kind of where my head is at when I say when I come at the strong influence & direct display of Voodoo in Alastor’s entire existence with a more empowering approach as opposed to something innately bad / scary / evil. Because I know while Alastor is a demon he is using his powers to navigate hell in a comfortable way, taking down powerful demon overlords as opposed to being downtrodden & treated as a lowly human soul. I think as a POC who lived in the 1910s-1930s Alastor is very used to tackling & navigating oppression & having others think they can push him around as a result, only for him to continually subvert this via his own cunning & merit.
Also to put it out there I made another post wondering if/how this stuff will be addressed in canon (Deleted I guess, smh) cause the fact of the matter is Alastor’s “Voodoo” is displayed in canon with literal Veves (these are real Veves. Some of them are broken or drawn slightly differently to IRL but they are the real thing, none of them are fictional or ‘made up’ Veves.)
So what Alastor is suppose to be doing when his powers come up is “”voodoo””. As a result Alastor’s powers are, obviously IMO, not drawing from hell. They seem to draw from within himself / he's accessing another realm. Which explains a lot about his powers & how powerful he is & was able to become rapidly despite being a “human soul” & the canon having noted the kind of power Alastor was able to wield from day one being unheard of for a human soul. But yeah, not sure how or if this is gonna get addressed but I’ll be interested to see if it does.
So now that THATS all out of the way I’m gonna go back over my other more general notes for him. I don’t claim to know all the Alastor trivia or anything so I might be missing some things but its fine, I like to just make stuff up in the meantime so until canon starts giving me some more solid content for Alastor these are just some thoughts in various states of development:
A lot of this was mentioned on my old multi but I’m gonna use this post cover some stuff I’ve already mentioned, to update some things & to add some new things :
I like to view Alastor in life as having some relationship with medicine but I think the decision I’ve come to is that Alastor was less a legitimate physician & more an unlicensed surgeon. I think Alastor may have perhaps aspired to be more of a real physician but never actually made it to being a legitimate medical practitioner, despite his talent. That being said, it wouldn’t have been unusual to find Alastor preforming “back ally” procedures for the rich & the criminally inclined alike. Alastor was perhaps best described as a jack of all trades, with vaguely con-man tendencies. He knows the hustle. This ability to do a “little bit of everything” meant Alastor would occasionally “preform” in small time theatre. This was actually where he was picked up by a radio station & employed as a host as this was a fairly common occurrence at the time.
As its also been state that he was a serial killer with a twisted moral code but I’ll touch on this in a little bit. Its been said Alastor is a man of duality & I think him presenting himself as clean cut, well bread radio host by day with some secretive sketchy hobbies that lead to him being a somewhat “” satanic ”” butcher by night as his demeanour fits in well with this theme. Duality is also a common theme in Voodoo & the beliefs & spirits therein.
In my mind one of Alastor’s good qualities is that he is fiercely anti-misogyny which brings me to Alastor’s odd moral code. He has a deep seated hatred for men who treat women badly. Despite all the underhanded & bad things Alastor has done & is capable of doing, Alastor was very against abuse toward women. In my portrayal none of Alastor’s victims were / are women, they are all men & violence / disrespect toward women was a big factor in Alastor’s choice of victim. Alastor was noted to have a very close / fond relationship with his mother which is a factor in where his deep respect of women stems from.
In my eyes Alastor’s father was possibly French & white, though I’m not sure if he knew him very well or if he was in Alastor’s life at all. Alastor himself is white passing or ‘racially ambiguous’, something which he was able to use to his advantage in the white man’s world but that being said, given Alastor is not actually white, his fairer skin & more european eccentric features could only take him so far. Therefore he is very understanding of & sympathetic toward the struggles of “less fortunate”, POC & women alike & he is very anti-racism as well as quite keyed in to classism during his time as he is intimately familiar with these struggles. One of the reasons Alastor was successful on & chosen for Radio was because no one could actually see him, meaning his racial ambiguity was further pronounced & many would assume Alastor was white or by hearing his voice would have no reason to imagine him as anything else. Again, quite comon at the time.
As mentioned in another post, Alastor’s the kind of guy women feel safe around, which has translated to his demon form & life, which probably feels a little odd to start with because most know him as the terrifying radio demon, which there is literal warnings about all over hell, yet he def doesn’t exert any real aura of danger toward female / fem identifying folks, aside from knowing his reputation, they don't feel any reason to be afraid of him, which only gets better with time but none really know how to categorize him. He doesn’t really fit the gay bestie category & he's not exactly a boyfriend, although some of them might want to think that way in the end, no one has ever been able to actually tie him down. ( I have a WHOLE other headcanon about this to post later tbh )
ANOTHER something to add to this is that while Alastor is very anti violence & disrespect toward women he is a mischievous trickster type creature. He will torment women, playfully & he will manipulate them to achieve his own goals (See Charlie & Vaggie, respectfully). He doesn’t mean them real harm, of course. Further, given Alastor lived roughly through the late 1910s & died in the early 30s, yes he does so some things that might be considered a little sexist. He puts women in dresses & he tends to refer to them with lots of pet names “Darling, Dear, Doll, Belle, Sweetheart etc”. He means this in an endearing way & not in a degrading way however, despite the fact it can & probably does come off as such. I’m also not going to say he would correct it immediately if told about it, not because he’s trying to be an ass but more because of habit. Its been noted that Alastor’s a little “stuck” in his ways.
On to the next thing I’m not here to erase peoples sexualities so ofc he's Asexual & grey Aromatic. He can have queer platonic relationships & all but he's not AT ALL interested in sex (he’s kind of touch adverse + a bit sex repulsed, actually) his stance on romance is less repulsed & more just vague disinterest. He’s preferential to women in all ways but I’m not gonna say that's an inflexible preference given his general disinterest either way. On that note, Alastor doesn’t label himself as ace/aro or aspec because he just doesn’t know that exists & even if he did he’d probably reject it. It wasn’t a part of his time & Alastor can be a little bit snooty about things that didn’t exist as he knew them. Again, hes a bit stuck in his ways.
For Alastor himself he describes himself as having other engagements & this might change if he finds the “right” one, but he also takes some type of comfort in the idea in the back of his mind that the ‘right one’ doesn’t / cant exist for him. Though his logic FOR THAT is because he’s a demon & all that kind of stuff has passed him / the others by. He hasn’t had any “real” relationships in his demon life but Alastor does kind of “preform” romance or behave in a way that suggests he's open to it but he never really leaves the ‘courtship’ stage into a real relationship with anyone, which has so far been the case. Strangely enough he does have an ‘ideal’ relationship in his mind but he doesn’t find anyone will ever measure up to it. Its unclear if Alastor is actually open to romance in some way or if this exists for him due to heavy societal pressure (thankfully lessened by hell) & a vague desire to conform. Personally I’m just going to see where / how this develops before I decide which one is most true for Alastor. I know Alastor does at least experience some kind of sensual attraction & behaves as such given, contrary to his own dislike of being touched, he does seem to like to be a bit touchy with others. This is however mostly reserved for people he likes or initiates with.
