First Contact and it's Complications: Part 2         Biology Lesson 
This is head researcher Bea'zikal following up from my previous reports as I stated before, I do apologize for the lack explanation and detail in those entries and I will now give you the full documentation of what I have observed with my time spent with Humanity and more specifically Human Head researcher who is referred to as Jamal Alteriq, a very fine scientific mind and excellent guide as he was the one to be our ambassador through Human space and of course to keep eyes on us. We saw many incredible things on our journey and I will explain in due time, but I thought it wise to give a basic run down on human biology to better help visualize the scenes I will explain in later logs. (Note: I advise you to open the attached encrypted files for observation while reading)
Humans are lightly Haired mammals that evolved on a rich but highly diverse Planet that was covered in approximately 71% water with humans living on the 29% of Land, resources were plentiful but competition was fierce as many species competed for control of those same resources, the resources in question being food and 'fresh' water which is a specific term as humans cannot drink water that is above or below a certain Ph. Level or a has a heavy imbalance of minerals;They also cannot drink any water that is contaminated with parasites, or Planetary elements such as dirt. This of course isn't to say humans have entirely weak stomachs as they are capable of consuming certain acids such as Malic and Citric Acid which is used in food flavoring, and of which would result in violent death should either substance be consumed by a Zeatikian, in addition to consumption of such compounds they can digest Certain forms of Alcohol and many forms of Capsaicin which many of course know isn't poisonous but considered non-edible to all Zeatikians and instead sees a use as a defense weapon. Moving on from the topic of consumable and non-consumable liquids brings us to eating habits; Humans specified as Omnivore 'Persistence' Predators, and can consume a wide variety of Meat and Plants, which a balance of both is needed to maintain peak physical form and a healthy digestive and immune system. From what Human Head Researcher Jamal Alteriq has told me ancient human hunting wasn't chasing down prey at high speeds but rather simply outlasting it in a slower walk chase(Note: Humans have a extreme amount of stamina and can walk for hours at a time as they evolved to efficiently maintain a pace of speed) and when the prey was tired and unable to continue on humans would slay the creature and bring it back to be cooked then consumed. (Note: Cooking is one of the few things that are shared in Both Zeatikians and Human evolution) Head Researcher Jamal Alteriq also informed me that eventually ancient Humanity began Agriculture and that is what primarily began to start up human culture and civilization.(Note: again one of the few things that are shared amongst our history)
Head Researcher Jamal Alteriq told me of the Human Life stages which are of a very different cycle of our own from our People the Zeatikians, conception of offspring is relatively the same between our two species, but with various degrees of success in humans as their method of reproduction is relatively different between Human to Human. Head Researcher Jamal Alteriq Suggested that's all we do to speak on the matter and I obliged his request how ever odd I thought it was.(Note: After doing research on this topic myself I also now recommend that all Zeatikian researchers stay away from this topic as well as it's very traumatizing to look at) Humans generally can only have one child every half a cycle but it can be more numerous if chance allows it, and human offspring is extremely vulnerable and must be cared for by it's parents constantly otherwise it will most likely guaranteed to perish; of course in this time human 'infants' (Note: Infants are the name for children that under a cycle and half old) are cared for by not only the parents but also other humans hired to be care takers as well that can give the infants whatever they need at anytime while the parents set off to complete tasks. 
Humans possess what is called an Endoskeleton(Note: Observe attached files) which gives their bodies structure and allows an anchor for their extremely complex muscular system as well as keep internal organs safe and secure. This Endoskeleton is made up of bones of very high calcium content and is extremely durable and strong, shown being able to with stand many hits that could cripple, paralyze or downright kill a healthy Zeatikian. Infant humans start out with more numerous but weaker bones and cartilage numbering around 300 individual structures but eventually after many cycles they all fuse into their respective positions and become stronger and thicker; this is most prominent around what they call their 'Skull' which is a bone structure that contains their brain and connects to the spinal column (Note: Observe Highlighted Area) and starts out segmented and eventually becomes fully fused and one solid structure in about 22 cycles. Part of the function of the skull is a basic one hinged jaw that contains anywhere from 32 to 36 bone structures they call teeth which allows them to tear through tougher foods and aids in digestion, the human jaw is relatively weak surprisingly only able to produce 300UPSQ which would absolutely be enough to hurt a Zeatikian so I would advise you be careful.
Adolescent Human offspring undergoes a change around 9 Cycles in males and 7.5 in females, as they approach sexual maturity they begin to swell on muscle mass and increase in growth exponentially over a time period of 4 cycles, during this time hormones are pumped through and over about 1.5 to 2 cycles the voice deepens and body hair is increased, this incredible change is known to cause certain behavior changes as well as changes in diet and appetite. Many human females have certain large orifices located on their chests that are used primarily to feed their young, which should have been obvious seeing how I have already stated they are indeed mammals,(Note: I have been told to report on this much only as logging anymore would make many among the human population uncomfortable, I do not know why but I shall oblige) and as mammals they are indeed warm blooded, which means they do not take too well to fluctuating temperatures as Being in below freezing temperatures for too long can lead to a humans death in about 20 minutes should they be naked in said weather; and so if in the future you have humans boarding your vessel be sure to keep it atleast a median temperature of 400TM and provide them with necessary heating elements if they do not have any.
