I worked my way through Rictor’s reading list in Spring 2018 and wished for more content and then the finger on the monkey’s paw curled inwards

#Kelsey liveblogs comics #he then showed up in nm:da (acceptable characterization but underused and whitewashed) #then in shatterstar (juicy characterization but his relationship with shatterstar was unfairly and homophobically nuked) #and then he was promoted to regular with excalibur (genuinely just. no character. not a single ounce of what makes him great) #honestly shatterstar (2018) was quite racist w/r/t depictions of asian culture and also misogynistic and also just a shit series #that showed no respect towards shatterstar’s history and character #but it did have a Rictor take that I liked. running an Underground Railroad for mutant kids shows off his leadership and independence from #the greater X-teams. it also ties into his Mexican identity as a metaphor for protecting undocumented people across the border #my 3 key tenets of Rictor’s character are a) good leadership b) critical thought abt the world he’s in and c) helping those in need #mental illness has also been a major part of his story but you could def do a post-recovery narrative with him and still have it be good #so it’s not 100% necessary to have him struggling with that. just necessary to respect that it’s part of his past