Other things to note for Alastor is he is indeed very duplicitous as previously mentioned. Despite his well put together & dandy outward demeanour he is actually very feral for lack of a better way to put it. He may dress well & speak / act gentlemanly but this is mostly a façade Alastor puts on as during his time period this behaviour was accorded to the wealthy & the powerful & Alastor was a very fake it till you make it type personality. Indeed, a majority of Alastor’s outward demeanour is fake. Its a show intended to fool others on all levels, again, because Alastor relates speaking, dressing & behaving pleasantly as reflective of high power & status. His near constant smile exists for exactly the same reason. It displays power & dominance to him.
Alastor’s reality is that he is very bloodthirsty, deceitful & violent. His true self is mischievous & he frankly seems to enjoy causing harm as he finds it amusing, though he has fully convinced himself that his victims are completely deserving, which just makes it even more fun to torment them. In complete contrast to Alastor’s polite exterior he is ready & willing to throw down at a moments notice. Related are his yellow teeth, that are like that not for a demonic aesthetic per-se but actually because his oral hygiene sucks, he’s got yellowed teeth & bad breath, another canon fact. He has no problem taring his victims apart & eating them right on the spot. Indeed, Alastor eats mostly meat which he prefers to eat raw, & while Alastor may not have been a “cannibal” in life (I actually think this bit of trivia maaaybe on the debatable side) he’s 100% cannibalistic as a demon.
I have a vague idea of how Alastor’s death went down based on the little trivia notes given, although I don’t think I’m going to follow canon to the letter but we’ll see. Rather, I’m toying with the idea of him being “ hunted ” , perhaps by a mob of townsfolk who suspected him of his crimes, given the other titbit of information about him being a serial killer -- I have vague ideas of him attempting to escape through the wilderness which might have worked out if not for the dogs that tracked him. -- Which could potentially be where his deer-like attributes as a demon stem from, as Alastor wouldn’t have looked like a deer in life (unsure if he had shapeshifting abilities in life, however, I don’t think so, though.).
I’m going for it to be symbolic of the hunter becoming the hunted & more broadly of Alastor’s polite, friendly demeanour in life having hidden the monster he truly was. Also kind of a sick hell-brand irony given Alastor’s favorite meal / meat as a human was ( & still is ) venison.
Aside from this, Alator’s beef with dogs for me stems from them being harder for him to fool. Humans were easy, but dogs always seemed to know exactly what he really was & tended to act frightened / aggressive toward him, meaning they could alert their owners / others to the danger of Alastor, which they otherwise might not have picked up on till it was too late. Its noted he’s not afraid of dogs, he simply dislikes them so this is how I’m thinking I’ll explain that aspect of him as well.
& Heres another messy hc drop of a bunch of thoughts on Alastor added to this post for convivence sake.
Alastor was never really interested in medicine for the purpose of helping people. He might have liked to think that but really Alastor’s interest in medicine was more to fuel his morbid fascination with death & dismemberment, hence his stint as a back ally surgeon. Alastor had genuine talent & he was damn efficient in his work, his skill, precision & overall good rapport made others think Alastor had a lot of care & passion toward helping his patients but rather it was the opposite that gave Alastor a lot of talent in this field. It was his hidden callous disregard for his penitents & this his ability work with very little stress or concern that made Alastor a “skilled surgeon.” This was never an official job of his though. It was something he dabbled in when he was younger, again, more to slate a morbid fasciation than to genuinely help people & to make a quick buck.
Nextly, Alastor doesn't appear on camera + TV. I mean, he does, but he doesn't. He tends to translate in a very distorted manner. If you were to take a picture of Alastor or try to record a video of him he will be a distorted figure, looking like a static glitch as oppose to his “true” self. “”Modern”” technology doesn’t register Alastor. Its another part of his demonic affliction & he does have a lot of resentment for it which, IMO, ties into his dislike of Vox & of modern technology in general.
Alastor has a type of influence over sound however & can essentially manifest / project his voice wherever he wants. His voice is not necessarily attached to him, meaning, he can speak while seemingly not being physically present. Alastor’s voice is a supernatural manifestation & works independently of his body. Though he is used to moving his mouth to speak he doesn’t have to & sometimes his mouth movements can be off in contrast to what he’s saying. Its a very strange & off putting thing to witness.
The little deer hoof prints at the bottom of his “shoes” are the demonic representation of Alastor’s tap dancing skill from his human life. Tap dancers have little metal plates on the soul & heel of their shoes, Alastor’s are simply shaped like the hooves of a deer because Demon Aesthetics really go hard in the hazbin universe. This gives Alastor the ability to tap-dance whenever & otherwise further likens him to a deer as he makes a little tapping sound when he walks, invoking the impression of a deer's hard hooves moving over a solid surface.
Alastor was born in the late 1800s. His popular fan given age is early 30s but I think Alastor was more mid 30s personally, (maybe like 33 or 34) either way, for him to have died in his 30s in 1933 he would have been born in somewhere in the late 1800s, like about 1898 at least, which is actually very important because I’ve seen people say Alastor is from the 30s which isn’t entirely true. The peek of his life would have been the 20s & his most formative years would have been the late 1900s. He died in the early 30s so he only actually experienced 3 years of “the 30s”.
Alastor has a lot of resentment for his death. He was, in my headcanon, essentially lynched. Not only does Alastor not like the manner of his death but doesn’t like the fact that he thinks it was premature, purely for the fact he really had a lot more murders he’d like to have committed ! Which to him meant there was more life he wanted to experience. That being said, Alastor doesn’t dislike his time in Hell. He quite enjoyed it at first. His only problem is that he’s become bored & honestly after decades of balling too hard most of the other demons in hell are deathly afraid of him, going as far as to hang warning about him all over hells streets, which makes entertaining himself hard as very few have the balls to actively engage him.
Alastor’s patron sin, if not obvious, is the sin of Wrath.
Wrath often reveals itself in the wish to seek vengeance In its purest form, wrath presents with injury, violence, and hate that may provoke feuds that can go on for centuries. Wrath may persist long after the person who did another grievous wrong dies. "If anger reaches the point of a deliberate desire to kill or seriously wound a neighbour, it is gravely against charity; it is a mortal sin." Hatred is the sin of desiring that someone else may suffer misfortune or evil and is a mortal sin when one desires grave harm
Alastor’s name translates to avenger / vengeful spirit. Its a name that has been given to spirits, typically of the demonic kind sent to avenge / attack / destroy those who invoke the ire of others after doing them harm. In origin & meaning the name Alastor is considered on par with the Greek Goodness Nemesis, a deity who enacts retribution upon others. This is incredibly on point for Alastor as it was heavily implied if not CONFIRMED that Alastor’s motive as a serial killer was to kill those he deemed wicked / corrupt / villainous toward those he deemed innocent / oppressed.
Again, we’ve seen in canon that Alastor largely considers violence / abuse toward women as a grave misdeed & will actively murder & cannibalise other demons if he catches them participating in harming / assaulting women. There has been lots of other canon indicators that Alastor protects women & has a much better / stronger rapport with them than with men who he conversely doesn’t respect at all.
We’re unsure its only displays of misogyny that set Alastor off or if Alastor in general defends those he views as oppressed / victims. I like to think the latter as tbh Alastor enjoys murdering & if he can find a “good reason” to kill he’s more than happy to indulge himself, its not exclusively restricted to witnessing acts of misogynistic violence or assult.
