Documenting my chaotic approach to essay writing
This is based on a paper I'm writing right now so it'll be kind of specific to that but I'll generalize sometimes. Also, if you find something helpful in this, that's great but I don't think my way is any better than anyone else.
With that out of the way, here we go.
First i read the prompt. That way I gather what kind of topics I can explore and the depth and breadth that I can reach within the word count.
My paper can only be 1200-1600 words long, which means I'll have to be very selective about what I choose to quote for evidence
Then I choose my topic and write a one line incomplete thesis. This serves as my touchstone for what my evidence should look to support.
For this paper, it's "How the hetero patriarchy traps Janie in Their Eyes Were Watching God"
Next I pull quotes from the primary text all the while citing each thing properly so I don't have to go back and find things.
Then I look for secondary texts like biographies or critical scholarship to supplement my paper and challenge my thinking
That's the step I'm on now so I'll return when I've moved on

hello all!! hope you’re doing well. i’m really interested in exploring the realm of digital notes in what used to be a physical space - the study community. as a primarily digital note taker who used to be a fiercely paper based note taker, it’s been a really interesting transition to experience as i come of age.
and so, coming soon is a post on the realm of electronic notes in what was originally a paper study world.
as i start the post, lemme know what y’all think - paper notes or electronic notes as king?
pictured: my reading notes on langston hughes’ short story ‘cora unashamed’ alongside the reading, which i read off my laptop. the text of the notes is in green because that was hughes’ favorite color to write in! in the background of the photo is my lovely girlfriend @mypencilshavings, who is a new force in the studyblr community and absolutely killing it!! check her out at your leisure. she’s studying biology of women in this pic :)

So far I have completed 4 assignments and I'm officially done with 2/6 of my classes. I have 36-39 more pages of writing to get done before Friday, so wish me luck!
(Also I erased the pencil too soon and the black smudged :( )

Zoomester Studyblr Challenge Day 23
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 23 - What’s some random miscellaneous piece of information that you just happen to know?
Ummm. This is so hard. I feel like I have so many weird tidbits in my head. Maybe the fact that there's this story of Ernest Hemingway having sex with his wife and then pulling out a book to read while they do it.

I had an awful day. My group presentation about colorism was undermined by my professor and some of my classmates. I cried about it and skipped french class. I watched The Nanny and bought some bubble and milk tea to try for the first time. That cheered me up

I oscillate between dark academia and like pastel fairycore. This is for my clothes! So like sometimes I'm Marceline and sometimes I'm Princess Bubblegum.

So life update: I've been taking a brain rest and boycotting thinking longer than it takes to write a tweet because this past semester took a lot out of me. Also my laptop has been on the fritz and I want a new one but I can't afford that right now so I have to get my old one fixed. I've been working on a comprehensive gay ranking of dreamworks animation films. And now I'm doing a video on animated bands when my brain can't keep watching movies. I start the summer program for my fellowship on June 1 but they haven't paid me yet so I have to contact the director. Anyway, that's what I've been up to. Hopefully I'll be able to make more content soon

Obviously this situation is very stressful and, if you have the privilege of social distancing in a safe home, the days can slide into one another in joyless monotony. Here are my tips for spicing up your days and finding out a way to protect your mental health during this quarantine.
Basic Day Structure
Experiment with how your days will work for you. Without the need to get up and go out into the world, there’s also no need to subscribe to conventional wisdom about time. It’s made up anyway! I tend to get in a groove with my work really late at night, so I stay up until around 3 am and sleep until my first zoom class at 9am or 11am and just take as many naps as possible. Point is: don’t force yourself to follow your normal sleep schedule if it’s just making you miserable. If you can still go to bed at 10 and be up by 8, good for you.
Keeping Busy
There’s a lot of free time now and if you’re the type of person that needs to stay busy to cope, here’s a list of things to do.
Write letters to your friends and/or family
Research a topic you’ve always been interested in (I’ve been using Academia.edu. but you can always use google or see if your local library has online resources to use)
Try to get better at a task (mine is eyeshadow)
Read
Watch Netflix and write reviews for the films or shows
Learn dances (whether they be TikTok or K-Pop, learning these dances could be great exercise)
Learn a new language or better your skills in one (Duolingo, Memrise, watch movies in your target language)
Make your notes pretty (I find making my studyblr content very therapeutic because it’s busy work that is actually helping me academically)
Apply to scholarships (this is for current students: don’t let the pandemic make you forget about that real need for money. If you have the resources to still apply, make sure you try to get that money especially if social distancing is making you or your family miss paychecks)
Pick a random YouTube tutorial to try
Get a fun subscription box (my girlfriend and I do Hunt a Killer, which is this really fun subscription box that gives you monthly clues to solve a murder)
Make a body journal (you can take this time to really get in tune with your body. really examine it and try to understand what it needs to feel good and what you should avoid to prevent feeling bad)
Interview your family members (odds are, everyone is feeling lonely in their house and they’d be delighted to answer any and all questions. plus you can learn some family tea!
Read manga or webcomics
Marie Kondo your house
Write! Poetry, personal essays, books, anything!
Self-Care
Maybe productivity and business makes you feel overwhelmed, here are some things you can do to check in.
Just lay down. Don’t be afraid to just be prone for a while and not respond to anyone but your breathing. Resting is just as productive as working.
Get a water tracking app (I have Drink Water). Being hydrated will make you feel better, so having a cute little app to remind you just gives you incentive to take care of yourself.
Wash your face. You don’t have to get all glam for the living room, but being clean will make you feel better
Journal. Process your feelings.
If you feel sad, let yourself feel it. Usually, we say that we don’t have the luxury for sadness and brush it off for a later date that never comes. Let your feelings come and be present.
Be active. I don’t care if you do one jumping jack or just walk from your bed to your fridge. Make sure you let your body move.
Get dressed up. Sometimes it feels good to wear cute clothes and make up. Wear an outfit that makes you feel good and take pictures. Do a fashion show in your living room. Feel your quarantine fantasy, sis.
Above all, I want to say that my biggest tip is to do whatever will cause the least harm to yourself. This situation is very strange and upsetting, so find coping mechanisms that aren’t harmful to yourself or others and do that. Let me know if there was anything I missed! Stay safe and find peace.

Day 30 - What’s the best advice someone has given you?
Your worth is not tied to your productivity. Rest.
Speaking of which, I get a teeny tiny spring break until monday so I'm going to write letters to my loved ones today.
