So what was the process of creating Timeline Canon like? Was it entirely generated by asks and threads and random ideas and totally made up as you went along, or were there parts that were planned well in advance? Did you always know where the story would end up, or was it a process of discovery?

So - answering these together because they kind of play with each other - and I! have time right now!

Timeline Canon was more built on my having threads with a lot of different partners and my brain just lumping them together into oh, this plays into this, these go together - which is something I did with other RP characters, too, not just with Jess, just...I didn't try to show them in an overarching story like this. Most of the later verses and threads were made up as I went along sort of - with the exception of knowing that Jess and Scully could not end well because. Jess ended up with Regina after her period of Default (I don't remember when I added that year of Default in - it might not have been pre-writing with River, but like. Once started story-ing things out, knew that was going to end. tragically).

There WERE parts planned in advance with the earlier stuff, though! Willow and I did a lot of plotting of how Jess and Roger's relationship looked like prior to the movie and talked a lot about it, so stuff like their letters and the events they referenced, we knew the major stuff in advance, but smaller stuff not so much! (And sometimes we did the other threads surrounding those and then they got to comment on them in letters later! Which was fun.)

...and then Haruko and Eleanor - I wrote both of those, two, so that was me wanting to play around with things just for the fun of it. I brought them in because I wanted them, etc.

But I think - and I touched on this a bit with the last ask of yours I answered - these being rp threads is the important thing. Who I wrote with heavily relied on who I met and wanted to write with (and whether or not they wanted to write with me) - so I didn't really actively look for characters or sought them out for parts in a story - I wrote with them because I liked their character, I liked the way they interpreted the character, and I could see ways for Jess to interact with them (or vice-versa - Alana is a case for this, I think, because I had no idea who she was prior to meeting Kat and was not at all interested in seeing Hannibal (this changed later), but she was a good writer and I'd seen her writing with Ducky - who wrote Andromeda - and then she wanted to write with Jess and we figured stuff out from there).

But, like, when I started writing Jess, I aggressively did not want to write ships. Romantic etc. At all. I was glad she had a canon husband because then I did not have to deal with that, because it wasn't something I was interested in writing. (And also a lot - a LOT - of the sphere I ended up in with Jess wrote smut, which I aggressively did not want to write.) Jae's Regina I think was the first ship not-Roger I started writing, and that had more to do with seeing how the characters interacted with each other than my wanting to ship with her? They just. played well together. (But also Jae and I had good writing chemistry that way. I think almost every character we have written against each other has ended up in a ship with at least one of our other characters (with two exceptions that I can think of). But that's the thing about writing with people in RP - whether characters get shipped or not really relies on your writing chemistry with the other writer and what your character says about their character; River and I for MONTHS wrote Jess and Scully just like I am intrigued but also I have no idea what my character feels about yours I don't even know if they like each other but they don't hate each other what even is this.

But also. The part of the RP sphere I was in were mostly female characters? There were other male characters - like @neko-shadow! whose interactions with Jess I love! - but Jess? wasn't interested? in Shadow? that way? But they flirted? All the time?

And also. A lot of people in the RP sphere who were into shipping and writing a bunch of smut also cycled porn gifs? Because this was before the ban? And I? was not at all interested in seeing a bunch of dicks on my dash?

...and also personal preference may have fallen into this because I, personally, am not as interested in guys romantically as I am in girls (I'm super super ace. SO ACE), and that may have fed into what happened with Jess? (Most of my RP characters have had more female ships - most of them haven't had male ships at all - but like. The part of the RP sphere I was in was also. mostly female characters who were interested in other female characters. That was just. How it happened.)

Something else of note in the FLCL Initial Proposals & Outlines is that Tsurumaki, in interviews such as those in FLCLick Noise, talks at length about the influence of darker teen seinen & josei manga on FLCL. Mamimi most embodies this element, with a design sensibility borrowed right from josei queen Moyocco Anno herself, and author Kyoko Okazaki also comes up as a big influence - in particular River's Edge, which I wrote about a long time ago as a source for FLCL iconography such as the bridge. Tsurumaki has sort of a mission with FLCL to try to bring into anime ideas from genres it was currently neglecting, these styles of manga chief amoung them.

I think though that is notable that Mamimi is not the primary character of FLCL; Naota and especially Haruko are not standard bearers for the style of Kyoko Okazaki, and overall FLCL has way more elements that just this one going on. This concern did not turn out to be FLCL's dominant concern.

Something these early production documents have is a sheet of 'ideas' that predates even the Initial Project Proposal; really just Tsurumaki's musings on show ideas. And while a lot of the ideas of final-FLCL are in there, a lot of them are missing; meanwhile the seinen stuff actually looms a bit larger. There are notes about dramatic interpersonal fights between Mamimi and a friend, more trouble with the law, and most notably - and this is *extremely* edgecore - the idea that a female teacher of Naota's had hidden an aborted fetus in a jar in the woods that was causing mystical mischief. This last one jumps out to me the most because River's Edge *also* has an abortion plotline in it, less extreme but equally dramatic, and it seems like a possible source for this idea.

