Engagement Party
"Hey!" I say as I put the call on speaker.
"Where are you?" Adrian asks with a straight voice.
"I'm getting dressed. Where are you?"
"Getting out. I called so you won't ditch me at the last minute."
"That was one time. You need to let it go, Adrian." I shout out from the bathroom.
"You've done it more than once. If you try anything today, I will come to your apartment and drag you out." He sounded a little too serious.
"God! I'll be there, dude. Calm down."
He chuckles lightly, "I'll see you. Bye."
"Bye!"
I fix the off-shoulder dress for the hundredth time. I got a beautiful emerald-colored dress that accentuates the curves I'm comfortable with. It ended above my knees and even had matching heels. I finished the outfit with a gold chain with the initials 'JBB' on it.
"I'm sorry. I promise to bring you some nice treats tomorrow. We could go to the park." I pet Leo before walking out of the room.
"Wait! If I don't have a major hangover." Leo follows me as I fill his tray with food and refill his water dispenser.
"You're set. Have fun, Leo." I kiss his nose gently.
I grab my purse and phone from the side table. Just as I put on my lipstick again, Leo barks loudly.
"Hey, bud!"
I walk out of the room to check whether I was hallucinating. Turns out I wasn't. He's back. Leo pounced on him as he kneeled.
Bucky beams as Leo licks his face, "I missed you too."
"Hey." I lean against the frame.
Bucky gives me a toothy smile. He strides across the room and kisses me gently before moving back. As his eyes roam down, his lips sneak into a grin.
"You look perfect, Doll."
Before he could do anything, I hold his face in my hands.
"I'll be fine, Y/N." He nibs on my palm.
"You could be stabbed and you would say that. How did it go?" I ask while surveying the scrapes.
"Good. It went as we planned." Bucky smiles and places both of his hands on the sides of my waist. He places light kisses down my neck,
"You look beautiful. I think my heart skipped a beat when I saw you. I could get used to this."
I try to suppress the moan that still manages to leave.
"Uhm, B-Bucky?"
He hums, which creates a tingly sensation on the skin of my collar bone.
"I need to leave," I whisper.
He stops and sends me a glare.
"I'm sorry."
Bucky huffs and moves to the couch. His face carried his usual scowl as he stared into oblivion. Leo joins him and nuzzles his head on Bucky's lap. Bucky hesitantly runs his hands through Leo's back. I laugh which is immediately picked by the soldier. He shuts me up with his death glare before looking back.
I walk to the side of the couch, "Bucky. You know I wouldn't leave you if I didn't have a good reason."
He groans in response.
I sit beside him, "I even told you. About the engagement party for Rox and Jake. Remember?"
He slightly turns his head to my side and pouts, "It's just that we didn't see each other for three weeks."
"I know. I wouldn't go if it wasn't important. Those two would kill me if I wasn't there for them. Adrian too. Besides, I told Jake to leave the party stuff to me. He was so nervous when we went to pick the ring. Adrian and I literally couldn't stop laughing."
Bucky lightly smiles, "Yeah. You can't miss that."
I kiss his forehead, "They asked about you. I told them you had a thing."
"I would come, but I'm really tired to dress fancy."
I give him an understanding nod, "It's fine. Rox loves classy stuff, so..."
My phone rings, "Shit! Hey."
"WHERE ARE YOU?!" Bucky laughs while throwing the ball for Leo.
"I'm on the way."
"GET HERE FAST! EVERYONE'S HERE AND YOU KNOW I HATE SMALL TALK." He whisper-yells.
"I'll be there in ten minutes. I promise."
"Fine."
"Okay!" I grab the ball from Bucky's hand, "No BALLS in the house."
"We come with them, doll." He grins, clearly satisfied with himself.
"Really?" He nods.
"I've set everything for Leo. I didn't know you would be back today, so I didn't cook anything. I could order you food?"
"I'll do it." He gets up and pulls me in for a bear hug.
"Okay! If you need anything, just call me. I'll be at Rizter's. And Buck?" I whisper the last part in his ears.
"Yeah?"
"You need to take a shower. I love you, but dude, you stink."
He laughs and pulls away, "I will. I love you too. I'm sorry I can't come."
"You don't have to be. I get it." I kiss him again before moving towards the door, "I need to leave before Adrian loses his shit. Behave, both of you."
I hear 'I'm sorry that I left you with her.' as I close the door.
I 'Fast and furious' my way to the bar. I get in to find the place beautifully set. It was hard to imagine this place as a bar. Every corner had perfect lighting and white flower arrangements. All servers wore a formal suit as they served drinks and Hors d'oeuvre. Every corner is filled with music and conversation.
"Kind of you to finally join us." Adrian comes to me with two drinks in his hands.
"I'm really sorry. You're off-duty." I take a sip of the champagne as Adrian hands me a few starters.
"You look good."
"Hmm... Thanks. You look nice." I check my phone while trying to swallow the food down, "Damn, these are good!"
"Right?"
"He said they'll be here in thirty minutes. This was sent fifteen minutes ago."
We both look at each other, "Shit!"
"They'll be here in ten minutes. Is everything set?" Adrian asks the lead singer.
"Yeah. Once he's on his knees, we'll start."
"We need the mic for a second." He nods and points to the mic.
"Hey, everyone!" Adrian says into the mic and people turn to us.
"Go ahead." Adrian pushes me to the mic.
"Uhm, hi everyone. I am Y/n and this is Adrian. I hope everyone is having a great time. So, they'll be here in less than ten minutes. This is how it's going to work. All of us will be in the far corner. Once they get in, we need to be quiet. When the string lights are on, we can move. We'll be here to lead you. So, let's give them the best engagement ever!"
Everyone cheers as the band resume.
Adrain and I begin to crowd people at the end. Once we had that in control, I move to the band to make sure they're all set. I am in charge of the lights, so I move to that area.
"DON'T FORGET. PIN DROP SILENCE! PLEASE PUT YOUR DEVICES ON SILENT. ANYONE WHO RUINS THIS WILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH ME. UNDERSTOOD?"
I hear few understood's from the other side.
"THANKS, GUYS."
I switch the lights off. All we have to do is to wait for them.
My heart pounds out of my chest when the door opens. There was only one figure, which got me confused. Before I could run to any conclusions, the person speaks.
"Y/N?"
I immediately recognize the voice, "Bucky!"
I run and pull him with me,
"What are you doing?" He asks as I stand behind the multiple wires and switches.
"Trying to create a good memory for my best friends. What are you doing?" I whisper.
"Trying to be a supportive husband while you create a good memory for your best friends." He whispers back.
"Sorry. I need to be alert. I'm not going to mess this up. Could you see us from there?"
"No."
"Great! If the super-soldier can't see us, those dummies won't."
Before Bucky could reply, the door opens again. This time Rox walks in with Jake tailing her.
"What's happening here?" Rox asks before she turns back to find Adrian on one knee.
I switch the light on for the band, which is followed by a harmony of 'This magic moment'. I could feel Bucky's chest pressing against my back. We send each other a small smile and turn back to the couple.
"The best thing in my life began from this bar. Even though I always knew you were more than a friend, this place is where it all started. This song was playing in that breakfast diner when I finally understood the feeling I have when I see you or am anywhere near you. I can't think of my life without you. You make everything better when I'm with you. I love you, Roxanne. Will you marry me?" Jake opens the ring box.
Rox bents down and hugs him. She says something in his ears, that makes Jake nod and hug her back. They both kiss each other with tears flowing.
"Is it a yes?" Jake asks trying to control his broken voice.
Rox shakes her head and laughs between sobs, "Hundred percent!"
Jake places the ring on her index finger, placing both of them on their foot and kissing her again.
I switch the lights on and on queue, we shout "CONGRATS!" Rox jumps on Jake.
Everyone yells multiple things as they walk to the engaged couple. I turn to Bucky to make sure he's okay with the noise,
"You good?" I slowly turn so we're facing each other.
"I'm good." He smiles before pushing me forward, "Go!"
"I'll wait, so we both can go together and wish them." I wrap my arm around his.
Bucky presses a kiss on my hair before I stand in front of him, "I'll never get used to seeing you in a suit. You look handsome." I run my hands through the edges of his black jacket.
He blushes slightly and smiles, "Just trying to reach your level." I move closer and sniff him,
"That's the stuff." I close my eyes as I inhale his vanilla and bourbon scent.
Bucky laughs as he pinches my waist gently, "You're weird."
"What? You should be flattered. I love the way you smell." Bucky raises his eyes.
"Y/N! Stop inhaling Bucky!" Rox says while pulling me in for a hug.
"I'm so happy for you guys!" I pull Jake in for a group hug.
"I'm happy too." We all laugh at the way too familiar whining,
"Get in here, Adrian." Jake extends his hand for him.
I move back to Bucky once we break.
"Congratulations." Bucky wishes both of them.
"Thanks, Bucky," Rox says.
"I'm glad you could make it," Jake says while handing all of us champagne glasses.
"To the future Mr. and Mrs. Reign!" Adrian proudly raises a toast.
Rox looks at her ring, "I'm going to be a married woman soon. Can you believe it?" Jake wraps himself around her.
"I can. Took forever." I say while going for another sip.
Adrian continues, "If it weren't for us, you two would take another billion years to start dating in the first place."
Jake sighs and Rox rolls her eyes, "Get ready for it, Bucky."
Bucky snickers as I get defensive.
"You two won't take this away from us. We planned a blind date for you, so you would give it a chance."
"Exactly! We were tired of both of you looking at each other like love-sick puppies and doing absolutely nothing about it."
"The number of times we had to play peacemakers when they fought about kitchen appliances, vacation spots-"
Adrian looks at me, "The time when they were snapping at each other about that new exercise machine dumbhead bought?"
"Yeah! We're proud of this relationship and everything we did for it."
Adrian and I fist bump each other as the other three laughed at us.
"Fine. Thank you for all the hard work you put into our relationship." Jake says with sarcasm dripping.
"I recognize the tone, but I'll still take it. You're very welcome." I answer as Adrian nods in agreement.
"Seriously, thanks for helping me. I would have wrecked it without you two."
"Anytime."