Humans possess a 'Circulatory system' much like our own that pumps blood all across it's body at a very steady rate of 60 to 100 beats per tick, which is quite slow compared to our 120 to 150 beats per tick. Humans also possess a blood color that shines a bright red compared to that of a Zeatikian that has a bright purple hue, both of our species have iron in our respective Hemoglobins but our kind carries what they call 'Hemerythrin' while they carry whats called 'Heme' and thus that's what gives the difference in blood pigmentation. They also possess various different organs that process everything from sugars and proteins to alcohol and carbs, the 'Liver' which is described as a 'Blood Filter' cleanses the blood as it passes through it, while organs like the 'Kidneys' process liquid waste, sugars, salts, and all minerals to help keep it stable within the body.
The Human 'Immune system' is a very strong and very important system in the human body as humans do not have segmented Carapaces like all Zeatikian's have, rather they possess a skin of 7 layers and this layered skin protects the body from the outside world, when penetrated or slashed open blood will began to flow out much like a broken carapace or cut joint segment would, the cells in the human would try to seal the cut with platelets which will form a scab, which is a temporary seal while the skin is being repaired anew; as this process does share similarities with the way our Carapace heals itself our process is much slower while the humans can heal their skin in a matter of a few rotations depending on the severity of the injury. Of course during the cut possible bacteria and other such microorganisms could have infiltrated the bloodstream and usually once successful they become targeted by the protector cells or as humans call them 'white blood cells' for destruction.
The 'Digestive track' is relatively self-explanatory so I will be brief on the subject, when food is consumed it is first chewed and made wet by the 'Saliva' a human produces in their mouth which helps break it down further and eases the transfer of food from the mouth down the 'Trachea' as they call it and into the 'Stomach' which becomes broken down by 'Stomach' acid,various compounds,and gut bacteria that absorb the nutrients and forward the waste through what humans call the 'Large Intestine' which then transfers through the 'Small intestine' which is the excreted by the Human, relatively the same processes any Zeatikian goes through.
Humans of this modern era however are nearly perfect as about 1000 cycles ago an event on their home world that was put into motion made humans as nearly perfect as they could be biologically, but this change however was not a instant process as the changes would only take place slowly after every generation, each one living longer then the last, getting sick less, and less in the population being born with genetic conditions that had debilitated humanity for eons. Nowadays it is rarer for humans to catch a sickness, but impossible for any human being to be born with a genetic condition aside from the few they found desirable. Many live long fulfilling lives from what I'm told by Head Researcher Jamal Alteriq, some living their full total lifespans of 200 cycles which I can only dream of living a mere 40 cycles let alone a long 200 cycles. 
This concludes my report on the basic biology of humanity I hope you found it informative and helpful, I shall work on my next log about human economic and social status, which Human Head Researcher Jamal Alteriq Helped immensely on.

The Joy of Raising (and eating) Your Very Own Yeast Child(ren)

I know I am, statistically, late to this bandwagon.
Once a mysterious realm that only seasoned bakers would dare enter, the world of baking with a home yeast starter has become much less foreign to the scores of reluctant public health enthusiasts trying to find a way to use their sudden increase in free time.
It’s also because yeast is both reasonably expensive (like $5 for a jar that lasts a while, granted, but if you make all of your own bread, it quickly becomes the expensive ingredient) and frankly when everyone is making yeasty baked goods and supply chains are disrupted due to a pesky global pandemic, you want to have a backup. Discard also makes the food you eat just a little better for you (see below), and if you’re relying on more starchy things like flour in your diet for budget reasons, why not get everything you can out of all the other ingredients?
I, like everyone else, made like three sourdough starters in the last 12 months. I then let them die because holy crap those things 1, ate way more than I expected them to, and 2, I kept ending up with this stinktastic, slowly-fermenting glob of goo (the discard) in a takeout container on my porch because otherwise my entire apartment would have smelled like it.
I know I’m not doing a great job of selling it, but I wanted to make a post that showed it really was possible to not only sustainably and economically grow and maintain your own edible bacteria-and-yeast colony in an old jam jar, but really make it a part of your family.
1- How to Make a Starter:
Before we can really get into the joys of raising a pet sourdough starter, you have to actually get your hands on one. It’s actually way, way easier than I thought:
First, you get the following:
A jar with a lid (preferably glass- my first one was a pasta sauce jar from Aldi, but anything that’s clear-ish and around a pint/500ish ml will work great)
A half cup or so of whole wheat flour (if you don’t use whole wheat flour often, it will only be a few cents if you buy it in the bulk section)
6-7 tablespoons of tap water
A clean spoon
A rubber band or dry erase marker (optional but recommended)
All-purpose white flour to feed
Second, you put the flour and water in the jar and mix until it forms a thin, sticky paste

Third, cover loosely with the lid, and mark the level of water-flour paste either by putting the rubber band around the jar or marking it with a dry-erase marker.
Fourth, wait like 24 hours for bubbles to appear. These are CO2 bubbles released as the wild yeast and bacteria that is naturally present in whole wheat flour eats the wheat starch.

Fifth, once your flour-water-yeast goo doubles in size, scoop out half of it and discard (it should be stretchy, sticky, and bubbly in texture and smell pleasantly yeasty and ferment-y), place a quarter cup of all-purpose flour and 3 tbsp of water in the jar and mix with the remaining starter. Repeat every time the mixture doubles in size.
Note: if you go too long without feeding your yeast baby, it will form a watery layer and start to stink. All you have to do to save it is get as much of the watery stuff out as possible, discard half, and feed it until the smell and texture return to normal.
Once you start having to do this multiple times per day, congrats! You have a live and active sourdough starter!