ALL THIS BEING SAID, Alastor doesn’t view himself as a good person. He’s aware of what sin he repeatedly commits, the sin that got him dammed to hell, he enjoys it & he actively chose it knowing the “ consequences ” it has on his own soul. He’s basically at peace with his actions & doesn’t / never expected NOT to go to hell or to have a ‘lesser’ punishment due to the fact he was technically murdering ‘bad’ people or people who “deserved” it. This is also why he's completely uninterested in redemption because Alastor can’t look at his own actions, feel regret, feel remorse, or promise he has any intentions to never do it again. & this is also why Alastor tends to look so far down his nose at most other sinners.
Lastly I like to think while Alastor was cut down in “his prime”, again, something he resents, he did get a few good murders to his name & some small infamy as a human / in the human world for them (though nothing compared to what he planned or would have wanted). I haven't decided on Alastor’s serial killer moniker yet or too many details other than I think Alastor was a simultaneously calculated & opportunistic killer & was incredibly savage in the sense that he didn’t have one special method of murder & it wasn’t a ‘clean’ thing for him.
He preferred bladed weapons like knives, hatchets, axes & so on in comparison to guns though. Even just a nice blunt object was favoured. Some of Alastor’s killings were more contained / ritualistic, while others were just frenzied & characterised by their extreme violence / gore. As a result while Alastor didn’t have a huge kill count to his name the killings that were attributed to him were ghoulish & inspired much fear & revolution. I also like to think there is some debate as to whether or not Alastor WAS the killer given Alastor’s outward demeanour vs the murders he committed didn’t seem to line up & some like to speculate that well put together gentleman like himself couldn’t have been responsible.

==> Be that dude
Ah yes, there he is. This dude. What a tool.
Your name is AXEL ROSEAH and you HATE that your father named you after some OLD MUSICIAN, mostly because you DON'T LIKE MUSIC. Thankfully, there happens to be a vintage VIDEO GAME CHARACTER who is also named Axel, so you tend to tell people you were named for him instead. This causes NO END OF ANNOYANCE to your FATHER, but you view that as an added bonus. Messing with the GENERAL is somewhat of a hobby after eighteen years.
Speaking of HOBBIES, yours mostly pertain to OUTDATED SHIT. You're a big fan of OLD GAMES and OLDER MEMES, as well as ANCIENT RELIGIONS. Even your Pesterchum handle, anKing, is a reference NOBODY GETS ANYMORE. Aside from your SWEET GAMING RIG, your room is taken up almost entirely by BOOKSHELVES, which are filled with religious and mythological texts. Many of them are ORIGINAL PRINTINGS, thanks to the General's MANY CONNECTIONS, as well as his high-capacity CREDIT CARD, which you swiped a clone of years ago. You even have a page from the GUTENBERG BIBLE that you found at a pawn shop.
Today is a VERY SPECIAL DAY, because one of your girlfriends is TURNING EIGHTEEN, and you got her what you consider to be an AMAZING GIFT. She's absolutely in love with the idea of LARPING, but due to her DISABILITIES, she's never gotten out of the house to actually do it. Before your BACK INJURY, you were a BIG FAN of it yourself, so you're hoping that this NEW GAME lives up to all the hype.
Your rig is, of course, state-of-the-art. You can't stand wetsuits, and shunt tech is still a few years away even within the military, but you found a nice work-around using wired neural feedback patches, colloquially known as an N-Patch. They're basically EKG stickers on crack; they take data from the game and use electrical impulses to manipulate your sensory cortexes into feeling, smelling, and even tasting if you're into that sort of thing (which you totally are). You don't like to think about how much the setup cost, but the General is rich enough that you don't actually give a shit. It pays to have access to a black budget with zero oversight; there's nobody who outranks your father, nor has higher security clearance, so there's really not anyone to oversee the funds. The General doesn't even bother to check the statements on his personal card; it's all handled automatically by his account at the treasury, and he's on duty so often that he wouldn't remember whether or not you'd owned any given thing before he left. Asshole.
Anyways, it's time to get cracking on the birthday gift. You open up your computer, log into Pesterchum, and proceed to have these two conversations that we've seen already.
Sitting alone in your room cackling to yourself over an 80-year-old meme is exactly why people think you're a tool, but man, that was so worth it. You're really glad you programmed that raspberry function into Pesterchum. After a few more moments of laughing alone, and kind of lamenting that you haven't got a salad, you open Pesterchum back up and ping your frenemy.

You don't know which you hate more: the fact that Kite's got a bigger dick than you, or the fact that you know she's got a bigger dick than you. Gods-damned no good razzle-frazzin alcohol. After a few moments of thinking, you settle for hating Kite in general. Yeah, that’ll teach her.
Chac Chel’s spotted ears, you really hope this isn’t turning into some blackrom shit.
Whatever. Time to get this game on lockdown. Grabbing up your VR set, you start sticking N-Patches all over your body, choosing to forgo the one for your tongue this time - you don’t think you’ll need to know what a shale imp tastes like - and boot the initialization file. While it instals, you take some time to flip through The Lesser Key of Solomon. After about an hour, a pop-up asks you to set your fetch modus and arm your strife specibus. Scrolling through the modus options, you eventually land on Ouija, which catches your attention. In the comic, Aradia used it to have the spirits of the damned pick her items for her. You wonder how the game handles it, and there’s only one way to find out, so you select it for now.
Switching over to the strife specibus selector, you’re greeted with a fancy HUD showing various objects in your room with colour-coordinated outlines, highlighting how useful any given thing would be for use as a weapon. Unsurprisingly, your copies of The Key of Solomon and Tripus Aureus are tinted black for “use at own risk”, and a few of your other books are labelled “hazardous”. The only things that are a safe blue are your Swiss army knife (which you mostly use for the nail file) and your cane. Since you’ve actually trained - at the General’s insistence - in hapkido and bartitsu, it’s a pretty clear choice. You pick up your cane, a nice Lebombo piece from the General’s trip to Madagascar, and confirm your selection on the HUD. After a few seconds, a small card appears with the outline of a cane and the label “canekind”, and a stack of five blank squares spread out across the bottom of the display, next to the image of your ouija modus. These must be your captcha cards.
Deciding to give it a whirl before you launch the main client and get into some serious gameplay, you pick up your Swiss army knife and one of the cards glows. The knife disappears from the HUD, and your first blank card flashes with a ghostly image of it before disappearing into the ouija logo. Sure is fancy of them to have the game make it look like the knife has actually been-
Wait a second. You heft your hand, and feel a distinct lack of weight. You close your fingers around the knife you should be holding, and feel nothing but air.
What in the fuck?

General thoughts.
Okay so this is going to be the big official Alastor info post covering portrayal notes and other little bits and pieces about the muse in an effort to give myself and others a reference on how i plan to write him and a little bit of info that i think is important to cover for good faith and transparency reasons. Due to some of the sensitive nature of this post please read on with caution. This post contains mentions of creatures in native Americana folklore and mythology. Out of respect these creatures names will be censored and will be mentioned as little as possible, however I believe it is necessary to cover them in some way as they are canonlogically stated to be sources of heavy inspo for the character which is very obvious to the text. The post also contains mentions of real life bigotry and religion, so please read on with caution !
Lets get the messy stuff out of the way first. I know its been admitted that Alastor takes heavy inpso from W*ndigo but I actually personally think Alastor is infinitely more similar to the slightly less popular mythology of Sk*n W*lk*rs and I am pointing this out souly because of how many similarities there is in Alastor’s design / history and these creatures as opposed to the fandoms silly obsession with him literally being a W*ndigo which he's actually literally not and which is very disrespectful all around so no, I will not be portraying Alastor as actually either of these creatures and anyone in the fandom trying to say this is what he literally is, is factually wrong on multiple levels. He’s a demon. Folks really have no reason not to leave it at that, god.
