I recently had two Giant paintings in the works, and now one of them is finished! Here is the Giantess Gunnlöð; in Norse mythology, she was tasked by her father, Suttungr, to guard the Mead of Poetry in their mountain home, Hnitbjörg. When Odin snuck in, he slept with her for three nights in exchange for three draughts of the Mead. Once he drank all of it, he turned into an eagle and flew away. As for Gunnlöð, she later bore a son, Bragi, the skaldic god of poetry.
In my fic, Gunnlöð’s time of guarding the Mead has already passed. She’s much older now and an experienced warrior; I'd say she’s around Faye’s age if Faye was still alive XDD And speaking of Faye, I like to imagine that she and Gunnlöð became fighting partners back in the day, after Gunnlöð broke free of her isolation in Hnitbjörg!
I dressed Gunnlöð in a rose-gold palette, which is how Calliope would describe her compared to Thrúd’s fiery red-gold colours. Gunnlöð is one of the more “distant” Giants in my fic; she appears later on and doesn’t have much of a prominent role, but Calliope still has some interactions with her and learns more about her story.

originally put this on the discord but decided to put it here too. consider a TR AU where everyone liked Loki being king so much that even tho they all figured out pretty quickly he wasn't Odin they just didn't say anything and after Thor comes back and forces him to reveal himself they just keep on pretending not to notice even though he’s no longer even glamoured as Odin.
Thor: It seems I am king now.
Other Asgardians: no. Odin is king.
Thor: Odin is not here.
Other Asgardians: yes he is. he's right over there.
Thor: You know that’s Loki!
Everyone: Loki? Where? What are you talking about? Loki’s dead. That’s Odin.

Pre Ragnarok Thor used to be playful at times. Post Ragnarok Thor is a full on himbo.
But people mistaking / aligning his past playful behavior with his current himboness is what makes me pull out my hair.
"He was always a himbo!" NO HE WASN'T!
I’M JOINING YOU THERE 😭😭😭 Thor was PLAYFUL. He was SASSY. He was FUNNY and good-natured and kind and knew how to navigate situations to lift people up again. But Ragnarok!Thor and Love and Thunder!Thor just hurt me. The way he shattered that glass temple without a thought in the L+T introductory scene hurts my soul....
The only films I will defend as NOT disrespectful and out of character for Thor are “Infinity War” and, surprisingly enough, “Endgame”. (Both of which are unsurprisingly the ones NOT DIRECTED by our favorite daffodil man.)
But I mainly say that because Infinity War!Thor is in league with the original 2 Thor films, characterization wise, just with a darker tone, more fierce temper, and an entire insanity arc + revenge quest in tow... and Endgame I give a pass ONLY to Thor himself, and the things that he says and the actions that he takes. Mostly: the excessive drinking, food consumption as a stress reliever, and the concept of trying to escape his real world through a fantasy of some sort... (though I DESPISE the video game gag. It should have been actually anything else.)
The issue I take with Endgame is not Thor, but how the world and the characters surrounding Thor react to Thor from the first second to the last. They’re constantly making fun of him, belittling him, not including him in any team planning, blaming him for the snap, not trying to help him stop his blatantly obvious self destruction, are otherwise are openly and callously disgusted by or uncomfortable by his being there in the room for the aforementioned self-destruction, and that’s not talking about ABANDONING HIM FOR FIVE YEARS when everyone NOT NAMED TONY should have known better. (And I guess Clint because they weren’t ever close and Clint had his own heavy stuff going on.)
Steve should have checked in. He’s the leader and was Thor’s closest friend on the team. Natasha should have checked in, because she always USED to try and check in, and was taking charge of the team at the time. Bruce should have never left Thor completely in the first place, because nobody would understand how vulnerable, unsteady and in a dangerous place Thor would be in, mentally, emotionally and physically, than Bruce “The other guy spat it out” Banner, who let me remind everybody was THERE DURING THE LAST THREE TERRIBLE TRAGEDIES TO SEE IT FIRSTHAND. Rocket doing his own thing makes sense but then AT LEAST have him act with some level of patience towards Thor because he clearly was able to during Infinity War, and he would know better than anyone else (not named Bruce) how Thor is feeling and how awful it is.
And before anyone says “well they were all going though their own stuff and couldn’t be there for him” then I raise to you that Natasha was almost obsessively checking in with everyone and actively trying to keep things running, and Steve was hosting an emotional support and therapy group for post!snap victims in Falcon’s stead. Bruce was doing god knows what. The only person actually indisposed was Clint and he and Thor weren’t ever even close to begin with. And if you say “oh but they probably blamed him for the snap and that’s why” I just need you to really think about that statement and how awful that is, because they’re supposed to be his team and his friends. His earthen found family outside of the Jane crew. And even if they did blame Thor because they don’t know about Peter Quill and Gamora (who I’m sorry but I love Gamora; the snap is ENTIRELY her fault.) then that STILL doesn’t mean they can just ostracize and abandon the man and his people for five years because they’re mad.
I also take extreme issue with the cinematography team and the editing team for that film for deliberately making Thor the butt of the joke during the “how do we get the stones” scene in particular. (when Thor would have been the most valuable team asset. You know. Because he researched them and the glove made for them was made in one of HIS territories with HIS space metals.) and probably also that stupid “I think I’m having a panic attack” line because nobody says that. Otherwise, the man is drowning in his own despair at best and actively suicidal at worst because of everything that has ever happened to him the past 10 year phases 1-3 run, but yeah sure I guess that’s funny. And not unbearably heartbreaking.