2- What to Do With All That Goo (or ”discard”):
So basically now you have a boring, hungry toddler that really likes flour and outputs a lot of gooey discard.
First, don’t think of discard as a waste! You should think of your starter as a yeast farm and the throw-away portion (the “discard”) as the product.
Using discard in recipes not only lends a deeper flavor and chewier texture to baked goods, but helps partially digest the wheat starches (making discard slightly lower in quick carbohydrates than traditional flour), acts as a prebiotic (the fiber in discard-laden baked goods is better for feeding your gut bacteria, which helps you digest things more thoroughly), decreases the amount of gluten, and the lactic acid bacteria in discard increases the amount of nutrients like folate, potassium, and magnesium that the body can absorb during digestion. Basically, it lets you get more out of the food you eat and makes baked goods (slightly) better for you!
Here’s how you can use it (remember that measurements shown below are “stirred down” discard, meaning you have to stir the bubbles out of your discard before measuring):
Bread/bagels/english muffins- replace the active dry yeast portion of the recipe with a quarter cup of discard, and let the dough rise 12 or more hours after kneading. This longer rise time is required because the wild yeasts are not quite as active (or voracious) as their cultivated cousins, and you want time for the whole thing to get nice and sour from the lactic acid bacteria.
Crackers/thin-crust pizza dough- replace half the flour in a cracker/pizza dough recipe with discard and omit yeast.
Crepes/pancakes/waffles- replace up to 3/4 of the flour in a crepe, waffle or pancake recipe with discard, and omit yeast.
Quickbreads- replace up to 3/4 of the flour in a quickbread (pumpkin, apple, zucchini, banana bread, etc...) with discard and adjust liquid to desired consistency.
Brownies- replace as much as all of the flour in your brownie recipe with discard and adjust the liquid to the desired consistency.
Granola- replace the binder (usually honey or sugar) in granola and granola bar recipes with discard, and sweeten to taste.
Pie crust- replace half the flour in your pie crust with discard, add the discard when you would normally add the water, and omit the water.
Batter for fried fish/chicken/potato wedges/veg, etc...- water down the discard with some beer or water, dip your fried things, and fry.
3- Preserving Your Starter Colony When You Have More Bread and Crackers Than You Can Comfortably Eat:
As much as you’d like to think you’ll use discard for every recipe, you might find that your creativity (or just your tolerance for discard-flavored things) gets stretched a little thin over time.
That’s okay!
Here are a few great ways to save your starter without needing to feed it every 12 hours:
Fridge it- If you just want less discard, put your whole starter colony in your fridge- the cold slows down the yeast’s digestion so you only have to feed it once per week.
Freeze it- if you have a few days that you don’t have anything to do with your discard or want to save up for a bigger recipe, portion it into greased ice cube trays, freeze it, and then pop the discard chunks out and store in a ziploc or jar. Thaw it to use in larger recipes down the line.
Dry it- spread your discard on parchment paper-lined baking trays and let it air out at room temperature for a few days, then chop it up and store in an airtight container (with some burnt flour in a little cloth envelop if you live in a humid climate).
Gift it/sell it: You’d be surprised at how many people feel the need to buy an existing starter. Feed your starter and then portion it into small jars (baby food, etc... with labels removed), then freeze the jars. Gift or sell these frozen portions by tying a little ribbon around them (feel free to name them and write the parent starter’s date of birth on the ribbon) and sending them off with a little printout of how to care for them.

Meet Coffee (Coffea spp.)
Coffee might not seem like it needs much of an introduction. However, because it’s so much a part of our every day, it’s easy to forget that this beloved beverage comes from a plant that does, in fact, have many nutritive and medicinal properties. Coffee has become another casualty of a food system that maintains such a divide between the food that ends up on your plate (or in your cup) and the dirt that it was grown in.
How often do you think about where your coffee came from, much less than the small tree the coffee beans grew on or the hands that harvested and then roasted them?
A cup of coffee is not much different than drinking a tea of medicinal herbs. We forget that coffee comes from a medicinal plant and can, in fact, be medicine.

Botanical Background
Coffee is part of the Rubiaceae family, also called the madder family. This family is one of the largest plant families with over 500 genera and more than 6,500 different species.
Relatives of coffee include Gardenia jasminoides (common gardenia found in many gardens), Rubia tinctora (common madder, one of the largest sources of red dye), and Cinchona officinalis (source of quinine used to treat malaria).
Coffee is native to Ethiopia, but is now cultivated all over the world. It’s primarily found in the equatorial regions of Central and South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
Plants in the Coffea genus vary widely in size. Their leaves may also vary in color and different species have different growing requirements.
But in general, Coffea spp. is a woody, evergreen shrub with oval or elliptical-shaped opposite leaves that are typically a glossy, deep green.
The Coffea genus consists of ~25 species, but 2 of those account for the majority of all commercial production:
Coffea arabica (Arabica coffee) – ~60% of worldwide commercial coffee production
Coffea canephora (Robusta coffee)
The flowers of the coffee plant are white. They grow in clusters at the leaf axils and are said to be very aromatic, resembling the smell of jasmine.
Coffee beans are the seeds of the berries, called cherries, that ripen from green to red.
A Very Brief History of Coffee
Coffee didn’t spring out of the coffee cherry womb as the massively popular, stimulating, and crave-worthy beverage it is today. There’s a long and fascinating history that I won’t even pretend to be able to share in any way that will do it justice.