Anyway, in the same vein I am not Navajo and I don’t want to be disrespectful to Navajo culture so I’ll always do my best to keep things tasteful and vague, which is why I am also censoring the names of both the creatures in question here and this will be the last time I actually mention either of them if I can help it. However, that being said, Sk*n W*lk*rs, or their basic concepts, are not entirely unique to Navajo culture. There are extremely similar beings found in the folklore of various indigenous and even African cultures, which I know because I am both lmao.
So yeah, another inpso stated for the character was Dr. Facilier, and this actually furthers the fact that there is almost infinite similarities between Alastor and Sk*n W*lk*r myths, while the same can’t be said about the W*ndigo. The only similarities Alastor has with W*ndigo are the bastardisations of W*ndigo in popular horror media which came about due to frequently being mixed with and confused with Sk*n W*lk*rs. In fact almost all popular media’s take on W*ndigo’s freaky traits aside from the cannibalism are actually attributed more to Sk*n W*lk*rs and are not traditional to W*ndigo themselves. For example, W*ndigo actually have nothing to do with deer or stags and do not resemble them in any way. These likeness are traced back to a very old movie where inspo for the appearance of the creature was taken from werewolves, but anyway, moving on and back to Dr. Facillier
The other thing I want to mention is that its been made pretty clear that Alastor is, in fact, a “witch doctor” type of character. He is a bokor. He is more so than anything heavily linked to vodou / “voodoo” which is actually another complication with the character as the “voodoo” we see with Alastor is what we call “hollywood voodoo” which is pretty much a racist parody and demonization of voodoo sensationalized by white folks for media. If not obvious the problem here is vodou / voodoo is an African religion. Its an actual legitimate religion and popular portrayals of it being evil, scary dark magic is both totally false and also extremely racist and disrespectful. Vodou / voodoo practitioners are still victims of hate crimes to this very day.
So, again, without trying to be insane and going too far into all the bad parts of all this and being overly critical of everything, I want to state up front that while I cannot remove these things from the character entirely I’ll do my best to handle them in a way that hopes to minimize any offence. To start with I wont be portraying Alastor’s magic as “voodoo” as such. I’ll be placing it down to hoodoo which is more general occult and less associated to the actual religion. That being said given these things will always be related in someway, what does draw from voodoo I will try to handle in a more empowering way as opposed to a demonizing way, although I realize that may seem contradictory when Alastor is a literal demon.
But I feel like I can kinda lessen the negative parts of this with the fact that, imo, Alastor is a poc. For me he is very much mixed race but its not exactly a perfect secret that Alastor’s not white. In my personal headcanon his mother was of African decent and most likely practised voodoo in its true form as a religion, where Alastor learned what he did to use in his own personal way, removed from the actual religion. This makes the most sense to me given voodoo is an exclusive religion and you don’t just sign up and you’re in. Its usually passed down.
I also wanna just share a quote from an anthropologist that studied this stuff named ira lowenthal. This is in regards to the origin of voodoo and its practise among African slaves.
This is kind of where my head is at when I say I come at the strong influence and direct display of voodoo in Alastor’s entire existence with a more empowering approach as opposed to something innately bad / scary / evil. Because I know while Alastor is a demon he is using his powers to navigate hell in a comfortable way, taking down powerful demon overlords as opposed to being downtrodden and treated as a lowly human soul. I think as a poc who lived in the 1910s-1930s Alastor is very used to tackling and navigating oppression and having others think they can push him around as a result, only for him to continually subvert this via his own cunning and merit.
Also to put it out there I made another post wondering if/how this stuff will be addressed in canon ( deleted it I guess, smh ) cause the fact of the matter is Alastor’s “voodoo” is displayed in canon with literal veves ( These are real veves. Some of them are broken or drawn slightly differently to irl but they are the real thing, none of them are fictional or ‘made up’ veves. )
so what Alastor is suppose to be doing when his powers come up is “”voodoo””. As a result Alastor’s powers are, obviously imo, not drawing from hell. They seem to draw from within himself / he's accessing another realm. Which explains a lot about his powers and how powerful he is and was able to become rapidly despite being a “human soul” and the canon having noted the kind of power Alastor was able to wield from day one being unheard of for a human soul. But yeah, not sure how or if this is gonna get addressed but I’ll be interested to see if it does.
So now that thats all out of the way I’m gonna go back over my other more general notes for him. I don’t claim to know all the Alastor trivia or anything so I might be missing some things but its fine, I like to just make stuff up in the meantime so until canon starts giving me some more solid content for Alastor, these are just some thoughts in various states of development:
A lot of this was mentioned on my old multi but I’m gonna use this post cover some stuff I’ve already mentioned, to update some things and to add some new things :
I like to view Alastor in life as having some relationship with medicine but I think the decision I’ve come to is that Alastor was less a legitimate physician and more an unlicensed surgeon. I think Alastor may have perhaps aspired to be more of a real physician but never actually made it to being a legitimate medical practitioner, despite his talent. That being said, it wouldn’t have been unusual to find Alastor preforming “back ally” procedures for the rich and the criminally inclined alike. Alastor was perhaps best described as a jack of all trades, with vaguely con-man tendencies. He knows the hustle. This ability to do a “little bit of everything” meant Alastor would occasionally “preform” in small time theatre. This was actually where he was picked up by a radio station and employed as a host as this was a fairly common occurrence at the time.
As its also been stated that he was a serial killer with a twisted moral code but I’ll touch on this in a little bit. Its been said Alastor is a man of duality and I think him presenting himself as clean cut, well bread radio host by day with some secretive sketchy hobbies that lead to him being a somewhat “” satanic ”” butcher by night as his demeanor fits in well with this theme. Duality is also a common theme in voodoo and the beliefs and spirits therein.
In my mind one of Alastor’s good qualities is that he is fiercely anti-misogyny which brings me to Alastor’s odd moral code. He has a deep seated hatred for men who treat women badly. Despite all the underhanded and bad things Alastor has done and is capable of doing, Alastor was very against abuse toward women. In my portrayal none of Alastor’s victims were / are women, they are all men and violence / disrespect toward women was a big factor in Alastor’s choice of victim. Alastor was noted to have a very close / fond relationship with his mother which is a factor in where his deep respect of women stems from.
In my eyes Alastor’s father was possibly French and white, though I’m not sure if he knew him very well or if he was in Alastor’s life at all. Alastor himself is white passing or ‘racially ambiguous’, something which he was able to use to his advantage in the white man’s world but that being said, given Alastor is not actually white, his fairer skin and more European eccentric features could only take him so far. Therefore he is very understanding of and sympathetic toward the struggles of “less fortunate”, poc and women alike and he is very anti-racism as well as quite keyed in to classism during his time as he is intimately familiar with these struggles. One of the reasons Alastor was successful on and chosen for radio was because no one could actually see him, meaning his racial ambiguity was further pronounced and many would assume Alastor was white or by hearing his voice would have no reason to imagine him as anything else. Again, quite common at the time.