We continue to talk till their parents reminded us that we couldn't talk to each other for the rest of the night.
After thirty minutes of walking around and talking to everyone, I walked back to Bucky. He was talking to Adrian as I sat beside him.
"Adrian, you're the only one left. I think it's time to call time of death on your one-night lifestyle."
Adrian cries, "Not this again. I told you, I will stop when I find someone."
"You’ve found plenty of men and women. You don't give them a chance."
"I'll talk to you later, Bucky." Adrian gives me the middle finger before leaving.
"I'm sorry for leaving you alone."
"It's fine. It's better than not being able to see you for weeks." He leans back on the chair.
"That's why someone warned me about some creep." I keep a straight face as Bucky's smile wavers.
"I'm kidding. Though, I did notice you staring few times."
"Y/N..." He sighs.
"Thanks for coming. I know you're tired. We could leave after some time." I place my hands on top of his leather-covered ones. He smiles as he plays with my wedding band.
Bucky's lips merge into a straight line as he focuses on the ring, "Did you want this?"
"Want what?" I ask as his eyes lift to find mine.
"All this for your proposal?" He looked guilty, which stung me.
"No. I don't like grand gestures. I believe if you ask in a sewage pipe or with a banner across Burj Khalifa, it should mean the same to you. Besides, it's a personal choice. But for me, couldn't care less of how, if it's genuine."
Bucky smiles, "I'm lucky to have you."
I run my hands through his pulled back hair to set the one sticking out, "I'm the lucky one. By the way, I loved the way you asked me. Remember?"
"You were tracing the lines on my arm. I was playing with your hair. I felt at peace, which made me think about how you always make me feel at peace and more. So I asked without thinking about it. You froze for a second, but then you smiled and looked at me. Won't forget the feeling when you said yes." Bucky's eyes were scrunched up from his smile.
"Exactly. We're going to cherish that feeling for the rest of our lives. I don't need a party. I need you."
Bucky blushes as he takes a sudden interest in the bottle of beer in his hands.
"Did I just make James Buchanan Barnes blush twice in an hour? It has to be some world record." I taunt him as he groans.
Bucky looks at me with a playful smirk, "I love the new necklace."
"Really? I bought it from a Justin Bieber merch site."
To say his expression changed would be an understatement. Bucky had his eyebrows narrowed as he stared at the necklace. He clenched his jaw as he drank the beer without taking his eyes off.
"Wait! You didn't think it was for you, right?" I ask, masking my amusement.
He shrugs, "No. I didn't know he had a middle name. It looks like crap from this side."
I burst out laughing, "Oh my god! I'm kidding."
"You're annoying." He tilts his head away from me.
"I bought this two weeks ago. I missed you so much that week. So when I saw an online ad, I jumped on the opportunity and got a personalized one. But now that it looks like crap from that side..."
Bucky pulls my head to his. He kisses me with a dominating hold. He pulls back and runs his thumb at the sides of my swollen lip,
"It's beautiful. It doesn't look crappy anymore." Like that, the playful smirk is back.
"P. D. A. You have come a long way, Mr. Barnes." I grab the beer from his hands.
"Only for you, Mrs. Barnes." He plays with the ends of my dress.
"Uhm, lovebirds?"
I turn my head to the smiling idiot behind me, "Yes, Adrian?"
"Rox needs the group for pictures."
I throw my head back, "Fine. Let's go."
I walk with Adrian beside me, "I'm surprised Jake is st-"
Adrian stops me, "Bucky?"
Bucky looks up at us, "Yeah?"
"You need to walk there." Adrian's words take Bucky by surprise. I smile at him as he composes himself.
"Uhm, I thought you said the group."
Adrian laughs loudly, "You're part of the group. We don't have a coronation ceremony, but I think we should."
"I agree." We both laugh together.
"Three more for the motion to start." Adrian grabs a quiche from one of the servers.
I hold my hand out for Bucky. He stands with a small smile and holds my hand.
When we got there, both of them were on each other.
"I left you for two seconds!" Adrian says while pretending to puke. An immediate 'ow!' is heard when Rox hits him on his head.
"Animals." I scrunch my nose in disgust while Bucky awkwardly looks around.
"Just take the pictures." Jake looks at us unamused.
I turn back to Bucky, "How do I look?"
"Perfect."
"Constructive criticism, Buck."
He looks me up and down and replies with a shit-eating grin, "None."
"Your lipstick." Rox says while fixing her makeup.
I blankly stare at him as I take my lipstick out and use the camera to look at it.
"Oh my god! James!" The lipstick was wildly messed up. It was smudged at the ends and the red was missing in between. And the reason for it is standing in front of me like he has no clue.
"What?"
I hand him my purse and fix the damage. After wiping it out completely and re-applying it, it looked perfect.
Bucky holds the purse up for me to keep everything back. He brings his lips closer to my ear,
"We haven't seen each other for three weeks. It's cute that you think I'm not going to ruin your lipstick again."
I could feel my ears heating up and blood rushing through my cheeks. I turn back immediately to save myself from more of his teasing.
"Okay. Can we start?" I ask, trying to ignore Bucky's laugh.
We begin with Rox and Jake standing in the middle with Bucky, me, and Adrian at their sides. Bucky lightened up after the first two. There were a handful of pictures where he was mid-laugh or had his face rested on my neck and all his smile lines were visible. After hundreds of photos, Rox was finally happy.
The bartender comes in with multiple shots in hand. Jake distributes them.
"To rest of our lives," Rox shouts and we shout after her.
"That burns." I shake my head.
Jake shrugs, "I asked for the strongest one they have."
"Y/N, let's take a few, just us." Rox pulls me with her in front of the camera.
We stand beside each other with full smiles and look into the camera. Once the camera went off, she turns to me.
"Thanks for today."
"It was all Jake. Adrian and I just helped a bit with the details. And anything for you. You deserve the best."
"You will be my maid of honor, right?"
I open my mouth to say something, but nothing comes out. She laughs at me,
"Say something."
I pull her into a hug, "YES! I would love to."
We both pull back and jump together, "We're planning a wedding." Rox screams.
"This is going to be so much fun," I scream back.
"That reminds me, you guys are my best men." Jake's announcement brings both of them to a halt.
"I know Adrian for the longest. Bucky and I get along well."
They both look at each other.
"Thanks, man." Bucky says and Adrian jumps on Jake, "We're planning the best bachelor party!"
All the three high-five each other as Adrian starts planning the amount of alcohol involved.
Rox says 'wow' silently as I laugh at them.
As Adrian brainstorms about the bachelor party with Bucky giving inputs and Jake's wishes to keep it 'low key' are ignored, we finish taking pictures.
I look at Bucky, "Buck?"
He walks over, "Yeah?"
"Do you mind if we take one with just us? We don't get this dressed every day."
Bucky smiles, "Of course, Doll."
"Thanks. Rox, could you take one of us?" I hand her my phone and go stand beside Bucky. I look down at the sudden cold feeling on my waist. He got rid of the gloves.
I look at him and smile proudly. Bucky looks down and kisses my forehead. We both look back and give our widest smiles.
"Look at this candid." Rox brings the phone close to us and shows the picture.
"There are so many good ones. Thanks, dude."
"No problem." Rox walks to Jake and Adrian.
"I'll put these in our shared album." I post them on our shared album and save that picture as my wallpaper.
"If anyone needs us, we'll be at the bar. And we're not moving from there." With that, Jake leaves with Rox in hand and Adrian behind.
I encircle my arms around Bucky, "You must be tired. Let's go."
"You don't have to. I'm having a good time."
"That's nice. But I want to lay on our bed with you. I sleep better with you."
He cups my face in his hands and smiles against my lips, "I do too. Let's go."
Bucky and I bid our goodbyes and walk out of the bar.
"How did you come here?"
"Walking."
I hand him the car keys, "My laziness always benefits us at the end of the day."
He shakes his head, "It certainly does."

Together Forever Chap. 8
March 1933
Steve had never seen his twin sister as happy as she had been these last few years with Bucky. While he was happy that his sister and best friend were together he couldn't help but feel like the third wheel sometimes, he often would walk at a distance letting the couple enjoy their time together. Which is why Steve was surprised that he agreed to go to the theater with them to see King Kong for Bucky's birthday.
"Happy Birthday Buck" Steve said walking up to his bestfriend and handing him a gift. Bucky smiled at his friend and brought him in for a hug "Thanks Steve, you didn't have to, I know your Ma has been sick lately" Bucky said keeping his hand on his friends shoulder. Steve sighed and looked up at the apartment "A month ago they made her start working with tuberculosis patients, last week she started to not feel good" Steve said still looking at the apartment.
Just as Bucky was about to say something Y/n walked out the door in a blue dress, the same color blue as his eyes and a small box in her hands. To Bucky she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen, his heart skipped a beat when she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed his cheek "Hey birthday boy" she smiled seeing him blush. "Hey doll" he replied wrapping his arms around her waist.
They both blushed when Steve cleared his throat, Y/n put the box in Bucky's hands "Got you something" she said and put her hand over his when he went to open it "Not now, wait" she lightly smiled when he looked at her curiously.
Bucky couldn't help but laugh while during the movie whenever Y/n would get scared how she would grab onto him, he placed his arm protectively around her and gazed down at her with his piercing sky blue eyes. "I'll protect you doll" he whispered to her when she grabbed onto him again when King Kong roared.
It was later that night when the trio arrived back at their apartments, Steve went in his and Y/n's apartment after Bucky opened his gift, which was a book that he had wanted. After watching her twin go in Y/n looked at Bucky when she felt him looking at her. "Can I open my gift now doll?" He asked while pushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Yeah" she said softly. "I..... I hope you like it Buck" she added. "It's from my best girl, I'll love it" he said before opening up the box she had wrapped in newspaper.
Bucky's eyes went wide looking at his gift, he immediately looked at Y/n "Doll-" he started but she quickly cut him off "The chain was my dad's, Ma gave it to me and I..... I've been picking up extra work to get the rest" she said not meeting his eyes "if you look closely at it on one side is your initials, JBB and on the other side is mine" she added and watched as Bucky looked at both sides of the necklace. "Doll..... I love it" he grinned and Y/n let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding in. "Really?" She asked unsure but Bucky quickly ended her doubts when he kissed her cheek and told her "I'll always wear it, I'm never going to take it off."
