Interview with Isaiah Clelland
This past week, I got the opportunity to sit down with Isaiah Clelland as he discussed the release of his 2nd EP The Palace. Coming in at six songs, he is bringing everything he’s got with a new flavour on each track never seen before in previous releases. “This time had to be different. I couldn’t keep making the same songs and because of that, this process took a lot longer to reach a satisfied state.” Usually finding himself in the process of writing another song, Isaiah is constantly working through ideas both musically and thematically that hit him the hardest. He said the first 7 songs he wrote were the first seven songs that were released on M in 2021. “In the beginning, it felt like whatever idea I had was something completely new to me and had to go through the recording process.” When discussing what changed, Isaiah mentioned how there was more practice involved with the writing process. Songs were sometimes written to never be released but rather work through challenges to improve the quality overall. But what really made this EP different for Isaiah is that his production level had finally started to meet what he calls satisfactory for his ear. “I wouldn’t feel disappointed by trying to create something and not being able to translate my idea into a recording— never happy with what I was creating.” A changing of tides has helped him with being happy with his music and truly enjoy all aspects of making art.
This can instantly be heard on the title track The Palace. Isaiah’s first song ever collaborating to make a song, he co-wrote the lyrics with his partner Megan Dicker. “It was different but it has also always been a dream of mine to work with Megan in this capacity to create something beautiful.” The Palace is an acoustic-pop ballad describing that feeling of being stuck at a party you don’t want to be at because it’s way too draining to be a part of. Airy vocals surround you as you’re brought to a different world where no one’s around and nothing to be worried about. It sounds simple enough and Isaiah’s lyrics are begging to get back.
On the next track, Isaiah finds an interesting way to change up the flow of the music. Starting off almost familiar, Let You Downdescribes the person Isaiah has to show up for… then everything speeds up. “I wanted to capture my heart racing, thoughts going a zillion miles an hour trying to figure out how to navigate embarrassment in front of someone I really wanted to impress.” The ups and downs of the 2nd track are crashed into a 2-and-a-half minute outro solo with a fantastic build and stellar guitar tones. A guitar part Isaiah says he’s been sitting on the right song for, waiting for the perfect moment to work it in.
Carefully crafted in its order, Isaiah places his third track Stronger For Me in a slot that really catches the low that the previous two ideas have brought forward. The anxiety, social drain, and embarrassment have caught up and all that is left is 2 a.m. thoughts that should really go to sleep. Inspired by a Cobain sound, the duet-style commentary that Isaiah creates in this quiet acoustic song plays into sitting and wondering what’s going wrong. The thoughts at some times seem irrational and are immediately followed by harsh comments back— the interplay going on in his head after a hard night. By the end, Isaiah begs himself and the listener to “be a little bit stronger for me.”
Following the theme, Isaiah says that the simple song Reset comes from a call with a close friend. Unloading on what’s been going on recently in his life, Isaiah was told to just take it slow and give himself time. Describing this innate rush to succeed and continue improving in any way possible, Isaiah said this is a difficult thing to do. He always wants to know what’s next and by working on Reset, he really focused on giving himself a break. Matching this style, the song is backed by a single acoustic guitar and a vocal in a voicenote-esk tone. A beautiful guitar part plays an interlude between lyrical passages and Isaiah remains straight to the point by asking himself “Why don’t you give yourself a day/Take it slow for once.”
Constantly berated by social media messaging, marketing, influencers, education, and relationships, one can only wonder for so long if they are worth enough. Tell Me I’m Enough, the fifth track off The Palace represents an outcry for more. “It feels at some point that no matter what people say it doesn’t feel like enough”. Isaiah wonders throughout the song whether this is an internal issue of learning to appreciate when people say good things to him or that he really isn’t receiving any help from others. With a funk guitar thrown into the bridge, Isaiah makes the realization that maybe he should listen a bit better when people say that he is enough for them. Not lasting too long, however, the song ends still asking if he will ever be enough.
As a response to his single Start a Life, Isaiah asks and wonders how will I ever be what I am supposed to be. Figuring out what the real world meant was a struggle to determine, only to realize that everything is the real world. “It feels like when you are in school that there is the thought that one day you will be in the real world with an adult job but the current life that I’m living doesn’t actually count.” Overcoming these thoughts put life into a greater perspective. He described how the various trajectories that his friends and Isaiah have fallen placed them in different phases in their lives while they all remain the same age. Taking on various roles in jobs, relationships, and families has created an unease for Isaiah that is brought together with chorus guitars, layered vocals, and fantastic melodic composition on I’ll Never Be My Age.” The last song on the EP draws on the emotion of never being settled with where he is, I’ll Never Be My Age is uncomfortable, hurts, is joyous, and challenges what age really means when growing up.
The Palace isn’t easy for Isaiah. He articulates those feelings well and captures the sound terrifically but you have to wonder what the toll the style of music takes on him is. At the end of our conversation, I posed this thought forward and he said that his brain deconstructs concepts deeply and it often leaves a foul taste. “It isn’t always the best but working through those feeling are important and need to be shared with others.” Making connections with others with his music helps Isaiah know that he’s not alone in these feelings.
You can get back to The Palace on September 21 streaming everywhere you listen.

Daniel Teruggi - Sphæra (Recollections GRM) "Picture the air, rare and clear, at the Kármán Line, beginning to tremble, shiver and shake. Lightning crashes, thunder sounds, rain begins to fall on bare earth, creating a river of mud, cascading into the sea. Or, perhaps, a radiant crystal, crafted from passing an electrical spark through a noble gas." My review of this wonderful electroacoustic/early electronic album from Daniel Teruggi, who would go on to become director of the GRM from 1997 to 2017 and director for research and experimentation at Ina from 2001 -2016. Brilliant philosophical early electronic compositions - it's not every day i get to mention Plato in an album review! Lovely mastering job by @senufoeditions and incredible design/layout, as always, from @stephenomalley74 Click the link in bio to read the full review at Spectrum Culture. . . . . . #DanielTeruggi #Sphæra #Spheres #GRM #Plato #neoplatonism #musiqueconcrete #electronicmusic #earlyelectronicmusic #archaicelectronics #electronicmusichistory #electroacoustic #electroacousticmusic #philosophicalmusic #thephilosophyofmusic #experimentalmusic #acousmatic #acousmaticmusic #recollectionsgrm #musicjournalism #albumreview #albumcover #musicdesign #graphicdesign #StephenOMalley #JSimpson #albumreviewer #musicjournalist #SpectrumCulture #forestpunkrecommends  https://www.instagram.com/p/CnVNc_dPoSq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