As mentioned in another post, Alastor’s the kind of guy women feel safe around, which has translated to his demon form and life, which probably feels a little odd to start with because most know him as the terrifying radio demon, which there is literal warnings about all over hell, yet he def doesn’t exert any real aura of danger toward female / fem identifying folks, aside from knowing his reputation, they don't feel any reason to be afraid of him, which only gets better with time but none really know how to categorize him. He doesn’t really fit the gay bestie category and he's not exactly a boyfriend, although some of them might want to think that way in the end, no one has ever been able to actually tie him down. ( I have a whole other headcanon about this to post later tbh )
Another something to add to this is that while Alastor is very anti violence and disrespect toward women he is a mischievous trickster type creature. He will torment women, playfully and he will manipulate them to achieve his own goals ( see Charlie and Vaggie, respectfully ). He doesn’t mean them real harm, of course. Further, given Alastor lived roughly through the late 1910s and died in the early 30s, yes he does so some things that might be considered a little sexist. He puts women in dresses and he tends to refer to them with lots of pet names “darling, dear, doll, belle, sweetheart etc”. He means this in an endearing way and not in a degrading way however, despite the fact it can and probably does come off as such. I’m also not going to say he would correct it immediately if told about it, not because he’s trying to be an ass but more because of habit. Its been noted that Alastor’s a little “stuck” in his ways.
On to the next thing I’m not here to erase peoples sexualities so ofc he's asexual and grey aromatic. He can have queer platonic relationships and all but he's not at all interested in sex ( He’s kind of touch adverse + a bit sex repulsed, actually ) his stance on romance is less repulsed and more just vague disinterest. He’s preferential to women in all ways but i’m not gonna say that's an inflexible preference given his general disinterest either way. On that note, Alastor doesn’t label himself as ace/aro or aspec because he just doesn’t know that exists and even if he did he’d probably reject it. It wasn’t a part of his time and Alastor can be a little bit snooty about things that didn’t exist as he knew them. Again, hes a bit stuck in his ways.
For Alastor himself he describes himself as having other engagements and this might change if he finds the “right” one, but he also takes some type of comfort in the idea in the back of his mind that the ‘right one’ doesn’t / cant exist for him. Though his logic for that is because he’s a demon and all that kind of stuff has passed him / the others by.
Its unclear if Alastor is actually open to romance in some way or if this exists for him due to heavy societal pressure ( Thankfully lessened by hell ) and a vague desire to conform. Personally i’m just going to see where / how this develops before i decide which one is most true for alastor. I know Alastor does at least experience some kind of sensual attraction and behaves as such given, contrary to his own dislike of being touched, he does seem to like to be a bit touchy with others. This is however mostly reserved for people he likes or initiates with.
Other things to note for Alastor is he is indeed very duplicitous as previously mentioned. Despite his well put together and dandy outward demeanour he is actually very feral for lack of a better way to put it. He may dress well and speak / act gentlemanly but this is mostly a façade Alastor puts on as during his time period this behaviour was accorded to the wealthy and the powerful and Alastor was a very fake it till you make it type personality. Indeed, a majority of Alastor’s outward demeanour is fake. Its a show intended to fool others on all levels, again, because Alastor relates speaking, dressing and behaving pleasantly as reflective of high power and status. His near constant smile exists for exactly the same reason. It displays power and dominance to him.
Alastor’s reality is that he is very bloodthirsty, deceitful and violent. His true self is mischievous and he frankly seems to enjoy causing harm as he finds it amusing, though he has fully convinced himself that his victims are completely deserving, which just makes it even more fun to torment them. In complete contrast to Alastor’s polite exterior he is ready and willing to throw down at a moments notice. Related are his yellow teeth, that are like that not for a demonic aesthetic per-se but actually because his oral hygiene sucks, he’s got yellowed teeth and bad breath, another canon fact. He has no problem taring his victims apart and eating them right on the spot. Indeed, Alastor eats mostly meat which he prefers to eat raw, and while Alastor may not have been a “cannibal” in life ( I actually think this bit of trivia maaaybe on the debatable side ) he’s 100% cannibalistic as a demon.
-- which could potentially be where his deer-like attributes as a demon stem from, as Alastor wouldn’t have looked like a deer in life ( unsure if he had shapeshifting abilities in life, however, i don’t think so, though.).
I’m going for it to be symbolic of the hunter becoming the hunted and more broadly of Alastor’s polite, friendly demeanour in life having hidden the monster he truly was. Also kind of a sick hell-brand irony given Alastor’s favorite meal / meat as a human was ( and still is ) venison.
Aside from this, alator’s beef with dogs for me stems from them being harder for him to fool. Humans were easy, but dogs always seemed to know exactly what he really was and tended to act frightened / aggressive toward him, meaning they could alert their owners / others to the danger of alastor, which they otherwise might not have picked up on till it was too late. Its noted he’s not afraid of dogs, he simply dislikes them so this is how i’m thinking i’ll explain that aspect of him as well.
And heres another messy hc drop of a bunch of thoughts on Alastor added to this post for convivence sake.
Alastor was never really interested in medicine for the purpose of helping people. He might have liked to think that but really Alastor’s interest in medicine was more to fuel his morbid fascination with death and dismemberment, hence his stint as a back ally surgeon. Alastor had genuine talent and he was damn efficient in his work, his skill, precision and overall good rapport made others think Alastor had a lot of care and passion toward helping his patients but rather it was the opposite that gave Alastor a lot of talent in this field. It was his hidden callous disregard for his penitents and this his ability work with very little stress or concern that made Alastor a “skilled surgeon.” this was never an official job of his though. It was something he dabbled in when he was younger, again, more to slate a morbid fasciation than to genuinely help people and to make a quick buck.
Its another part of his demonic affliction and he does have a lot of resentment for it which, imo, ties into his dislike of Vox and of modern technology in general.
Alastor has a type of influence over sound however and can essentially manifest / project his voice wherever he wants. His voice is not necessarily attached to him, meaning, he can speak while seemingly not being physically present. Alastor’s voice is a supernatural manifestation and works independently of his body. Though he is used to moving his mouth to speak he doesn’t have to and sometimes his mouth movements can be off in contrast to what he’s saying. Its a very strange and off putting thing to witness.
The little deer hoof prints at the bottom of his “shoes” are the demonic representation of Alastor’s tap dancing skill from his human life. Tap dancers have little metal plates on the soul and heel of their shoes, Alastor’s are simply shaped like the hooves of a deer because demon aesthetics really go hard in the hazbin universe. This gives Alastor the ability to tap-dance whenever and otherwise further likens him to a deer as he makes a little tapping sound when he walks, invoking the impression of a deer's hard hooves moving over a solid surface.
Alastor was born in the late 1800s. His popular fan given age is early 30s but i think Alastor was more mid 30s personally, ( maybe like 33 or 34 ) either way, for him to have died in his 30s in 1933 he would have been born in somewhere in the late 1800s, like about 1898 at least, which is actually very important because i’ve seen people say Alastor is from the 30s which isn’t entirely true. The peek of his life would have been the 20s and his most formative years would have been the late 1900s.
His only problem is that he’s become bored and honestly after decades of balling too hard most of the other demons in hell are deathly afraid of him, going as far as to hang warning about him all over hells streets, which makes entertaining himself hard as very few have the balls to actively engage him.