July 1933
The last few months was hard for the Rogers, Steve and Y/n's mom would seem to get a little better but then get sick again. The twins were worried about their mom, since she wasn't able to work and Steve wasn't able to work either due to his abnormally small stature it left Y/n to work extra jobs so their rent got paid. Thankfully Winnifred helped with the food, whenever she cooked, she cooked enough for them as well. Winnifred and Becca would come over with baskets full of food, Sarah didn't eat much due to being so sick which left plenty of food for Steve and Y/n to eat throughout the week.
Steve hated not being able to contribute, he watched as his sister would come home late completely exhausted from working 2 to 3 jobs since they didn't have to go to school during the summer. Y/n always reassured him that he was a huge help by helping take care of their mom. She often worried that whatever illness their mom had that Steve would eventually get it because of his weakened immune system but luckily he hadn't and she hoped it stayed that way.
For the twins birthday Winnifred cooked them a cake, Sarah actually felt strong enough to be able to walk across the street to join the party. Steve and Y/n smiled as Sarah, Winnifred, Bucky, and Becca sang them Happy Birthday, together they blew out their candles. Everyone grabbed a plate excited to eat cake, Sarah surprised everyone when she actually ate all of hers.
When it was time for presents the group sat outside where there was a gentle breeze blowing. Sarah handed them her presents first, they each got a handknit sweater and scarf. They quickly hugged her tightly, knowing she had probably been working on them for months due to her health. "It isn't much, I'm sorry I couldn't give you more" she told them both with tears in her eyes. "We love them Ma, this is all we needed" they said in unison bringing a smile to her tired face.
Becca had given them a bracelet she had made, Winnifred had gifted Steve a new shirt and pants that she had sewn together, while Y/n opened up a new dress. Bucky gave Steve a new sketchbook and pencils for his drawings. "Thank you Buck" Steve said already thinking about what he wanted to draw.
Bucky was thankful when it started to rain, everyone made a run for the house, grabbing the food before it got ruined. With everyone busy he took Y/n's hand in his and snuck away to his room. "Buck what are you doing? We need to be helping" Y/n said slightly shivering from the cold rain. "Wanna give my best girl her birthday present" he said smiling when she blushed. He leaned down and kissed her, Y/n moved her arms to rest on the back of his neck, while Bucky's hands rested on her waist. They broke apart to catch their breath, both not being able to hold back their smile. "I like that gift" Y/n whispered making Bucky chuckle "That wasn't your gift doll but I liked it too" he winked at her before getting his present for her.
Y/n gasped when she opened the box that he handed her, a small gold bracelet sparkled up at her. Bucky cleared his throat making her glance up at him "It's beautiful Buck..... Thank you" she said softly. "Like the necklace you gave me, I had our initials engraved on both sides" he said and smiled as he watched her look at the heart. "And uh..... I...…. I chose a heart because you'll always have mine" he said blushing. Y/n wrapped her arms around Bucky again kissing him deeply, surprising Bucky but not for long as he wrapped his arms around her waist.

Bucky doesn’t know how you do it. Walking in front of the cameras, flashing lights, screaming fans and reporters—you do it like it’s nothing, but he can barely bring himself to force a smile and maybe stutter a few rambling sentences to the recording devices stuck in his face.
He can already hear the bustle of people outside, car horns honking impatiently for people crowding the street to get out of the way, the beat of helicopter blades soaring overhead, news outlets desperate to be the first to catch glimpses of the famed Avengers...
He’s only been in Los Angeles for a day and he already doesn’t like it.
You’re at the mirror, applying a favorite lipstick that always gets him riled up. He doesn’t know why he likes the color red on you so much, but this little splash of red against creamy olive skin goes perfectly with the floor-length dress, all ruby chiffon and satin, a split in the skirt of it that goes all the way up your thigh. Bucky eyes it hungrily as you turn away from the mirror and tuck your lipstick back into your little red clutch.
He’d rather stay here and mess around than go out and have to deal with… people.
Three sharp raps on your hotel door signal that it’s nearly time for you to go downstairs and join the others in the lobby. You barely acknowledge it, instead filtering through your little collection of necklaces. Bucky watches you compare pendants, assorted jewels and pearls, until you finally settle on a small silver chain with a diamond pendant.
“Babe?”
He stands when you hold the necklace out for him. He takes the nimble clasp and lets you adjust your hair so he can clasp it around your neck. It’s too easy to take advantage of your position, and he presses a kiss to the juncture of your shoulder and neck. You smell real good, like jasmine and vanilla, and it makes his heart skip a beat as blood decides to try and rush elsewhere—
“Mmm, nice try, mister.” You turn in his arms, winding your arms around his shoulders. “We have to go downstairs.”
Bucky grumbles. “Let’s just stay here. Say we got food poisoning from that sushi Stark got last night.”
“Definitely not.” You shake your head and press a light kiss to his lips that leaves a little red print. “You need to get used to these press events, baby. You can only miss so many before people start wondering where the famous Sergeant James Barnes has gone off to.”
“Sergeant James Barnes,” Bucky clarifies, running his hands down the back of your dress, “is busy trying to make some love to his girlfriend and it’s nobody else’s business.”
“It will be someone’s business if we turn up late. Again.”
“What can I say? I don’t like to rush things.”
You giggle and rub away the lipstick left behind on his lower lip. “When this event is all over, I promise I will make it very worth your while.” When he tenses, refusing to let you out of his arms, your eyes fill with sympathy. He really doesn’t want to go out there. “I’m not gonna leave your side,” you murmur, “I’ll stay where you can see me, we won’t be out there longer than an hour. I promise.”
He groans, letting you pull out of his embrace. “I hate reporters.”
“You don’t have to comment on anything,” you explain, “just stick by me, pose for the cameras, and then we’ll be onto the Q&A. And trust me, if I know Tony, he’ll be doing most of the talking.”
***
Bucky has to fight to shield his eyes from the glare of the setting sun reflecting off the buildings across the street. You loop your arm through his, walking at his pace as you trail behind Steve and Tony. Nat’s close behind, your reinforcement to make sure Bucky doesn’t turn and bolt back inside.
The instant clamoring swells up in a deafening wave the second they step outside. The rapid clicking of camera shutters, shouts from reporters, screams from excited fans… oh, God, fans. Nobody here is gonna like him, not after everything he’d done as the Winter Soldier has officially been made public…
“Calm,” you whisper in his ear, “they know we’re together, baby. It’s okay.”
Bucky flinches as several shouts of his name resound from twenty feet away, mixes of “James” and “Sergeant” and “Barnes” that make his head spin. He ignores them, offering tight smiles and hanging back with his hands tucked in his pockets when you decide to approach the reporters. He watches closely, eyeing the way you smile and practice your little flirty routine as you answer the questions thrown in your face.
A flash of silver and red catches his eye. He turns his head and spies a gaggle of people huddled beside one of the metal barricades, some with their phones out—the red had apparently come from a phone case. They’re cheering and waving, and he raises his hand in a curious wave before turning his gaze away. You’re finishing up with the reporters, and you blow a little kiss to one of the cameras before sauntering back to him, leaving Natasha to fend for herself.
“Looks like those people over there really like you.” You let Bucky wind an arm around your waist. “Wanna go say hi?”
Bucky shrugs. “I don’t know.”
“Baby, c’mon,” you plead, “it’s good to let the public get to know you. Besides, having fans is a good thing.”
He eyes the group suspiciously. They’re mostly women, some teenagers sprinkled in, cheeks flushed with excitement at the prospect of seeing him… not Tony, not Steve… him.
“You’re in their history books,” you murmur, “they get to meet a hero.”
Bucky swallows thickly. “How, uh… how do I talk to them?”
A little smirk crosses your face. “Remember the first time you flirted with me? Bring all that sweet charm right back up and they’ll love you forever.”
He blushes hard when you rub your hand up his arm. “Are you sure?”
“Well, you got me to stick around,” you reply, “pretty sure a couple of idolizing teens is way easier.”
Bucky takes a deep breath and glances over at where Tony’s scribbling frantically on posters and pictures held out by what look like hundreds of fans. “And what if they want me to sign stuff?”
You reach into your clutch and pull out a metallic gold Sharpie. “Do that cute loopy thing you sign all your things with.”
His shoulders roll back, and he adjusts the button of his jacket—subconsciously, most likely—and you rise up on the toes of your four-inch heels to nuzzle his cheek before giving him a stealthy pat on the ass and sending him on his way. Bucky swallows any nerves that creep up into his throat as each step takes him closer to the group of excited girls, who only bounce and whisper excitedly as he approaches.
“Hi, ladies,” he says, trying to keep the nervous flutter in his voice under control. The chorus of “hi!” and “ohmygod!” that fills his ears in reply makes his cheeks burn, and he uncaps the pen, reaching out to sign a handmade poster that reads TEAM BARNES.
It’s a full five minutes of signing his initials, JBB, over and over again. He manages to engage better than he thought he would, even managing a few quick seconds of eye contact with several young women who bat their eyelashes and blush furiously as he delivers winks and lopsided smiles. The sudden appearance of an infant named after him literally takes the words out of his mouth, and with the mother’s permission he reaches over to let the curious baby grip onto his right index finger. It’s quite touching, considering he’s been wanting to talk with you about babies for a while.
By the time he’s done, you’ve moved a long ways down the red carpet to occupy yourself with a one-on-one camera interview. He feels surprisingly light and happy, and he waits patiently for you to take notice of his presence and invite him in. The reporter talking to you blushes, apparently excited to get him in as well.
“And we’re joined by Sergeant James Barnes,” she says, as the cameraman turns to bring her into the frame, “so, Sergeant, it’s been a while since you’ve made a public appearance like this. How are you finding it?”
Bucky’s brain struggles to find the right words quick enough. “Took some getting used to, I’m still, uh…” he shoots you a quick glance, as if to make sure what he’s sharing is okay. When you give him an encouraging smile, he continues. “I’m still adjusting to this kind of life. Fortunately, I got this one—” he loops his arm around your waist, fingers splaying out against your hip, “to help me out. She’s been real good to me.”