This is another reminder that I'll never forgive Marvel for cutting this scene.
Loki wasn't some monster with a grand plan, he was a man who found out his entire family had lied to him his entire life and handled it badly. That didn't make him a villain.

underrated thor ragnarok trivia
thor uses more tricks learnt from natasha than any other avenger
when they couldn't find anyone to play the asgardian actor playing loki, chris hemsworth offered to get his friend matt to do it without telling anyone it was matt damon
loki both a) refers to the horns on his helmet as the "big bendy horns" and b) uses them as a melée weapon
there was a rejected gag of loki, as a child, disguising himself as a rug covering a pit to trap thor in looney tunes style
fenris is a female wolf (girrrrl power)
sif was the only person on asgard other than thor (related to him) and heimdall (literally has all-seeing powers) who loki thought would see through his odin disguise
the rocks thor throws at loki in the dungeon are bits that fell off korg
the get help trick works because loki weighs over 500lbs
in the script, hela calls loki a little shit when he arrives at the bifrost
tom hiddleston juggles knives when he's bored in combat choreography on set
heimdall has now committed treason four times in three movies against three different rulers

What intrigues me about the Thor 4 trailer is that between the teaser a few weeks (months? I don’t keep track of time anymore) back and last night’s full trailer, it seems like there is going to be a lot of plot happening in this film. Like, from what I gather, some plot points will include (but are not limited to):
- Flashbacks to Thor’s childhood on Asgard  - Thor traveling with the Guardians  - Thor getting into shape at some point (though this will probably be a montage rather than a plot) - Thor battling with the Guardians (or, at least, throwing his shawl[? - personally I think it’s a variation on the slutty poncho from TDW but.] to reveal his new post-workout physique)  - Thor walking away from battling with the Guardians  - Thor returning to New Asgard/meeting up with Valkyrie  - Encountering Thor!Jane  - Going on adventures with Val and Thor!Jane (ending up with him naked in an arena at some point; Taika really likes the arena scenes I guess)  - Encountering Gor  - Being threatened by Gor  - Battling with Gor  ^^ the fact that Gor is the Big Bad implies that all of the other things are just part of the journey to get to the eventual showdown with Gor, yet I’m sure Gor is a whole plot in itself, so. (Anything less would be a waste of Christian Bale.)
So basically what I’m saying is that I’m getting an idea of what Taika meant when he implied this movie is even crazier than Ragnarok and that’s cool with me tbh, there’s clearly too much going on to be able to tell from the trailers whether or not the movie will be good. Idk, I’m emotionally invested in this only to the extent that I will probably feel Loki’s absence like a big, gaping hole and I will feel Some Kinda Way if he’s not mentioned at all, but I was rather pleased that Thor appears to have a huge fucking tattoo of Loki’s horns on his back, so we’ll see how that all shakes out.
And basically, other than that, I’m more or less happy to enjoy the movie bc I love Thor and did I mention loving Christian Bale, bc I do and it’s actually kinda embarrassing how excited I am to see his character in this.
Anyway, not that anyone asked, but that’s my take.

