music student tips
when you get a new piece, always listen to recordings of it. find your favourites. make a playlist. it will inspire you, and prevent you from accidentally misreading your sheet music.
if your instrument is not in good shape, your music will not be in good shape (hey, fellow strings players, when did you last change the strings?).
always have a pencil. always. have lots of them and people will love you.
annonate and highlight your sheet music. these things are not reserved for notes and textbooks, you know? mark down sections, highlight the key change you keep forgetting about. hell, you can even colour-code it! mark down everything you can.
the back of your sheet music is a good place to write miscellaneous instructions such as "memorise by monday".
keep a semblance of order in your sheet music.
think while you're practicing. music practice is an endless cycle of problem solving, and while mechanical repetition is an integral part of it, you need to re-evaluate constantly if you're repeating the right thing.
metronome! enough said.
if you keep on attacking the problem, it will eventually give. or, at least, significantly improve. there is no improvement in giving up on something because it was too difficult.
it will never be perfect, and that's okay.
no decently challenging piece can be learned in a day, no matter how long you spend on it that day—if it can, it's too easy for you, or you're on a professional level. you have to whittle it down day by day, little by little. when it comes to music practice, consistency beats intensity.
track you practice time. i use the forest app for it, and it has worked marvelously so far. if you can, keep a practice journal as well (i'm awfully inconsistent with that).
you are still allowed to have fun and play silly stuff, even if you're a "serious" musician. you can play both a wienavski concerto and the good omens theme, you know?
even if you are less than stellar at your instrument, just put in decent effort, show up to rehearsals, and be polite and honest with your co-musicians (that way, you are much more likely to be liked—and invited to a post-concert bar crawl). you're still learning. most classmates are fine with bit of incompetence, but nobody likes a person who's full of shit.
being a music student is hard. take care of yourself, physically and mentally, and do not listen to assholes who do not understand how difficult your workload is.

What are your top study strategies with piano? I'm a self-taught pianist that most started because of my love for your lie in April and how music moved people so I am always trying to improve!!!
hi! first of all, i'm sorry this took a while, i wanted to make sure i had as complete a list as possible without being too overwhelming! also not sure what level you're at, so i'm going to assume you're just starting out and you're looking to play classical music. 🙂 also this is more of a "do as i say, not as i do" bc i really struggle to do some of these consistently 🙈
try to learn some basic music theory as soon as you can. just enough to be able to read sheet music (how to read treble and bass clefs, accidentals, time signatures, basic rhythm, and key signatures) if you haven't already. that's something i regret not doing at the beginning bc the vast majority of music and all of classical music are written in sheet music and you get so much more info from it than you can from the best of synthesia videos. beyond that, knowing music theory -> pattern recognition, so it can help with sight reading and memorization. this is the youtube series i learned the basics from. it's pretty comprehensive although i find he's sometimes hard to hear and goes off on a tangent. at the very least, you can use it as a guide for what to type into the search box to get a more concise explanation as there are lots online!
familiarize yourself with the basic technical exercises (scales, arpeggios, triads, etc.) in every key bc those patterns and fingerings appear all the time in classical music.
practice sight reading. (yes, i know it hurts the brain, it hurts mine too, but it will really really speed up the learning process when learning new repertoire so we can focus on the more fun aspects of music! 😆😅)
practice every day! and not just moving your fingers, your mind needs to be present and your ears need to be listening (e.g. are you playing with the right dynamics? are you moving in a way that will get the right tone? how is your posture?). sometimes it's a lot to be thinking about as you're playing, so it helps to record yourself and listen back. once you feel yourself losing focus or making the same mistakes over and over again, maybe it's time to take a little break bc practice makes permanent and you don't wanna injure yourself 🙂
on that note, playing an instrument is kind of like playing a sport in that you need to make sure you use proper form so you don't injure yourself (using bigger muscle groups like your arm and gravity rather than forcing the sound through blocky fingers)! if you play on a digital, the keys will generally be lighter than on an acoustic (highly recommend trying to play on both to compare!), so making a conscious effort to play the way you would be forced to on an acoustic is all the more important.
i hope this helps! my ask box is always open if you have any more questions or just wanna talk music 🎶💗 i'm really excited for you! expressing yourself through music and sharing it with others is so fulfilling 😊

I reorganized my room and there are finally some corners that give some aesthetic vibes. My goal for the rest of the summer is to be well prepared for the next school year in terms of time management and academically (or rather, musically). Today I successfully got up early and had a good practice session, but I could have practiced more had I prepared food in advance.