***
“Goddamn.”
Bucky slumps back against the mattress, tipping his head back as you drape yourself next to him, a sweaty thigh slung over his hips. You’re panting hard, muscles still tensing and trembling from the last near-hour of enthusiastic lovemaking.
“I’ll say,” you reply, running a palm over his bare chest. “So, you had fun?”
He grins, looping an arm around your shoulders. “It’s always fun with you.”
“I meant the press.” You laugh and squirm a little closer. “You look like you had fun with those people.”
He smiles, cheeks flushing. “Someone named their baby after me.”
“Aww, that’s sweet.” You press a kiss to the side of his neck. “I wish I’d seen that… imagining you with a baby does things to me.”
Bucky chuckles. “I’ve been meaning to ask if you wanted one.”
“What, a baby?” You sigh and trail the tip of your finger over his lower lip. “I was thinking about it, but with what we do… are you sure you’d wanna have a baby?”
In response, he rolls on top of you, nudging your thighs apart to make room for him. “I want to,” he confesses in a whisper, lips brushing against yours. “Besides, even if it takes a while, it’s fun to try.”
Your arms wind around his neck, pulling him down into a deeper kiss. “I guess you’re thinking of trying right now?”
Bucky glances at the digital clock on the nightstand. “It’s only ten,” he says, “I’m willing to try all night.”

eleutreromania ○ an intense and irresistible desire for freedom
Author: Dina. @softboibarnes
Word Count: 1527
Pairings: Bucky Barnes x female reader
Warnings: none.
Summary: a deeper look into a web of lies......
A/N: I finally got the idea of how to continue this. I’ve been so lost of inspiration tbh, but then it just appeared. I hope you enjoy!
masterpost
Tumblr media
Months passed, and in those months, you learned just how vile some people could be. You had never expected that you would be talked down to by someone who seemed so interested in you, and it made your heart clench in your chest.
The first month after the date, James had asked you for multiple reconciliation dates, to which you all answered no. You agreed with yourself, that there was just no way in hell he had changed his set of mind. After his countless attempts, he finally gave up and left you alone.
Or so you thought.
It was barely two months after your first day at the office when the first rumors started going around about you. Something about you and the technician, who you didn’t even know. You heard it in the women’s restroom where you were hiding out for the lunch break, the cramped office becoming too much for you.
“Did you hear about Y/n and Loki? I heard they’ve been canoodling since she got here.” You heard a voice pip up from outside the stall. Your head shot up and your brows furrowed at the confession. You heard another voice speak up shortly after.
“God, she’s over all the guys at this place. First James, then Steve, I think I heard that too, and now Loki. God she’s such a slut.” The two women laughed in that annoyingly nasal way. You sighed, your eyes filling with tears yet again.
This was, apparently, your new every day. Sitting in the restroom, iced coffee in hand, just minding your own business. Listening to gossip, from the witches who had so few braincells, that gossiping was all they could do in their spare time.
It only got worse. Apparently, after a week, you had also seduced the college intern, Peter, who you had barely ever spoken a word to. Then, unimaginably, you had shagged Mr. Tony Stark himself to get a promotion.
You feared you would never find out where the rumors came from, until you a month later found a breach in the office system, leading you to a thread of mails, sent by none other than [email protected].
With a swift command P, you finally had some kind of relief from the countless hours you’d already spent in Mr. Stark’s office, trying to address every blatant lie that had been told about you. And now that you finally had your proof, you still halted outside his office doors.
You sighed as you looked down at the papers in your hands, biting your lip to prevent the tears from falling on your cheeks. You were standing there, proof in hands, yet doubting what you were about to do. You know he could potentially get fired, which delighted you. But still, you found yourself feeling bad.
Your fist rapping against the foggy glass door on its own accord pulled you out of your mental battle. You heard him call for you to enter, and you took a few deep breaths before doing so. Once you stood in front of him, your heart was beating so loud in your chest you barely could make out the words he was speaking.
“What can I do for you, y/n?” his warm brown eyes were encouraging you to talk. You felt the heat rise in your cheeks as he took you in, eyes falling to what you had brought along.
“Mr. Stark…” you took a deep breath before handing him the stack of papers you had been carrying. “I wanted to tell you about something that has been going on for the past two or three months.” You watched as he started flipping through the papers you had handed him, his eyes roaming over the letters.
“Sit down please, y/n, I’m guessing you want to go into details with this.” you nodded before sitting down in front of him, letting out a breath you didn’t know you were holding. “How did these mails come into your possession?”
“I stumbled upon a small breach in the firewall when I was doing checkouts on the main account. It was like an anonymous tip email – you could send an email from your own and it would be sent out to selected company emails.” You explained and watched as Tony nodded.
He cleared his throat before signaling you to find it on his stationary. You quickly typed in the passwords and soon after found the small breach, right where you’d found it last time. You retreated back to your chair, and watched as Tony scrolled through the site before closing it down again.
“So, I want to hear your side of the story. And please, start from the beginning, where you think this has its roots.”
With a sigh, you told Tony everything. He watched you as you spoke, telling him about your first week, the date with James, the way he’d overstepped your boundaries and the many times he’d asked you out for a rebound date. How rumors had started to surface, spreading like wildfire throughout the office, and how you’d just a few minutes ago discovered where the rumors originally had come from.
He looked down at the papers, before flipping through, landing on one, before he started to read out loud.
Y/n Y/l/n has taken desperation to new heights with the idea of a promotion lodged so far into her brain, she’s willing to ruin a family in order to get it. I’m not mentioning names, but a certain Stark has been the victim of her latest sexcapade.
Your chin quivered as you heard the words coming out of Tony’s mouth, making it all a little more real. You didn’t know what to say, so with your eyes trained on the floor in front of you, the embarrassment becoming way too much for you to handle, you clamped up like an oyster.
You felt gross, dirty, even though you knew it was a lie. You heard the papers glide over each other, before Tony cleared his throat, making you look up at him. You could clearly see the way he was thinking everything over, and how he was considering his options.
He put the papers down on his desk, before he leaned over the table, elbows resting against the mahogany and chin on the heels of his hands. “Y/n, I would like to hear what you expect me to do about this?” His eyes were friendly, welcoming, and you found yourself trusting him. Before you had the chance to stop yourself, you caught yourself saying,
“I don’t want anyone fired.” With a sigh, you watched as Tony’s features softened. “I don’t want anyone to get fired because of this. It’s blatant lies. I just want… To hold them, him, accountable for what he’s been saying about me.”
“Y/n, I’m going to ask you this, for the sake of these papers. I know it’s personal, and it’s completely alright if you don’t want to tell me.” You nodded, possibly already knowing what he was going to ask you. “Have you had any relations with the men mentioned in these statements?”
You exhaled through your nose, understanding that if just one of the statements were true, some others would be as well.
“No. The only relation I had was with Barnes during my first week. I don’t even think you can call that a relation.” You fiddled your fingers as you awaited his next words, heart beating so loudly you were afraid that Tony would hear it.
“Alright.” Tony straightened himself before he flipped through the pages again, finding his highlighter and marking every sender on the different mails. “I’m going to go through these mails with Barnes. Would you rather I kept it a secret, that you came with these?” Tony looked up and watched as you nodded.
“Very well then.” His eyes fell back onto the papers, his fingers grabbing a pen before scribbling something in his god-awful handwriting. “I’ll have a talk with Barnes.” You let out a relieved sigh, offering him a small smile.
“I can’t promise you there won’t be consequences for him.” Tony wrote another note, before handing it to you. “Most likely a time out and time off for him. A month? Two?” Tony asked you, and you looked down at the note in your hand.
Barnes
Restricted mail access
Starting today
Ending when I say so
You nod, before whispering out a “I guess one month is alright.”
“Great. Will you hand that to Mrs. Potts on the way down? I’ll make sure there will be put an end to this, alright?” Tony rose from his seat and walked around his desk, standing just a little taller than you as he led you to the door. “I want my company to be a safe space. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. You did the right thing.”
“Thank you, Mr. Stark.” You smiled at him before heading back to your workstation, handing Mrs. Potts the note Mr. Stark had given you on your way back. You could already feel the tension lightening as you passed Barnes’ workstation, noting that he hadn’t come in today.

Right Under My Nose | 2.5
A Sleeping Situation
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader (Background Steve Rogers x Natasha Romanoff)
Summary: When you lie to your mum about having a date to your brother’s wedding, things spiral swiftly and ridiculously. Suddenly, your thrust into fake-dating your best friend, and everything begins to change.
Fake-dating and bed-sharing? What did I do, bathe in clichés?
A/n: A drabble, because I can. Let’s call it chapter 2.5. I had a sort-of average day today so I wrote this to try and cheer myself up. It’s nothing but fluff, but when do I ever write anything but fluff anyway? I hope you all enjoy this little surprise update. The next real chapter will be out this weekend and I think it’s a pretty good one. Let me know what you think!!
Tumblr media
(this is a cute gif that has nothing to do with the drabble lmao)
You got back to the room pretty late––around 11––but that didn’t stop you from sitting on the couch binge watching sitcoms for another few hours. In the end it was you who stood up first, stretching back with a yawn and glancing over at the bed. The bed. One bed. Okay.
“Welp, I’m going to get some sleep,” you mumbled, running your hands over your face as if to wipe away the fatigue. “Uhhh… you prefer a particular side?”
“What?” he frowns at the question obviously confused, before catching your gaze and blinking lamely at the queen-sized bed. “Oh.”
You started towards the bed, pulling the decorative pillows off it as he tried to process the situation. “What is it Barnes? Scared of sleeping next to me? I’m pretty sure I don’t snore.”
You were acting confident, despite the awkwardness you felt. Sure, You had lived with Bucky and Steve in college, and sure, you had been camping with them when you were young, but that was the thing – Steve was always there. The room between yours. The sleeping bag between yours. Steve was always this protective layer of older brother. You couldn’t help but feel a little weird about sharing a bed with Bucky.
He chuckled lightly as he stood up from the couch, switching off the tv and joining you at the end of the bed. “Not scared – I just figured I’d sleep on the couch but, that’d be dumb. We’re like, best friends. Sleeping together– I mean, sleeping in the same bed shouldn’t be too weird.”