In origin and meaning the name Alastor is considered on par with the greek goodness nemesis, a deity who enacts retribution upon others. This is incredibly on point for Alastor as it was heavily implied if not confirmed that Alastor’s motive as a serial killer was to kill those he deemed wicked / corrupt / villainous toward those he deemed innocent / oppressed.
Again, we’ve seen in canon that Alastor largely considers violence / abuse toward women as a grave misdeed and will actively murder and cannibalise other demons if he catches them participating in harming / assaulting women. There has been lots of other canon indicators that Alastor protects women and has a much better / stronger rapport with them than with men who he conversely doesn’t respect at all.
We’re unsure its only displays of misogyny that set Alastor off or if Alastor in general defends those he views as oppressed / victims. I like to think the latter as tbh Alastor enjoys murdering and if he can find a “good reason” to kill he’s more than happy to indulge himself, its not exclusively restricted to witnessing acts of misogynistic violence or assult.
All this being said, Alastor doesn’t view himself as a good person. He’s aware of what sin he repeatedly commits, the sin that got him dammed to hell, he enjoys it and he actively chose it knowing the “ consequences ” it has on his own soul. He’s basically at peace with his actions and doesn’t / never expected not to go to hell or to have a ‘lesser’ punishment due to the fact he was technically murdering ‘bad’ people or people who “deserved” it. This is also why he's completely uninterested in redemption because Alastor can’t look at his own actions, feel regret, feel remorse, or promise he has any intentions to never do it again. And this is also why Alastor tends to look so far down his nose at most other sinners.
Lastly i like to think while Alastor was cut down in “his prime”, again, something he resents, he did get a few good murders to his name and some small infamy as a human / in the human world for them (though nothing compared to what he planned or would have wanted). I haven't decided on Alastor’s serial killer moniker yet or too many details other than i think Alastor was a simultaneously calculated and opportunistic killer and was incredibly savage in the sense that he didn’t have one special method of murder and it wasn’t a ‘clean’ thing for him.
He preferred bladed weapons like knives, hatchets, axes and so on in comparison to guns though. Even just a nice blunt object was favored. Some of Alastor’s killings were more contained / ritualistic, while others were just frenzied and characterized by their extreme violence / gore. As a result while Alastor didn’t have a huge kill count to his name the killings that were attributed to him were ghoulish and inspired much fear and revolution. I also like to think there is some debate as to whether or not Alastor was the killer given Alastor’s outward demeanor vs the murders he committed didn’t seem to line up and some like to speculate that well put together gentleman like himself couldn’t have been responsible.

Names That Mean Greed: The Origins and Meanings Behind Them – Impeccable Nest
Greed is considered one of the seven deadly sins and has been a recurring theme throughout history and mythology. Some names directly translate to greed or have meanings related to covetousness and accumulation of wealth. Here are a few names that mean greed:
Mammon - One of the earliest biblical references to greed, mammon is commonly used to denote wealth, money, or material riches. In the New Testament, Jesus warns his followers that they cannot serve both God and mammon. As a name, Mammon directly references the personification of riches and greed.
Midas - Inspired by the mythological King Midas, who was granted a wish by Dionysus that everything he touched would turn to gold. Overcome by greed, Midas realized too late that his ability more destroyed than enriched his life. Now Midas is used to describe someone obsessed with wealth accumulation to the point of being considered “greed personified.”
Avaritia - The Latin word for greed, avarice or

On fae/faer pronouns and cultural appropriation
HOW IT STARTED
I had a handful, a very small handful but more than two, responses in the Gender Census feedback box telling me that fae/faer pronouns are appropriative. The reasons didn’t always agree, and the culture that was being appropriated wasn’t always the same, but here’s a selection of quotes:
“Fae pronouns are cultural appropriation and are harmful to use“ - UK, age 11-15
“I’m not a person who practices pagan holidays but, my understanding is that pronouns like fae/faeself are harmful because the fae are real to pagans and is like using Jesus/jesuself as pronouns“ - UK, age 11-15
“I know you've probably heard this a million times, so has everyone on the internet, but the ''mere existence''of the fae pronoun feels really uncomfortable for some of us. I'm personally not against neopronouns like xe/xim, er/em and the like, I am a pagan but apart from the, imo most important, reasoning of that pronoun being immensely disrespectful, I worry as an nb about people who banalize the usage of pronouns ''for fun'', and I'm quoting what some people have told me.“ - Spain, 16-20
“I don't agree with fae/deity pronouns just from a pagan perspective it's very disrespectful to the cultures they come from. Like Fae are a legit thing in many cultures and they hate with a fiery passion mortal humans calling themselves Fae to the point of harming/cursing the people who do it“ - USA, age 16-20
“only celtic people can use far/ faers otherwise it’s cultural appropriation, many celts have said this and told me this“ - USA, age 16-20
So that’s:
❓ Someone who doesn’t say whether they’re pagan or Celtic.
❌ Someone who definitely isn’t pagan.
✅ Someone who is pagan.
❓ Someone who doesn’t say whether they’re pagan or Celtic.
❓ Someone who doesn’t say whether they’re pagan or Celtic.
So, just to disclose some bias up-front, I am English so I’m not Celtic, but I do live in Wales so I am surrounded by Celts. The bit of Wales that I live in is so beautiful in such a way that when my French friend came to visit me she described it as féerique - like an enchanting, magical land, literally “fairylike” or thereabouts. Coincidentally I have also considered myself mostly pagan for over half of my life, and I can’t definitively claim whether or not the Fae are “part of paganism” because paganism is so diverse and pick’n’mix that it just doesn’t work that way.
To me the idea that fae/faer pronouns would be offensive or culturally appropriative sounds absurd. But also, I am powered by curiosity, and have been wrong enough times in my life that I wanted to approach this in a neutral way with an open mind. Perhaps what I find out can be helpful to some people.
So since we only have information from one person who is definitely directly affected by any cultural appropriation that may be happening, the first thing I wanted to do was get some information from ideally a large number of people who are in the cultures being appropriated, and see what they think.
~
WHAT I DID
First of all I put some polls up on Twitter and Mastodon. [Edit: Note that this post has been updated with results from closed polls.]
I specified that I wanted to hear from nonbinary Celts and pagans, just so that the voters would be familiar with fae/faer pronouns. I asked the questions in a neutral way, i.e. “How do you feel about...” with “good/neutral/bad” answer options, instead of something more leading like “Is this a load of rubbish?” or “are you super offended?” with “yes/no” options. I provided a “see results” option, so that the poll results wouldn’t be skewed as much by random people clicking any old answer to see the results. And I invited voters to express their opinions in replies.
Question #1: Nonbinary people of Celtic descent (Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man, and Brittany), how do you feel about non-Celtic people using the neopronoun set fae/faer? [ It's good / No strong feelings/other / It's bad ]
Question #2: Nonbinary pagans, how do you feel about non-pagans using the neopronoun set fae/faer? [ It's good / No strong feelings/other / It's bad ]
The Twitter polls got over 1,100 responses each, and the Mastodon polls got over 140 responses each. With a little bit of spreadsheetery I removed the “N/A” responses to reverse engineer the number of people voting for each option, combined those numbers, and recalculated percentages.
Obviously this approach is not in the least scientific, but thankfully the results were unambiguous enough and the samples were big enough that I feel comfortable drawing conclusions.