The history of coffee includes a tangled and dark web of ecological destruction and the obliteration of indigenous cultures. It’s the cause of much bloodshed that’s not often (or ever) talked about over a cup of Joe.
It’s believed that coffee was in cultivation as early as 575 AD, about 1500 years ago. Legend has it that an Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi discovered coffee. He noticed that his goats became more energetic, jumping around and bleating loudly, after having eaten red berries from some nearby plants. Curious, Kaldi tried some for himself. And thus are the origins of the world’s caffeine habit that has endured the test of time.
Nonetheless, coffee likely didn’t start out as a warming good-morning beverage. It’s more likely that the beans were chewed and/or ground and rolled into balls with ghee as a energy snack for long journeys or battle.
After a scuffle with some monks over coffee beans being the devil’s work that accidentally ended in the world’s first cup of coffee, the monks decided that coffee was actually very helpful in keeping them awake during their spiritual work.
And that, my coffee-loving friends, is the origin of the world’s most popular stimulating beverage.

15 Science-Backed Health Benefits of Coffee
Today, coffee is the most highly consumed psychoactive substance in the entire world! It’s no secret that coffee has amazing stimulating effects. Many of us can’t start our days without it! And while caffeine does play a big role in the medicine of coffee, there is so much more to this plant!
Here are 15 science-backed health benefits of coffee:
1. The Incredible Antioxidant Power of Coffee
It’s been said that one of the biggest and most consistent sources of antioxidants in our diets is from coffee! And that’s just because we drink so much of it! While the antioxidant activity of coffee beans varies widely with the variety (Arabica vs Robusta), type (green/un-roasted or roasted) and manner of processing (light, medium, or dark roasted), it remains high across the board. In comparison, coffee’s antioxidant capacity is on par with green tea and cacao.
Why are antioxidants so important? It’s because our exposure to oxidative stress is constant!
Whether it’s caused by environmental factors, poor quality food, certain medications, smoking, alcohol abuse, or any number of the physical, mental, or emotional stressors we face, oxidative stress is one of the most prominent causes of premature aging and numerous inflammatory diseases.
With coffee having such a high antioxidant capacity, it’s a highly valuable plant medicine for the times.

As a general stimulant, coffee also stimulates healthy digestion. The bitter properties of coffee are no secret, and it’s no wonder so many are apt to load their cups with cream and sugar. As we drink coffee, the bitter properties of the coffee increase the secretion of gastric enzymes, helping us to better digest the foods we eat.
Plus, the phenolic compounds in coffee can help to encourage the growth of beneficial bacterial in our guts. This serves to reduce inflammation, which in turn, help us to better absorb nutrients from the foods we eat.
And you may have also noticed coffee’s laxative effects? That’s because coffee increases the peristalsis (muscular contractions) of the colon, aiding us in healthy elimination.
On the other hand, coffee may be too intense for some and can actually be really hard on your digestive system as well. If coffee is hard on your digestive system, generally you know and can feel the unpleasant effects.
3. Liver Health & Coffee
Over the years, several studies have demonstrated coffee’s positive effects on many chronic liver diseases. It has even been found beneficial for heavy drinkers. And on account of the incredibly damaging effects that excessive alcohol consumption can have on our livers, not to mention our general health, this is a win for coffee!
While the mechanism is still not fully understood yet, its beneficial effects on the liver are thought to be due to coffee’s high antioxidant activity and its ability to decrease fat accumulation in the liver.
Coffee has also been associated with a reduced risk of liver cancers and also appears to be able to inhibit the replication of Hepatitis C virus.

Coffee, the stimulator of all things, even has a stimulating effect on our kidney function. As a mild diuretic, coffee can help the body get rid of excess sodium and other metabolic wastes by increasing the amount of fluid we’re getting rid of through urine.
This action is likely the culprit of a long-held stereotype that coffee is dehydrating. However, the diuretic effect of coffee is pretty mild and doesn’t actually cause a loss of any more liquid than you’re taking in. If anything, coffee stimulates our kidneys to better do the job they’re meant to do anyway.
Nonetheless, if you’re sensitive to caffeine, it may cause headaches. And because headaches are a common symptom of dehydration, coffee often gets the blame. Drinking lots of water is an important part of a healthy lifestyle regardless, perhaps even more so if you enjoy lots of coffee.
5. Fatigue & Coffee
This might seem like a no-brainer. Coffee, the best part of waking up? For millions and millions of people, it really is. Coffee has been fueling night-shifters, late night study sessions, long days, and monotonous tasks for a very, very long time.
Drinking coffee is known to increase alertness and decrease many symptoms of fatigue such as lack of energy and mental or physical exhaustion.
It’s a helpful mask for fatigue that can help us get through whatever we may need to. But what goes up, must always come down, and it’s no substitute for sleep.
6. Pain Relief & Coffee
The pharmaceutical industry has long used caffeine in many analgesic (pain-relieving) medicines, both prescription and over-the-counter. Coffee’s pain relieving abilities are due to several different factors:
Coffee stimulates the release of dopamine and endorphins that act as natural pain killers
Coffee can bind to and block receptors in our brain that play a role in how we perceive pain
Considering the possible negative side effects that many pain killers, both prescription and over-the-counter, come with, coffee may be a safer alternative if, again, you’re not sensitive to caffeine. However, the greater your tolerance to caffeine, the lower its pain relieving effects.