You chuckled too, glad he was feeling a bit awkward about the whole situation. At least you were in this together.
“Left side,” he said, after a few seconds pause. “Closer to the door – easier to escape if you try anything at 3am.”
You scoffed at that, glaring amusedly at him. “You’re not that irresistible, Barnes.”
With a shared laugh, you both moved for your suitcases.
“I’ll change in the bathroom – You change out here. I’ll knock before I come out,” he mumbled, voice gentle. The door to the bathroom shut behind him and you quickly stripped, pulling an over-sized t-shirt on and some shorts underneath.
Bucky had simply stripped off his shirt and put on some sweatpants, hoping you wouldn’t mind his shirtlessness. He usually slept naked, but he figured that might be a bit of an over-step. He waited a few more minutes before knocking on the door, chuckling to himself about how strange it felt to be knocking with the intention of leaving the bathroom instead of going in.
“All good!” He heard you call through the door and pushed it open, finding you already sitting under the covers, scrolling through your phone.
You glanced up it him and had to forcefully stop yourself from doing an almost-comical double-take when you discovered him shirtless. Sure, you’d seen him shirtless before, but never when he was about to get into bed beside you. You snuck another look as he pulled the covers back, unable to help yourself. Black sweatpants hung low on his hips, showing off his somehow perfectly sculpted abdomen. A line of dark hair peeked out and trailed up to his bellybutton, and suddenly your mouth felt a little dry.
You tore your eyes away again, scrolling through Instagram without actually seeing any of the posts. You tried to blink away the memory of his body, but when you looked over at him again, his broad shoulders and toned chest were still exposed and you swallowed a lump in your throat, shrinking down into the soft mattress.
You knew he was an aesthetically pleasing man, but watching him get into bed beside you brought it to a whole new level.
Jesus, you needed to go to sleep.
You plugged your phone in beside the bed flicked off the lamp, adjusting under the covers so you were laying down. His bare arm brushed against yours as he layed down too. You both opted to ignore it.
“G’night, girlfriend,”
You smiled into the darkness, a breathy laugh escaping your lips at his words.
“Goodnight, boyfriend.”
It hadn’t taken you long to fall asleep – it was almost 2am by the two you had both gotten into bed and this was a good hotel – it was a really nice mattress.
You woke up to the sun – bright rays shining through the large window, brightness filling the darkest corners of your sleepy mind and dragging you back into consciousness. Warmth spread across your back, a comfortable weight across your torso, the feeling of light breath on the back of your neck.
You quickly remembered where you were. And there was only one person whose arms could be around you right now.
Your hand was on his chest, the tips of your fingers brushing against the skin at the top of his chest, warm and soft. You could feel each heavy beat of his heart against the palm of your hand and each time it seemed to send a shiver through your entire body.
One of his hands was tangled in your hair, cradling you close to his chest whilst his other arm pulled you tightly against him by your waist. Finally, you looked up at his face. Your head moved slowly, eyes moving past his jawline to find his closed eyelids.
Maybe it was because you hadn’t been with someone in so long or maybe it was because Bucky made you feel comfortable, but you found yourself wanting to stay there.
You tried to blink away any sleepiness and slowly began to convince your muscles to move, first your legs, pulling them slowly from where they were tangled with his. The rest of your body followed, slowly as you possibly could, you slipped out of his arms, gently lifting his limbs off you and holding your breath in hopes of not disturbing him.
When you were finally free, you sat on the edge of the bed for a moment, a yawn escaping your lips as you dared to glance over at him once more. His brow was furrowed, and his lips twitched almost imperceptibly. He adjusted on the bed, rolling onto his stomach with a quiet groan before his breaths fell even again.
You made your way into the bathroom, splashing your face with cold water and studying yourself in the mirror.
“Get it together,” you whispered, with a gentle shake of your head.
Is it too early to start drinking?
DID YA LIKE IT??

HBC Book Club Reviews
Tumblr media
This week has brought us a crop of fantastic fic rec’s which we hope you will give a read to and show the wonderful authors some love and support.  Each week we will choose four fic’s to review.  Please help us by submitting the stories you would like see reviewed and given some love to, to:                                [email protected]  or submitting an ask to the @the-ss-horniest-book-club
The heat-scale above is how we chose our fic each week.  One story from each level will be read and reviewed, please indicate where on the scale the story you are reccing will place.  Also please only rec completed stories for review.
So, to get us started, here are the first four fic’s, in order from Blazing to Sweet!
Tumblr media
Two Can Keep A Secret
Author:  @cametobuyplums
Destroyer Chris x Reader
Blazing
Cametobuyplums has done it again with Two can keep a secret. My pussy is over here begging for Reprieve! I went in know it would be good because it was written my the smut goddess. Chris was written perfectly. Gruff and punishing. And let’s not forget all the fucking ring kink that’s got me screaming. My favorite line in the story was the last but I’m not going to give away spoilers. Fuck, if I could get dicked down by Chris like this I might join a drug gang too.  Fizz’s stories are all smutty gold. Synopsis: the reader is in a gang and finds out Chris is a cop. He uses his dick and dominant personality to keep her quiet. Rating a 10/10 on the blazing scale.
Review by @buckmesideways22
This fic is dripping with sin, and I love it! It most definitely deserves the spot of blazing because this fic is so hot it's on fire! There is not enough Destroyer!Chris content and @cametobuyplums is keeping us kids fed, while simultaneously making us thirsty. This fic makes me shiver with delight, every dominant action and word from Chris has my submissive side aching with want and to please. The nicknames, the dirty talk, the roughness, @cametobuyplums knows how to rile a girl up in all the best ways. Thank you so much for this fic and for all the fantastic writing you supply us with.

One Day We Won’t Have to Be Scared
Tumblr media
Author:  @paraxdisepink
Bucky x Steve
Spicy
This fic is hot, but it also has its moments where it pulls on my heartstrings. Anyone who knows me knows that my main ship is not Stucky (how can I ship Bucky with anyone but myself, I mean c'mon!), however this fic nuzzled it's way into my heart! I also LOVE that the author addressed an issue with pressured consent (bless you for that and how you did it, it felt natural within the fic, but it also made me super happy). There are a ton of little things I love about this fic, but for the sake of brevity, and so I don't spoil anything, I will just say this: read it curled up in bed, be prepared to awe out loud and for things to get hot. Also, thank you @buckmesideways22 for finding this and making it a book club read.
Review by @littledarlinhavefaithinme
I loved this story, even though it wasn't something I would normally gravitate towards. It was a great back and forth of pre serum Steve and Bucky in the 30s and modern day Stucky. Steve and Bucky, friends enjoying a night out before they are living on the streets, are approached at a bar in the 1930s to take photos for cash they very much need to make ends meet, but they never thought they’d get out like they have now in the modern day. The author has painted a perfect picture with her words in every scene. A delicate balance of jokes, angst, and tender moments. I especially loved the scene at the bar and their initial meeting of Franz. Bucky feeling he needs to be there to protect Steve even with his own discomfort in the situation (there it is Steve once again showing he isn’t the goody two shoes everyone has painted him to be as Captain America, and Bucky following that little guy from Brooklyn into trouble). The sex although not under the best of circumstances, as they had to be coerced into it, was beautifully written to show the raw emotion neither knew before that moment. The line about Bucky and Steve’s adventure into tumblr being a “scary look into the modern female mind.” I felt like it was a call out to the HBC.

The Very Thought
Author:  @caitfairwrites
Bucky x Reader
Mild
This story perfectly captures the ethereal moments between heartbeats, the style a work of art in painting such a clear and evocative widow into the heart and soul.  You can’t read this and not be moved by the raw emotion as you’re carefully guided through a series of encounters which deeply tie two people together.  It is a sensual and deeply intimate look at love and sex, of two people finally finding their place in each other.   I have cried every time I’ve read it, it’s one of the most beautifully written pieces I’ve ever encountered. Highly recommended must read for all Bucky fans.
Review by @cchellacat
An absolutely gorgeous picture of 40s Bucky and his girl told through their stolen moments together both prewar and after-war (AU where Bucky comes home injured). Everything about this is poetry. It echoes back themes during each of the six encounters that could make you cry with how beautifully it's written. Read it with a hand on your heart, to keep it from beating right out of your chest.

Our Last Day
Author:  @sunflowers-and-bucky
Bucky x Reader
Sweet
Our Last Day is about Bucky and the Readers last day before he ships out. It hit me right in the feels the first time I read it as it is laced with just enough emotion, teasing, and love. It starts out by painting a lazy Sunday, not unlike the one you would normally have, but as the day progresses the knowledge that Bucky is leaving and quite possibly never returning looms in the back of your mind. Their conversation walking to the docks is a perfect balance of confident dreamer and realist and you can feel the moment weighing the reader down as they inch closer. I felt it in my soul when reader said, “You know, if you die I’ll kill you.”  Leading to a beautiful tender moment from Bucky.
Review by @marvelousmeggi
Our last day was heart warming and heart breaking all at the same time because we know Bucky’s fare. The story is about the reader and Bucky’s last day before he was heading out to war (love me so 40’s JBB). It really showcases a loving relationship between Buck and the reader and you feel the readers emotions. Thanks Sunflowers and Bucky you made the tiddy queen tear up and be all soft. My favorite line was, “if you die, I’ll kill you.” It’s a great read and I would totally read it again.

“You love me as if I deserve you“
Tumblr media
“You love me as if I deserve you.” with Bucky? And if you could, please make it a bit angsty!!
Bucky Barnes x Reader
(Gif not mine) (Requests are open)
1. You love me as if I deserve you
Words: 1383
-
He wasn't awoken by an alarm or rays of sunlight but by you peppering his face with kisses. It was the best way to wake up, he's discovered. And in a way you are, at times like this, both an alarm and the pure personification of sunlight. You would scoff if he told you that but he firmly believes it's true.
You were now in an exclusive romantic relationship and you had been for some time and you were just... exquisite. Bucky would never have dreamed this would happen to him, with you, but he thanked whatever god may still be listening every day.