Thor: Ragnarok could instead have been a sit-com about the Asgardian monarchy where Thor is due to inherit the throne and Loki has to murder him to get the job instead and Hela has to murder both of her brothers (because sexism, boo) and everyone's running about pretending to be Wholesome Siblings but fratricide of some sort is very much on the agenda and Thor's lightning powers are all that's keeping him alive at this point (because his siblings are ambitious and talented and own many sharp objects!) and I don't know how all that Jeff Goldblum stuff fits in, maybe it just doesn't, but anyway some sort of comedy hijinx ensue and it's a lovely heartwarming film/series about how your real family are the people you choose as allies while you murder your way to the throne and who you're gonna have to get rid of ASAP once you finally manage that because they know where you were on the night your older brother(s) were mysteriously stabbed by unknown assailants and how your dad really died.

I just got finished watching Thor: Love and Thunder, and this might be an unpopular opinion - I’m not sure - but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, honestly. It had that sense of Comedy, albeit, it wasn’t as much as Ragnarok... and you know what... I liked that, honestly. It had more of a serious feel to it, with the undertones of comedy and second hand embarrassment. (I can’t tell you how many times I had to pause the movie and sit there to psych myself up into pressing play again because I knew I would feel so embarrassed at what Thor was going to say or do.)
I know I’ve seen takes from people saying it wasn’t as “strong” as Ragnarok... and as far as Comedy goes... they’re right. It wasn’t an outright, full to the brim, comedy and comedy only. But it had a lot of messages in it - I believe - that makes it a really good movie to sit down and watch. I loved the journey Thor went on, finding himself... realizing that it was alright that Mjolnir chose someone else... that he was still worthy of being Thor. I loved how Peter at the beginning of the movie helped him realize that it’s alright to feel shitty about having love and loosing it... it’s better to have felt that love and lost it... then not feeling it at all. How he needed to find who he was and become comfortable with himself again. I love how Jane tried to keep a good face up around others, that she wasn’t afraid of what was happening to her, but desperately being frightened and wanting to live underneath it all. I love how to begin with she tries telling herself that Mjolnir is curing her, even though it’s kind of the opposite... And how when push came to shove, she chose her love and her will to aid people over her life - solidifying not only to anyone watching the movie, but also to herself that she was worthy of being Thor, and how that worthiness gets her a place in Valhalla - Resting Place of the Gods. That look she gives Thor - knowing  that using the strength of Mjolnir to shatter the pieces of the Necrosword will probably end up killing her... ugh, it almost makes me cry in such an emotional way.
I honestly enjoyed Gorr as well... How love for his daughter as well as the scorning of his god drove him into the depression and madness that allowed the Necrosword to whisper its honeyed words and snare him in its trap. How he was really driven by revenge - telling himself it was the right thing to do in the whole scheme of the universe... Without the gods, they couldn’t be scored, they couldn’t be harmed, right? I liked how even though he kidnapped the children, he never harmed them... Yes, he did scare them, but didn’t harm them - showing that his love for his daughter was still there under the surface... his driving factor. How after everything - when he’s standing there in front of Eternity - it isn’t the destruction of all gods that he wishes for... It’s for his daughter to live again, to have a future.
Yes, like I said... it wasn’t an all out comedy at every turn that Ragnarok was- it wasn’t supposed to be... But I know people look at it and go “This wasn’t as good as Ragnarok, it was weak in comparison”. But honestly, you can’t really do that to movies - even though I know everyone always does... Thor: Love and Thunder isn’t a remix of Ragnarok... It stands on its own. It’s another story... (yes, a continuation of Thor’s story, but still a different story). Another story with different characters, some returning characters, and a whole different vibe going on.
Will I watch it again? Absolutely! Will I drag my wife into watching it with me? Hell’s yes! Will I have to bury my face in embarrassment at the same parts when I watch it again or pause the movie to give myself a pep talk to strengthen myself for that embarrassment to come? Oh heaven’s yes, lol! But in all honesty... and this may sound weird... but I LIKE those moments. I LIKE feeling so much second hand embarrassment that I either have to bury my face going “Ooooohhhh nooooo!” or pause the movie and go “I can’t, I just... can’t!” for like a few moments to get the mental fortitude so I can continue on. But in doing so, it also gives me my own boost and courage - as weird as that sounds.
All in all I think it was a well done movie, and a good chapter in Thor’s life. I can’t wait to see the next installment, honestly!
My favorite characters... The goats. Hands down the goats. I’m sorry, but whenever they were on screen I grinned like an absolute idiot and probably giggled too much - imho they stole the show. Screaming Goats, man, c’mon!
In the end, can we praise it for what it really is... another chapter in the Thor saga - only this time it was not just a tale of Thor Odinson, but also the Mighty Thor Jane Foster and the strength and will she had to save all she could. Not to mention how sometimes - at the end of it all - words can move mountains while swords dig holes. (aka, sometimes words are needed instead of violence)