Once you get to the initial proposal a lot of these elements have been pared back, Haruko is more zany, mecha fights more prominent, etc. It does seem like there was a moment where Tsurumaki was toying with the idea of a show with quite a different focus, even it was always going to be a mix of elements; but this idea fell away as the concept was worked out. I would love to see an interview where this is discussed directly; I alas never have, and am not sure that I will, but reading the tea leaves of the production documents is still revealing.

As a mun, what inspires you about Tarhos and Haru? What are some of their dynamics that you love?

I know I've briefly touched on this, but it's because they're just people. One of the main things that I really liked learning about from my research into the time period Tarhos is from (and while yes I'm not historically accurate or so adjacent with him) is that people were always just... people. From British propaganda during the industrial revolution you'd think the medieval period aka the "dark ages" were bleak, depressing, if you weren't rich you were hating yourself and hating life which like today yes it is true some people were depressed back then.

But... people will make their own happiness and judging how people lived back then from modern standards will always make things bleak. And that's pretty beautiful right? I like that the most about them two in his main verse and Haru's medieval/d.bd- Both of their circumstances are utter shit, you have Tarhos who was enslaved as a child and barely earned his freedom before he got corrupted by a weird spider god and Haruko who was taken from his home across the sea and enslaved as a concubine who meets him by chance and finds a way out there only to be pulled into the fog when his husband is. But they're still finding their own happiness.

They'll joke about their situation, refer to themselves as animals in a pet-name way (dove, old dog, etc.) and just try to keep as much domestic life as they're allowed. Haru spins and does the more "womanly" chores around the camp like the other knights wives and pulls Tarhos and his friends aside at night to be human together. They're always finding their own happiness even in the bleakest of situations and it's really fun to write. And of course in their other aus there's things that I love too like darkin Tarhos's and his dynamic is really interesting.

Haru in that au is a lot more violent that Tarhos is at times and he's a literal being that feeds off of blood and has an eternal hunger for it due to being a God made by a forgotten empire and thus lost his meaning so even if he wanted to die he couldn't. Haru has no idea what the darkin are beyond what Tarhos has told him, but he is still the only god that answered his prayers and he'll worship him like the divine being he once was. Then modern is just really sweet and domestic, they're having their issues right now, but honestly modern Tarhos is just really shit at communicating and they both need therapy real bad. The joust au Egg's been implanting brain worms in my head for turning into something really sweet as well, their one good ending in a medieval setting-

I don't know, there's just so much to enjoy about people being people. But- if anyone who follows me doesn't already know who Haru or Egg are, they're over at @witchcraftandburialdirt. They are genuinely one of the sweetest people I have ever met and I know I'm biased because they are my themfriend™/romantic partner/t4t alliance/whatever, but their writing is incredible and they have d.bd aus for both their muses as well. And I will never not sing their praises, because they are such an inspiration for me art wise in every sense of the word.

One thing about your blog - Very simple and basic. Ship Bias for Midorima

Midotaka (I have a bias for the master-servant dynamic. Kazunari is willing to cater to Shintarō's whims and has worked so hard to get him to acknowledge him! Clearly, I'm a big fan of the ships where we get to see growth and Shintarō in his way managed to open up thanks to Kazunari's presence and he understands him like no other human being will ever even if the green-haired guy is still a puzzle to him. I thought I wouldn’t  get a chance to write Midotaka but @ervaurem came to my rescue and excited to develop them more with her! )

Natsuki Adachi ( @sportbaes 's oc was the primary reason I added Shintarō lol. I already conveniently downloaded his icons because of my oc Masaru who I planned a reincarnation verse where he resembles Shintarō and I wanted to see their romance play out since they were both unlucky people... She's his type since she's an older woman. She's so sweet to him regardless of what happens, and I hope to do more things for them eventually!)

Kimi Kaiou ( My crossover oc for Sailor Moon and Kuroko no Basuke - Senshi no Basuke ! She's also his type as a fellow water sign, an older woman, and they even had a past life romance which causes them to develop feelings again in the present day. They won't work out in my story for the sake of Midotaka being endgame and she's a Sailor Guardian but I hope to do ship art of them at least... At the very least, they still remain friends. )

Chantelle Aomi She's my muse ( Chantelle is also part of Senshi no Basuke and was made to be the female counterpart of  Shintarō  as a long-range shooting guard. She's his friend in her canon but in my brain, I enjoy shipping the Generation of Miracles with the Princesses of Basketball.  It would make for such power couples... They're fellow water signs and while he is selfish, she’s very giving so it definitely makes for an interesting dynamic. )

5. Haruko Tsukishima ( While we have yet to get them to actually fall in love, all the plotting @tsukuharuko and I did makes me enjoy them a lot! I just pushed him to be a kiss victim for International Kissing Day then it spiraled into an amazing love story. They're enemies to lovers and will have a slow burn since both of them are demi. The fact that Oho Asa said her sign will give him a good luck kiss, they encountered each other on his birthday, and the fact they shared an umbrella is good foreshadowing... >:3c )