Celts on fae/faer pronouns being used by non-Celts (561 voters):
It's good - 42.5%
No strong feelings/other - 44.0%
It's bad - 13.5%
Pagans on fae/faer pronouns being used by non-pagans (468 voters):
It's good - 47.2%
No strong feelings/other - 39.5%
It's bad - 13.3%
Here’s how that looks as a graph:
The limitations of polls on these platforms means that we have no way to distinguish between people who have more complicated views (”other”) and people who have “no strong feelings”, so we can’t really draw conclusions there. If we stick to just the pure positive and pure negative:
Celts were over three times as likely to feel positive about non-Celts using fae/faer pronouns than they were to feel negative.
Pagans were over three and a half times as likely to feel positive about non-pagans using fae/faer pronouns than they were to feel negative.
So Celts and pagans are way more likely to feel actively good about someone’s fae/faer pronouns, even when that person is not a Celt/pagan. That’s some strong evidence against the idea that fae/faer pronouns are appropriative, right there.
~
CORRECTIONS
To be clear, I haven’t done any research about the roots of fae/faer or the origins of the Fae and related beings, but my goal here was to get a sense of what Celts and pagans think and feel, rather than what an historian or anthropologist would say.
On the anti side, here were the replies that suggested fae/faer either is or might be inappropriate:
“I only worry that not everyone understands the origin of the word outside of modernized ideas of fairies.“ - pagan
“As a vaguely spiritual Whatever (Ireland), I think a mortal using "fae" as a pronoun/to refer to themselves is asking for a malicious and inventive fairy curse (on them, their families and possibly anyone in their vicinity, going by the traditions). I have not heard of this term before, so this is an immediate reaction from no background bar my cultural knowledge of sidhe/fae/term as culturally appropriate. My general approach is people can identify themselves as they want.“ - Celtic
So we’ve got a pagan who’s wary that people who use fae/faer (and people in general) might not have a fully fleshed out idea of the Fae. And we’ve got a Celt who doesn’t mind people using fae/faer personally, but based on what they know of the Fae they wouldn’t be surprised if the Fae got mad about it. No outright opposition, but a little concern.
There were not a lot of replies on the pro side, but not because people weren’t into it, judging by the votes. There were a lot of “it’s more complicated than that” replies, many of which repeated others, so quotes won’t really work. Here’s a summary of the Celtic bits:
“Fae” is not a Celtic word, and Celts don’t use it. It is French, or Anglo-French.
“Fae” can refer to any number of stories/legends from a wide variety of cultures in Europe, not one cohesive concept.
There are many legends about fairy-like beings in Celtic mythologies, and there are many, many different names for them.
The Celts are not a monolith, they’re a broad selection of cultures with various languages and various mythologies.
And the pagan bits:
Paganism is not closed or exclusive in any way. It might actually be more open than anything else, as “pagan” is a sort of umbrella term for non-mainstream religions in some contexts. A closed culture would be a prerequisite for something to be considered “appropriated” from paganism.
From my own experience, pagans may or may not believe in the Fae, and within that group believers may or may not consider the Fae to be sacred and/or worthy of great respect. (I’ve certainly never met a pagan who worshipped the Fae, though I don’t doubt that some do.)
And then we get into the accusations. 🍿
“this issue wasn’t started by Celtic groups or by people who know much about Celtic fae. It was started primarily by anti-neopronoun exclusionist pagans on TikTok.“
“[I’m] literally Scottish [...] and it’s not appropriative in the least and honestly to suggest as such is massively invalidating towards actual acts of cultural appropriation and is therefore racist. Feel like if this was actually brought up it was either by some people who seriously got their wires crossed or people who are just concern trolling and trying to make fun of both neo-pronouns and of the concept of cultural appropriation and stir the pot in the process.“
“It wouldn't be the first time bigots falsly claim “it's appropriative from X marginalized group" to harass people they don't like, like they did with aspec people when they claimed "aspec" was stolen from autistic language (which was false, as many autistics said)“
“It's been a discussion in pagan circles recently ... People were very quick to use the discussion as an excuse to shit on nonbinary people.“
“I think it would be apropos to note that the word "faerie/fairy" has been a synonym for various queer identities for decades, too. The Radical Faeries are a good example.“ (So if anyone has the right to [re]claim it...)
A little healthy skepticism is often wise in online LGBTQ+ “discourse”, and some of these people are making some very strong claims, for which I’d love to see some evidence/sources/context. Some of it certainly sounds plausible.
~
HOW DID IT START?
I had a look on Twitter and the earliest claim I can find that fae/faer pronouns are cultural appropriation is from 18th February 2020, almost exactly one year ago today. Again, tweets are not the best medium for this, there was very little in the way of nuance or context. If anyone can find an older claim from Twitter or Tumblr or anywhere else online, please do send it my way.
I have no idea how to navigate TikTok because I’m a nonbinosaur. (I’m 34.) I did find some videos of teens and young adults apparently earnestly asserting that they were Celtic or pagan and the use of fae/faer pronouns was offensive, but the videos were very brief and provided nothing in the way of nuance or context. For example:
This one from October 2020 with 29k ❤️s, by someone who I assume is USian based on the word “mom”?
This one from December 2020, that says “I am pagan and i find it rather disrespectful. It’s like using god/godr or jesus/jesusr.” That’s probably what inspired the feedback box comment above that refers to hypothetical jesus/jesusr pronouns.
If anyone is able to find a particularly old or influential TikTok video about fae/faer pronouns being appropriative I’d really appreciate it, especially if it’s from a different age group or from not-the-USA, to give us a feel for how universal this is.
For context, fae pronouns were mentioned in the very first Gender Census back in May 2013, though you’ll have to take my word for it as the individual responses are not currently public. The word “fae” was mentioned in the pronoun question’s “other” textbox, and no other forms in the set were entered so we have no way of knowing for sure what that person’s full pronoun set actually is. This means the set may have been around for longer. The Nonbinary Wiki says that the pronoun set was created in October 2013, as “fae/vaer”, later than the first entry in the Gender Census, so I’ll be editing that wiki page later! If anyone has any examples of fae/faer pronouns in use before 2013 I would also be very interested to see that.
~
IN SUMMARY
Obviously I can’t speak for everyone, as the Twitter polls are not super scientific and they only surveyed a selection of Celts and pagans within a few degrees of separation of the Gender Census Twitter and Mastodon accounts, but I can certainly report on what I found.
For a more conclusive result, we’d need to take into account various demographics such as age, culture, location, religion, race/heritage, etc.
As far as I can tell based on fairly small samples of over 400 people per group, a minority of about 13% of Celtic and/or pagan people felt that use of fae/faer pronouns is appropriative.
A much higher number of people per group felt positive about people who are not Celts or pagans using fae/faer pronouns. The predominant view was:
It can’t be cultural appropriation from Celtic cultures because fairy-like beings are not unique to Celtic cultures and Celtic cultures don’t call them Fae.
It can’t be cultural appropriation from pagan cultures because paganism is not “closed” or exclusive in any way, it’s too broad and open.
~
If your experience of your gender(s) or lack thereof isn’t described or encompassed by the gender binary of “male OR female”, please do click here to take the Gender Census 2021 - it’s international and it closes no earlier than 10th March 2021!