🌩️ Your father was the Lü Bu, the Flying General himself, and when you heard from the Valkyrie named Brunhilde that he was set to fight in the first match of Ragnarok, you gave him the best support he could’ve asked for
🌩️ You sat alongside his army, with his strategist, Chen Gong, sitting next to you, trying to keep you from jumping down and attacking the God of Thunder yourself
🌩️ When Chen Gong and the others sacrificed themselves, stating their loyalty to you father, you stood there in shock and tear-filled eyes as Thor looked at you, seeing a child without anyone left
🌩️ He felt guilty, but this was what they wanted, they wanted to join their lord, and while he initially wanted to just leave the area, he walked up to you and shocked the Gods and Humans as he kneeled down and hugged you
🌩️ After that day, you stayed by Thor’s side, he reminded you so much of your father it would make you cry
🌩️ Thor may not be the best person when it comes to comforting, but he tries his best when it comes to you, Lü Bu was the one person who could stand a fight against him, and because of this, he would try training you to be just as strong as your father and him
🌩️ He honors your father with you. Every day on his birthday, and on the days of each of his soldiers, including Chen Gong, you would walk into a field in the forest located in the Chinese section of Valhalla, you would both hand off flowers and lay them on the graves you and him had made
🌩️ The words he said to you when he comforted you that day are words that you will never forget
“ Your father was an honorable man, I hope you know that. And because of the honor he possessed, I will take you in as my own. I believe it is something that your father would’ve wanted. “

🪩 He believed that Raiden was the one opponent he would remember the rest of his life, and when he saw the now-deceased rikishi stare at a young child with the two Valkyries, he froze
🪩 The man was a father, just like him
🪩 But while his child could handle loss of someone easily, you appeared to be around a young teen, this must’ve been one of the hardest things you ever had to witness
🪩 Shiva looked at you and back at the crumbling Raiden Tameemon, guilt filled his heart, which was something he hadn’t felt for such a long time, why did he feel guilty? He just won and brought honor to his pantheon!
🪩 Watching as you ran down and tried hugging the remaining pieces of your father just got him staring back at his wives and son, and when he saw how saddened their eyes were then they looked at you
🪩 The God of Destruction walked up to you and you jumped back when his one arm reached out to you, and that action made the Humans cry out for him to not hurt you
🪩 He kneeled down and since he was just on fire, the heat that radiated off of him made you hold your head away from him
“ Look at me, young one. “
🪩 You looked up at him and saw how his eyes shimmered with guilt, making you look at where your father once stood and back at the man who caused his demise
🪩 Shiva held is one arm back as you tried helping him stay standing when he slumped over in pain, after all, losing three arms doesn't exactly make anyone, including Gods, feel very good
🪩 Once you came to visit him with his wives and son, he saw how you carried yourself around him, not with resentment or fear, but with care and gentleness, making him smile
🪩 Whenever he rested, you laid next to him, you were like another child of his, and when he offered to take care of you in the Hindu Pantheon, it made you jump up and down and hug him and his wives as they agreed to taking you in as their own
“ Your father was one of the best fighters I have ever met in my thousands of years of life. And… seeing you look so painfully at where your father once stood, I just, I knew you had to have someone there for you. Would you do me, and my wives, the honor of joining our family? ”