As it is, you were gently pressing kisses to his unshaven cheeks, patiently waiting for him to join you in the land of the living.
"Good morning, sleepy-head," you whispered.
"What time is it?" he rumbled, without opening his eyes.
"Still early, don't worry," you replied. "But you need to get up."
"Hmmm," he hummed, "You know, I would consider it but I'm just not sure it's worth it, you see." He teased you, a grin pulling at the corners of his mouth.
"Oh yes?"
There was a challenge in your voice and he couldn't to see what you were going to do, he was sure you'd surprise him. Don't you always?
You didn't let him down. The next thing he knew, you were swinging a leg over him to straddle his lap.
His eyes flew open to see you perched happily atop him, a certain air of triumph about you, framed by the soft sunlight peeking through the gap in the curtains, wearing only his dress shirt from last night and a smirk.
What could he possibly have done in his life to warrant this? Surely nothing, he wasn't worthy of you. Not by a long shot. So how in heaven's name did he get this lucky?
"Is this enough incentive for you, Mr. Barnes?" you taunted, breathily.
"Oh, I suppose so." He said, sighing a long-suffering sigh, the effect of which is only slightly ruined by his wide smile.
You beamed back, pleased with yourself, and leaned forward so you were resting your chin on top of your hands on his chest.
He thought he will never tire of looking at your beautiful face.
"And to what do I own this rather pleasurable wakeup call this morning, my dear?" He asked quietly, not wanting to disturb the peacefulness of the moment, bringing his hands to rest on your waist.
"Well, first of all, I couldn't wait to see you." You said, shrugging as it that were obvious, evidently not knowing that you're words made his heart swell with love for you. "Secondly," you continued without missing a beat, "I have something for you."
"You have something for me?" He repeated stupidly, a little lost in the endless color of your eyes.
How are they so lovely?
You giggled and Bucky tried to commit the sound to memory. It sounds like happiness.
"Yes, silly. Wait right here."
All of a sudden, you were gone from on top of him, jogging from the room, his shirt falling just to mid-thigh. He craned his neck, trying to make the most of the view before you're gone. He may be the luckiest man on the face of the earth but he's not stupid.
He stretched his arms above his head, groaning softly into the empty room. He hopes you wouldn't be gone long. He cherished these early morning moments with you just the two of you, close and warm and happy.
But luckily he doesn't even had time to miss you before you were running back into the room with something hidden behind your back. You quickly reclaimed your place straddling his lap and his hands reclaim your place at your hips and the world rights itself.
You looked at him for a moment, your cheeks a little red from your hurrying to and from the room, and bite your lip. His eyes zero in on the action, and he wondered if you'd let him get away with a few good morning kisses before you gave him whatever you wanted to give him. But you moved too quickly for him, pulling your hands out from behind your back and placing a small, square box topped with an even smaller red bow on his chest.
Bucky went a little cross eyed trying to look at it and you laughed.
"Here, sit up and open it!"
You moved off of his lap and back to your side of the bed, settling into his side while he automatically put an arm around you, doesn’t even notice he did it because it feels so natural, and picked up the little box to peer at it curiously.
"What's this, babe?"
"Well, you have to open it to find out, dummy!"
He rolled his eyes, pretending to be annoyed with your teasing, while he was truly anything but because you were next to him in bed and of course you could call him whatever you wanted, and you squirmed under his arm, excited.
He pulled the tiny bow off the top of the box and quickly sticks it to your nose before you could protest. You huffed in surprise and then laughed again, pulling the bow off and swatting him playfully on the chest. Bucky chuckled, pleased with his quick reflexes, usually you were faster, the little minx, and he opened the box.
Inside were a pair of gorgeous, old, gold cufflinks. His grandfather's cufflinks.
"Oh, (Y/N)," he breathed, stunned.
"It took me a lot to find them, I spent so many days chasing a guy that owned them. Do you like the surprise?" You were babbling a little, which he thought was incredibly endearing, like pretty much everything else you did. How could you think he won't love the surprise? He was never going to know.
"Oh, (Y/N), I absolutely love--"
He stopped abruptly, squinting at the cufflinks. What were those markings there? Oh. Oh, you had little black JBB engraved on them and that was easily the sweetest thing he had ever seen.
"Do you like the engravings? I know it's a little heavy handed but I thought they were cute. You can always get them taken off it you want. Do you like them?"
"Babe, no, of course I love them, sweetheart. Thank you so much." He breathed, still amazed. "But what's the occasion?"
"Occasion?" You wrinkled your nose, confused.
"Yes, occasion."
"There is no occasion," you said simply. "I just wanted to. And because I knew they are important to you." You shrugged as if it was the most normal thing in the world, to give such a thoughtful, personalized gift to your brainwashed assassin boyfriend for no apparent reason. You just wanted to. God.
He gently closed the box, put it carefully on the nightstand, and then yanked you into his arms, burying his face in your shoulder, willing himself not to cry, because he had to at least pretend he was a grown man not completely unarmed by a small token of his girlfriend’s love, didn't he?
"Bucky!" You squealed, delighted. "Wait, what's wrong?"
You pulled back from him, putting a hand on his cheek. Oh, he was putty under your hands when you did that, and you knew it.
"You do like them, don't you?"
"Of course, (Y/N), I love them, thank you."
"Then what's wrong?" You asked, baffled.
"It's just... (Y/N) I...” he sighed, knowing you wouldn't like what he was about to say. “You… you love me as if I deserve you.” he whispered raggedly, pulling you as close as he could. “Why are you even with me? I should leave so you can meet someone better, you deserve so much better.
"Bucky, don’t. I love you and I don’t want anyone else but you." You whispered back, putting both hands on his face now. There were tears gathering in your eyes and you placed your forehead against his.
"I love you because we deserve each other. Please try to remember that. You’ve changed, for good.“
And you kissed him. He kissed you back fervently, trying to convey the depth of his love for you. He thought you may understand because you sighed into his mouth and sinked down against him, smiling against his lips.
And he offered a promise to whatever god cares enough to listen that he were going to spend the rest of his life trying to deserve you.

It's the middle of the night when I know the babies are coming. So cliché.
Contractions have been off and on for a few days, and it was only nerves that made me ignore them, soothing Bucky before we go to bed, telling him that it can't possibly be time. But here I am with the clock reading after midnight, holding my belly and feeling the muscles tighten, and then relax, and the babies move - and then eight minutes later it happens again.
I stare at the red numbers on the clock.
Eight minutes apart for the first hour.
Seven minutes apart for the second.
Six minutes.
That's enough for me. I gently shake Bucky awake, my fingers linking softly with his metal ones as he stares at me, sleepy and then suddenly wide awake.
It's time.

Wrong Number
Tumblr media
Pairings: Bucky Barnes x Clint Barton
Summary: Clint texts Nat his secret desires for a certain super soldier, only he’s off by one digit...
Word Count: 2577
“Hey Steve, can I ask you something?”
“Yeah Buck, what’s up?”Steve replies without looking up from his book.
“Umm, what do you say back when someone texts you ‘I just want to lick him from the bottom up or maybe the top down. IDK I just want to lick him!!’?”
Steve slowly lowers his book. “Excuse me?”he asks. If he raises his eyebrows any higher they’ll disappear into his hairline. “Who the hell is that text from?”
“I have no idea. I don’t recognize the number. It’s obviously a mistake. But…” Bucky gets a mischievous grin on his face. “...what if I have a little fun with whoever it is, can’t hurt right?”
Steve has been trying to get Bucky to open up more. He’s been so down and depressed lately it seems nothing can make him smile. That little grin he just gave was the first he’s seen in a very long time. Maybe playing along with this wrong number could be a welcome distraction.
“You don’t know them and they don’t know you. Sure, have a little fun. Might do you some good, pal.”
“I don’t know what do say. Got any suggestions? I don’t want to scare them away with one text.”
“You’re asking me?? This sounds more like a job for Tony, or Nat.”
“Oh no! I’m not getting them involved. I’ll think of something.” Bucky heads back up to his floor. Maybe if he has a some privacy he can think of something good to reply. He’s way out of his depth here. He’s not even sure if this is coming from a male or a female. His response needs to be just as vague if he wants to make this into a game and amuse himself for a little while, at least.
He flops down on the bed, makes himself comfortable and unlocks his phone. Okay, here goes nothing, he thinks.
JBB: You can start from either direction but I’m sure you’ll want to linger when you reach the middle
Now to wait and see if they take the bait. He’s already second guessing himself. What is he going to gain from this except possibly embarrassing a total stranger. Then again, if you’ve never met the person how embarrassed can they possibly get?
He didn’t have to wait long for a response. The notification made him jump slightly. He wasn’t expecting it to come that quickly. He actually felt a little nervous as he swiped the screen.
Wrong Number: OMG you have no idea. What I wouldn’t do to see what he’s packin.
JBB: Thought about that a lot have you?
Well, they obviously still think they contacted a friend. Now to try to figure out if this is a woman, or better yet, a guy. This could be even more fun if it turns out to be a guy. He has to think of some way to get them to reveal, or at least hint at, their gender. Maybe the next response will give him something to work with.
WN: You know damn well I have. Not like it’s a secret how ridiculously hot he is.
JBB: Why don’t you just tell him how hot you think he is? What could possibly happen?
Maybe the answer to that question will give him some insight. Although, he’s not really sure what he’ll do with the knowledge if he figures out this person’s gender. What’s he gonna do if it’s a guy, ask if he wants to find out what he’s packin’ next? Yeah, that’s not creepy at all. He’s so out of practice with this flirting thing he’ll probably end up embarrassing himself anyway.
WN: WHAT? Did you really just ask that?? He could beat the living shit outta me. THAT’S what could happen!!!
And there it is! It’s a guy. It better be a guy. If it’s not then the ridiculously hot guy is also a giant piece of shit that potentially beats on women. Getting in the middle of something like that would be unfortunate. Bucky would have to seek out Hot Guy and beat the shit out of him just because.
WN: I mean come on now the guy is a maniac and a little unhinged, but so goddamn sexy. That arm… and those thighs! At least if he tried to crush me to death with those, I could go out happy
Arm? So Hot Guy only has one arm? Or maybe one arm is tattooed and this guy has a tattoo kink. So many questions and really no way to ask them. This is going from fun to frustrating pretty quickly.
