2.7 archon quest rambling casual analysis so uh yeah huge spoilers <3

like no i’m dead serious it’s legit a short essay

first off, huge props for mihoyo bc they’re really stepping up their quests game. this shit’s getting better and better.

while this is an analysis of the archon quest, i’ll be much more focused on the character interactions bc that is my jam

general quest

okay so the only part of this archon quest that i actually dislike is part 1. itto was thrown under the bus constantly and i felt so bad for him. before 2.7 we were making progress on his character development (i’ll get back to this later in the analysis a,sjeAKSJE) for it to be tossed into the fire in the first part. i read through some discussions and a lot of people, myself included, agreed that this was done to cater kuki. that way she can act as essentially his mom. i really didn’t like this lmao like what this was so out of left field.

again everything and everyone was so unnecessarily hostile towards him. and i heard that the localization of eng/jpn is actually different than cn. in cn, itto was apparently more of a loveable idiot than obnoxious idiot. but again i heard it through a 2nd party so idk how true this was.

part 2 and 3 were SO so so so much better. everybody actually cooperated as we slowly unravel the mystery. the domains were really fun too! i love that in the 3rd one, they actually force you to think a bit LMAO. ngl that last domain actually got me bamboozled a bit but i loved the concept.

i adore any quests where you unravel the unknown. this quest was low key creepy and i enjoyed every bit of it.

character development + interactions

this was the bread and butter of this quest i will not be taking ANY questions

itto: this quest just continue to prove that itto is such a sincere guy. his heart is big and so are his actions. the dude wears his heart on his sleeves. if i’m being honest with you, he really was the core of the group. he kept the spirits lively, even if he was being really irritating and constantly picked at initially.

he acts like he knows everything but honestly mad respects for that. he could’ve at any point just cower in the corner but instead he (literally and figuratively) took charge. for example: he was the one to head into the mysterious door first, he was the one to first to hop straight into the mysterious entrance with an ass cracked. some may see this as stupidly brazen but i see it more of as him just ensuring the safety of others at the expense of his own safety. that’s why kuki keeps him in check constantly lmao.

in part 3 especially where he LITERALLY threw himself at that giant boulder/rock and knocked himself out for the rest of the quest LMAO and why did he do it? to divert the attention away from xiao sacrificing himself and prevent further fighting. the guy literally met yelan, xiao, paimon and to a certain extent yanfei like 3 days ago. he didn’t have to do that but he did. him and ushi kept things refreshing <3 they’re the group’s personal cheerleaders lmao

kuki shinobu: unfortunately kuki mostly got stuck with the role of babysitting itto. and if i’m even more honest, the story would still progressed the same if she wasn’t there. T-T BUT we are here for the good vibes. being a mom aside, she’s very similar to yelan where she is cool-headed and is very resourceful. she brought extra food just in case so she already had some sort of survival plan going in the chasm. she’s also itto’s translator, i’ve noticed LMAO she is the one who knows his best after all so she helps the others understand why he did or said the things that he did.

i really wished she had more of a role during this quest but sadly she doesn’t have that much of a connection to the domain unlike yelan or xiao. hopefully she’ll play even a bigger role in inazuma’s next big event!

yanfei: i think her character interactions were really straightforward tbh and that’s not bad at all! yanfei maintained her cool and didn’t stray towards the goal to escape. she also checked in with everyone to make sure that they are well rested and not hungry. i really appreciate that. in scenarios like this, there’s always one person who plays the caretaker and yanfei was the one. she’s also very intelligent an utilizing her existing knowledge to try and solve the mystery. i mean if it wasn’t for her, they wouldn’t really know how to activate the clock.

also i loved the fact that she followed us around while trying to manifest xiao’s portal lmao i hope they do more of that bc it’s such a tiny thing but it makes me feel like characters are alive and not static.