hiii, your last lineless piece was absolutely beautiful, i wonder if you could explain it a little to me to get a jumping off point for my own research? im curious to know how much of it was picked for the aesthetics and how much of it comes from the concepts you wrote out
i know samsāra is the concept of like.... circular karma present in Buddhism and other religions but i dont understand why the animals in the pieces are there or what they represent. i can see swk, liu er and ma's names/titles written out but the other concepts written are a mystery to me, i tried to look them up but i dont think im putting in the right thing
i know its probably spoons to explain the whole thing so if you dont wanna maybe you could link me a site you used or something ^^ thank you so much, an thanks for posting amazing art ♡♡
jgklsjgkdsmk thank you!!! And of course I can, though u’ll be prolly a bit disappointed to know that the whole piece set is just built upon a crossover between LMK and a game more than something from the actual eastern religions
The animals in the piece are slugcats from the game Rain World, just as well those glowing symbols/signs/characters on the pictures. The “names” of the slugcats (幸存者,僧,猎人) mean the same things as the symbols 👇
(I fucked up the hunter symbol but there’s very little of RW fans so I hope nobody of our little numbers will come to catch my ass for it)
(side note that those smaller symbols along the middle of SWK’s body are chakras n they r very much real. There’s 7 of em usually, but cuz this is Fruit Twins Lore only the first four are drawn. All my understanding of chakras comes from my real life since I Ain’t Christian)
Rain World was my hyperfixation at the start of last year, it’s built around the idea of Saṃsāra and Nirvana, I made the connection between LMK n RW thru the “oh hey, same social circle of religions!”, the slugcats and their titles fit the three main monkey siblings (SWK being an actual monk + vegetarianism cuz of the monking; one of Ma’s themes as a character is surviving like a roach + both her and Survivor lose parents as kids and have to fend for themselves + become strong and kinda ruthless because of their time alone; Six Ear making it an Actual Point to eat more meat than veggies just to spite religions n SWK + excessive killing + fucked karma situation/being revived after dying just like Hunter) n so I went FUCK YEA cuz I’mma slut for parallels
But when it comes to actual research on these kinds of things: the only consistent sources I have is Wikipedia and/or Quora (the most reliant information you’ll Ever get is from the people of the actual culture). otherwise I tend to jump around multiple sites, perhaps my two books of mythology and then cross-reference everything I’ve learned to filter out what I’m CERTAIN is a real thing and what isn’t. General knowledge of the language and culture itself also helps. Look up what certain characters mean more abroadly cuz gtranslate won’t give you the Whole context n check for the context not being explained in too simple western terms. A site that isn’t common enough in my research sprees to call it “consistent” but shows up a lot anyway is journeytothewestresearch. I usually use that one as a final foolproofer or last life line if I can’t find a thing otherwise

Gideon the Ninth Names
Quick n’ spoiler-free name analysis for prominent players in GtN.
Thank you to @swordrogue for inspiring me to type and format my scribbled notes, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing the next parts of your (deliciously not spoiler-free!) House-founder name series, and also @eschatolegation for connecting the dots on Ninth House lineages.
2nd House
Judith: In Jewish apocrypha, Judith was a beautiful woman who feigned escape from a besieged city, sweet-talked the attacking general until invited into his private tent, and cut off his head while he was asleep. Deuteros: “second” (Greek)
Marta: “dedicated to the god of war” (Latin) In Christian theology, Marta witnessed her brother Lazarus raised from the dead by Jesus. Dyas: “di-” means “two” (Greek) and “-as” means “having a quality of something” (Latin)
3rd House
Coronabeth: A corona is the dim outer atmosphere of a star. The sun’s corona can’t be seen with the naked eye until a solar eclipse where it appears as a halo. Beth is Hebrew for “house, place,” and as a suffix, it means “in, at, or with”. Tridentarius: “tri-” means “three” (Greek), a trident is a three-pronged spear, and “Arius” is a Greek name meaning “immortal”.
Ianthe: This name is attributed to three different women in Greek mythology. In one story, she was so beautiful that the gods made purple flowers grow around her grave. Tridentarius: (see above)
Naberius: Described by a late-1500’s occultist as a demon especially skilled at the art of persuasion who can take the form of a three-headed dog. Tern: “triple,” and can refer to a favorable combination of three numbers resulting in a lottery prize
4th House
Isaac: The historical figure Isaac was the son of Abraham (i.e. the “Abrahamic” religions Judaism, Islam, and Christianity). God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac on an altar, but tells him to stop at the very last minute and kill a ram instead. Tettares: “four” (tetra-, Greek)
Jeannemary: “favored by God” paired with “sea of bitterness” (Hebrew to French) Chatur: “clever, intelligent” (French)
5th House
Abigail: The historical figure Abigail was a powerhouse, described as “intelligent and attractive” in the Torah. Long story, but TLDR: Her cunning, boldness, and political tactfulness saved the lives of hundreds. Pent: “five” (Greek)
Magnus: “great” (Latin) This name originated in Rome as a nickname title (i.e. ____ the Great) and became popular in the Middle Ages with Scandinavian royalty/nobility as a forename. Quinn: “fifth-born” (Greek) “wisdom, intelligence, counsel” (Irish/Gaelic)
6th House
Palamedes: A character included in several accounts of the Trojan War, said to be a genius and the inventor of parts of the Greek alphabet as well as dice. Palamedes is also the name of a Round Table knight in Arthurian legends, the son of King Esclabor. Sextus: “sixth born” (Latin)
Camilla: “helper to the priest” (Latin) “whole, complete, flawless, perfect” (Arabic) Also, a warrior-maiden attendant of the Roman goddess Diana (AKA the Greek goddess Artemis). Hect: “one hundred” (Latin)
7th House
Dulcinea: In the novel Don Quixote, the impractically romantic protagonist imagines a peasant to be a fine lady called Dulcinea. Based on the Spanish word “dulce” for “sweet”. Septimus: “seventh-born” (Latin) Also, play on words for “sepsis,” a life-threatening complication of infection.
Protesilaus: At the start of the Trojan War, a prophecy said the first attacker to set foot upon the shores of Troy would die, and Protesilaus was the first to leave his ship. Ebdoma: Alternative form of the Greek “hebdomas” meaning the number seven.
8th House
Silas: “prayed for” or “the youngest” (Hebrew) The historical figure of Silas was a Jewish convert to Christianity and missionary around 49-52 AD. Oktakiseron: In meteorology, an “okta” is a measurement for describing the amount of cloud coverage - possibly a reference to their House colors. It’s from the Greek/Latin root word “octa-“ for eight.
Colum: “dove” (Irish from Latin) The historical figure Columba was an Irish missionary and Catholic saint. Asht: “host” (Albanian from the root for “bone/relic”) Tamsyn Muir also referenced Ash Katchem from Pokemon in her pronunciation guide, which could be a hilarious reference to “Gotcha catch ‘em all!”
9th House
Harrowhark: In Christian theology, Jesus descends into the realm of the dead before his resurrection, an event referred to as the Harrowing of Hell. (The word “harrow” refers to breaking up the earth in a field before sowing seed.) The word “hark” means “listen and pay close attention”. Nonagesimus: “nineteenth” (Latin) Canonically, this is also a variant of Ninth House family names that trace back to their very first necromancer.
Gideon: “great warrior” (Hebrew) The historical figure Gideon destroyed their family’s idols to false gods and was later the leader of vastly outnumbered Israelites victoriously battling against their oppressors. Nav: “corpse” (Proto-Slavic) Canonically, this is also a variant of Ninth House family names that trace back to their very first cavalier.