JBB: Sounds like a good way to go. But, maybe he thinks the same thing about you. Ever think of that possibility?
WN: Did you hit your head really hard in training today? Should I come get you? Do you need medical attention?
JBB: I’ll take that as a no then.
WB: You’re acting weird. I’ll see you at breakfast. If you wake up, ya know, being concussed and all. Night
Damnit! There goes that. When whoever this is meets their friend for breakfast they’re going to know they’ve been texting the wrong person. Guess I’m in for some pissed off messages tomorrow morning, Bucky thinks to himself and he stares at the last text. Oh well, one more message won’t hurt, right?
JBB: Well it was nice talkin to ya. Good luck with Hot Guy. Night
There was no response after that. He must have finally scared him away. It might have been fun if he could have kept it going for a few days but, come morning, the deception will be revealed.
He sighs, puts his phone on the nightstand and rolls over. After a couple hours of tossing and turning he finally falls asleep.
~~~~~~~
When he wakes the next morning he feels like he didn’t sleep at all. He feels like he lost a friend, which is insane. He talked to this guy for 10 minutes, has zero clue who he is or what he looks like. Maybe it’s just the fact that he had someone, that wasn’t Steve, to talk to. Trying his hand at talking to someone outside the Tower seemed like a good idea. If he ever wants to be able to go check out the city by himself, and not scare everyone with his murder stare, he needs to work on his people skills.
Bucky drags himself out of bed and takes a quick shower before heading down to the common area kitchen. Steve will already be there. Questions about the mystery texter will probably be forthcoming, Great just what I want to deal with first thing in the morning. As soon as he sees the smirk on Steve’s face when he reaches the kitchen he blurts out “There’s not enough coffee on the planet to deal with you in the morning, Rogers.”
“Oh come on, Buck. Out with it. What happened?”
“Nothing. Just drop it. Here comes Clint. I don’t need him chiming in.”
“Uuuuuuugh! Coffee. Now.” Clint groans as he makes his way to the coffee maker, He doesn’t even bother with a cup; he starts drinking right from the pot. How does this guy function on his own? He seriously needs a handler. Just as Bucky finishes that thought Natasha comes strolling in. Nevermind, there’s his handler now.
“Seriously, Barton? There are other people that live here. Can you try to not be so disgusting this early in the morning?” Nat scolds the acher like he’s her child. Not that he doesn’t act like one on a regular basis. It’s actually kind of adorable if Bucky were to think about it, which he tries not to, He has a hard time around people as it is. Attempting a relationship would only end in disaster. But he has to admit he’s caught himself checking out the archer’s biceps, a few times, when they’ve been training.
“Gimme a break, Nat. I had a weird night. No thanks to you.”
“Me, what did I do?” she asks. ”You’re the one that said you had something to get off your chest. When I didn’t hear from you I figured you changed your mind.”
“WHAT? I was texting you. You responded! What the hell are you talking about?” Clint is completely confused. How can Nat say he didn’t text her. If it wasn’t her that he was talking to, who the hell was it?
“Oh Barton, you simple creature. You broke your phone again, didn’t you?” she asks.
“Yeah, so what if I did? I know your number by heart. 201-555-669…” Clint starts but gets interrupted.
“Nine,” Bucky finishes. It all makes sense now. Arm, training, maniac, unhinged. He looks at Clint with a mixture of shock and hurt.
“Oh my god! NO!” Clint shouts and runs from the room as fast as he can.
Steve and Natasha look at each other then they both look at Bucky. Natasha is the first to ask the question that’s on both of their minds. “Okay, what the hell is going on right now? Please tell me that idiot didn’t text you thinking it was me.” She face palms and lets out a long sigh. “How bad is this, and do I need to contact the city morgue and let them know they should hold a spot?”
Bucky doesn’t respond right away. He looks up to the ceiling like he’s trying to summon the strength to deal with all of this. He takes deep breath and lets it out slowly. “I hoped you all would give me chance to prove I’m not the THING Hydra made me into. I know I haven’t made it easy but I didn’t realize I was still seen as an unhinged maniac.” He pushes himself back from the table and begins to get up. “I’m sorry. I need to get some air.”
“Buck, wait. Don’t go. No one thinks you’re an unhinged maniac. That’s just not the case.” Steve can’t believe anyone on the team would think that way about his friend.
“Yeah well, do you want to read the texts? Clint was very specific.” Bucky huffs as he throws his phone on the table. “The password is Hawkeye,” he says over his shoulder as he storms away.
Steve watches as Bucky leaves. He wants to call after him but thinks he should give him some space, along with the fact that he’s a little stunned by what he said on his way out. Nat seems just as shocked. She pretty much figured out that Clint had it bad for Bucky; but she had no idea that the feelings were mutual.
“Ummmm… I feel like I’m in some weird dream. Did that really just happen?” Steve asks.
“Yes, it happened. Yes, it’s weird. But…”, Nat thinks for a moment then continues. “...it’s not the worst thing in the world.”
“Excuse me? My best friend thinks he’s seen as an unhinged maniac. How is that NOT the worst thing in the world?”
“Not that part, Rogers,” Nat sighs. Dealing with these stupid boys can be exasperating to say the least. “The part where Clint and Bucky are into each other. I think they would make a perfect couple.” She pushes herself back from the table. “Now to fix this disaster before blood is spilled.”
“Hold on.” Steve grabs her arm. “You take Clint. I’ll go find Bucky. See if you can get him back down here. I’ll do the same. Maybe we can get them to talk this out.”
“Okay, text me,” she says, as she gets up from the table. “Make sure it’s the right number,” she adds with a smirk.
~~~~~~~~~
Clint ran to the roof. That’s where he goes to think, or sulk— in this case he’s doing both. He can’t believe how stupid he is. This might be the biggest mistake he’s ever made. Something as simple as a wrong number might have just cost him a friend. The worst part is, he didn’t mean what he said. He’d never intentionally hurt Bucky like that. The look of betrayal on his face when he realized it was Clint talking about him like that was soul crushing. Even though he wishes he could take it back, it’s not likely he’ll get that chance.
Just as he’s trying to decide if he should pack up and head back to Bed Stuy for a while, he hears the door to the roof open. ‘Great. Here comes Nat, like I need her to tell me what I already know.’
“Look, I know. I’m an idiot. I could’ve had something incredible and I destroyed it before it even started.” Clint continues to ramble without turning around. “I didn’t mean what I said. Maybe if I wasn’t such a coward and told him how I felt, none of this would’ve ever happened. I don’t want him just because he’s beautiful to look at, he’s an amazing person with a good heart. I wish I could tell him how sorry I am.”
“You just did.”
Clint whirls around so fast he almost falls backward over the edge of the roof. Bucky rushes forward to grab him.
“Jesus Christ, Barton!” Bucky shouts, as he pulls the archer back from his impending doom. “You confess your feelings, apologize, and then try to jump off the roof before I can kiss you and tell you I accept your apology? What the hell are you trying to do to my heart!?”
“I didn’t try to jump off the roof. You scared the crap outta me. I thought you were Nat coming up here to tell me… wait… did you just say you wanted to kiss me?”
“Yes, and if you’d shut the hell up for 5 seconds, I’d do it.”
“I’m shutting up now.”
Bucky pulls him close. He stares into Clint’s eyes for a moment, before whispering his own confession.
“I’ve wanted to do this for so long.”
It’s the most amazing kiss Clint has ever experienced. He feels like he’s going to pass out. The feeling of being in Bucky’s arms is more incredible than he could have ever imagined. They’re so caught up in each other they missed the door to the roof opening.
“OH HOLY SHIT!! MY EYES!!” Tony takes a step back while covering his eyes. “ROGERS!? ROMANOFF!? Come get your kids. They’re out of control!!” he yells. “Seriously, you both have your own FLOORS here. An entire floor, EACH. Pick one and for the love of all that’s holy, go there… now!” He turns on his heels to flee the sight in front of him and runs right into Steve and Natasha.
“Tony, what the hell? FRIDAY said you were screaming for us.”
Tony points at Bucky and Clint. “Get those two horny bastards off my roof. They’re scaring the pigeons.” he demands as he pushes past Steve.
“Well, I guess we don’t have to worry about getting them to kiss and make up, huh?” Nat quips.
“Nope, looks like they’ve got that covered.”
“We can hear you, ya know?” Bucky says as he glares at the pair. “Now go away. Clint isn’t done apologizing.”
Bucky turns his attention back to Clint “Now, I believe you mentioned something about licking?”
Clint’s eyes widen and he smirks, “So, would you prefer I start at the bottom, or the top?”
“Doesn't matter, as long as you linger in the middle,” he replies with a wink.

Breaking the Rules - Masterpage
Tumblr media
“Hello? Are you still with us?”
You snapped out of your musing and your two co-workers started to come into focus. Maria and Jarvis were standing next to you, both of them looked worried.
“You’ve been staring at the coffee pot for the past ten minutes,” Jarvis said as he put a hand on your shoulder. “Are you okay?”
“Oh, she’s not okay. She’s sick,” Maria laughed. “She’s been bitten by the love bug!”
“The love bug?” Jarvis repeated, chuckling. Maria gave him a look, silently telling him to play along and his face took on a fake serious expression. “It sounds dreadful! Is there anything we can do?”
“Alas, no, my friend,” Maria replied in a tragic tone. “The best we can do is hope that she’ll pull her head out of her ass soon.”
You rolled your eyes as you walked past her and returned to your desk. You had told Maria what had happened between you and Bucky. ‘You’re hopeless,” she had said. She wasn’t one to beat around the bush.
But she didn’t understand what it was like to be afraid of intimacy. You pushed people away because being alone was easier than healing a broken heart and that was something she could never understand.
With an exhausted sigh, you plopped down in your chair while your co-workers were still goofing around.
“How long does she have?”
“Not sure,” Maria said, shrugging, “she’s been bitten pretty hard.”
“Ha-ha, you two are hilarious,” you grumbled, sinking further into your chair. “Can we go back to work now?”
You didn’t wait for an answer. You put on your headphones and turned up the music as loud as you could stand it. Maria and Jarvis shared a look before they went back to work.