What are your thoughts on guardians vol.3? (If you have watched it) I went into it, expecting it went to the garbage like the rest of the mcu, but I was pleasantly surprised by its creativity, trope subversion, and how it wrapped up the previously unresolved arks of its characters.
That's what I've heard!
The thing is, Guardians 3 could be the most transcendent work of cinema ever made, and I'd probably still feel little to no motivation to watch it at this point. It's not Guardians's fault - it's just suffering from the same problem that superhero comics have been struggling with for decades: no matter how good an individual arc or run is, absolutely nothing good lasts or matters in the long term, and the stories are shaped in such a way that "the long term" is the only thing anyone gets to build towards.
Whenever I complain about the MCU I get a handful of people loudly complaining about my complaining, with the general thesis that if I don't like it I shouldn't watch it or talk about it - if I'm not having fun, just stop engaging with it. And the thing is, I have. I am intellectually interested in why this massive franchise is fumbling the bag so hard, which is why I still check in on it sometimes, but I've long since stopped turning to the MCU for uncritical entertainment. And even the good movies or shows with a lot of interesting ideas - good character arcs, fun concepts, interesting planting for future payoff - don't draw me in anymore, because they're hooked into a massive moneymaking machine that will scrap and squander anything if they think it'll make them more in the quarter. It doesn't matter how good the writing is, because the writers are not allowed to tell a complete, finished story, and they have no control over what happens to their characters outside of their own script.
Captain America's arc was set up from literally minute one to answer one burning question at the core of his character: does a world without a war still need Captain America? After that incredibly basic tee-up at the end of First Avenger, half a dozen movies failed to come up with a reason to say "yes," and now Steve is retired for good after getting fumbled through four different storylines that couldn't even pretend that they needed him (the unused Chekhov's Phone from the end of Civil War still haunts me). The foundational arc of his entire character never happened because nobody bothered to keep track of it past a single movie.
Taika did something interesting with Thor in Ragnarok - take away Mjolnir, force him to recognize what it means to be the god of thunder, give him a very Odin-y missing eye - and the very next movie undid all of it. Just kidding, never mind, here's an eye and a new weapon and also his old weapon again, and in one more movie we're even gonna give him his hair back, probably as an apology for all the completely unironic fatphobia we're gonna slather him in for two and a half hours. I'm not even surprised Love And Thunder was such an overblown mess that barely took itself seriously - why would Taika bother trying to give Thor another arc when the powers that be will just roll it back in six months anyway?
I hear Rocket Raccoon has a fantastic arc in this movie. That's great, and demonstrates that he's being written by a writer that deeply cares about him. But he's part of the MCU, and the MCU doesn't let anything end, so if current patterns hold, Rocket is going to continue to serve as quippy plushie-bait for the next dozen movies and none of that depth is going to come through in the long term. Hell, since they're making Kang noises for the Next Big Threat and Kang's entire gimmick is rewriting timelines, literally none of this is guaranteed to matter. By next year, it might not have even happened anymore.
The MCU has successfully shaped itself into a paradigm where the bright spots of good writing are overridden and lost as soon as the writers room turns over, and that makes it really hard for me to muster up the enthusiasm to watch even a really good movie that's locked into the exact same grist mill as everything else. I'm glad people liked it, I hope it gets to stay good this time - I just have no desire to watch it.
