HIJAB BUTCH BLUES by LAMYA H.
Alright, changing it up a bit with my book stuff but this one hit home with me. The author draws very interesting parallels between stories in the Quran and her experiences as a gay muslim woman that are very interesting. And if you think you can’t be muslim and gay, or wear a hijab and be gay, or even tackle muslim culture and queerness in one, then you’re bound to be pleasantly proved wrong with this one.

lesbian and queer fashion includes hijabs, niqabs, burqas, and other religious and cultural clothing. queer muslims, queer jewish people, queer people of color, should not have to choose between their faith and their presentation. they do not need to sacrifice their cultural clothing in order to satisfy western standards of queer gender presentation. butch and femme muslims, jewish people, and poc who wear niqabs, burqas, niqabs, yarmulkes, etc- are not “straying” from lesbian fashion or culture, they are adding to it and making it more rich and beautiful. all sapphics deserve to feel safe in their head coverings. if you’re a sapphic who wears head coverings/body coverings or cultural clothing of some sort, you are valuable and beautiful just as you are.

there's always a lot of talk about how being gay or trans is a "sin." and a lot of people have reclaimed this, have joked about their "sin," have held it up yourself so it can't be held against you.
but to all of the religious queers, the ones trying to find or create a home in themselves where their identity and their religion don't contradict... i see you. i've been you, i am you, i love you.
your orientation is not a sin.
your gender is not a sin.
you are not sinful or wrong or bad just for being who you are.
your identity does not contradict your religion.
you are beautifully and wonderfully made, just as you are.
you are loved by your creator, just as you are.
nobody can take any of that away from you.
[ please do not tag or censor my use of the word queer. do not derail this post by talking about how much religion sucks. ]

ahem, taps mic....
lesbianism is not a quota to fill. lesbianism is not what you do. it is innate; it is who you are.
a lesbian is a woman or lesbian aligned nonbinary person who is exclusively attracted to women and non-man aligned nonbinary people.
you fit that? you're a lesbian!
lesbian sexuality is so profoundly beautiful and diverse and powerful. it is boundless, limitless and abundant. it is joyous and overflowing with glory and strength.
take pride, lesbians. we are the best.

I am a muslim girl who loves Allah (SWT). Who wants to be better at praying. Who wants to wear khimars and abayas and jilbabs. Who wants to go to the masjid every day. Who wants to read the entire Quran. Who wants to get married to a good muslim man.
I am a muslim girl who loves girls. Who tears up and the sight of a pride parade. Who cant decide between purple or pink. Who knows she's not straight. Who knows God made her this way.
I am a muslim girl who watches BLs and listens to kpop. Who finds beauty in fictional relationships and pretty dances. Who gains comfort through music.
I am a muslim girl who is autistic. Who can't always wear hijab. Who can't enjoy new foods with unfamiliar flavors. Who gets lost and anxious in new places and situations. Who has to stim after a while of sitting still.
I am a muslim girl with trauma. Who fears people in authority and is scared of her nightmares. Who wants to reconcile with her parents but is afraid of losing herself along the way. Who wants to learn about her new faith but can't bring herself to trust scholars.
I am a muslim girl. I am not a picture pefect muslim and I will never be. And that's okay, because that's what makes me ... Me.