You tried to focus on your files, but your mind continued to drift back to Bucky.
You couldn’t stop thinking about him and it had been two full weeks since you last saw him. You still had his number saved in your phone under the name ‘Buttface’, but you were unable to press the stupid call button.
A balled-up paper landed on your keyboard, pulling you out of your thoughts. You raised your head and fixed Maria with a narrowed stare. She gave you a little smile and nodded toward the paper. With a sigh, you opened it up.
“There’s a delivery for me?” you read aloud while you removed your headphones.
“Yeah, I just buzzed Happy in,” she replied, laughing quietly to herself.
“Why are you laughing?” you asked as Happy entered the office.
“I have a delivery for Fartface!” he announced, walking over to your desk. “Are you Fartface?”
Maria and Jarvis burst into laughter and you could see Happy trying hard not to join them. ‘Fartface’ was the nickname Bucky had given you during the weekend.
“Yes, it’s me,” you grumbled. “I’m Fartface.”
Happy snickered quietly to himself while you signed the delivery sheet. Maria and Jarvis were still laughing behind you. You made a mental note to kill Bucky.
“This is for you!”
You let out a little gasp as Happy placed a bouquet of pink roses on your desk. After muttering a quick ‘Bye, Fartface’, he left the room.
The room was strangely silent now. Your co-workers waited with bated breath for you to open the card. You stared at the bouquet, your heart pounding with excitement.
You knew it was from Bucky, he was the only one who called you Fartface. You took the card, took a deep breath and opened it.
I’m much more me when I’m with you. Thank you for everything x JBB
You sat in stunned silence, your lips parted, as you read the card over and over. Maria snuck up behind you and leaned over your shoulder to peer at the note. She did that a lot, that woman was one nosy person.
“I know I made fun of you earlier,” she said, startling you a little, “but don’t give up on love. It looks like the love bug bit him just as hard.”
You flopped your head down on your desk and whined. You loved being single, you loved being in control, and you were not sure you had the guts to look vulnerable in front of Bucky.
“The only thing holding you back is you,” Maria said, patting your hair.
You lifted your head and rolled your eyes. “I hold the key to my destiny. Bravery is not the absence of fear. Yeah, thanks, Yoda. You’re very wise.”
“Oh, someone’s cranky!” Jarvis cooed teasingly.
“She needs to take her medicine,” Maria joked.
You flipped them off.
Friday rolled around faster than you had wanted. Usually, you loved Fridays, but things were a little complicated. You hadn’t seen Natasha since the weekend before Rebecca’s wedding. You had called and texted each other, but it wasn’t the same.
What you dreaded the most was seeing Bucky after all this time. He spent most of his Friday nights with Clint while you stayed with Nat in the kitchen, gossiping.
Friday nights were special to you; the wine, the gossip, the food, your friends, but then Bucky had upset your routine. And you didn’t like your routine disturbed.
You may have held a grudge against him for waltzing into your life. It was childish, but routines and habits were your only allies against anxiety.
Taking a deep breath, you left the lift and made your way down the hallway to Natasha’s door. As you raised your hand to knock on the door, you heard a loud, cheery voice coming from Bucky’s apartment.
You stilled and strained your ears to listen. You recognized that voice. It belonged to a well-known talk-show host. So Bucky was at home?
You should have been happy, he wasn’t going to ruin yet another Friday night. Yet, an unpleasant feeling settled in your stomach like a ball of lead. Turning around, you considered your next move.
Maria was right, it was time for you to pull your head out of your ass.
Taking your courage in both hands, you crossed the hallway and knocked on his door. Your heart was jackhammering in your chest while you waited. He opened the door almost immediately, a look of surprise on his face.
Your breath got caught in your throat at the sight of him.
He was still wearing his work clothes, dark slacks with a white button-down, but he looked relaxed. He had removed his tie and the two top buttons of his shirt were undone. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, revealing thick arms with blue veins popping out.
“Hi,” you said bashfully, knowing he’d caught you staring.
“Hi,” he echoed.
There was a brief lull in the conversation before you cleared your throat. “I’m sorry for showing up unannounced, but I wanted to thank you for the flowers. They’re lovely.”
“You’re welcome,” he said, smiling. “I appreciate what you did for me. You were great and my family loved you.”
The compliment brought a rush of heat to your face and you ducked your head to hide your smile. When you looked up at him, his smile was gone and he was avoiding your eyes.
“You should go, Nat’s probably wondering where you are. Thanks for stopping by.” He hesitated as if he was about to say something more. “You won't have to see me again. I’ll leave you alone.”
“Wait, no!” you nearly shouted when he tried to close the door. He looked at you with a quizzical expression. “Can we talk?”
He nodded and opened the door wider. You entered his apartment and looked around. His apartment looked like he had opened an Ikea catalogue to a random page and ordered everything. No framed pictures, nothing too personal.
You also noticed a few moving boxes placed against the wall.
“You’re moving out?” you asked
“I’m switching apartments with Lizzie,” he replied, rubbing the back of his neck. “She took a job as a legal assistant in a law firm; they pay well and everything. I’m not going to be able to afford this place anymore so it seemed like the best solution.”
“Why can’t you afford it anymore?”
“Well, it’s... I gave my notice today,” he replied, cringing at bit when you gasped. “I realized something during that weekend. I can’t move on and be the man I want to be if I don’t change. I took this job because they offered me a lot of money, but I hate it. I hate my boss, I hate my colleagues, I hate everything about this company.”
You covered your face with your hands. This was all your fault, you had ruined his life.
“Don’t blame yourself,” Bucky continued, knowing you better than you thought. “I should thank you. Thank you for reminding me who I really am. I meant what I wrote on that card. I’m much more me when I’m with you. I want to help people, I want to make a difference. That’s who am I.”
“Bucky,” you said softly.
“I’m fine, I should have done this a while ago,” he chuckled, shaking his head. “I feel really good. It’s like writing on the first page of a new notebook. Anything’s possible.”
You nodded, gauging his reaction. He seemed to be genuinely fine, relaxed and at peace with his past. You were happy for him. He needed someone who had their shit together.
“That’s great, Bucky.” You gave him a small smile. “I’m sure you have a lot of things to do, I should leave you alone.”
You took a step toward the door, but he stopped you.
“Please, don’t walk away from me again.” His voice dropped to a whisper. “I don’t think I can handle it again. You said you wanted to talk. Talk.”
“I don’t want to leave, Bucky, but I keep messing up and that’s not what you need righ-”
He let out a frustrated groan that sounded a lot like your name. You smiled, it reminded you of all the times he had groaned out your name during the weekend. You loved winding him up and you had missed your banter.
But this wasn’t teasing, he needed an explanation.
“Don’t tell me what’s best for me, okay?” he said, his eyes narrowed. “I want to know why you’ve changed your mind. I thought we wanted the same thing.”
“It happened too fast,” you explained, taking a step back. “We were away from home, stuck together... and I don’t know... When we came home, I realized how crazy it was and I tried to forget you, but I couldn’t.”
You spoke without looking at him. Bucky wanted to say something, but you were pouring your heart out to him so he listened.
“And I never gave you a chance, even as a friend. You were this annoying guy who unsettled my routine and I hated you for it. It’s not fair and I’m sorry. I love being in control of everything. It may sound silly, but it makes me feel safe.”
The mere thought of you feeling scared or unsafe made a shiver run down his spine. He squared his shoulders, trying to keep quiet while you unloaded your feelings.
“I’m scared of falling in love with you and I know it will happen if I’m not careful,” you said, finally looking at him. “The way my heart races when you’re near me... it’s like I’m always lightheaded.”
“Isn’t that a good feeling?” he asked, fighting a smile.
“It’s an amazing feeling. I haven’t felt like this in years, but if one day I fall in love with you, if tell you how you make me fell, then it’ll hurt a lot more when... if you break my heart.”
You could have kicked yourself when your voice faltered. Sensing your distress, Bucky took your hands in his. You had to admit it was oddly calming.
“It’s okay. Relationships are scary, exciting and unpredictable, but in a good way,” he said. “I know you’re nothing like Dot, but part of me keeps thinking that no one’ll ever love me.
“Dot didn’t just break up with me, she crushed my dreams and spat on them. I used to have my whole life planned out; fall in love, get married, have kids, but I don’t know... Now I just want someone who loves me as much as I love them.”
Silence fell between you. You watched Bucky’s thumbs move across your knuckles. The television was still blaring away with his favourite program.
“Are you okay?” he asked after a while.
“I feel like I’ve overshared,” you replied and pinched his side when he chuckled, “but I’m sort of glad I did?”
“Is that a question?” He cocked a brow at you, an amused smile curling his lips. You shrugged. “I overshared, too, I think we needed that.”
You were about to reply when your phone vibrated in your pocket. You excused yourself and pulled your phone out.
“Is that Nat?” Bucky asked.
“Yes, she’s wondering where I am.” You sent her a reply.
“You should go then,” he said. He didn’t want you to leave, but he also didn’t want to push you out of your comfort zone.
“Actually, I told her I was spending the evening with you,” you explained bashfully. “You know, like... a date. If that’s okay with you, of course.”
His eyes widened in surprise, a warm smile on his face. His smile was so big that it brightened the whole room. You were determined not to fuck this up.
“Yes!” he said, trying and failing to hide his enthusiasm. “I know a great place, it’s not too far away from here.”
“Lead the way.”
He stumbled around, trying to find his shoes. You had to bite the inside of your cheek to keep from laughing. He managed to put them on, a little less than graceful, and turned the TV off before he grabbed his keys.
“You good?” you asked, grinning.
He pondered it for a second before he lowered his head and gave you a chaste kiss. Your eyes widened when his lips touched yours. He pulled back quickly and it took you a second to snap out of your daze.
“Now, I am.”
“Smooth, Barnes,” you chuckled, following him into the hall.
“Plenty more where that came from.”
You linked your fingers with his while he locked the front door. The gesture made him smile. He bit his bottom lip, trying to hide his smile, which made you want to kiss him hard. Damn, vicious circle...
“Buttface,” you muttered playfully.
“Fartface,” he replied with a smile.