yelan: she really didn’t grow on me until pt 2 and 3 bc she kept attacking my boi itto LMAO but once the story really gets going, we get to see more of her personality. she’s very cunning and witty. extremely intelligent and always try to be one step ahead of everyone. kind of like a spy, y’know? she didn’t try to be a smart-aleck and talk down to everyone. she’s like a mix of ningguang and yanfei, character wise but more laxed. she does things at her pace and not overworked like poor ganyu. she also kind of reminds of eula for some odd reason?? i think it’s how frank they are and they’re not afraid to speak their mind. and also having family members that play a big part in the story too lmao

i look forward to playing her story quest. hopefully i’ll like her much more there!

xiao: OKAY THIS IS WHERE THE GOOD SHIT IS.

it’s very difficult for me to describe his character well because i enjoy his chararacter on a more emotional level??? LMAO but he’s tragic yet still so hopeful? before 2.7 xiao would always disappear a second after he show up and say like 3 lines. so we never really got a full development. he would always be so distant (and for his own personal reasons) so it was really difficult to analyze him without calling him cold-hearted. but in truth, he is just a sad boy doing everything he can to protect everyone. my friend said that why he was such a good character was he is so loyal to his mission and his beliefs that he’s willing to deny himself simple pleasures of having friends or even accepting help. maybe deep, deep down he craves it. but we might never know. his beliefs has been engrained into him for hundreds of years. it’s very hard to change that. he’s convinced that he’ll be isolated for the rest of his living years. so he doesn’t attach himself to simple pleasures. it’s too dangerous.

it was incredible to see him clearly building a wall around him to only see it crumble by a a tiiiiiny bit. everyone wants to help him and it’s such a foreign concept to him :’)

in the end despite the resistance he STILL committed himself to getting everybody out, despite it almost killing him. and what made me teared up was the fact that his face when he was free falling into the darkness was that he looked so... at peace? like he was ready to pass on and see his fellow yakshas. if it wasn’t for zhongli i think he would’ve been accepting his death right there and then. WE ALMOST LOST THIS ANGEL Y’ALL THE DEATH FLAGS ARE REALLY WAVING

bonus interactions that has to do with xiao:

traveler and xiao - okay FULL disclosure i’m a lumine/traveler x xiao fan so i might be biased here. but i’m gonna try my best and be more nuanced.

so xiao is one of the characters that i think has a special connection with the traveler (albedo being the other one). xiao as we first knew him was very distant. i felt that he was really similar to the traveler bc they’re from a foreign land and a foreign time. they’re lonely, isolated, scared even. i think xiao can relate himself to that. they both have this giant burden on their shoulders. they find solace in each other companions. like a moment of time has paused and they stop to think and talk to each other.

OH and the fact that the traveler was so observant of xiao in this quest? when he was resting from his wounds, the traveler just watched him trying their best to not disturb him. the same when we went to the temple of pervases. after the really sad talk they just... stood in silence. the traveler was watching him and his expression in details too (comparing his expression to being out in the blizzard). this duo is the type of duo who enjoys each other’s companionship in silence and watching the sunset for hours. the traveler doesn’t disturb him. they just watch. i love it sm hngg

zhongli: i’m like the only one who finds ZL suspicious a FUCK. like idk what’s going on up there king but he’s planning something BIG. maybe not now but he’s up to somethin’. but anyways, i talked to this with my friend but we were curious to how xiao’s loyalty to rex lapis could potentially cost him his own life. maybe zhongli is so smooth of a talker that i’m convinced he’s EVIL but i think that this has a small chance of being xiao’s downfall. full COPIUM KSAJE idk i just think that xiao’s unwavering loyalty will cost him somehow. ZL saved him again so that means xiao is once again indebted to ZL. whether that will come back to bite him in the ass, no one ever knows except for mhy.

ok i loved this quest so much and i hope this continues for future quests <3 (esp for kazuha’s pls)

Pairing: OPLA!Vinsmoke Sanji x Reader Word Count: 831 words Warnings: None

reverie (noun): a state of being pleasantly lost in one's thoughts; a daydream

You imagine the thoughts in your head as a forest of kelp at the bottom of the sea: dense, beautiful, brimming with life and all too easy to get lost in.

