Suspect no. 14: Lord Blue Roan 🏇 The final murder suspect is back to my original guy, Mr 💙 I quite like the way he turned out, although it’s hard to make someone look old in this style without adding a moustache or beard... (Me a bunch of friends of mine have all inexplicably decided to make Clue (the board game❓) themed characters, and I’ve taken to drawing them all in the very fitting, suspicious style of Edward Gorey)

Well, that was fun.

I was in the grocery store and my phone -- it’s a cheap-ass flip phone, not a smart phone -- suddenly made a weird ringing sound that wasn’t my ringtone.
A ton of customers’ phones throughout the store went off.  Followed by an alarm in the store.
I looked at my phone and saw this:
EXTREME ALERT!
SHELTER IN PLACE! MURDER SUSPECT 17 YEAR OLD WHITE MALE
“Okaaay,” I said to myself, “could I have some more info, please?  Is he here in the store?  Is he outside trying to get in?  Are they going to lock the doors?  Are the police coming?  Should I go to the bathroom while I have a chance?”
One of the store managers went from customer to customer, saying, quite calmly, “We need to shelter in place.”
She didn’t talk to me, just walked on by.  I’m like, “Do I not look like someone who should be warned?  Or do I look like someone who could kick a murderous teenage white boy’s ass?”
Probably the latter.
I stood there and muttered to myself, “So there’s a murderer running loose.  Fine.  Where do I find the diced tomatoes?”
This is not something I ever have thought I’d say at any time in my life.
Plus, the store is in a slightly upscale, predominantly white neighborhood.  There are a lot of white boy teenagers around, mostly college students.  I saw two in the store.  Neither of them looked like they were worried about the police.  One was carrying a bag of chips.  Maybe the murder suspect got the munchies and decided to buy some Cheddar & Sour Cream Ruffles before he raced down the highway at 100 MPH, blasting at the cops with his AR-15.
About 15 minutes later everyone’s phones rang and the store alarm went off again.
EXTREME ALERT!
SUSPECT NOW LOCATED IN [ NAME OF SUBURBAN CITY ]
“That’s miles away,” I said to myself.  “Why are you telling people here?”
Ten minutes later (paraphrasing):
Extreme Alert canceled!
We caught the stupid motherfucker at [ location ].  Return to your every day lives.
You got to understand, this just fries my brain.  When I was a kid shopping with my Mom at the shiny new grocery store in my home town, circa 1968, the most surprising thing we ever experienced were these new things called “automatic doors.”  You stepped on a weird pad and the doors fucking opened for you (I kid you not, I remember when these were a new thing.  We kids would jump up and down on the pads, opening and shutting the doors till the managers told us to scram).
Now I get alerts from the phone in my pocket about possibly having to hunker down from a suspected killer while I’m deciding whether to buy Charmin or Angel Soft.
I wish my Mom was still alive so we could look at each other and say, “Damn, how times have changed.”

Had cause, unbelievably, to design a Clue-themed character a while ago so here he is… Lord Blue Roan (My name is already a colour so I figured I’d just use it, haha) This drawing is a little bit “off-model” now, he’s gotten like… elongated since this.
