So there I was, questioning everything, doing a job I felt entirely unprepared for and incapable of… and here I am, still doing it, but with far more responsibilities. What changed? The simple answer is, I did. But it wasn’t just a matter of waking up one morning and deciding to change. I had to take a long look at why I was struggling - and figure out which parts of the situation I had control over, so I could do the work to fix them. And then there was the doing the work part, which wasn’t any easier. It’s still ongoing, in fact. I had to force myself to set boundaries and advocate for myself in scenarios where it felt deeply uncomfortable (and wasn’t always well received.) I was forced to let go of things I couldn’t control. And I needed to stop beating myself up for being imperfect. Accepting that good enough is good enough has been a bumpy ride, but I’m here. Yesterday, I booked a flight to London on a whim. I work very, very hard, not just in my professional life but outside of it, to be the best version of myself every single day. You don’t grow when you’re comfortable there’s been so much discomfort this year but incredible growth, too. London will be a reward for that, in some ways, but it’s also just a reflection of the life I’ve chosen for myself and my decision to fully embrace it, whatever that may mean and no matter who it might offend. This is my one chance at life. In my last years of high school, I quietly gave up. There were many different circumstances that led to that, but what it came down to was an understanding that I was different, that my difference wasn’t doing me any favours and in order to survive, it would be best to blend in. So I leaned into what I was “supposed to” do. The idea was that if I was ticking all of the boxes, giving the appearance of following the prescribed path, no one could fault me - even if, in other ways, I still failed to conform. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. I graduated top of my class but was removed from the valedictorian race because the school principle worried about what I might say - worried, I think, that I might tell the truth about what high school is like for so many people on a day we were meant to celebrate those whose life peaked in that four-year period (and perhaps, also, the fact that the rest of us made it through.) at least I still had books.