7. Mental Health & Coffee
A study has found that drinking coffee can help to reduce the risk of depression by up to 30%! And in general, studies have shown that coffee drinkers are less depressed. It’s thought that this effect is due to coffee’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, as well as its beneficial effects on our gut microbiome and digestion.
This speaks a lot to the fact that when our bodies are healthier, we’re happier. The greatest benefit to mental health was observed to be associated with drinking at least 2 cups of coffee a day.
8. Physical Performance/Endurance & Coffee
I fully admit that I had no idea that many athletes use caffeine to help increase their stamina, strength, and overall physical and mental performance until researching for this post. Nonetheless, coffee has been found to be a suitable “pre-workout” of sorts to help many physical performance activities such as sprinting and even walking speed in men over 80. For athletes and other physically active people, the caffeine in coffee can give just enough boost for better strength and endurance.
9. Type 2 Diabetes & Coffee
Type 2 diabetes is a disease on the rise! Luckily, there are so many plant medicines, like chamomile, that may help in preventing Type 2 diabetes by way helping to regulate blood sugar and insulin resistance. Nonetheless, medicinal plants are still just one part of a larger and necessary shift towards a healthier lifestyle.
One 2018 study found that coffee consumption is inversely related to the risk for type 2 diabetes. For each cup per day of coffee consumed, the researchers found a 6% decrease in risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
And it’s believed that coffee’s high antioxidant capacity, anti-inflammatory properties, and its positive impact on our gut micro-biomes are to thank for this reduction in risk.
10. Cancer & Coffee
At one point there was question about coffee actually being a carcinogen due to a potential cancer-causing chemical produced in the roasting process. This theory was further fueled by the fact that many coffee drinkers also tend to be smokers. Since smoking cigarettes is associated with an increased risk of all kinds of cancers, it was hard to separate the two.
However, more recent studies have shown that coffee consumption can actually lower the risk of some types of cancer including prostate, liver, and endometrial cancer, as well as some mouth and throat cancers. This is due in large part to its high antioxidant activity.
11. Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s Disease & Coffee

1. Prowl became a cop because her whole family was full of cops, so she was exposed to it a lot as a kid—and consequently got completely obsessed with it. Spent her whole life preparing to be a cop. Did all her book reports on police biographies and as many school projects as physically possible on the history of policing, went into her local Explorer program as early as possible, spent every year in track & field in school and took two different martial arts extracurrucularly, drove off all her potential friends in school because she basically had nothing to talk about that didn’t somehow relate back to policing, majored in criminal justice in college, every single class and elective she took was geared specifically toward giving her extra knowledge or skills that she thought could be useful for policing, applied for the police academy the day she finished her last final, soared through the application process (with one near-hiccup during the psych eval), completely aced every class and every lesson in the police academy.
She was a police officer for less than a year when she saw crime scene investigators at work examining the blood spatter evidence at a crime scene, and realized deep in her soul that she had to spend the rest of her life doing what they were doing or she would literally die.
She’s now a ballistics expert and is extremely happy with it.
2. She’s still weirdly obsessed with policing and struggles to carry on conversations that don’t relate back to law enforcement. Luckily, this is less weird for someone who works in law enforcement than it was for, like, a twelve-year-old. But it does mean that, outside of coworkers who talk with her about work, she doesn’t really talk to anyone. She doesn’t have close friends. She doesn’t talk to her family. She’s lonely.
She goes on a lot of first dates, because she’s conventionally attractive and big enough boobs automatically cancel out resting bitch face, and she doesn’t have the social sense to realize she probably shouldn’t be giving a shot to every guy who hits on her out of nowhere simply because they think she’s hot. She has a fair amount of second dates, too, because it’s excusable to only talk about your basic life facts and your job on the first date, and because a lot of guys just don’t notice if they’re doing more talking than she is. She even has some third dates with those guys who are extremely chatty and too self-absorbed to realize she’s saying almost nothing back. It’s the fourth date at the very latest that either the guy realizes that she can basically only talk about one subject, and says maybe they should see other people; or that she decides the sickening feeling like she’s stuck inside an invisible bubble and all alone while she’s supposed to be connecting with this other human being has gotten too bad to bear, and she texts him to thank him for his time and inform him that they will no longer be dating, and then ignores his calls.
Sometimes she hangs out in libraries reading because she hopes to meet maybe vaguely intellectual guys and that seems like the place to do it, but she doesn’t strike up conversations with anyone and it turns out that pretty much the only guys who interrupt reading women at libraries are jerks. (She still dates them, and ends up predictably disappointed.) Sometimes she goes out to bars, which she really doesn’t like, but at least then she sometimes gets laid without having to go through a couple awful dates first, which is something.
And believe it or not her dating life is going better than the rest of her social life.
3. Prowl is bi-everything and demi-everything. The latter has prevented her from figuring out the former because it’s kind of hard to realize you’re attracted to girls if that attraction only springs up after you’ve made an emotional connection, and also you don’t make emotional connections. And also she hasn’t even figured out she’s demi because she’s hungry to make a romantic connection to someone and because she’s got a fairly active libido, and she’s never quite realized that wanting to be in love and wanting to have sex aren’t the same as having attraction TO someone. So she keeps dating lame dudes that hit on her first.
Other things Prowl has not figured out about herself: she’s autistic. You’d think that would be one she would have figured out about herself, because it’s honestly pretty obvious. But she never had the super obvious traits that would have been dead giveaways as a child—her stims were either small and unassuming or else done in private and so never stuck out to anyone; she had shutdowns instead of meltdowns and those were very infrequently triggered; and when she was nonverbal as a child people ascribed it to deeply traumatic childhood experiences. (Garden-variety divorced parents, coincidentally around the time she went nonverbal.) In fact, it turns out you can get away with a whole lot of pretty obvious signs of autism without getting diagnosed if you use “childhood trauma, therapy will fix it”! Especially if you’re a girl! Wow!