They’ve caused you trouble in the past. Countless rapped knuckles, letters sent home to your parents, walking into trees on the way home from school. But how could you resist? Empires rose and fell over the course of an hour inside your mind, mighty beasts swore their allegiance to you and the four seas were yours to explore. The childhood you had in the real world was so dull and lonely in comparison.

When you ran off and joined the Straw Hats, you finally had the excitement you had so craved. And yet, even now, your mind still wanders.

“If you swab the deck any more, we won’t have any left, sweetheart.”

Only a select few can bring you back.

You blink rapidly, the clouds dissipating as you stop scrubbing and look up. Sanji’s already smiling when you meet his gaze.

He lifts his hands; one offers a plate of shortbread cookies, the other a glass of milk.

“I’m going to guess that you haven’t had a break in a while,” he says. “Am I right?”

A break? Sending him a perplexed frown, you lean on the handle of your scrub brush and glance over your shoulder.

The side on which you had started winks back at you from afar, wood gleaming under the afternoon sun.

Oh.

“I … I guess so,” you reply slowly, turning back to him. It’s only then that you register the saltwater washing over your feet and the ache in your muscles. “I didn’t even realize …”

He shakes his head and chuckles, leading you to some nearby crates to sit down. “Too caught up in your stories again? I’m almost jealous that they get to spend so much time with you.”

“I don’t mean to make you worry.”

“Loving someone means worrying about them from time to time.”

He winks, and you smile, flustered.

“I see,” you say quietly. “Then thank you for worrying, Sanji.”

“Of course.” He hands you the glass of milk, then picks up a cookie and taps it against your lips. “Now, this is my best batch of sablés. You have no idea how hard it was to keep Luffy from eating them all in the kitchen.”

“I have some idea,” you drawl amusedly, taking a bite.

The cookie breaks with a gentle snap. It crumbles delightfully in your mouth, sugar and butter dancing on your tongue. A pleased hum rumbles in your throat before you wash it down with a gulp of cold milk.

“What do you think?”

“I think I might eat the whole plate right now,” you say, taking the other half of the cookie.

He grins. “So you like them.”

“They’re delicious.” Picking up another one, you hold it in front of his face. “Here.”

Sanji’s gaze remains locked with yours as he leans forward to take a bite of the cookie, his lips brushing your fingertips in an impromptu kiss before he pulls away. He chews thoughtfully. The action should not look as good as it does.

“My best batch, as I’ve said,” he tells you once he swallows. “But I’ve tasted sweeter.”

You tilt your head. “Where?”

His mouth curls into a smirk, and he places his fingers under your chin to bring your face closer to his. Your noses touch and you can feel his answer against your lips as he murmurs, “Right here.”

The rest of the crew may also have the pleasure of eating Sanji’s food, but they do not share your privilege of knowing just how talented he is at kissing.

He sets down the plate and lifts his hand to cup your jaw, meeting your lips and letting out a soft sigh before pressing his lips more fervently against yours. You can taste the smoke on his tongue, a constant underneath the warm sweetness of sugar and the saltiness of butter. Your eyes flutter closed, and you reach up to cradle the back of his head, fingers tangling in his hair and tugging slightly. The groan he lets out sends tingles down to the tips of your toes.

“Sweetheart,” he pants, and the longing in his voice would’ve made your knees buckle if you were standing, “I won’t be able to stop if you keep doing that.”

You put your glass of milk down so you can bury both hands in his golden hair. Your forehead touches his. “Maybe that’s a good thing.”

“Maybe it is,” he mutters.

You bring him back in for another searing kiss that Sanji returns just as eagerly.

Yes, you value your time alone with your thoughts. They are a forest of kelp at the bottom of the sea, beautiful, countless, and wild.

But as easy as it is to get lost in your thoughts, it is infinitely easier to get lost in him.