Hi little friends in my phone!! <3
I've got some ✨updates✨:
As some of you may have noticed (or not lol) I've changed my course of study. I'll be studying Literature and Performing Arts and I'm so excited!! I just realised graphic design wasn't what I wanted to do, speaking long-term.
I'm so happy about my decision and I can't wait to start, which leads us to the next update: I'm starting my lessons tomorrow!!
Looking forward to sharing my journey with you all and with whoever will join me in this new and exciting academic adventure!
Love, Asia 💌

Video
These are from yesterday. I went to one of the practice rooms on campus yesterday and was in there for a few hours learning the final page of the song Heather by Dennis Alexander. The video is me playing the song all the way through with lots of mistakes, but I at least have the song learnt and can begin working on making it perfect! I also worked on some breathing yesterday. I had classes most of the day so I wasn’t home to practice during the day. I practiced when I got home and I worked for about 15 mins. I was really tired and went to bed super early, but I wanted to at least get a bit of practice in.

I haven’t worked on vocals at all this semester, but piano I have because I have a piano class, hence the difference in levels.

practicing classical violin brings some so much misery. it’s so demanding and i can’t keep up because i didn’t start early enough. even finding a piece i enjoy brings me pain to play because of how much love i’ve ended up losing. i practice and practice and i’m trying to record more of my practicing sessions but it still feels like it isn’t enough. what more does it want from me?

Hi, musicians of Tumblr. There's an awesome app called Tonic that kind of combines music practice with gamification (xp, unlockable items for your avatar, leaderboards, practice streaks etc). The principle is: when you practice, you turn on an audio-only stream which other people can tune into (it sounds stressful, but in reality someone will pop up for 30 seconds, send you a heart, and leave). You get xp depending on how long you've practiced.
If it sounds like something you'd like, I highly recommend it and encourage you to try it.

hi! ~a belated studyblr intro~
Tumblr media
just realized i never did a proper intro for this blog!
so, hello, i've been flip flopping between taking lessons and self-studying piano for several years and this blog was (and still is) intended to be a studyblr to track my progress.
i'm currently self-studying as my time is split between this and STEM studies (more on that on my side blog @studentbyday) but i really really hope to finally establish a consistent practice (after struggling to do so for many years 😅) so i know i will be able to handle weekly lessons again 😤
🎓 goals for piano/music studies:
enjoy playing music (including without headphones)
establish sustainable routines so i can practice piano every day or at least every week
get over stage fright and paralyzing perfectionism
improve my sight reading
motivate myself to learn more music theory and use it to analyze my favorite songs
find fellow music enthusiasts on tumblr!
💗 interests/inspirations:
classical music (my favorite composer is chopin but beethoven is a close second)
jazz
your lie in april (i read the manga online and really really wanna see the anime!)
Tiffany Poon and Animenz's playing

The third year of my lessons starts next week! I'm so excited, I've had a stressful summer and have really been slacking with my singing practice, but it's so therapeutic that I'm delighted to have a singing routine again. I started my vocal study notebook last night! I just decided to set some goals for the year to start.
I am also starting some music theory and literature courses soon and of course have to continue with my canine behaviour CPDs, so I'll keep you posted :)
And I'll post the song I listened to with each study/note taking session!
Today's song: Just Like Paradise - David Lee Roth

good morning everyone!!
i have been terribly inactive mostly because life, work and study have been hectic and i wasn’t finding the studyblr community as motivating as previously, instead using it as a distraction.
i’ve just started my honours year though and have a thesis and portfolio on the horizon so i believe i will be more active and document my progress to stay accountable!
as a music and english student and professional, i’m also interested in documenting my progress in study and career as i think there isn’t much arts content. i’d like to show what it’s like as an academic and creative discipline! 🌱🖌🎶
