In my last years of high school, I quietly gave up. There were many different circumstances that led to that, but what it came down to was an understanding that I was different, that my difference wasn’t doing me any favours and in order to survive, it would be best to blend in. So I leaned into what I was “supposed to” do. The idea was that if I was ticking all of the boxes, giving the appearance of following the prescribed path, no one could fault me - even if, in other ways, I still failed to conform. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. I graduated top of my class but was removed from the valedictorian race because the school principle worried about what I might say - worried, I think, that I might tell the truth about what high school is like for so many people on a day we were meant to celebrate those whose life peaked in that four-year period (and perhaps, also, the fact that the rest of us made it through.) at least I still had books.