She probably would have gotten diagnosed if she hadn’t figured out how to get words to work again. And immediately demanded to stop going to therapy.
4. She rents the attic of a house occupied by five other people, who clearly all know each other and are friends, so she’s not sure why they rented out the attic to a total stranger. Maybe they couldn’t find a sixth friend to rent it? She thinks they’re all construction workers or something. Only 1.5 of them isn’t an idiot. Even though she has the same permission to use the common areas of the house that the rest of the residents do, she never uses them, and sneaks around avoiding the living room or any other room where the other residents are likely to be in order to get to the kitchen. She also eats at odd hours to try to avoid running into any of them. Sadly, a couple of them eat at odd hours too, so occasionally she’ll peek in the doorway and then bolt like a scared rabbit because somebody’s already in there. Why is she so determined to avoid them tho? It’s like she thinks she’s a home invader and she can’t let them know she’s there. She pays the same rent the rest of them do. What’s she scared of.
They met as construction workers but only two of them actually still are. The others are a doctor, a trucker, and a drug dealer respectable chemical engineering student. And they all think their roommate upstairs is pretty great even though she only talks to them, like, once a month. (They would be 100% dtf any time if she asked but she hasn’t and they don’t know how to broach the topic besides nude pics. And they figure it’s probably a bad idea to send unsolicited nude pics to someone who works with the police. Especially when they’re hiding drugs.)
5. I was like “hey guys I’ve got four headcanons but I need a fifth” and my friends were like “what’s Prowl’s favorite pizza” and I was like “what kind of pizza says ‘autistic forensic investigator with a special interest in police and a sad social life’” and I got “pepperoni? cheese pizza?” 
Prowl’s favorite pizza is cheese pizza, except she doesn’t eat the cheese, she peels it off and just eats the pizza with the tomato sauce. No, she can’t order a pizza with sauce and no cheese, if you do that the tomato sauce gets overcooked and crusty and nasty. It needs the layer of cheese on top to protect it during the baking, and then the cheese can be removed and the beautiful saucy pizza consumed.
She prefers a largely liquid diet, though. As a kid she’d mechanically swallow down sandwiches (PB&J, preferably, or melted cheese BUT NOT on toast ONLY on plain bread and melted in the microwave), or squishy food like mashed potatoes and cooked carrots, but given a choice she’d live on soup. If the food is the least bit crunchy she can’t process it.
The recent trends of a billion smoothie recipes and nutrient drinks that supposedly fulfill 100% of a human’s dietary needs have been basically the greatest thing to ever happen to her, in her life, full stop.

Freeze dried foods: a beneficial addition to a varied diet
For years, I was adamant about not feeding my bettas (Betta splendens) freeze dried foods of any sort. When I was first doing my research on betta care I saw betta keeper after betta keeper recommend staying away from freeze dried foods, and the reasons they gave for doing so made sense to me at the time. As I’ve grown as a fish keeper and learnt more about fish physiology and nutrition, however, my stance on feeding freeze dried foods has changed. Instead of seeing freeze dried foods as a potential hazard to be avoided, I now see them as a valuable addition to a varied diet. The following is my reasoning for including freeze dried foods as a part of my bettas' diets.
There are several reasons given in support of not feeding freeze dried foods regularly to domestic bettas, with two of the most common being: expansion of food once in the fish’s stomach, potentially leading to bloat and constipation issues; and lack of nutrition/use as an occasional treat, something along the lines of betta fish junk food.
In regards to the first reason given for not eating freeze dried foods, potential problems with bloating or constipation are easily avoided through taking two simple precautions: carefully monitoring how much food you give your fish at each meal, and through presoaking the freeze dried food prior to feeding.
The first precaution is one that should be taken regardless of what food you are feeding, whether it be a pelleted, flaked, frozen, live, gel, or freeze dried food. Is the risk of overfeeding inherently greater with freeze dried foods? So long as one is aware and mindful of what they are doing, no, I don’t believe it is.
The second precaution, presoaking foods before feeding, brings me to one of my favorite reasons for feeding freeze dried foods: they are an excellent vessel through which to deliver vitamins or medications to a fish. Liquid vitamin supplements are a daily part of my own bettas' care regimen, and they receive at least one vitamin supplement daily. These liquid vitamin supplements can be used to presoak freeze dried foods, allowing them to expand before feeding and thus eliminating the risk of expansion inside the fish’s stomach. Freeze dried foods are naturally more absorbent than either pellets or frozen foods, making them an excellent food of choice for delivering vitamins or, if need be, medication.
Some medications, particularly those used for treating internal issues such as internal bacterial infections or internal parasites, are more effective when directly ingested by the fish than they are when added to the water column. Certain medications can be mixed with wetted dry foods- including freeze dried foods- and then fed directly to the affected fish. To an ill fish, a favorite freeze dried food may be more appealing when mixed with medication than pellets or flakes. Therefore, freeze dried foods may also have potential as an aid in medicating domestic bettas suffering from certain internal ailments.
The criticism also exists that freeze dried foods are purely treats or “junk food” for aquarium fishes, and should be fed to domestic bettas sparingly as a result. On the surface, nothing might appear to be wrong with this statement. After delving deeper into the science behind fish nutrition and feeding, however, this logic just does not make sense to me.
