Okay so I'm probably going to regret writing this, but fuck it I guess. I'm tagging both "anti-reylo" and "Reylos" because this post is for both sides of this weird war that generated a rise in hate in the SW fandoms days after raising money for charities was the main focus.
I have been a Star Wars fan all my life. I know just how diverse, extreme and passionate all sectors of Star Wars fans can be.
I lived through the era when people did nothing but hate Hayden Christensen for his portrayal as Anakin. (I admit, the older I got, the more I began to understand why some people found his performance a jarring contrast to Vader's image in the OT) & George Lucas as well just because the prequels never surplanted the OT
I lived through Finn being attacked for being a primary protagonist for his skin colour alone. This only got pushed to the background when people found a new punching back in Rose in TLJ. I still know people who hate Rey/Rose as a character.
Star Wars has always been about hope and overcoming great evil, BUT the fandom has never not been free of racism, hate or toxic online behaviour, social media has only blown it out of proportion. Make no mistake, if the prequels were released now, in a technological age where hate is click able post away, the results would be identical.
What I don't condone is everyone suddenly blanketing years worth of hate under one fandom name: Reylo.
I am not an inherent Reylo in that I'm not as much invested in their romance as I am invested in both Ben and Rey and the complex relationship they share bridged by the force. I understand why people love the ship and I've interacted with the fandom and seen nothing but support, appreciation and creativity. Granted there was anger to the end of TRoS - which I am guilt of feeling too because of the message TRoS highlighted about Ben's arc and character by killing him off and denying him the Skywalker legacy.
What I am not happy with is that everyone just assumes that if you're a Reylo, then by effect you aren't a fan of Finn or John and are a racist for some reason because being a Reylo means that by default you are one of the fans that threw backlash and hate at John for being a black male lead in a global franchise.
This isn't true.
I am mixed race and I haven't read any racist comments from Reylo's in the time I've circulated around the fandom.
I have adored John's career since Attack the Block. I enjoyed his chemistry with Kelly and Oscar. I love the fact Finn and Rey are bff's of the opposite sex. But i feel like John's video isn't fair because it perpetuates this idea that ALL members of a fandom share the same views, are interchangeable and have been the ones to bully/harass him online since TFA which isn't true. I'm not saying a Reylo has never said anything bad or hurtful to John, all I'm saying is that this video turns the narrative to say "it's always been and only has ever been they Reylo fandom".
A lot of Reylo's I know are also part of the Stormpilot fandom or the RosexFinn fandom. They've made fan art. Written fan fiction and bought tickets to support the franchise. But because a few fans took offence in a joke he made about "laying pipe" suddenly the entire fandom is reduced to being "white, female, racist and entitled."
Please, if you're anti Reylo just know that's fine. Like what you like. But please, don't blanket all the social issues star wars as a fandom has suffered from for 40 years under the flag of ONE branch in that vast, complex fandom.
Similarly, if you're a Reylo don't let other people make you feel ashamed for liking something just because they don't see things from your point of view.
Perception is everything but the truth can easily be molded to suit one view point.
The Internet suffers from an abundance of diatribes and hate speech and derogatory terms and belittling of others simply because they are from a certain demographic.
Just please don't normalise hating someone or being apathetic to a diverse group of fans who appear to be predominantly women based. I've been a part of many fandoms. This hate isn't strictly directed to Star Wars fans either. I'm just tired of never seeing anyone comment: "I'm an anti but I don't think blaming them for all bullying and harrasment is fair." or "there are Reylo's of other races and skin colour and it doesn't make sense to band them as one race and thereby band that race as racist by default"
Instead what I do see is: "that entire group is white women who were racist and have been the sole reason the SW fandom is toxic."
And I'm tired of it. Please. Just... adding flame to fire (especially if you've got a large following willing to pick up a torch) never helps either side.
Please be empathetic.
Please reblog to open up a communication barrier and have civil discussions where no hate is perpetuated. This is a safe space for both sides to acknowledge each side, comment and try to show that we are capable of acknowledging each other without hate.
