Listen, there is a place of nuance between "the past was terrible. I have it so much better than a mideval peasant girl who was married at 13 and had 10 kids and wore nothing but grey"/"corsets were torture devices and having a thought got women diagnosed with hysteria" and the inverse of "The past was amazing. I wish I lived in pre-capitalist society where I didn't have to work so hard."/"no one was oppressed by corsets and the lives of women were better than now"
And ideally that place of nuance is where you should try to be when thinking about the past. A lot of people led what they would see as ordinary lives which were not markedly better or worse than average experience in a different century, just different.

ok so my theory as to why guillermo isn’t turning is because of his van helsing vamp-killer blood. his body is physically fighting back against the vampification process bcs it’s part of his genetics to kill vampires

i think realistically I am a lesbian, but if I start saying that, people will be weird when I say men are hot and then i’d have to give a whole dissertation on the nuances of sexuality and attraction and like uuugggghhhhh that’s just not worth it so it’s just easier to say I’m bi to anyone who isn’t like. my close personal friend yk

This is one of my favorite stories in the Bible. This man’s friends carried him for miles and when turned away because it was too crowded, they didn’t lose faith, instead they dug a hole in the roof and lowered him down to Jesus to heal. You have friends like this? Are you a friend like this?
Your circle matters

I've been enjoying all the meme-ing I've been hearing today about the New York Tunnel Jews that are the current Thing in the News. It's a fun and interesting story and it sounds like no human lives or property were seriously injured, which is a good thing. I continue to think that building secret underground tunnels is a pretty cool thing to do, whether done by Gentiles or Jews, although of course it is good to do this in a way that is safe and consistent with the wishes of the people who own the land upon which you're digging.

I know that I talk about how much I dislike the 90s Dracula movie often. So....here's a list of things I really like about it (which contribute to me finding this version so frustrating):
The Casting (for the most part)
The movie nails the casting of the suitors.
Tumblr media
Cary Elwes was an inspired choice for Arthur.
Quincey also spends the whole movie looking like this:
Tumblr media
I'd also say that I think Keanu Reeves could have been a fantastic Jonathan Harker. The script just gives him so little to work with.
He may not look much like Van Helsing in the book, but Anthony Hopkins was also playing the best Van Helsing he could, and it's really engaging to watch.
I've never felt like Lucy is well cast, but that is more a product of how much her character changes for this movie's plot.
2. This brief moment where the movie pretends it's going to let Lucy and Mina be more than friends:
Tumblr media
They kiss once and it is never mentioned again in the entire movie. It's very male gaze-y. You spend the rest of the movie wondering if you imagined it or if it was a dream sequence.
But, for a brief moment, if you watch it in isolation, this scene looks like it is going to veer into a queer reading of Dracula. (It doesn't, but there is a moment)
3. The Costuming
Pretty much all of the costumes in this movie are a treat to look at.
Like this dress:

or this one:

The men's costuming is also fantastic. It's no wonder that this movie won an academy award for costumes.
I mean, look at Drac being uncharacteristically fashionable:
Tumblr media
It comes down to this: My great frustration with the movie is that it looks how I want a Dracula adaptation to look. It has great actors, and for the most part it cast them in good roles. It has the budget, the soundtrack, the costuming. It could have been an amazing Dracula adaptation.
But then it veers off into some truly strange narrative choices and utterly changes pretty much all of the characters in the process. So you end up watching something that looks good, but does not resemble the book by the final act.

I think my greatest flaw as a writer is that I can't bring myself to write someone so self centered or egotistical as an Andrew Tate. Like, if you held a gun to my head and demanded I write someone like that, I would fuck it up and give him some sort of humanizing trait by absolute accident because my world view just cannot conceive of so cartoonish a person, so two-dimensional a personality, so smooth of brain as Andrew 'Please forget I have no chin and worship me as the peak of masculinity even though all I secretly crave is for a woman, any woman to take me even a little seriously' Tate.
See? I just fucking did it again.
What's YOUR greatest flaw as a writer? No judgement.

If you ever needed to know the extent of how the I/P conflict is fandomized, there is a popular post going around with a Sailor moon sticker saying Free Palestine and all the comments are talking about how it's their aesthetic and they totally need to buy it
Because this doesn't matter to them, it's just the cool hip and trendy thing

Actually trans people are allowed to call their body parts whatever they please. It's not "cringy" or "delusional" or "unrealistic". It's their damn bodies. If it gives them euphoria that's a good thing. It doesn't fucking hurt or bother anyone if a non op trans guy wants to say he's got a dick or if a flat chested trans girl refers to her tits or if any nonbinary or genderqueer person has weird or funny or made up terms for their body parts. It's not your damn business. Actually it's really dope and cool and also coming up with your own terms for your body to avoid dysphoria or cause euphoria? Fuckin awesome. Period.