It's true that the highest quality pellet and gel foods are a nutritionally complete, varied diet in and of themselves, and that an aquarium fish can easily thrive on them. These foods are composed of ingredients a betta can digest and gain a lot of nutrients from. This being said, however, these foods usually do not closely imitate the diet Betta splendens and its wild ancestors have evolved to survive on.
The domestic betta’s wild cousins and ancestors are primarily insectivores, and the domesticated variety has retained the upturned mouth and short digestive tract that are indicative of this. These features of the betta’s anatomy and physiology suggest a diet composed of insects, insect larvae, small crustaceans, and any other small prey items they can get their mouths on. 
Keeping this in mind, certain freeze dried foods provide domestic betta fishes with food items that are potentially more natural to them than even the most high quality commercial pelleted fish foods. It’s true that there are certain freeze dried foods Betta splendens would not be likely to encounter in its native environment, but which is closer to the insect, insect larvae, and small crustacean diet they have evolved to subsist on- salmon, or a mealworm? Krill, or a river shrimp? Halibut, or tubifex worms? Yes, the Betta splendens the majority of fish keepers care for are domesticated, and it can be argued what is or is not “natural” for a domesticated animal species. But even domesticated fishes retain certain physiological characteristics that suggest certain nutritional needs that must be met in the home aquarium. Foods that so closely replicate a betta’s evolutionary diet and that help meet these nutritional needs can hardly be thought of as “junk food” or rare treats.
This is not an argument for replacing pellets or frozen foods with freeze dried foods; in fact, both pellets and frozen foods are an integral component of my own bettas’ diets. Rather, this is an attempt to illustrate some of the potential benefits of freeze dried foods and to address the thought that certain food items are hazardous and should always be avoided. Freeze dried foods should not replace other components of a varied diet, but they are valid and beneficial additions- not just as a once-in-a-blue-moon treat, but as an important component of the fish’s diet themselves. Freeze dried foods can be ground up and added to gel foods, or fed as they are after being presoaked (preferably in either vitamin supplements or garlic juice and not just tank water). Foods that are not as readily obtained by the average fish keeper in either live or frozen form, such as tubifex worms or river shrimps, can be more easily added into a betta’s diet in their freeze dried forms.
Personally, I have observed no difference in my fish's health and appearance since working freeze dried foods into their feeding regimen that would give me cause to stop feeding these foods. They still poop regularly, they are not bloated, and there have been no observable digestion or swim bladder complications.
I have, however, observed reactions to freeze dried foods that solidify to me their place as a part of a varied diet, with brightening of colors, increased activity, and eagerness to eat being a few of them. Freeze dried foods are one additional way to provide enrichment for your betta fish, and to help care not just for their physical well-being, but their mental health as well.
This is just my take on, and experience with, freeze dried foods; something to consider and chew on. But I am always open to further discussion and conversation on the topic, too!

Though we’re told that people who lose weight rapidly going on diets are the ones that tend to put the weight back on, statistics and studies suggest otherwise. The Lancet reported on a study that found that after 144 weeks, people who lost weight gradually put it back on at the same rate as people who lost weight rapidly.2
When researchers at UCLA analyzed 31 long-term diet studies, they found that a majority of participants regained all the weight, plus more.
Their conclusion? According to Traci Mann, UCLA Associate Professor of Psychology, “Most of them would have been better off not going on the diet at all. Their weight would be pretty much the same, and their bodies would not suffer the wear and tear from losing weight and gaining it all back.”3
This yo-yo dieting has been linked to cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, and depression.4
At one time, I was just like all those other people, looking for the perfect diet that would allow me to lose weight in record time, dropping 10 pounds only to gain 15 in the months to come.
Then, one transformative day, I decided to leave the diets behind and chose to eat whole foods as nature intended. It was a journey I took with my entire family and prompted by my son who was in and out of hospitals since his birth.
In the process, my son regained his health, and I lost 70 pounds. I have maintained my ideal weight of 135 without “dieting” ever since.
So, what does this story have to do with alkaline water?
Everything.
Alkaline + Water = Health
Some might suggest that alkaline water for weight loss is yet another diet to be listed in Wikipedia. I disagree. Alkaline water for weight loss combines two of the most important ingredients for sustaining and creating health—alkalinity and water.
Let’s take a look at the first topic—alkalinity—and how it relates to our health.
Food and Alkalinity
When my family and I changed our diet to one based on whole foods, guess what happened? We stopped eating the many foods associated with the Standard American Diet that causes acidity in the body, and more of the foods that create an alkaline environment, such as fresh fruits and vegetables.
Did you know that everything you eat leaves a metabolic “ash” in your body? This residue occurs because the body actually burns the food you eat as it extracts the energy or calories it requires in much the same way that wood is burned for fuel in a fire pit–a process called oxidation. And, just as burning wood leaves behind ash, so, too, does food. The ash left behind is either acidic or alkaline.
Foods that leave an acid ash includes all meats, dairy, most grains, eggs, coffee, sodas, alcohol and sugar. Alkaline-producing foods include fruits, vegetables, ancient grains such as quinoa and kamut, beans, and some nuts and seeds.
What is an alkaline environment?
All living things must maintain a certain pH level in order to survive. pH is the measurement of the hydrogen ion concentration and ranges from 0 to 14 with 0 representing very acidic, 7 indicating a neutral environment, and 14 referring to extreme alkaline environments. Humans require a blood pH level within the 7.3 to 7.4 range—a very tight margin that the body goes to extraordinary measures to maintain.
When our bodies are continually bombarded by acid producing factors, from the food we eat, to environmental toxins, to the thoughts we repeatedly think, buffer systems start the process of neutralizing these excessive acids in order to keep us alive.
The three main bodily buffer systems are:
Alkaline Minerals: Sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium are the alkaline minerals stored in the tissues of the body that bind with acids in order to neutralize them, and eventually eliminate them from the body through the kidneys, lungs, colon, and skin.
If the tissues are lacking these essential nutrients, the body finds them and extracts them from other areas, such as the bones and muscles.
Fun Fact: You would think that a lemon would be classified as an acidic food…yes? However, because it is high in calcium, magnesium and potassium, the metabolic ash it leaves behind is actually alkaline.
Lymphatic System: The lymphatic system removes acid deposits and other toxins from the tissues. Unlike the circulatory system that flows due to the beating of your heart, your lymphatic system’s series of valves requires stimulation like muscle relaxation and contraction in order to do the job of “taking out the garbage.”
If you’re not moving much, or don’t use a dry skin brush regularly, your lymphatic system is stagnant and acids build up.
Fat Buffer System: Low-density lipoproteins, commonly referred to as LDLs, bind with acids found in the blood, lymphatic system, and tissues of the body which are then removed via the urine.
If the body becomes overloaded with acids and the buffering systems are unable to keep up with the load, the body will protect the vital organs by storing these fat-acid combos in areas such as the hips, thighs, and stomach—eventually creating obesity.
If under constant threat of acidosis–a condition in which the body tissues become increasingly acidic–the ability of the body’s buffer systems to maintain an alkaline environment diminishes, and the chances of developing chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome increases.
This syndrome is linked to acidosis. Symptoms associated with this disease include not only clinical obesity, but also high blood cholesterol, low amounts of HDL (the “good guy” in cholesterol circles), high blood pressure, kidney stones, and high blood sugar. It is also a predictor for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

We now understand the importance of an alkaline environment, so what does water have to do with it?
Water, as you know, is life sustaining. Without it, we will die in about four days.
Our brain is comprised of more water than any other substance. In fact, almost 75 to 85 percent of it is water and it uses this liquid to create hormones and neurotransmitters.
What else does water do for us? It regulates our temperature, acts as a shock absorber for the brain and spinal cord, lubricates joints, removes waste, helps deliver oxygen to every part of our body, and allows the cells to grow, reproduce and survive.6 Pretty important stuff.
When we don’t drink enough, we suffer from fatigue, dizziness, brain fog, muscle cramps, mood swings, constipation, dry skin, and insomnia.
And yet, it is estimated that 75 percent of Americans suffer from dehydration.7

So, now we are back to our original equation: Alkaline + Water = Health.
We now know the benefits of alkaline foods and water. Put them both together and we have alkaline water—a drink containing both vital elements. Alkaline water typically has a pH level of about 8 or 9. It also contains several key minerals such as calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium.
How Do You Get Alkaline Water?
Drinking this type of water is one of the best things you can do for your health. In fact, you can increase your pH by drinking alkaline water more than any other habit—even adopting a raw vegan diet!
Water sold as “alkaline water” is available at most grocery stores. Increases your metabolism. When you are dehydrated, your body slows down your metabolism in order to conserve water.
Resets leptin levels. Leptin is your “stop eating” hormone. It sends a “full” signal to the brain that keeps you from that second helping of your favorite pasta carbonara. Eliminating toxins, creating an alkaline environment, and lowering inflammation all help to reset your leptin levels, allowing for effortless weight loss.
Helps kidneys function. Kidneys can discharge more toxins when your pH is higher. For example, if your urine pH is at 5.5, your kidneys are only able to filter out about 5 percent of the fluoride in your bloodstream. At 7.6 pH, the kidneys can filter out 65 percent of this fluoride.11
Examples of Weight Loss and Longevity
A study conducted on obese people found that those who drank two liters of alkaline water on a daily basis averaged a loss of 12 pounds in two months with no other change in their diet. In addition, they also observed reduced cholesterol and blood pressure levels.9
Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center had subjects with potential metabolic syndrome drink alkaline water for 8 weeks. All participants demonstrated improvement in the levels of oxidative stress markers including a decrease in “bad” cholesterol and an increase in antioxidant activity.5
Their conclusion? Hydrogen-rich water represents a potentially therapeutic and preventive strategy for metabolic syndrome.
The Okinawa Centenarian Project was a study conducted to determine why Okinawa—a Japanese Island—had more people living to the age of 100 or older than anywhere else on earth. They found that their diet is rich in vegetables and fruits, they exercise daily, practiced mindfulness, and drink an alkaline water rich in healthy minerals.
Conclusions on Alkaline Water for Weight Loss
While you may think alkaline water is out of your financial reach, keep in mind, it is pennies on the dollar compared to buying bottled alkaline water, which, as we’ve explained, usually doesn’t stay alkaline after it’s bottled and until you drink it anyway..
Another remarkable difference is that reverse osmosis and distilled water units remove all the minerals and create a very acidic water–usually somewhere between 4.5 and 5.7.
The bottom line is that adding alkaline water to your diet and daily lifestyle is an excellent and easy way to increase your health and provide your body with the hydration and minerals it requires to help you maintain your ideal body weight.
